Evidence points out that most so-called 

“new discoveries” are actually a synthesis of 

what others have already found. We, as a 

species, have benefited from sharing 

information, and have made incredible 

technological progress as a result. At the 

same time, individuals, groups and nations 

maintain their separateness and compete 

with one another for resources. This 

paradox becomes further complicated as 

time and space are brought closer together 

in the media. Boundaries fall away as we 

begin to experience problems, not just as 

individuals, but also collectively. 

The recent magnificent rescue of the 

trapped Chilean mine workers brought the 

world together in prayer and celebration. It 

was a truly international collaboration and a 

living example of how we ARE capable of 

solving problems when we access 

“community.” 

This month, we bring to you several 

examples of community: Michael Bernard 

Beckwith explains his spiritual community 

at Agape, Janice Cook Knight chooses living 

within a “food community,” and 

Josh Tickell shows how, collectively, 

we can change the world by 

changing our fuel.

Michael Bernard Beckwith has just 

returned from West Africa after the 

dedication of a new hospital floor in his 

honor and being “in tooled” as a chief by a 

local tribe. Those honors are indicative of 

his belief in practical accomplishments of 

good works and his foundation of belief in 

all aspects of the Spirit. This article 

includes some of his thoughts about 

coming to see the whole of life as a 

spiritual opportunity, and service to 

community as an integral part of the 

journey. 

As founder of the Agape International 

Spiritual Center, Beckwith rarely, if ever, 

calls it a church. Instead, he describes 

spiritual community and a “soulful 

gathering.” The Center, celebrating its 

24th anniversary, is about affirming the 

divine within all of us, the soul’s evolution 

through a positive life path, and meditation 

in action through compassionate 

service. His teachings are about “birthing 

planetary citizens who are on the edge of 

insight and growth.” 

“We’re really living a song Rickie and I 

co-wrote, ‘The Best of Life,’ said Beckwith, 

referring to his wife of ten years and 

Director of the Agape International Choir, 

Rickie Byars Beckwith. “The song says 

we’re going into new territory in our own 

souls… We’re living on the edge of great 

discovery.” 

Beckwith came from a home of social 

and political activism. He grew up with 

“an activist background, boycotting and 

picketing stores with unfair practices for 

minorities and women.” His parents had 

the books of Martin Luther King and 

Malcolm X in the house, and his family 

was steadfastly against the Vietnam War. 

He came out of high school and went to 

college ready to politically transform the 

country, but one day something shifted. 

He had a new vision for transforming our 

world. 

He heard an inner voice say, “If we got 

control of the world today, would the 

world be any different?” 

“I was sitting in a meeting and looked 

around the room,” said Beckwith. “I saw 

the same ego, the same power struggles,

and the answer rose up within me. No, it 

wouldn’t be any different. It would be the 

same power struggles, just different people 

would be in control. I left that place never 

to go back.” 

Beckwith became disillusioned with 

his old life, and had nothing to take its 

place. So he went back 

to college to study 

psycho-biology. Soon, 

without any preparation, 

he went through what he 

termed “a spiritual 

awakening.” 

Beckwith describes 

this awakening as a death 

of his old persona, 

portrayed in a dream of 

anonymous men chasing 

and attacking him at 

knifepoint. After this 

symbolic death he 

experienced an all-encompassing 

love beyond 

his comprehension. 

(This vision is described 

in his book, Spiritual 

Liberation~Fulfilling 

Your Soul’s Potential.) He 

named this all-encompassing presence 

Love-Beauty, an experience of God as an 

unconditionally loving presence interpenetrating 

all creation, rather than the 

Judeo-Christian concept of a Godhead 

who keeps score and condemns people to 

heaven or hell. 

“When that happened,” said 

Beckwith, “I could see a ‘through line’ of 

my life where this awareness endeavored to 

awaken me to its reality. Up to that point I 

had been successful at keeping it at bay, 

but not this time. I could no longer cling 

to my small point of view.” 

Michael’s inquiry led him to the 

teachings of the East and West including 

indigenous shamans, yogis, mystics, and 

great humanitarians. 

“The intensity of inquiry is my 

constant companion,” said Beckwith. “It 

has ‘out-pictured’ itself as community, my 

writings, and in the ways I’ve been able to 

play on planet to encourage others to agree

to go on their own research project and 

discover new territory.” 

Through Beckwith’s Life Visioning 

Process, he strives to give us tools that make 

us pro-active rather than reactive. This 

process involves asking ourselves the 

important questions and using a productive 

framework to find 

our own answers. It is 

currently being used in 

many disciplines, 

including psychology 

helping individuals avoid 

victimhood, and in 

board rooms tackling 

challenges from a creative 

perspective. 

Beckwith went on to 

talk about his concept of 

gratitude “as a placeholder,” 

meditation, and 

community involvement. 

“It’s a teaching I give 

because people have 

vibrational or motivational 

‘placeholders’ 

based upon their worst 

fears, or things that have 

happened in their life that are negative,” 

said Beckwith. “(It is) a ‘placeholder’ of 

worry, doubt, and fear.” 

Beckwith has found that when 

individuals come into an inspirational 

environment they can temporarily set aside 

those negative feelings or emotions, but 

tend to return to the same point of worry, 

lack, limitation, and fear as soon as they 

leave that environment. 

“They will return to those negative 

feelings as if they had a negative placeholder,” 

said Beckwith. “I tell them to create a 

placeholder in the affirmative, something 

you can be grateful for, a positive 

placeholder.” 

Beckwith practices meditation 

everyday and sees it as a way to maintain a 

positive placeholder. 

“Meditation is key in terms of 

embracing the next stage of our evolution,” 

said Beckwith, “embracing a greater feeling 

of, or a field of peace or well being in your

On Awakening and Creativity- 

“It’s definitely threatening to the ego, 

because the ego’s job is to keep the 

present paradigm and point of view 

safe and keep the body safe. Anything 

that would make us expand our 

awareness, the ego will immediately 

try to thwart it. And the collective ego 

of our society is not about awakening 

but keeping the majority in lockstep... 

Inventors and innovators, artists and 

poets, are often looked upon as weird 

or unusual. And yet, without these 

individuals society would not evolve, 

a Catch-22…Somewhere down the 

line, they are seen as ‘ahead of their 

time.’ I say they weren’t ‘ahead of their 

time,’ just out of time. Insight is 

coming from the eternal realm and it 

can be looked upon as a little bit odd 

until society catches up.” 

On the Media- 

“The media is mainly corporate 

owned and controlled. It’s not really 

news. They are reporting from a dying 

paradigm… basically to sell pharmaceuticals 

and polluting soaps. People 

have to be wary. It’s not news if it’s 

old masquerading as ‘news.’ What’s 

new is not really there in corporate 

media… At the high end technology 

can transform life…Think about it, 

if everyday when you turned on the 

TV you were given the latest news 

about how someone had overcome a 

debilitating disease, how neighbors 

had come together to support someone 

who was down and out and helped 

them rebuild his life, or how some 

innovative aspect of education was 

transforming a community’s youngsters. 

If you watched that every single 

day, then you would grow up 

thinking everything was possible. 

Even though technology is neutral, it 

can hinder or assist our evolving 

consciousness depending on its 

content.”

My Food Village 

We belong to many communities in our lives, social groups that 

influence us, help sustain us, and hopefully, expand our scope and 

our purpose. None have been as important to me as my food 

community. 

I find the subject of food continuously fascinating. From the 

clown cake with the white marshmallow frosting that stuck to 

everything when I was five, to the raw food recipe for crackers 

composed of flax seeds and zucchini and “cooked” in a dehydrator, 

it’s all something that must be tried, explored, and understood. 

Food has always been front and central to my life: cooking it, 

preparing it, growing it, and talking about it. I love to read recipes, 

food memoirs, and food poetry. I even dream about food. I was 

born at the center of some kind of food vortex, savoring food, and 

with extra taste buds to boot (more on that later).

Naturally, all my life I have found food people around me. 

First were my parents and sisters, whose obsessions with healthy 

food would grow to influence my line of work. At sixteen, I got a 

summer job at McDonald’s, a job that illustrated the dark side of 

food, health-wise, but introduced me to the working world and the 

teamwork of a kitchen. At nineteen I began working in a vegetarian 

restaurant. I met many people there who loved to play and 

create in the kitchen. Seven years and one cookbook later, these 

people had become my community and my friends. I even met my 

first husband there. 

Curiously, or perhaps appropriately, every man I’ve ever loved 

has also been a passionate or at least competent cook. Other 

women complain that their men don’t do much of the cooking, but 

this has never been my problem. I didn’t consciously seek out these 

cooking men, or many of my cooking friends, for that matter.

They have always just been there, disguised 

as a high-school boyfriend or a next-doorneighbor. 

Of course, there are people in my life, 

some friends even (though few) who find 

food less fascinating than I do. As a 

cooking teacher, some of these people have 

come to me as clients. They are people 

who would like to learn to cook but for 

whatever reason have not had the time or 

inclination to do so. I try to inspire them. 

I hope to invite them into, not just my 

own food circle, but also the food community 

at large. How does one go about 

doing that? Is food culture innate, or 

learned? 

Several years ago I belonged to a book 

group. We took turns choosing books, and 

one time my selection was The Art of 

Eating by MFK Fisher. This was a 

daunting choice, given that The Art of 

Eating is actually a compilation of five 

books and is 750 pages long, and they had 

only a month to read it. To my credit I 

believe I only assigned sections of the 

book, not the entire read, but my friend’s 

memories may differ. 

In case you’ve not read her, let me just 

say that MFK Fisher didn’t just write about 

food in these books; she wrote about life, 

love, travel, history, culture, and family, 

among other subjects. But food is the lens 

through which she looked at life. 

When we gathered to discuss the 

book, it was interesting to note who were 

the foodies and the non-foodies. The 

non-foodies expressed exasperation at 

having to read so much about food, food, 

food, even though MFK Fisher is a 

wonderful writer. They found the assignment 

irritating at the most and boring at 

the least, while the foodies, including 

myself, were closer to a state of rapture 

discussing her writing. This was a case 

where my reading community and my 

food community overlapped, like those 

circles, Venn diagrams, that math teachers 

make you draw to illustrate which things 

are included, which are not. So deeply 

grounded am I in my love of food that I 

remember being surprised that some of my 

friends did not share this passion. 

I was in my twenties when I first read 

MFK Fisher. It was she who helped 

introduce me to another aspect of the food 

community: people who like to write 

about food. My bookshelves are now full 

of books by these people: Laurie Colwin, 

Molly O’Neill, Calvin Trillin, Waverly 

Root, Patience Gray, Ruth Reichl, Frances 

Mayes, Harold McGee, Shirley O. 

Corriher, Jennifer Prentice, Julie Powell… 

many of these writers include recipes in 

their books, too, though many of their 

books couldn’t technically be called 

cookbooks. Often they are food memoirs, 

or travel memoirs with food in them, 

instructive food science books, or could 

even be called food philosophies. I’ve also 

collected many cookbooks. Cookbooks 

aren’t just full of recipes; they contain the 

stories of people’s lives as well – lives as 

seen through the lens of food. 

It’s not odd that there are so many 

foodies out there. We all have to eat, every 

one of us – so why wouldn’t we all want it 

to be delicious, and make the choice 

several times a day to eat tasty, nutritious 

food? What’s odd is that we aren’t all 

foodies. It’s a cultural thing, I guess, as so

many Americans have not been raised on 

real food. In France or Italy, for example, 

you are going to find a lot more people 

who “savor the flavor.” 

Even though I was raised in that 

1960’s-Southern-California-conveniencefood 

culture, I could still hear the heartbeat 

of some larger food existence. Picture 

me, sixteen years old and eating pizza at an 

Italian restaurant in Reseda, California, 

with my friends. The pizza was very good, 

not your run of the mill Shakey’s or 

Domino’s or some other chain brand. It 

had just the right amount of cheese, a tasty, 

herbaceous tomato sauce, and a thin chewy 

crust. I detected something else too – but 

my friends didn’t notice it. I could taste 

the metal that the crust came in contact 

with – probably the iron floor of the pizza 

oven - this was in the days before woodfired 

brick ovens were popular. I was 

aware then that I could taste things that 

others didn’t notice. Later, I would come 

to be very astute at detecting specific herbs 

and flavorings in foods. 

Years later, I learned about the 

physiology of taste buds. The number of 

taste buds a person is born with will affect 

one’s ability to tolerate spicy foods, because 

the more taste buds a person has, the more 

“heat” one experiences. This would explain 

why some men (who in general have less 

taste buds than women) could tolerate 

spicy foods when I would literally be in 

pain if I tried to eat a hot chili pepper. It 

meant I simply had a lot of taste buds, 

which also explained the way that pizza 

had tasted, and why certain aromas were 

also so powerful. Besides growing up with 

an awareness of food, there was something 

physiological going on with me, and many 

others, as well. 

Twenty-four years ago I moved to 

Santa Barbara. Walking through our 

farmer’s market for the first time I could 

scarcely believe my good fortune. Here 

were people who cared about food the way 

I did. All this bounty, for me? The 

vendors and choices of products have 

probably doubled or tripled since then, so 

every season I feel luckier still to have all 

these amazing raw materials to cook with. 

Once again, my food circle had expanded 

and become more inclusive. 

When my children were little, I 

belonged to a dinner co-op. This is how it 

worked: one night a week I cooked dinner 

for four families. On that day I pretty 

much cooked all day. Late in the afternoon 

when I was presumably finished 

cooking, someone from one of the three 

other families stopped by my house, 

Tupperware in hand, and I packed them 

dinner to go. That meant that three other 

days of the week, I didn’t have to cook 

dinner – we just went to pick up our share. 

This worked pretty well for nearly three 

years, at which point most of us mom’s had 

gone back to work and were too busy to 

take a whole day off to cook. It was the 

women in this group that did most of the 

cooking; all of us were married then but 

the husbands had outside jobs and rarely 

cooked the meal. This was actually fun 

most of the time, and all of us were foodies 

and pretty good cooks. (If you’re going to 

try this, I recommend that all the cooks be 

at about the same level, otherwise somebody’s 

going to be disappointed.) The 

dinner co-op gave me a great sense of 

community. Seeing my friends that often, 

the kids seeing the other kids, touching in 

several days a week, made our town, for 

those three years, feel like a tiny village. 

My best friend, who had also been a 

member of the dinner co-op and had once 

lived next door, is a chef and caterer. 

Other friends are amazing cooks, or they 

have jobs importing food, growing food, 

styling food, photographing food, 

manufacturing food, or writing about 

food. They are nutritionists, or restaurant 

owners, or cooking teachers.

An Interview 

With Josh Tickell 

Creator of “Fuel”

Growing up, I was taught the “3 R’s:” Reuse, Reduce and 

Recycle. I thought they were enough in my part of giving back to 

the community, the city, and the country. I thought that just 

reusing my grocery bags or recycling all my paper and plastic 

products was enough. But deep down inside, I always knew that it 

wasn’t. At times I even thought to myself, “I am but one person, 

what is the point?” Sometimes, I was so hopeless that it was actually 

easier to push it out of my mind entirely. They do say ignorance is 

bliss…or is ignorance just ignorance? Josh Tickell’s documentary 

“Fuel” was definitely an eye-opener. It was also extremely informative, 

inspirational and entertaining. In my opinion, it certainly lives 

up to winning the “Audience Award for Best Documentary” at 

Sundance Film Festival, “Best Screenwriting” at Sedona Film 

Festival, and making Official Selection at Cancun Film Festival, 

Montreal Film Festival and countless other film festivals throughout 

the world. Yes, “I may be but one person,” an individual, but the 

world is made up of many individuals, and “by the power of the 

individual, that is how a revolution will take place.” 

Did you know that the first diesel engine ever invented by 

Rudolf Diesel ran on peanut oil? That the diesel engine today can 

still be run by using vegetable oil and other alternatives — like algae 

oil and bio mass diesel fuel — without the engine having to be 

altered? What about how a majority of the school buses in Las 

Vegas run on Biofuel? Or that Germany invested billions of dollars 

for environmentally friendly alternatives for their people, like 

Biodiesel filling stations, and solar energy? That an oil made from 

algae, produced in about three-days time, is just as good as the oil 

that took millions of years to form — and can be used to make 

household cleaning supplies, industrial chemicals, jet fuels, diesel 

fuels and plastics! Megaflora trees that grow full size in three-years 

time can be planted to clean up polluted soil and fuel can be 

manufactured with used vegetable oil. Trucking companies, 

Disneyworld, Virgin Airlines and many others made or are making 

the attempt to use Biofuels instead of petroleum. Not only do these 

things reduce the release of CO2 into the air, cause less pollution to 

our land and waters (a third of what is produced in the petro-chemical 

industry is toxic waste, which can only be burned, dumped on 

land or dumped in water,) but Biofuels are also more cost efficient 

and do not risk the lives of our young soldiers in a “war on terror” 

— which I consider to be a “war for oil.” The United States of 

America drills two percent of the world’s oil, but consumes 25%. 

What sacrifices are being made so that we can live beyond our 

means? After watching the wonderfully enlightening “Fuel,” that is 

for you to decide for yourself. There is a significant amount one can 

learn by watching this film — more than I can sum up in a short 

little paragraph. 

Josh Tickell took a few moments from his busy schedule to 

answer The Whole Person Calendar’s questions. 

What is the next project you are working on? 

With my wife Rebecca, I am working on a movie that begins with 

the oil spill and traces the money of oil through the government and 

offers solutions. We’re also developing another movie filming in 

Australia that deals with overpopulation and algae. 

Have you inspired many of your friends or people that you meet 

to follow in your footsteps? 

In some way, shape, or form; yes. Some have bought Biodiesel cars,

some have done solar or energy efficiency in their homes, some have 

made green investments – the list goes on, but certainly there is a 

heightened awareness. 

Would you say that the difference between your surroundings in 

Australia and in America had a traumatic effect on you as a child? 

I would definitely say it was a shock. I went from a place with no 

particular restrictions on where I could go or what I could do, to a 

place that had skull and crossbones signs next to the rivers. 

You were almost disqualified by the state for a science project in 

which you tested the local water waste 

levels. Did you feel betrayed by the 

Environmental Protection Agency or 

your own government? 

I was very surprised after doing all the 

water tests I’d done for two years that 

the project was disqualified. It was the 

first sign that things were not as they appeared 

with Louisiana’s EPA. Fast-forward 

20 years and now I’m only 

shocked by their complete disregard for 

“environmental protection.” 

Do you think that America will have 

the chance to implement the type of 

farming you experienced in Europe? 

Yes, there is a strong permaculture and 

small-scale organic farming movement 

in the U.S. I think that will continue to 

grow with CSA’s and community 

gardens. 

Any suggestions on how we can “take 

the power out of big Industry and back 

into the power of our farmers?” 

1) Grow your own food or shop at a 

farmers’ market. 2) Get an electric car 

and solar panels. 3) Take your money 

out of big banks that own oil companies 

and put it into credit unions or a local 

currency. 

In the film, you mentioned that you felt hopeless, asking “what is 

the point to promote a sustainable planet, if we’re going to destroy 

everything?” What suggestions do you have for readers who have a 

similar reaction? 

Get out of the city for a few hours or a few days or a few weeks. 

Nature is very healing. We are addicted to our screens and gadgets. 

Getting away from all of that can bring incredible peace. Can’t get 

away? Try yoga. The fight will always be there to fight. The more 

difficult battle is the one in your mind. If you can be at peace there, 

you can be at peace with anything that’s going on in our society. The 

earth will be fine. Humanity on the other hand has some growing to 

do.

there many more companies out there like them? 

Hundreds. I often say that we picked the people in “Fuel” based on 

who would return our phone calls. It’s really true. There were a lot of 

other companies and are even more today. Of course, you may not see 

them listed on the NASDAQ or written up in Fast Company – but 

they’re out there if you look for them. 

I learned the 3 R’s growing up, but in “Fuel” I learned SB- 

WSPPE; Sustainable Biofuels, Bio Mass, Wind, Solar, Plug-In 

Hybrids/ EU’s, Public Transportation, and Energy Efficiency… 

Whew! That’s a lot to remember. How do you, Josh Tickell, 

implement all these into your daily life yourself and where should 

a person begin if they are new to this? 

For me and my wife, we do our best where we can, when we can. 

We’re not purists. My wife hates styrofoam. I can’t tell you how many 

restaurant owners she’s convinced to 

change to paper products. I am a freak for 

turning lights and things off. It drives 

people in my office crazy. We also do a lot 

of things to reduce our life footprint. We 

work six blocks from our house and drive 

to work on electricity in our plug-in car. 

When we’re on the road, we stay in our 

converted Biodiesel-powered school bus 

with 17 solar panels on it. But truthfully, 

I’m far from perfect. The most important 

thing is to make choices consciously and to 

understand the consequences of each one. 

Next time I purchase a car, I don’t think 

there is any other option other than a 

Hybrid or a diesel engine vehicle. I got 

the impression that a lot of the Biofuel 

filling stations closed down a few years 

back? If I choose to go with a diesel 

engine, is there anywhere in LA now that 

provides that? What about the rest of the 

country? Are there information sites 

online listing places that have that 

available for the public? 

Biodiesel isn’t dead, but it’s definitely got 

one foot in the grave. If you’re committed, 

you can still run bio, but it takes time and 

energy. Www.nearbio.com is the site on 

which the Biodiesel stations are listed. My 

favorite stations are in Berkeley, California and Bentley in Nevada. 

But truthfully, if you’re going to buy a new car, get a plug-in hybrid 

or an electric car – there are six new models coming out in the next 

24 months. The best solution to getting off of oil is to stop driving. 

Next in line is getting a car that doesn’t use oil (i.e. an Electric Car.) 

Do you still have your “Veggie Van?” 

Yes!

is about each person having a consciousness, the way we live affects 

the next person, the community, the country…the planet.”

The Gratitude Attitude 

We have a holiday in the United States, specific to this 

country: Thanksgiving. It is strange, because there is not much 

evidence of real thankfulness. The holiday comes from the pilgrim 

times. They were truly thankful. They had to be. They could be 

sincere, because their thankfulness was about not having died under 

harsh conditions (horribly inclement weather and not nearly enough 

food for the season). If not for the Indians, they would definitely 

have died, and they knew it. The Indians came to their rescue. So 

maybe for a season or two, there was real thankfulness, but that was 

hundreds of years ago, and is just lip service at this point. The 

turkey is good though; it’s an eating holiday now! 

Real thankfulness, genuine appreciation, is 

appreciation for the gift of life, and is no less than 

the actual spiritual path. There is no living 

spiritual tradition, no real spiritual path, that is 

not about — at its core, at its endpoint — the 

development of true thankfulness inside you, 

every single moment. It becomes automatic; it 

becomes like breathing. No other stance is 

possible; no other attitude can march ahead of it. 

And the synonym for it, once it is experienced in 

its full force, is humility — a bone-crushing kind 

of humility. Not some false humbleness, but 

really seeing in the proper perspective — seeing 

that you are just a grain of sand. It is crushing to 

fully see that for the first time. The ego really 

shatters, because you recognize that you have 

been deluding yourself for a lifetime, that you are 

something, when it turns out you are a grain of sand. But in really 

seeing this, tremendous gratitude, tremendous thankfulness arises in 

you, that even as a grain of sand, you are given all this, you are 

allowed all this! It turns out to all be a gift. 

And it is not that gratitude has to be expressed, or gratitude has 

to be lived, or appreciation has to be shown, or devotion has to be 

cultivated. It is literally that you become that. It is literally that you 

breathe it in and out with every breath. The expression becomes 

you. Countless stars, immeasurable space, planets beyond counting 

— who knows how many universes, how many worlds, how many 

realities out there? Vastness beyond what any human mind could 

even try to comprehend; eternity stretching endlessly; infinity with 

no beginning and no end; how can there be any stance, other than 

our complete and utter humility, in the face of that mystery? 

Now, expressing whatever gratitude is there, expressing whatever 

humility is felt, is productive only in the sense that it helps you be in 

that space. Otherwise the expression of it is not really needed. It is 

the living of it that is needed, the feeling of it. But for us fallible 

humans, expressing it, saying it, writing it, thinking it, helps us be 

there. So to that degree, it is useful. But in-and-of itself, the 

expression has no real purpose, other than the expression of an 

overflowing heart. Because, really, it cannot be expressed. You will 

know it is the ultimate gratitude when you find that no expression

adequately says it for you, no word or phrase or even paragraph 

captures it. Then you will know “this is real gratitude,” because it 

will feel so inadequate to say anything. 

Nothing that is based in actual truth can ever be said. At best it 

can be hinted at with words, suggested, but never truly said, never 

accurately expressed. Expression, real expression — real expression of 

gratitude, real expression of overwhelming humility — is always in 

silence. The expression is always a silent expression, literally 

emanating from your being. And people feel it. Certainly you felt it 

from yourself, or for someone else, at some 

moment in your life. Maybe often, maybe rarely, 

but certainly you must have felt it. And if you 

have, now understand that it is just another form 

of love — a more specific experience or expression 

of love itself. It is the more divine aspect of 

love: love as gratitude, love as humility — not 

asking for anything, not grasping for anything, 

just emanating, just endlessly giving, pulsing, 

flowing. Call it “the divine condition.” 

We really just swing back and forth between 

gratitude and indulgence; and indulgence is 

always self-indulgence, and gratitude is always 

selfless gratitude. So oddly enough, this is the 

unlooked-for explanation of everything in life 

— the only possibility: selfless gratitude or 

self-focused indulgence — more or less one or 

the other, in any given moment. And that is 

apparently the human circumstance: how close are we to one or the 

other in this moment? The high road and the low road? The 

self-aggrandizing or the self-surrendering? 

But we are strange creatures doing strange things, and our minds 

do not want to see that reality is actually, in many ways, quite simple. 

Am I moving towards selfishness, or am I moving toward selflessness? 

In this moment, in any moment, in any circumstance, in any given 

thing that is happening that includes us. Such a simple question, 

such a simple dimension to operate on — too simple, for the mind 

— not complicated enough to capture our interest. We would rather 

analyze, we would rather ponder deeply, we would rather come up 

with important answers to significant questions. But the simple 

truth is it is all a question of how close are we to gratitude and 

humility (or how far away). In this moment, are you grateful to be 

breathing and not dead — grateful for life? Or is there some kind of 

self-focused sense of being preoccupied with other things? This can 

always be looked at, any moment, without any great effort: where 

am I in that dimension? On that continuum? This is the whole 

measure of spiritual progress. Complicated philosophies and 

religions and spiritual volumes written, millions of pages — and it all 

boils down to that question — amazingly enough, all are just 

methods to get to that question. 

Gratitude is more than a feeling — it is more like molecules of

your body. It is not an emotion. Real gratitude is more like the 

molecules that comprise you. And yes, it starts as a feeling, it feels 

like an emotion. You felt it in a lesser form, for other reasons, in 

other ways, but if it is to transform you — if it is to be spiritual 

gratitude, divine love — then it is more like the molecules of your 

body. You feel it in a different way, you feel it deep in you — not as 

just a feeling like any other. It transports you higher, it gives you 

the sense of something bigger. And perhaps you have felt this, 

either for a moment, or even many times, or for long periods. 

Anytime that experience is there, I encourage you to give 

yourself fully to it, to let it expand in you whenever it appears. It is 

the highest inspiration. It is the highest possible expression of 

spiritual depth. Just the experiencing of it opens you, expands you, 

evolves you, transforms you, connects you. 

Everyone who says “I am searching for truth,” everyone who 

says “I want realization,” everyone who says “I want god in my life,” 

is saying (whether they know it or not) that they want to travel to 

gratitude — they want gratitude to take over their life. And usually 

we don’t know that that is where it ends — that is where it ends up. 

We think that where it ends up is in some kind of higher consciousness, 

that we know something more, understand something more 

about existence, operate on some kind of higher level. And whether 

that is the case or not, we end up at humility and gratitude. That is 

the higher level. Then there is real, genuine thankfulness — for a 

piece of bread. Then there is real, true humility — at being able to 

walk and talk. Then hearing a symphony, inside you, brings you to 

your knees. Then the everyday becomes magical, mystical. Then 

the unknown penetrates all the way, and you find yourself living 

more in the beyond than right here in this world. Because that is 

where this world is, smack dab in the middle of the beyond. And 

only gratitude, only humility, let you see that fully. It is a circle: 

Because gratitude and humility take you there, and when you get 

there, you are given more gratitude and humility. It just expands. 

And then real prayer is possible, which is just the ceaseless experience 

of gratitude. Then it does not even occur to ask for anything; 

the only feeling is to involuntarily say “thank you” for everything. 

Then anything is enough. Then everything is enough. Then 

whatever is wrong, is just part of what is right. Then whatever you 

don’t like, doesn’t matter anymore. Then truth is more important 

than you are. 

And oddly enough, it does help to act “as if.” So until it is true 

of you, and until it is more true with every breath, it actually does 

help to remember, and to act as if. And if real humility comes to 

you, it will always be accompanied by gratitude. And if real 

gratitude rises up in you, it will always include genuine humility. 

So that is the measure. To know if the gratitude is real, check if 

humility came with it. To know if the humility is real, check if it 

includes deep gratitude (because false humility is possible and 

non-genuine gratitude is possible; we are complex enough that it is 

possible). But it is easy to check if it is real.

Learning Kabbalah Through Humor 

Upon waking in the morning, a 

woman told her husband, “I just 

dreamed that you gave me a pearl 

necklace for our anniversary. What do 

you think it means?” 

“You’ll know tonight,” he said 

mysteriously. 

That evening, the man came home 

with a small wrapped package and 

gave it to his wife. 

Delighted, she ripped open the 

wrapping paper and opened the box. 

Inside lay a book entitled, “ The 

Meaning of Dreams.” 

Kabbalah teaches us that there is a 

direct parallel between our relationship 

with God and our relationships with the 

people in our lives. Whether we are talking 

about our spouse, our children, our 

parents, our co-workers or our friends, we 

can uncover some far-reaching truths 

about our relationships by looking at the 

way in which we relate to God. 

Take prayer, for example: the way we 

communicate with God. Just as we praise 

God for His blessings and ask Him to 

bestow upon us health and wealth, we 

must heap praise upon the people in our 

lives, and we must not hesitate to acknowledge 

our interdependence on them. And 

just as God “listens” without adding His 

own judgment, attitude or point of view, 

we must practice listening “with nothing 

added.” Sometimes we can best serve our 

neighbors’ needs by simply hearing their 

communication and not saying a word in 

response. I guarantee that if you practice 

this diligently, you won’t make the mistake 

of buying your loved one a book instead of 

the “pearl necklace” she is dreaming of.

Mollie dials her mother’s number and immediately begins to complain, “Mama! 

Oh, Mama! This is the worst day of my life!” 

“What is it, Darling?” 

“We’re snowed in here. The car wouldn’t start this morning. I think both kids 

have the measles. The doctor can’t come until five o’clock. I’m coming down with a 

cold. The freezer is broken and all the food is spoiled. The house is a mess. And on 

top of that, Mama, twenty ladies from my Hadassah Chapter are coming to play 

mah-jongg today!” 

“Don’t worry, Darling! Mama’s here! I’ll take the bus to the subway, and I’ll walk 

the twelve blocks to your house. I’ll make sure the kids are nice and comfortable, 

I’ll call the freezer repairman, I’ll tell the deli to fix up some platters for delivery, 

I’ll clean the house, and then I’ll make a delicious dinner for Melvin from the 

leftovers.” 

“Melvin? Who’s Melvin?” asks Mollie. “My husband’s name is Richard.” 

Reluctantly, Mollie asks, “Did I dial 516-555-3435?” 

“No…you dialed 516-555-3445,” moans the voice on the other end. 

A long pause ensues, after which Mollie heaves a long, tortured sigh. “Does that 

mean you’re not coming?” 

.

Rabbi Israel Baal Shem Tov (1698- 

1760), the father of the Chassidic movement 

taught that we must have total self- 

sacrifice and dedication for the love of our 

fellow human being, even towards one 

whom we have never seen! So, in case 

you’re wondering, “Mama” DID go to 

Mollie’s house, even though they’d never 

met! Why? Because the way we are 

connected to each other is precisely the 

way in which we are bound to God – in a 

partnership that goes beyond human logic 

and reasonableness. When one is connected 

on that level – the soul level – there is 

only connectedness. There are no external 

factors that get in the way. 

A young woman brings her fiancé 

home to meet her parents. After 

dinner, the father invites the fiancé to 

his study to get to know him better. 

“So what are your plans?” the father 

asks the young man. 

“I am a Torah scholar, so I will 

continue full-time in my studies,” he 

replies. 

“Admirable,” the father says, “But 

what will you do to provide for my 

daughter?” 

“I will study,” the young man replies, 

“and God will provide for us.” 

“And children?” asks the father. “How 

will you support children?” 

“I will concentrate on my studies,” the 

young man replies, “And God will 

provide for us.” 

The conversation proceeds like this, 

and each time the father inquires, the 

young idealist insists that God will 

provide. 

Later, the girl’s mother asks her 

husband, “How did it go, Honey?” 

The father answers, “Well, he has no 

job and no plans, but the good news 

is, he thinks I’m God.” 

It’s true that we must trust in God, 

but did you know that God trusts in us 

also? 

There is a short prayer, Modeh Ani, 

which we say to God the moment we wake 

up in the morning. It is translated this way: 

“I offer thanks to You, living and eternal 

King, for You have restored my soul within 

me; Your faithfulness is great.” The last 

phrase, “Your faithfulness is great,” seems 

unusual. Shouldn’t we say, “Our faithfulness 

towards You is great?” Well, no, 

because expressed this way, it underscores 

God’s trust in us. It is saying, in effect, that 

even though we didn’t quite live up to His 

expectation yesterday, or any of the days 

before that, He trusts us to succeed at it 

TODAY, and thus continues to return our 

soul to us to give us another chance. As 

we’ve mentioned, according to Kabbalah, 

God is not subject to time. There is no 

“yesterday” or “today” in God’s eyes. He 

always trusts that we’ll do the right thing, 

and when we fall short, He doesn’t keep 

score as to who did what to whom and 

when. 

Our trust in God, and God’s trust in 

us, teach us how to be in relationship with 

everyone around us. 

A businessman known for not paying 

his bills is haggling endlessly with a 

supplier. 

“Why are you haggling with him?” 

asks his partner. “You’re not going to 

pay him anyway.” 

“I know, I know,” answers the 

businessman. “But I like this guy, 

and I want to keep his losses to a 

minimum.” 

And, of course, our relationship with 

each other would not be complete without 

discussing the element of love. 

Rabbi Levi Yitzchak of Berditchev 

(1740-1810), who was famous for his 

unconditional love for his fellow man, 

once told one of his students that he 

learned about love from a conversation 

between two drunks lying in the gutter: 

“One drunk said to the other, ‘You don’t 

love me.’ ‘Of course I love you,’ said his 

friend. ‘No you don’t. Because if you really 

loved me, you would know what hurts 

me.’” 

Most people think that loving 

someone means doing something for them, 

speaking loving words to them, giving 

them a gift, etc. These are expressions of 

love, but true love can be learned from our 

relationship with God. The Kabbalists tell 

us that God created the universe in order 

to experience love. The great sage Rabbi 

Akiva, who lived around the second 

century, said that “loving your fellow as 

yourself is a great and fundamental 

principle in the Torah.” In another famous 

story, Rabbi Hillel, who lived several 

generations before Rabbi Akiva, tells an 

impatient proselyte who asked to be taught 

the entire Torah while he stood on one 

foot, “That which is hateful to you, do not 

do to your fellow. The rest is commentary; 

go and learn.” 

All these are ways of teaching us to be 

sensitive to what hurts our fellow human 

beings. Once we are able to feel their 

suffering, we are on the way to truly loving 

them. So what is our relationship with 

each other? It is one in which each person 

works to improve in the areas of communication, 

partnership, trust and love, and, by 

developing a sensitivity to others around 

us, we are able to express that relationship 

on the soul level, which is always, ALWAYS 

loving.

Gratitude and humility are the actual 

coins of the spiritual realm. No other 

coinage buys you anything in that realm 

— but gratitude and humility buy you 

everything. That is the exchange the divine 

is asking for. Anything you let go of, 

anything you become unattached to, 

disidentified from, allows more space for 

gratitude, and riper conditions for humility. 

Detachment is not an end in itself. It has 

no ultimate purpose. It just creates better 

conditions for gratitude and humility. The 

selfish part of that is that complete and real 

detachment — non-attachment — means

an end to real suffering. Because how can 

there be suffering, if you are not attached to 

anything? But if you really look deeply it is 

a “selfish” goal: “I want to not suffer 

anymore.” There’s nothing wrong with it. 

It works as a fantastic motivator. And you 

can reach a life of non-suffering, but it is 

not the end — it is only the endpoint of 

the selfish part. The selfless part is when 

you are taken over by gratitude and 

humility. Then it is not about whether you 

suffer or do not suffer. It is about the 

vastness and greatness that is. And then 

you are not quite so worried whether you 

are going to suffer tomorrow more, or less. 

Because then it is possible to be grateful for 

whatever comes. Because all of it is 

recognized as a gift — an undeserved, 

unasked-for gift. 

Really, ultimately, you never asked for 

anything, except just not to suffer. That is 

how humble human beings really are. All 

we ask is, “Please just let me not suffer.” It 

is a very humble request, and totally 

possible for any sincere heart. But many do 

not want to get that sincere, so they do not 

get close to it. But many do. 

What I’m trying to point out is, there 

are stages beyond that, stages that have 

nothing to do with anything personal, 

anything individual, anything that can be 

categorized as “only of this lifetime.” You 

can go so much higher, so much further, 

and every sincere heart is capable. That is 

what we mean by “beyond self:” beyond 

the beyond. This is more important than 

whether you are rich or poor. This is more 

important than whether you are healthy or 

sick. This is more important than whether 

your future is bright or bleak. This is what 

is really important. This is what matters. 

This is “the profound.” 

It turns out it’s not abstract. It’s about 

how is this life being experienced right 

now? — in this body, in this place, in this 

moment, as this me. That is not abstract at 

all. That is your life-blood, that is your 

very breath. It is real. It pulses. It radiates 

out with every heartbeat. And all of it has 

been given to you. You didn’t buy it in a 

store. You didn’t ask for it, and then it got 

delivered. You came with it, pre-given, 

unbidden, just gifted to you. When you 

consider that, it starts to make sense, why 

gratitude is the basic coin of the realm. 

So start to see gratitude and humility 

not as nice human virtues — not as 

desirable traits or qualities to be developed 

because they have some intrinsic benefit 

and make you a nicer person (certainly 

they will). But it is much more significant 

than that. It is the very fabric of reality. It 

is the very breath of the divine. Start to see 

gratitude and humility as the highest 

possibilities, as the stones the path is made 

out of. Then anywhere you look: the 

benediction! Then everything that is: the 

divine blessing! Then truly: Thanksgiving!

I do have friends who are not in the 

food business, professionally. They might 

be engineers, or small business owners, or 

nurses. But damn if a lot of them don’t 

love to cook too! 

My food community has grown so 

much bigger lately. Besides our active local 

food scene, Slow Food, the non-profit food 

advocacy group of which I am a member, 

the Food Network, the food blogosphere, 

all have me reeling with the largess of 

people fascinated with food. Where did all 

these people come from? I can find recipes 

for just about anything on the web. It 

gives me the sense of that small village 

once again, and that I have more in 

common with others, not less. 

I facilitate a cookbook-writing 

workshop. I’ve taught cooking for many 

years, but this class is a little different. It’s 

small and intimate. Students write in class 

and share their stories of cooking and life 

as well as their recipes, some of which 

they’ve made for years and have been 

handed down from their families. These 

recipes and stories are their legacy. 

I remember when I wrote my first 

book, and that exhilarating feeling of 

sharing something so intimate as one’s best 

recipes with the public. It’s still excites me 

when someone tells me that they cooked 

one of my recipes. They often change an 

ingredient or a few to suit themselves, and 

feel they must confess this. But I know 

that the words I shared had the power to 

inspire them, which makes me really happy 

that I put them out there to be read. 

A kind of magic happens for me in the 

class, as my students pour forth their food 

creativity through their words, their family 

stories, and their cooking. Frequently I 

can’t wait to repeat one of the recipes we 

test in class, it was so delicious. Each 

student has her own unique perspective 

and style of cooking, each one contributing 

to the food community, ever-widening 

the village circle.

Quail Springs work began with facilitating learning journeys into nature for 

children from all walks of life. In 2004, Quail Springs acquired a permanent 

location on a 450 acre tract of land in the Santa Barbara backcountry of the upper 

Cuyama Valley. It has since evolved into a Permaculture teaching center and farm 

with courses in sustainable building, gardening and animal husbandry practices, 

water harvesting, animal tracking, and so on. 

On Saturday, October 2nd an ominous, freak thunder storm descended on 

the Quail Springs valley. Beginning with a huge hail storm, in a half hour over 3 

inches of rain fell followed quickly by a wall of water that careened down the 

canyon from Mt Pinos spanning at some points nearly 800 feet across and 15 feet 

deep. Once the waters receded, sand and silt were deposited as far as the eye 

could see. 

Totally destroyed were the garden, the pond, all water harvesting structures 

and irrigation systems, settling tanks, much of the fencing, and virtually all 

equipment and tools. A trailer now lives down canyon several hundred yards and 

countless other parts of their infrastructure are missing or buried. The well was 

badly damaged and large, protective cottonwood trees completely uprooted. 

Six years of work building soil and laying infrastructure was washed away to 

be replaced in just a few minutes by over $50,000 in damage. Remarkably, their 

sustainably built structures fared rather well. 

As Kolmi Majundar said, “Really, I don’t think anyone can know in the age of 

climate change/ ‘global weirding’ what to expect with certain weather patterns, 

particularly combined with the large scale degradation to the greater watersheds 

that we all live in – the impact of the weather is more damaging to lower areas in 

the watershed in a landscape where the upper elevations have lost much of their 

forests…we must all do what we can to work together, collaborating with our 

neighbors above, below and all around in our watershed communities.” 

The Quail Springs staff is working to rebuild the water systems in preparation 

for courses scheduled in November. They especially need financial assistance with 

the huge task of rebuilding and remaking the infrastructure that is the very essence 

of their work.

Thanksgiving. For those of us 

raised in the U.S. the holiday 

brings up images of a Norman 

Rockwell-like table, whose 

centerpiece is always a huge 

and perfectly roasted turkey. 

But, what about those who, for 

whatever reason, have chosen 

a meatless diet? How can we 

feel like we’re really participating 

in this great American feast 

without the star of the show? 

Lucky for vegetarians, autumn is 

a great time for rich and flavorful 

foods. Our farmer’s markets are 

still full of orange pumpkins and 

golden squash, and the dark 

green leaves of kale are at their 

best after a touch of cool 

weather. With beans for protein, 

and the added warmth of 

chipotle, this stew satisfies the 

craving for a rich repast. Adding 

Manchego or other Italian 

cheese to the finished stew 

adds another note of flavor and 

protein. Rounded out with 

traditional side dishes and 

maybe a pecan pie for dessert, 

you and your family might not 

even miss the bird.

Italian-Style 

Autumn Stew 

serves 4 to 6 

1 cup chopped yellow onions 

2 garlic cloves,minced 

2 1/2 cups peeled and cubed 

winter squash* 

2 celery stalks, diced 

2 1/2 cups cubed potatoes 

(optional) 

1 teaspoon dried oregano 

2 teaspoons good sea salt 

fresh ground black pepper to 

taste 

6 cups water or vegetable broth 

4 cups chopped kale, with ribs 

removed 

1 small can tomato paste 

1 1/2 cups cooked or canned 

cannellini beans 

1 dried chipotle pepper, chopped 

optional grated Manchego, 

Romano, or Parmesan cheese 

* Use a firm, rich winter squash, 

like acorn, delicata, or buttercup. 

Warm the oil in a large soup 

pot--I use a dutch oven-- on 

medium heat. Add the onions, 

garlic, and chopped pepper; 

sauté for 5 minutes. Add cubed 

squash, celery, optional potatoes, 

oregano, salt, pepper, and 

broth or water and cook for 10 

minutes or until the potatoes are 

almost done. Stir in 1/2 can of 

the tomato paste thinned with 

broth. Add kale and beans and 

simmer for another 5 to 7 

minutes, until kale’s tender. 

Adjust salt and pepper to taste. 

Serve very hot with cheese on 

the side.

In early 2009, my co-founder and I embarked on building Many Paths World 

Service, a nonprofit whose mission is to advocate for the recognition of universal 

Oneness by supporting individualized sacred purpose, compassionate service and 

interspirituality. We had no idea that much of our time for the last two years would 

be devoted to seeking out and cultivating new relationships, one by one, with 

neighbors, business owners, healing artists, teachers, conscious organizations, 

spiritual centers or state departments. In fact, our willingness to learn from others 

and share our resources has catapulted our vision across the western desert all the 

way to Santa Fe. 

Building community is often a slow process. It requires tremendous introspection, 

thoughtful communication and fearless interest in bringing together similar visions 

for the common good of all. While the over-arching missions for many include 

service, awakening, peace or social justice, individual agendas often present 

obstacles to collaboration or compromise which undoubtedly requires additional 

effort and demands a certain selfless surrender. 

There’s an automatic tendency to act in isolation, to do the work by ourselves, to 

hoard what is perceived as a limited audience or depleting financial resources. The 

City of Angels is awash with spiritual activities and entrepreneurship offering 

mind-boggling numbers of workshops, classes or lectures to open us more deeply 

to our souls. However, with so much attention on the individual, our city begins to 

look less angelic and more archaic in its patterns of doing business, raising money 

or serving segments of humanity. 

The wave of our future beckons us to dive into our community, to nurture supportive 

partnerships, to find ways to share what we know and what we have. Ultimately, we 

create the space for everyone to shine in an egoless spotlight, but, most importantly, 

we learn to welcome those we serve to claim their light. Sometimes it’s a tough 

garden to till, but the labor bears unimagined fruit. Let us all release the toil for 

self-preservation and embrace the limitless power experienced in the divine web of 

community. 

“How much time and money should be spent on marketing and can you 

suggest some successful marketing strategies?” – Michael, Santa Monica 

First, create an annual budget divided into months while leaving out marketing. 

Depending on the nature of your business, you’ll want to reflect seasonal influences 

on revenues and expenses. After you’ve projected your costs, plug in an additional 

10-20% of the total for marketing. Social media, face-to-face networking, sending 

out a brief email newsletter, celebrating your clients, holding an open house or 

creating a resourceful blog are all good ways to establish a presence. However, 

leading a group to volunteer regularly in community service, meeting with your 

neighbors several blocks in all directions and opening your space to others who not 

only complement your goals but bring in their clients and friends will do far more for 

your business than any expensive ad campaign.

life…Holding your place in that, your 

inspiration or ‘ah-ha’ moment. Let that be 

your placeholder until that particular field 

you are holding can be powerful enough to 

manifest something greater from that 

space.” 

According to Beckwith, having a 

placeholder in gratitude, inspiration, or joy 

is a powerful tool for building a consciousness 

of health and harmony in our lives. 

But you first have “to understand what 

meditation is.” 

“Meditation is paying undistractable 

attention to reality,” said Beckwith, “reality 

with a capital R, not that which is 

transitory but that which is eternal. The 

qualities of love, harmony, compassion, 

peace, joy, intelligence—these are everywhere 

present as the imprint of Eternality. 

There are many techniques of meditation 

that transport the meditator into the 

realm of non-dual reality, and it is within 

those seconds, moments or hours of its 

duration that one is truly meditating or 

communing with Reality, revealing to the 

practitioner his/her Original Face.” 

Learning to respond to the highest 

and best within us is the focus of his two 

books, Spiritual Liberation ~ Fulfilling Your 

Soul’s Potential, and The Answer Is You, 

both of which emphasize the importance 

of community and community service. 

“Community is a place of inspiration 

and remembrance. When you come 

together in an inspirational, intentional 

community you become inspired to live by 

spiritual principles. You are provided a 

context for living beyond the “me plan” 

through compassionate service to others. 

You circulate your energy beyond self-involvement. 

You begin to connect with the 

fact of interconnectedness with all other 

beings which contributes to the evolution 

of heart and consciousness. 

“It also provides the context for deeper 

practice,” continued Beckwith. “In 

community there will be moments when 

you feel good, moments when you feel 

agitated, moments when you regress and 

then progress. In other words, community 

is a profound mirror, because it’s hard to 

hide in community.” 

In response to those who would 

criticize this philosophy as impractical or 

“otherworldly,” Beckwith had this to say:

According to Beckwith, his first book, Spiritual 

Liberation, was written in response to requests to 

describe the universal spiritual principles he espouses 

and the practices he teaches. His second book, The 

Answer Is You, was written to be accessible to everyone 

and is currently televised on PBS nationwide. (This 

month it will be released as a CD set.) 

Never one to rob life of the value of humor, 

Beckwith said he and his wife have their own 

rendition of “spiritual stimulus.” 

“Rickie and I paint a picture of what is within us 

and the kind of life we can have,” said Beckwith. 

“There is something within us seeking to emerge. So 

we consciously invite it to express in our every day life. 

We ask within what it is and explore it until it comes 

into expression as us. Every true adventurer or artist is 

trying to download something out of time and space, 

whether it is in art, poetry, or architecture, whatever. I
