Friends as Advocates
In the past three years, Friends
of the London Public Library has
advocated strongly for our public
library system during the City of
London budget setting process.
Each time, we have been part of
a successful appeal to keep the
library budget intact. Each time, it
becomes more difficult.
Recently, Friends’ co-president
Mary Oliver and vice-president
Connie Sullivan attended two
sessions at the Ontario Library
Association’s annual conference
specifically directed to members of
library Friends organizations. The
sessions focused, not surprisingly,
on the advocacy role such groups
increasingly must play in order
that their respective communities
continue to enjoy the myriad
benefits of a healthy library system.
Rural and urban, large, small and
mid-size libraries all find themselves
vying for increasingly scarce
funding in their municipalities, and
it is vital that they have a strong
voice when decisions are made
about where that funding will go.
There is an undeniable link that
exists between a highly literate,
engaged community and one with a
vital public library system.
2006 is a municipal election year.
We look to those citizens of London
who value their public library to
assist us in ensuring that those
who are elected to represent us
understand the critical need to
keep our libraries central to our
neighbourhoods and open and
accessible to all.
Voting begins March 21 and ends
April 1. There are several ways to
cast your ballot:
• at the debate,
• by paper ballot at the
BookStore at Western and all
While a final tally of books has not yet
been made, a special thank you must go
to the wonderful group of Friends who
enabled this program and the generous
bookstores that participated: Coles,
Chapters,
Oxford Book Shop, Scholars’ Choice,
The Toy Shoppe of London, the
Bookstore at Western
and Wendell Holmes
Bookshops.
Many of these
bookstores continue
to offer a 20%
discount throughout
the year on books
purchased for the
A Book For Every
Child® program.
Remember too that new books
may also be donated to your local
Library branch at any time, and
cash donations will allow library
staff to fill year round needs. (Tax
receipts are given for donations
over $10.)
Thank you for giving to A Book for
Every Child® and helping a child
become a life-long reader.
Friends’ Library Store a success!
If you still haven’t visited our Library Store, conveniently located in the
Hudson’s Bay passageway just outside the entrance to the Central Library,
this is your invitation to do so. Friendly, knowledgeable volunteer staff
are pleased to help you select fine-quality, gently-used hardcover or
paperback books sold at low prices. Currently, we are featuring two new
