Sustainability?<br />

I sometimes learn that my opini<strong>on</strong>s<br />

are actually shared by others. The validati<strong>on</strong><br />

typically comes from individuals operating independent<br />

businesses under similar circumst<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>ces.<br />

Over the past few m<strong>on</strong>ths as AICC<br />

chairm<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>, I have had the great pleasure <strong>of</strong><br />

meeting other box makers who know that <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

effective sales relati<strong>on</strong>ship requires <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g> h<strong>on</strong>est<br />

resp<strong>on</strong>se to the positi<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d needs <strong>of</strong> a customer.<br />

My comp<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>y makes a habit <strong>of</strong> catering<br />

to dem<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>ding customers <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d yet our troubles<br />

are minor in comparis<strong>on</strong> to those faced by<br />

some North Americ<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g> m<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>ufacturers. With<br />

this in mind, some <strong>of</strong> you will not be surprised<br />

to hear that I am very uncomfortable<br />

with the power that Wal-Mart holds over our<br />

c<strong>on</strong>sumer products industry.<br />

My unforgiving list <strong>of</strong> complaints about Wal-<br />

Mart begins with the fact that the stores are<br />

ubiquitous. The small corner stores that <strong>on</strong>ce<br />

dotted the l<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>dscape have generally v<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>ished<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d g<strong>on</strong>e are the jobs these extinct comp<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>ies<br />

<strong>on</strong>ce provided. In their place st<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>ds<br />

Wal-Mart, with 8,400 stores around the world<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d roughly 2 milli<strong>on</strong> employees. When I say<br />

hello to the young wom<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g> greeting customers<br />

at our local store, I c<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>not help but w<strong>on</strong>der<br />

if this individual lost her previous job due<br />

to her new employer’s market affect. Once<br />

inside the store, I am c<strong>on</strong>fr<strong>on</strong>ted with aisle<br />

after aisle <strong>of</strong> every c<strong>on</strong>ceivable item a c<strong>on</strong>sumer<br />

could desire, <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d yet I am c<strong>on</strong>st<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>tly<br />

compelled to look for the country where these<br />

products were made before making a purchasing<br />

decisi<strong>on</strong>.<br />

As the world’s largest retailer, with more th<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

400 billi<strong>on</strong> dollars in net sales in 2010, Wal-<br />

Mart has set the t<strong>on</strong>e for <strong>of</strong>f-shoring <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d is<br />

therefore partially resp<strong>on</strong>sible for the decline<br />

<strong>of</strong> m<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>ufacturing jobs in North America.<br />

The comp<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>y has, in the past, been accused<br />

<strong>of</strong> predatory pricing, selling inferior quality<br />

products, <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d neglecting to provide health<br />

care to their employees. Although it is not<br />

my intent to find fault with a comp<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>y for<br />

being extremely successful, in my experience,<br />

the big box retailer c<strong>on</strong>trols the relati<strong>on</strong>ship<br />

with their product m<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>ufacturers <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d settlements<br />

c<strong>on</strong>cerning price, inventory, deliveries,<br />

packaging, <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d product losses are most <strong>of</strong>ten<br />

at the expense <strong>of</strong> the m<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>ufacturer.<br />

In 1992, the sale <strong>of</strong> imports at Wal-Mart was<br />

increased to buoy flagging pr<strong>of</strong>its. About that<br />

same time a “Buy Americ<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>” program was<br />

shown to be flawed in that the products being<br />

advertised were actually made overseas.<br />

Wal-Mart was similarly stung by critical media<br />

exposes in the Los Angeles Times in 2003 <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d<br />

by the PBS program Fr<strong>on</strong>tline in 2004. So<strong>on</strong><br />

thereafter; the retailer sounded a drumbeat<br />

call <strong>of</strong> the societal need for sustainability.<br />

This newly minted envir<strong>on</strong>mental advocate<br />

was now arguing for healthier foods, reduced<br />

packaging, <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d supply chain reducti<strong>on</strong>s in<br />

c<strong>on</strong>tinued <strong>on</strong> page 7<br />

greenhouse gases. These requirements<br />

were to be accomplished by<br />

vendors <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d suppliers at no increased<br />

cost to Wal-Mart. Cost reducti<strong>on</strong>s are<br />

expected to come from the raw materials,<br />

fuels, <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d fibers engineered<br />

out <strong>of</strong> the supply chain. Participati<strong>on</strong><br />

in Wal-Mart’s sustainability programs<br />

are not <strong>of</strong>ficially m<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>datory but the<br />

retailer has made clear that it intends<br />

to do business <strong>on</strong>ly with those who<br />

comply.<br />

I suspect that Wal-Mart’s sustainability<br />

efforts were promulgated primar-<br />

ily as a public relati<strong>on</strong>s tactic rather<br />

th<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g> out <strong>of</strong> c<strong>on</strong>cern for the envir<strong>on</strong>ment.<br />

This marketing strategy may<br />

have also been approved because <strong>of</strong><br />

the perceived potential for cost savings.<br />

As implied at the outset, m<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>y<br />

AICC box makers have packaging<br />

customers who must deal directly<br />

with this retailing force <strong>of</strong> nature.<br />

Wal-Mart’s dem<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d for reduced packaging<br />

weight may so<strong>on</strong> cause some <strong>of</strong><br />

us in the industry to reengineer our<br />

products with lighter weight liners.<br />

The insistence for higher recycled<br />

c<strong>on</strong>tent should be familiar territory<br />

for every<strong>on</strong>e within the corrugated<br />

industry, where renewable paper<br />

resources <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d the value <strong>of</strong> old corrugated<br />

c<strong>on</strong>tainers has been a l<strong>on</strong>gtime<br />

business practice. It would be a<br />

serious mistake to ignore the pr<strong>of</strong>ound<br />

effects this highly successful<br />

comp<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>y has had <strong>on</strong> the worldwide<br />

org<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>izati<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> retailing, m<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>ufacturing<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d packaging.<br />

As our customers c<strong>on</strong>tinue to make<br />

more challenging dem<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>ds, it is<br />

import<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>t to remember that they too<br />

may be held accountable to the requirements<br />

<strong>of</strong> other comp<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>ies. An<br />

effective sales relati<strong>on</strong>ship requires<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g> h<strong>on</strong>est resp<strong>on</strong>se to the positi<strong>on</strong><br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d needs <strong>of</strong> the customer, which<br />

requires some underst<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>ding <strong>of</strong> c<strong>on</strong>text.<br />

Although I have c<strong>on</strong>cerns about<br />

the origin, intent, <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d c<strong>on</strong>sequences<br />

<strong>of</strong> this newly formed sustainability<br />

m<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>tra, it has become <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g> integral<br />

comp<strong>on</strong>ent <strong>of</strong> the packaging industry.<br />

Fortunately, we as independents<br />

have the flexibility <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d resources<br />

to meet these dem<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>ds. <strong>Corrugated</strong><br />

c<strong>on</strong>tainers are now <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d have always<br />

been renewable, recyclable, <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d<br />

biodegradable. We are producing a<br />

product with superior envir<strong>on</strong>mental<br />

attributes.<br />

The Comp<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>y That Plays<br />

Together . . . Succeeds Together!<br />

By Tom Nugent<br />

At Volk Packaging Corporati<strong>on</strong> – where <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g> enlightened comp<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>y m<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>agement enthusiastically<br />

supports everything from “mock-Olympic skiing events” to “Halloween costume c<strong>on</strong>tests” to yearly<br />

award-b<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>quets – they’ve taken “togetherness” to a whole new level.<br />

Victory!<br />

Moments after zooming across the<br />

finish line, the winning skier threw<br />

his h<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>ds into the air <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d then cut<br />

loose with a joyful shout: “Yes!”<br />

For D<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g> Brochu, a 31-year-old<br />

shipping supervisor at <strong>on</strong>e <strong>of</strong> Maine’s<br />

most successful business enterprises<br />

– Volk Packaging Corporati<strong>on</strong> – it<br />

was a moment <strong>of</strong> supreme triumph.<br />

“Yeah, it was a struggle all the way!”<br />

said Brochu, who most days is<br />

resp<strong>on</strong>sible for shipping out m<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>y<br />

different packaging products at the<br />

Volk facility in Biddeford, Maine.<br />

“I was truly in the battle <strong>of</strong> my life,<br />

but as I approached the finish line,<br />

I knew I still had a ch<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>ce to win.<br />

“It took everything I had, but my<br />

finishing kick was decisive. And<br />

right now, I’m just grateful to be<br />

savoring the thrill <strong>of</strong> victory . . .<br />

rather th<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g> the ag<strong>on</strong>y <strong>of</strong> defeat!”<br />

For a few sec<strong>on</strong>ds, he sounded like<br />

a superstar athlete <strong>on</strong> Wide World<br />

<strong>of</strong> Sports. But then a moment later,<br />

the high-spirited Brochu was roaring<br />

with laughter.<br />

Why? Because the “dem<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>ding<br />

course” <strong>on</strong> which the fun-loving<br />

associate had just defeated five<br />

other hard-charging Volk “Olympic<br />

skiers” was exactly 20 feet l<strong>on</strong>g.<br />

Tucked away in a back corner <strong>of</strong> the<br />

factory, it c<strong>on</strong>sisted entirely <strong>of</strong> naked<br />

c<strong>on</strong>crete, without a single snowflake<br />

in sight.<br />

And the “skis” <strong>on</strong> which these “Volk<br />

Winter Olympics” athletes had just<br />

competed?<br />

Douglas, Kenneth, Benjamin <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d Derek<br />

Volk<br />

They were actually crafted from<br />

lengths <strong>of</strong> corrugated board, right <strong>of</strong>f<br />

a Volk machine.<br />

Like the “<strong>Corrugated</strong> All-Star<br />

Bowling Champi<strong>on</strong>ship” <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d the<br />

“Internati<strong>on</strong>al Fold-Stuff-<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d-Seal,”<br />

these recent “Winter Olympics”<br />

(inspired by Vice President Derek<br />

Volk) were powerful examples<br />

<strong>of</strong> the forward-thinking Volk<br />

Packaging Corporati<strong>on</strong>’s remarkably<br />

enlightened m<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>agement philosophy.<br />

That unusual – but also<br />

very effective – philosophy<br />

was recently defined by<br />

President Douglas Volk as<br />

follows:<br />

“If we’re going to work well<br />

together, we also have to be<br />

able to play well together!”<br />

Volk me<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>s it, too. At Volk<br />

Packaging, founded in 1967<br />

by Ken <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d Benjamin Volk<br />

– two creatively minded<br />

businessmen with a knack<br />

for building “team spirit”<br />

am<strong>on</strong>g their associates by including<br />

them in every aspect <strong>of</strong> their fastgrowing<br />

enterprise – the ethos is<br />

egalitari<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g> . . . <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d the reigning<br />

attitude <strong>on</strong> the factory floor is playful<br />

creativity.<br />

“<strong>Corrugated</strong> Hockey Games” . . .<br />

And a Knockout Newsletter<br />

Spend a few hours h<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>ging out<br />

with Douglas <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d Derek Volk at<br />

their modern, 165,000-square-foot<br />

facility located in southern Maine,<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d you’ll so<strong>on</strong> discover that they<br />

become very serious whenever they<br />

talk about treating their people well.<br />

“At Volk Packaging, we d<strong>on</strong>’t refer<br />

to our people as ‘employees,’ but as<br />

‘associates’,” says the 62-year-old top<br />

exec at the highly successful, New<br />

Engl<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d-based packaging supplier.<br />

“We’re also careful to never describe<br />

our associates as ‘working for us.’<br />

“Our associates work with us, day in<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d day out, in a shared enterprise<br />

where they’re respected <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d valued<br />

Playing Together Often: A<br />

Winning Strategy for Success?<br />

Describing his “virtually zero”<br />

turnover rate in recent decades,<br />

Douglas Volk makes a key point<br />

about the import<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>ce <strong>of</strong> h<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>ging<br />

<strong>on</strong>to the people who help to bring<br />

you business success. Says the<br />

veter<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g> m<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>ager <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d community<br />

volunteer (he just finished a<br />

seven-year term as a member <strong>of</strong><br />

the Maine Turnpike Authority):<br />

“I d<strong>on</strong>’t think you need a Ph.D. in<br />

Hum<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g> Resources to underst<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d<br />

that when your people feel valued<br />

Kelli Tix<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d respected for the work they<br />

do, they’re going to resp<strong>on</strong>d with<br />

dedicati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d loyalty to your shared<br />

missi<strong>on</strong>.<br />

“From day <strong>on</strong>e, that’s been our<br />

philosophy at Volk Packaging.<br />

Respecting <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d h<strong>on</strong>oring our people<br />

– while also having lots <strong>of</strong> fun – has<br />

really been the key to everything<br />

we’ve been able to accomplish.”<br />

R<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>dy Therieault <strong>on</strong> skis.<br />

At Volk Packaging, the signs <strong>of</strong> this<br />

creative approach to “HR” c<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

be seen everywhere. Drop by the<br />

comp<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>y’s spacious, brightly lit<br />

cafeteria, for example, <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d you’ll<br />

come across dozens <strong>of</strong> “Comp<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>y<br />

Record” plaques (awarded for<br />

productivity <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d <strong>on</strong>-the-job<br />

ingenuity) that glitter from the<br />

Another beloved traditi<strong>on</strong> at Volk<br />

Packaging is the “Associate <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Quarter” award, presented four<br />

times a year to <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g> associate who’s<br />

g<strong>on</strong>e “above <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d bey<strong>on</strong>d” the call<br />

<strong>of</strong> ordinary duty. And then there’s<br />

the “Five-Year Club Party,” held<br />

each year at the sumptuous local<br />

country club, where Volk associates<br />

are recognized by the Volks for<br />

their accomplishments during their<br />

tenure <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d presented with gifts in<br />

recogniti<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> each five-year period<br />

<strong>of</strong> service they’ve given to the<br />

comp<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>y.<br />

Put all <strong>of</strong> those enlightened features<br />

together, <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d it’s no surprise that<br />

Volk Packaging w<strong>on</strong> the first-ever<br />

“Maine Family Business <strong>of</strong> the Year<br />

Award” (in 2000) . . . after proudly<br />

dem<strong>on</strong>strating its b<strong>on</strong>a fides as a<br />

business envir<strong>on</strong>ment in which<br />

workers <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d their families c<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

thrive.<br />

Ping p<strong>on</strong>g men’s competiti<strong>on</strong>.<br />

Al<strong>on</strong>g with winning awards, however,<br />

the Volk approach to h<strong>on</strong>oring<br />

its workers just makes plain good<br />

business sense. As <strong>of</strong> 2011, for<br />

example, more th<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g> 78 percent <strong>of</strong><br />

the comp<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>y’s 75 associates have<br />

served with the comp<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>y for at least<br />

five years . . . with m<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>y having<br />

served 10, 20, 30 or even 40 years.<br />

Ask Douglas Volk how his comp<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>y<br />

m<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>ages to score so well at what<br />

used to be called “employee<br />

retenti<strong>on</strong>,” <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d he’ll give a lot <strong>of</strong> the<br />

credit to “creative thinking.” And<br />

no w<strong>on</strong>der: as the recent author <strong>of</strong><br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g> imaginative psychological thriller<br />

(The Morpheus C<strong>on</strong>spiracy, Gateway<br />

Press) himself, Volk says he learned<br />

a l<strong>on</strong>g time ago that creativity “isn’t<br />

just <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g> import<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>t ingredient for<br />

success in business <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d life – it’s<br />

absolutely essential.”<br />

Describing how creative thinking<br />

c<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g> make life better for everybody<br />

involved in a m<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>ufacturing<br />

enterprise, Volk points to the<br />

Are You Indispensable at<br />

Work?<br />

By Robert B. Tucker<br />

In a time <strong>of</strong> ec<strong>on</strong>omic<br />

disrupti<strong>on</strong>, unprecedented downsizings,<br />

budgetary cutbacks <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d the c<strong>on</strong>st<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>t<br />

pressure to outsource more <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d more<br />

routine functi<strong>on</strong>s (<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d the employees who<br />

perform them), advice <strong>on</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>essi<strong>on</strong>al<br />

survival always seems to c<strong>on</strong>vey the same<br />

tired message: Be visible. D<strong>on</strong>’t make<br />

enemies. Brown nose the boss. And work<br />

even harder.<br />

In reality, you are already working hard.<br />

Simply working harder will not be enough,<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d may lead to a burnout. Relying solely <strong>on</strong><br />

your functi<strong>on</strong>al skills <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d expertise will not<br />

be enough to make you difficult to replace.<br />

And your years <strong>of</strong> experience <strong>on</strong> the job may<br />

not have the cachet they <strong>on</strong>ce did either.<br />

The good news is there is something you c<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

do to take charge <strong>of</strong> your career if you’re<br />

willing to c<strong>on</strong>sider it. Based <strong>on</strong> research<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d interviews with 43 st<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>dout employees<br />

whom peers, bosses <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d colleagues identified<br />

as indispensable, I believe the <strong>on</strong>ly way<br />

to become more valuable to your<br />

org<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>izati<strong>on</strong>—<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d have incredible job<br />

satisfacti<strong>on</strong> in the process—is to focus <strong>on</strong><br />

mastering a new set <strong>of</strong> strategic skills.<br />

Help W<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>ted: I-Skills Required<br />

To help you succeed, you need to build <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d<br />

unleash a new set <strong>of</strong> skills in your work <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d<br />

in your life: Innovati<strong>on</strong> Skills, or I-Skills<br />

for short. While org<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>izati<strong>on</strong>s around the<br />

world are shedding jobs, they are suddenly,<br />

desperately in need <strong>of</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>essi<strong>on</strong>als with the<br />

abilities <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d skills to deliver unc<strong>on</strong>venti<strong>on</strong>al<br />

results: to slash costs without sacrificing<br />

service, to add unique value that keeps<br />

current customers loyal <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d helps close new<br />

business.<br />

Innovati<strong>on</strong> is about more th<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g> inventing<br />

new products <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d services. Today, it’s<br />

about figuring out how <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d where to add<br />

value where you are <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d where you work.<br />

Innovati<strong>on</strong> is the act <strong>of</strong> coming up with<br />

ideas <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d successfully bringing them to life<br />

to solve problems <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d create opportunities.<br />

It’s also about bringing your total self to<br />

the work you do—<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d thriving amidst the<br />

chaos <strong>of</strong> ch<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>ging times. As <strong>on</strong>e m<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>ager<br />

we interviewed in our research expressed it,<br />

“I’ve never felt such satisfacti<strong>on</strong> doing my<br />

work as I do now. I get to work with a really<br />

great team <strong>of</strong> people <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d I’m having the time<br />

<strong>of</strong> my life.”<br />

Based <strong>on</strong> 20 years experience as <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

innovati<strong>on</strong> c<strong>on</strong>sult<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>t <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d coach, <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d <strong>on</strong><br />

43 interviews for my new book, Innovati<strong>on</strong><br />

is Everybody’s Business, here are the seven<br />

fundamental I-Skills you need to master to<br />

make yourself indispensable in today’s hyper<br />

competitive world.<br />

1. You Embrace the Opportunity Mindset.<br />

Where others see problems, you see<br />

potential. When others bog down in endless<br />

details, you climb up to the ro<strong>of</strong> to see the<br />

big picture. In other words, you realize that<br />

perspective determines everything.<br />

My friend Mark S<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>born, motivati<strong>on</strong>al<br />

speaker <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d author <strong>of</strong> The Fred Factor,<br />

found he had a growing aversi<strong>on</strong> when<br />

the ph<strong>on</strong>e r<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>g. So he wrote the words<br />

“obligati<strong>on</strong> or opportunity?” <strong>on</strong> a Post-It<br />

note beside his ph<strong>on</strong>e. Every time he picks<br />

up the ph<strong>on</strong>e, he does so with <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g> attitude <strong>of</strong><br />

service, gratitude <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d positive expect<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>cy.<br />

To shift perspective, challenge yourself to<br />

come up with soluti<strong>on</strong>s, see the big picture,<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d unleash creativity, ask yourself: what<br />

are 10 ways to address this problem? Or:<br />

what are 10 things that are working well in<br />

my department right now?<br />

2. You are Adept at Assaulting Assumpti<strong>on</strong>s.<br />

Ever overheard yourself utter the words<br />

“there’s got to be a better way”? If so, you<br />

have challenged the belief that the status<br />

quo is the best or the <strong>on</strong>ly way - <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d you<br />

invited new thinking. Innovators challenge<br />

pers<strong>on</strong>al, pr<strong>of</strong>essi<strong>on</strong>al <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d industry<br />

c<strong>on</strong>tinued <strong>on</strong> page 15<br />

“ Innovati<strong>on</strong> is the<br />

act <strong>of</strong> coming<br />

up with ideas<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d successfully<br />

bringing them<br />

to life to solve<br />

problems<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d create<br />

opportunities.<br />

5. You C<strong>on</strong>tinuously Fortify Your<br />

Everybody has ideas, but <strong>on</strong>ly a<br />

factories” fortified to churn out a<br />

wealth <strong>of</strong> them <strong>on</strong> a c<strong>on</strong>sistent basis,<br />

when <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d where needed. Here are<br />

some suggesti<strong>on</strong>s.<br />

Enh<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>ce your creative envir<strong>on</strong>ment.<br />

Turn your <strong>of</strong>fice into a creative place<br />

to brainstorm ideas. Or, find your<br />

inspirati<strong>on</strong> outside the <strong>of</strong>fice.<br />

Know when to unitask. People think<br />

they’re more productive when they<br />

are working <strong>on</strong> multiple tasks at<br />

<strong>on</strong>ce, but research shows otherwise.<br />

Michel<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>gelo didn’t multitask when<br />

he was in full creative mode. Neither<br />

should you.<br />

Practice creativity. It’s not a gift<br />

from the gods, but the result <strong>of</strong><br />

preparati<strong>on</strong>, routine, discipline.<br />

Get in the habit <strong>of</strong> downloading your<br />

ideas. If you d<strong>on</strong>’t capture them the<br />

minute the strike, you’re unlikely<br />

to act <strong>on</strong> them later. The mind is<br />

terrific for coming up with ideas but<br />

is <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g> equally terrible storage device.<br />

6. You Are C<strong>on</strong>sidered a St<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>dout<br />

Collaborator.<br />

If you are a genius in your area <strong>of</strong><br />

expertise, but your collaborati<strong>on</strong><br />

skills are lacking, you’ll never<br />

achieve your potential, <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d you’ll<br />

never become indispensable. To<br />

collaborate is “to work together,<br />

especially in a joint intellectual<br />

effort.” Collaborative teams are how<br />

big projects actually get d<strong>on</strong>e.<br />

7. You are Adept at Building the<br />

Buy-in.<br />

Selling new ideas has always been<br />

about surmounting obstacles,<br />

overcoming objecti<strong>on</strong>s <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d gaining<br />

commitment for ch<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>ge. How do you<br />

accomplish this? Isolate the benefits<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d solicit feedback from friends,<br />

mentors <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d others you trust.<br />

Then, think about the innovati<strong>on</strong><br />

style <strong>of</strong> the pers<strong>on</strong> or pers<strong>on</strong>s you’ll<br />

be presenting your ideas to. For<br />

inst<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>ce, if your audience is more<br />

“big picture” oriented, d<strong>on</strong>’t bog<br />

them down with details. Use their<br />

hot butt<strong>on</strong> words. Innovators use<br />

familiar l<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>guage.<br />

Be persistent. The 3M team<br />

resp<strong>on</strong>sible for launching Post-It<br />

Notes was growing desperate. Senior<br />

M<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>agement was threatening to kill<br />

the product as a loser. Nobody was<br />

buying it. Then, individuals took<br />

suitcases <strong>of</strong> the little stocky pads <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d<br />

h<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>ded them out to passersby’s in<br />

the city <strong>of</strong> Richm<strong>on</strong>d, Virginia. That<br />

was the turning point. People started<br />

sticking them everywhere <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d beg<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

asking for them at retail stores. The<br />

new product took <strong>of</strong>f like a rocket.<br />

Summary<br />

Innovati<strong>on</strong> is everybody’s business<br />

who w<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>ts to thrive <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d prosper<br />

in a time when the ec<strong>on</strong>omy is in<br />

such flux. Start thinking about these<br />

skills as they relate to your job, the<br />

projects you are completing right<br />

now, <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d the initiatives you w<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>t<br />

to suggest should be next <strong>on</strong> the<br />

agenda. Master the mindset, skillset<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d toolset <strong>of</strong> the innovator, <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d<br />

so<strong>on</strong> your reputati<strong>on</strong> for results will<br />

Folding–R<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>domness<br />

C<strong>on</strong>trolled<br />

By Mehdi Bahrami<br />

The m<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>ufacturer’s gap c<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

make the difference between happy<br />

customers whose case erecting<br />

equipment never jams, <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d those<br />

whose complaints <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d returned<br />

orders eventually lead to lost<br />

business for the box supplier.<br />

The Problem<br />

Very few box makers would argue<br />

that the two boxes shown in Figure<br />

1 are fine to send to customers<br />

– what is amazing is that both <strong>of</strong><br />

these boxes are from the same<br />

order.<br />

Figure 1. Gaps nearly closed (top) <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d gaps<br />

over 1/2” exposing glue (bottom).<br />

There is large variability in the<br />

folding process <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d m<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>y variables<br />

influence the gap. These include<br />

paper type <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d weight, board<br />

type, score depth <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d pr<strong>of</strong>ile, box<br />

dimensi<strong>on</strong>s (eg., flap dimensi<strong>on</strong>s<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d body depth), board moisture<br />

c<strong>on</strong>tent <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d temperature, pr<strong>of</strong>ile <strong>of</strong><br />

the folding rails <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d length <strong>of</strong> the<br />

folding secti<strong>on</strong>, type <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d pr<strong>of</strong>ile <strong>of</strong><br />

the counter-ejector, <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d machine<br />

speed. Highly recycled light-weight<br />

paper c<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g> make for the least<br />

c<strong>on</strong>trollable fold, especially when<br />

used to make a l<strong>on</strong>g <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d wide box <strong>of</strong><br />

little depth. Additi<strong>on</strong>ally, the board<br />

warp c<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g> ch<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>ge throughout the<br />

run, compounding the problem.<br />

Furthermore, there are <strong>on</strong>ly a few<br />

tools available to a box maker for<br />

c<strong>on</strong>trolling the gap variati<strong>on</strong>:<br />

• Score pr<strong>of</strong>ile used <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d the<br />

pressure behind it during<br />

the run<br />

• Folding rail adjustments<br />

• Feeder guides adjustments<br />

• Folding swords quality<br />

Gap Distributi<strong>on</strong> Explained<br />

On <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>y particular box order, the<br />

m<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>ufacturer’s gaps are <strong>of</strong> course<br />

not all the same dimensi<strong>on</strong>, but<br />

c<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g> generally be characterized by a<br />

normal distributi<strong>on</strong> as show below<br />

from a sample order from a 37”<br />

flexo-folder-gluer:<br />

The statistical parameters <strong>on</strong><br />

gaps such as the me<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>, st<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>dard<br />

deviati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d vari<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>ce are all<br />

dictated by the variables menti<strong>on</strong>ed<br />

in the introducti<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> this article.<br />

However, there are indeed certain<br />

parameters within the operator’s<br />

grasp that c<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g> be used to ch<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>ge<br />

the distributi<strong>on</strong> by shifting the<br />

me<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d tightening up the<br />

vari<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>ce.<br />

So What C<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g> a Box Maker Do?<br />

One strategy is to maximize<br />

the room for error. Box makers<br />

comm<strong>on</strong>ly use 3/8” +/- 1/8” as<br />

their toler<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>ce specificati<strong>on</strong> for the<br />

m<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>ufacturer’s gap. As shown in<br />

Figure 2, the closer the gap is kept<br />

to the 3/8” target throughout the<br />

run, the fewer the number <strong>of</strong> boxes<br />

that end up being outside <strong>of</strong> the 1/4”<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d 1/2” limits. Operators typically<br />

d<strong>on</strong>’t have the tools needed to track<br />

such variables. Using intuiti<strong>on</strong><br />

works better for some operators<br />

th<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g> others. However, intuiti<strong>on</strong><br />

Real Examples<br />

Shown in Figure 3(a) is data from<br />

a typical RSC medium-weight<br />

liner single-wall order where the<br />

distributi<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> the m<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>ufacturer’s<br />

gap is not widely varied. As the<br />

order was originally run, 83 boxes<br />

out <strong>of</strong> the 8319 boxes fell outside<br />

the 1/4” – 1/2” gap toler<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>ce, a<br />

defect rate <strong>of</strong> 1.00%. The average<br />

gap in the run is found to be around<br />

0.42”. Figure 3(b) shows how the<br />

result would have been different<br />

with <strong>on</strong>ly 29 defects if the average<br />

m<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>ufacturer’s gap was kept close<br />

to 3/8”, a defect rate <strong>of</strong> 0.35%.<br />

Figure 3. An 8319 RSC box medium-weight<br />

single-wall order (a) as it actually was run with<br />

1.00% defect rate (b) with average gap kept<br />

close to 3/8” target with 0.35% defect rate.<br />

Next, Figure 4(a) shows data from<br />

a RSC light-weight liner single-wall<br />

order with small box depth where<br />

the resulting m<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>ufacturer’s gap<br />

was not well c<strong>on</strong>trolled. As the<br />

order was originally run, a shocking<br />

1344 boxes out <strong>of</strong> the 4805 boxes<br />

r<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g> fell outside the 1/4” – 1/2” gap<br />

toler<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>ce, a defect rate <strong>of</strong> 28.0%.<br />

The average gap in the run is found<br />

to be around 0.29”. If necessary<br />

ch<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>ges were made to move this<br />

average gap up closer to the target<br />

<strong>of</strong> 3/8”, Figure 4(b) shows how <strong>on</strong>ly<br />

308 defects would have resulted at a<br />

defect rate <strong>of</strong> 6.4%.<br />

Figure 4. A 4805 box RSC light-weight liner<br />

single-wall order with small box depth (a) as it<br />

actually was run with 28.0% defect rate (b) with<br />

average gap kept close to 3/8” target with 6.4%<br />

defect rate.<br />

Finally, Figure 5 investigates <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

order where the board stock warp<br />

ch<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>ged midway through the order.<br />

As originally r<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>, the 8283 box<br />

order ended up with 1127 defective<br />

boxes, a defect rate <strong>of</strong> 13.6%.<br />

This was primarily because <strong>of</strong> a<br />

distinct increase in the size <strong>of</strong> the<br />

m<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>ufacturer’s gap that occurred<br />

1580 boxes into the order. The<br />

increase was due to a ch<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>ge in<br />

the warp <strong>of</strong> the incoming board<br />

stock. Figure 5(b) shows how if the<br />

average gap was then reduced to<br />

stay in line with the 3/8” target, the<br />

order could have been completed<br />

with a defect rate <strong>of</strong> 4.18%.<br />

Figure 5. A 8283 box order with warp ch<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>ge<br />

mid order (a) as it actually was run with 13.6%<br />

defect rate (b) with average gap kept close to<br />

3/8” target throughout run with 4.18% defect<br />

rate.<br />

Solving the Problem<br />

Practically<br />

C<strong>on</strong>trolling r<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>domness is not a<br />

new c<strong>on</strong>cept: m<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>y processes are<br />

variable <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d m<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>y industries use<br />

SPC c<strong>on</strong>trol to m<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>age variability<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d use data to decide <strong>on</strong> target<br />

shifts. However, c<strong>on</strong>trolling<br />

r<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>domness is a new c<strong>on</strong>cept<br />

to most box makers because<br />

they never had access to tools to<br />

measure variability. However, that<br />

Working Towards A Total<br />

<strong>Sales</strong> Compensati<strong>on</strong> Pl<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

By George A. Moretti<br />

Building a comprehensive<br />

Compensati<strong>on</strong> Pl<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g> is not<br />

easy. The most import<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>t thing to<br />

remember when creating <strong>on</strong>e is, as<br />

always, Start With The End in Mind!<br />

What outcome do you hope to<br />

achieve with the compensati<strong>on</strong> pl<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

you are <strong>of</strong>fering?<br />

I would like to suggest a pl<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g> that<br />

includes three comp<strong>on</strong>ents:<br />

• Base Salary = calculated <strong>on</strong><br />

sales, msf or <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>y other historical<br />

values your comp<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>y has used<br />

• Commissi<strong>on</strong> = calculated <strong>on</strong><br />

sales dollars, c<strong>on</strong>tributi<strong>on</strong> dollars,<br />

margin dollars, msf or pr<strong>of</strong>it.<br />

• Focused <strong>Sales</strong> Objectives =<br />

this is where you pay for certain<br />

services provided that are in<br />

alignment with your goals <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d<br />

objectives no matter what they<br />

are. These sales objectives do not<br />

last forever but are established<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d paid out until the goal or<br />

objective is obtained.<br />

Because <strong>of</strong> the space limitati<strong>on</strong>s <strong>of</strong><br />

this article, I am going to look at the<br />

third comp<strong>on</strong>ent <strong>on</strong>ly, The Focused<br />

<strong>Sales</strong> Objective.<br />

This piece <strong>of</strong> the puzzle is <strong>of</strong>ten<br />

the <strong>on</strong>e most <strong>of</strong>ten overlooked yet<br />

it c<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g> prove to be the comp<strong>on</strong>ent<br />

<strong>of</strong> compensati<strong>on</strong> that c<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g> bring the<br />

greatest return.<br />

To implement this compensati<strong>on</strong><br />

strategy effectively, it must be tied<br />

to specific comp<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>y objectives.<br />

For inst<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>ce – In order to speed up<br />

payback <strong>on</strong> a new piece <strong>of</strong> equipment<br />

you might choose to incentivize new<br />

sales run <strong>on</strong> this machine at a rate <strong>of</strong><br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g> additi<strong>on</strong>al 2% for a period <strong>of</strong><br />

12 m<strong>on</strong>ths.<br />

Illustrati<strong>on</strong>: New sales (from existing<br />

accounts as well as new business)<br />

brought in by sales pers<strong>on</strong>, Cindy,<br />

run <strong>on</strong> the new Bobst: Total –<br />

$300,000. 2% commissi<strong>on</strong> = $6000<br />

paid out for 1 year <strong>on</strong>ly.<br />

The total sales compensati<strong>on</strong><br />

increases – as it should – for<br />

rewarding the “services provided”,<br />

which is selling new business for the<br />

new machine!<br />

Or perhaps you would simply like to<br />

incentivize sales reps to open new<br />

Perhaps you would like to increase<br />

Objective compensati<strong>on</strong> pl<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g> may be<br />

just the right way to help your sales<br />

team work in the right directi<strong>on</strong>.<br />

In short, this comp<strong>on</strong>ent <strong>of</strong> a<br />

comprehensive compensati<strong>on</strong> pl<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

c<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g> be used toward <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>y specific goal<br />

you wish to focus <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d c<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g> be as<br />

flexible as you think is appropriate.<br />

It should be aimed with laser like<br />

intensity at a clarified goal <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d<br />

should last for <strong>on</strong>ly a specific time.<br />

It needs to be explained thoroughly<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d must be attainable in order for<br />

it to be rewarding, motivating <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d<br />

org<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>izati<strong>on</strong>ally productive.<br />

In summary, here are some general<br />

thoughts:<br />

Figure out the going rate <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d type<br />

<strong>of</strong> commissi<strong>on</strong>s for salespeople in<br />

your industry. Our industry has been<br />

traditi<strong>on</strong>ally difficult getting good<br />

data but fortunately as <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g> AICC<br />

member the AICC has a NEW 2009<br />

• Set your commissi<strong>on</strong> rates<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d Focused <strong>Sales</strong> Objectives<br />

payouts at a level that both<br />

attracts <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d retains good<br />

employees. You may have some<br />

informati<strong>on</strong> from past sales<br />

interviews with sales people in<br />

your market. Ask your sales<br />

people what the competiti<strong>on</strong> is<br />

paying out. (This should be <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

interesting exercise for m<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>y<br />

reas<strong>on</strong>s) Set the rates <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d payout<br />

percentages at the time <strong>of</strong> hiring a<br />

new sales pers<strong>on</strong> or at the time <strong>of</strong><br />

launching a new sales pl<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>.<br />

• Review your pl<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g> status <strong>on</strong> a<br />

m<strong>on</strong>thly / Quarterly basis. Set the<br />

meetings up for the next 12<br />

m<strong>on</strong>ths.<br />

• Always ask: Do my sales<br />

people know where they st<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d?<br />

They should know how they get<br />

paid <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d how much they will make<br />

every pay period. Chart the sales<br />

perform<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>ce to the pay or total<br />

compensati<strong>on</strong> you are currently<br />

paying.<br />

• Do you have m<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>agement<br />

buy in to your pl<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>? Are the<br />

owners or stakeholders OK with<br />

the level <strong>of</strong> compensati<strong>on</strong> your<br />

sales people will make?<br />

• Do the numbers make<br />

sense? If you were hiring a new<br />

sales pers<strong>on</strong> would you put them<br />

<strong>on</strong> your current pl<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>? If the<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>swer is no then ask yourself why<br />

not.<br />

I would like to suggest that as<br />

l<strong>on</strong>g as you clearly define what<br />

you w<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>t, you c<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g> then align your<br />

compensati<strong>on</strong> pl<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>. It should focus<br />

<strong>on</strong> the activities that will generate<br />

the behavior needed to obtain the<br />

goals <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d objectives that will get you<br />

to where you w<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>t to go. You then<br />

will have the right compensati<strong>on</strong><br />

pl<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g> for the time being; that is until<br />

you ch<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>ge your targets, visi<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d<br />

7 Steps to Hiring the<br />

Right <strong>Sales</strong> People<br />

By Greg Cleary<br />

It may be the 21st Century,<br />

but thous<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>ds <strong>of</strong> employers still hire<br />

new sales staff the same way kids<br />

pick out doughnuts at the bakery – if<br />

it looks good, just give it a try. After<br />

all, our gut instinct is very reliable<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d will never lead us into the weeds,<br />

right? Guess again. One out <strong>of</strong> three<br />

applic<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>ts puts false informati<strong>on</strong> <strong>on</strong><br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g> applicati<strong>on</strong>; <strong>on</strong>e in twenty tries to<br />

hide a c<strong>on</strong>victi<strong>on</strong> with a fake name,<br />

SSN, or driver’s license number; <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d<br />

the average cost <strong>of</strong> hiring a scam<br />

artist is a bit north <strong>of</strong> $100K.<br />

Your sales team is the lifeblood <strong>of</strong><br />

your comp<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>y <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d the driving force<br />

behind healthy top line revenues.<br />

You wouldn’t h<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d a sack <strong>of</strong> hundred<br />

dollar bills to some shmoe you just<br />

met, <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d you shouldn’t trust <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

import<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>t piece <strong>of</strong> your comp<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>y to<br />

a smiling face in a suit that might be<br />

doing his best sales job <strong>on</strong> you. Due<br />

diligence is the name <strong>of</strong> the game.<br />

You c<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g> trust the future <strong>of</strong> your<br />

comp<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>y to your amazing ability to<br />

peg people with a look in the <str<strong>on</strong>g>eye</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d<br />

a h<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>dshake, or you might w<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>t to<br />

try this 7-Step Hiring Pl<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g> developed<br />

by Acti<strong>on</strong> Learning Corporati<strong>on</strong>.<br />

1.) Run <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g> ad for your sales<br />

positi<strong>on</strong>. Make sure the job<br />

descripti<strong>on</strong> is well crafted <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d<br />

that your requirements are very<br />

specific. This will save you a lot <strong>of</strong><br />

time screening a pile <strong>of</strong> applicati<strong>on</strong>s<br />

that just d<strong>on</strong>’t fit the bill. In this<br />

job market, every posting is likely<br />

to pull in dozens or even hundreds<br />

<strong>of</strong> applicati<strong>on</strong>s. The big <strong>on</strong>line sites<br />

like M<strong>on</strong>ster generally have very good<br />

templates to guide you in making<br />

your ad complete <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d well-focused.<br />

Tip: Be wary <strong>of</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>y applicati<strong>on</strong> that<br />

c<strong>on</strong>forms too precisely to every detail<br />

you’re asking for.<br />

2.) Have the <strong>Sales</strong> M<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>ager ph<strong>on</strong>e<br />

the top prospects. Teleph<strong>on</strong>e<br />

screening will keep you from<br />

wasting time with too m<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>y pers<strong>on</strong>al<br />

interviews. THIS is a good time to<br />

use your great “people instincts”<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d try to pick out a few real gems<br />

to bring in for <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g> interview. Have a<br />

few specific questi<strong>on</strong>s prepared for<br />

the ph<strong>on</strong>e call, using some industry<br />

jarg<strong>on</strong> to get a feel for the applic<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>t’s<br />

true knowledge <strong>of</strong> your product or<br />

service.<br />

3.) Bring the best c<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>didates in for<br />

pers<strong>on</strong>al interviews. Try to have<br />

<strong>on</strong>e <strong>of</strong> your two top sales pr<strong>of</strong>essi<strong>on</strong>al<br />

or m<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>agers hold the first interview,<br />

which should be limited to 30<br />

minutes or so. Never hire <strong>on</strong> the<br />

spot, <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d never hire <strong>on</strong> the judgment<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>on</strong>e interviewer al<strong>on</strong>e. Use a<br />

scorecard to rate the pers<strong>on</strong> <strong>on</strong> a<br />

scale <strong>of</strong> 1 to 5 in several specific<br />

areas <strong>of</strong> your impressi<strong>on</strong>s, their<br />

experience, <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d the sales qualities<br />

you’re looking for.<br />

4.) If they cut the mustard, send<br />

them <strong>on</strong> to the next step. If you<br />

have <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>on</strong>line or paper survey or<br />

some kind <strong>of</strong> test <strong>of</strong> their ability <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d<br />

suitability, have them take that right<br />

away, <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d for sure before the sec<strong>on</strong>d<br />

interview. If you d<strong>on</strong>’t have <strong>on</strong>e,<br />

make <strong>on</strong>e. It makes you look more<br />

pr<strong>of</strong>essi<strong>on</strong>al <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d gives you <strong>on</strong>e more<br />

way to make sure they are for real.<br />

Check to see that their results mesh<br />

with the experience <strong>on</strong> their résumé.<br />

If they have the right stuff, schedule<br />

a sec<strong>on</strong>d interview.<br />

5.) The sec<strong>on</strong>d interviewer should<br />

be <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>other top sales executive, <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d<br />

he shouldn’t see the first scorecard<br />

before the interview. He will know<br />

that the c<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>didate is a top c<strong>on</strong>tender<br />

by the fact that he or she made it to<br />

this point in the process, but should<br />

do his own scorecard. At least some<br />

<strong>of</strong> the interview questi<strong>on</strong>s should be<br />

prepared <strong>on</strong> a form where you c<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

track <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d rate resp<strong>on</strong>ses, <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d the<br />

questi<strong>on</strong>s should be more subjective,<br />

regarding such things as being a team<br />

player <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d how they would h<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>dle<br />

certain situati<strong>on</strong>s.<br />

6.) The two interviewers should sit<br />

down <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d compare notes, discuss<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d decide. If there are major<br />

discrep<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>cies between the way the<br />

two sales pros viewed the applic<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>t,<br />

that should be seen as a red flag. If<br />

the decisi<strong>on</strong> is made to proceed, it’s<br />

time to let the pr<strong>of</strong>essi<strong>on</strong>als do a real<br />

background check. There are a lot<br />

<strong>of</strong> good comp<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>ies that will check<br />

employment <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d pers<strong>on</strong>al references,<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d it’s worth the investment. It<br />

is a good idea to do searches for<br />

criminal records, sex <strong>of</strong>fenders, DMV,<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d so forth. A lot <strong>of</strong> good people<br />

have credit blemishes these days,<br />

but that’s something you c<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g> use if<br />

you wish to. Just remember that<br />

if you check criminal history <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d<br />

so forth for <strong>on</strong>e pers<strong>on</strong>, you have<br />

Virtualizati<strong>on</strong>: What is it all about,<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d how is it a no-brainer for<br />

my small to medium-size business?<br />

By Marc Schwartz<br />

Ask <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>y technology pers<strong>on</strong> about<br />

virtualizati<strong>on</strong> these days, <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d he or she will<br />

tell you it’s a must-have for <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>y business<br />

with more th<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>on</strong>e server. It’s even<br />

worth c<strong>on</strong>sidering for new single server<br />

installati<strong>on</strong>s. But ask business owners the<br />

same questi<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d they probably d<strong>on</strong>’t<br />

know what it is or why it is import<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>t to<br />

their business.<br />

Virtualizati<strong>on</strong> is a cost-saving measure<br />

whereby <strong>on</strong>e physical server runs <strong>on</strong>e or<br />

more “guest” servers. It’s much like a TV<br />

where you c<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g> watch multiple ch<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>nels<br />

at the same time. With virtualizati<strong>on</strong>, <strong>on</strong>e<br />

server c<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g> run multiple other servers at<br />

the same time. Virtualizati<strong>on</strong> is a generic<br />

term for a number <strong>of</strong> products that are<br />

available today; just like m<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>y TV makers<br />

provide picture-in-picture technology, so<br />

too m<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>y vendors <strong>of</strong>fer a virtualizati<strong>on</strong><br />

soluti<strong>on</strong>. VMWare, Micros<strong>of</strong>t, <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d Citrix are<br />

the three with the largest market share. For<br />

small businesses there are a few opti<strong>on</strong>s<br />

that are either free or at least less th<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g> you<br />

would have spent without virtualizati<strong>on</strong>.<br />

The innovati<strong>on</strong> behind virtualizati<strong>on</strong> is<br />

that the various comp<strong>on</strong>ents <strong>of</strong> a server<br />

no l<strong>on</strong>ger have to be purchased for each<br />

server you own. It’s always made sense,<br />

for example, to have a redund<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>t power<br />

supply in case <strong>of</strong> a failure, but why have<br />

10 servers each with redund<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>t power<br />

supplies? Virtualizati<strong>on</strong> me<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>s that power<br />

supplies, processors, memory, drives, etc,<br />

are shared by every virtual server running<br />

<strong>on</strong> the same physical server. Naturally<br />

this sharing equates to cost savings. The<br />

c<strong>on</strong>servative estimate <strong>of</strong> the savings is 50%<br />

<strong>on</strong> computer hardware.<br />

However, saving <strong>on</strong> hardware is just the<br />

tip <strong>of</strong> the iceberg in terms <strong>of</strong> the benefits<br />

<strong>of</strong> virtualizati<strong>on</strong>. Virtualizati<strong>on</strong> is also<br />

a superior method for m<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>aging your<br />

servers. Virtualizati<strong>on</strong> makes backups <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d<br />

restorati<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> entire servers better, faster,<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d more reliable. It makes the possibility<br />

<strong>of</strong> upgrades or migrati<strong>on</strong>s infinitely easier.<br />

M<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>y business owners are familiar with<br />

the cost <strong>of</strong> purchasing a server, for most <strong>of</strong><br />

the audience here, owners have probably<br />

spent $5,000-$12,000 for the servers that<br />

run their business. But the cost <strong>of</strong> a server<br />

should not be measured by the initial<br />

hardware investment. The real cost <strong>of</strong> a<br />

server includes electricity, air c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>ing,<br />

battery backup, backup services, <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>tivirus,<br />

disaster recovery, installati<strong>on</strong> labor,<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d system administrati<strong>on</strong>. The cost <strong>of</strong><br />

these additi<strong>on</strong>al comp<strong>on</strong>ents to owning<br />

a server far surpass the initial hardware<br />

investment. Virtualizati<strong>on</strong> makes each <strong>of</strong><br />

these additi<strong>on</strong>al comp<strong>on</strong>ents much lower<br />

cost as well. In the IT industry looking at<br />

the whole picture <strong>of</strong> hardware <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d related<br />

expenses is referred to as “TCO” – Total<br />

Cost <strong>of</strong> Ownership. And it is undisputed in<br />

the IT industry that virtualizati<strong>on</strong> radically<br />

decreases the TCO for <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>y business with<br />

more th<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>on</strong>e server.<br />

Yes, there are a few limitati<strong>on</strong>s to<br />

virtualizati<strong>on</strong>. Servers that are especially<br />

processor intensive may not be ideal<br />

for virtualizati<strong>on</strong>. Servers that require<br />

proprietary hardware such as customized<br />

fax boards, or cad/cam systems that<br />

interface to producti<strong>on</strong> equipment may<br />

not be a good choice for virtualizati<strong>on</strong>.<br />

c<strong>on</strong>tinued <strong>on</strong> page 38<br />

“ There are major<br />

forces which have<br />

shifted the center<br />

Virtualizati<strong>on</strong> – What is it all about, <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d how is it a no-brainer for my small to<br />

medium-size business?<br />

c<strong>on</strong>tinued from page 37<br />

Finally, the people who maintain<br />

the virtualizing server need to be<br />

trained to do it correctly. For most<br />

small businesses, though, these<br />

c<strong>on</strong>cerns are not costly <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d are very<br />

narrow in scope.<br />

Some customers have asked<br />

us whether virtualizati<strong>on</strong> will<br />

work with their s<strong>of</strong>tware, but<br />

virtualizati<strong>on</strong> isn’t s<strong>of</strong>tware<br />

dependent. All <strong>of</strong> the s<strong>of</strong>tware<br />

vendors that serve the corrugated<br />

packaging industry have customers<br />

with virtualized servers. What<br />

does not work for our corrugated<br />

38 bOXSCORE<br />

customers is when servers are<br />

dependent <strong>on</strong> specific hardware<br />

such as cutting tables or machine<br />

center PC’s with cards that interface<br />

with the m<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>ufacturing equipment.<br />

What’s more, because your missi<strong>on</strong><br />

critical servers c<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g> be virtualized,<br />

they c<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g> also be protected against<br />

systems failures in ways that are<br />

vastly more cost effective th<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g> they<br />

could have just a few years ago.<br />

To sum it up, virtualizati<strong>on</strong><br />

saves you m<strong>on</strong>ey <strong>on</strong> computer<br />

hardware <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d s<strong>of</strong>tware. Even more<br />

import<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>tly, it provides more<br />

security, flexibility, <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d exp<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>si<strong>on</strong><br />

opti<strong>on</strong>s th<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g> ever before. So it’s<br />

really not a questi<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> why a small<br />

business owner would virtualize.<br />

Rather, the questi<strong>on</strong> is why that<br />

owner hasn’t d<strong>on</strong>e so yet. <br />

Ch<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>ging Nature <strong>of</strong><br />

Domestic C<strong>on</strong>tainerboard–<br />

Part 3<br />

By Ralph Young, AICC Technical Director<br />

In the November/December<br />

issue we beg<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g> to investigate<br />

the ch<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>ges to our paper supply<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d how it has ch<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>ged over the<br />

years. While the “Lightweight<br />

is history, it is still available to<br />

the over 600 who participated<br />

as a download <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d available to<br />

those who did not register from<br />

the AICC resource store. The full<br />

written research report will so<strong>on</strong><br />

be available through the AICC.<br />

This document will be a much<br />

more comprehensive look at the<br />

equipment ch<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>ges corrugators <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d<br />

c<strong>on</strong>verters will need to embrace<br />

to utilize emerging lightweight<br />

products. It was also look at<br />

technology upgrades in stock<br />

preparati<strong>on</strong> systems that paper<br />

mills, dependent <strong>on</strong> recovered<br />

fibre as raw materials, will need to<br />

embrace to keep up with the ever<br />

ch<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>ging <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d maybe deteriorating<br />

quality <strong>of</strong> fibre here in North<br />

America.<br />

At least <strong>on</strong>e additi<strong>on</strong>al webinar<br />

is pl<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>ned for the spring that will<br />

address some <strong>of</strong> the above issues.<br />

Bey<strong>on</strong>d this sec<strong>on</strong>d seminar is The<br />

Science <strong>of</strong> Paper at the Kapst<strong>on</strong>e<br />

virgin fibre mill in Charlest<strong>on</strong>,<br />

SC. While this is certainly not the<br />

first c<strong>on</strong>ference <strong>on</strong> c<strong>on</strong>tainerboard<br />

m<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>ufacturing this <strong>on</strong>e is exp<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>ded<br />

c<strong>on</strong>tainerboards developed from<br />

new <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d sec<strong>on</strong>dary fibres.<br />

While we do not have a totally clear<br />

picture <strong>of</strong> the physical properties<br />

that need to be engineered into<br />

these future grades, it is becoming<br />

clear that how we judged <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d valued<br />

c<strong>on</strong>tainerboard in the past will not<br />

suffice in the future. It is by looking<br />

at the characteristics at how super<br />

lightweights are sold <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d marketed<br />

around the world that new criteria<br />

will be established. Leaving basis<br />

weight <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d Ring Crush/STFI behind<br />

we may likely be determining<br />

new world out there for us.<br />

These new c<strong>on</strong>tainerboard will not<br />

likely be used in brown industrial<br />

corrugated shipping c<strong>on</strong>tainers, but<br />

in B/E double wall, micro flutes, <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d<br />

retail <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d shelf ready packaging.<br />

We are morphing toward <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d will<br />

likely be combining with folding<br />

cart<strong>on</strong> applicati<strong>on</strong>s in certain<br />

designs <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d structures. We will<br />

also probably be leaving the world<br />

<strong>of</strong> ECT behind <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d moving directly<br />

was in Europe fifteen years ago.<br />

Available supplies <strong>of</strong> these 20#<br />

prepare recovered fibres for<br />

rem<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>ufacturing into linerboards<br />

introducti<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> foreign fibres<br />

Negotiati<strong>on</strong>: Dealing With<br />

Pressure<br />

By Mark Neely<br />

I’ve been teaching Negotiati<strong>on</strong> skills<br />

for over 20 years. I worked for the negotiati<strong>on</strong>s<br />

guru, Chet Karras, delivering something<br />

like 300 <strong>of</strong> his seminars from 1990<br />

to 1998. Since then, as President <strong>of</strong> Mark<br />

Neely Seminars, I have c<strong>on</strong>tinued to search<br />

for ways to help people to increase their negotiating<br />

capabilities. The most interesting<br />

thing I’ve discovered is that under pressure<br />

we are all capable <strong>of</strong> caving in too quickly<br />

or failing to take adv<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>tage <strong>of</strong> the power we<br />

have. Theoretically, there are some really<br />

good reas<strong>on</strong>s why this c<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g> happen. Practically,<br />

though, it’s extremely hard to avoid<br />

screwing up under pressure. In short, pressure<br />

makes us less effective as presenters<br />

<strong>of</strong> informati<strong>on</strong>, as listeners, <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d as problem<br />

solvers. It also lowers our aspirati<strong>on</strong>s<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d inhibits our willingness to take risk.<br />

Most signific<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>tly, though, it diminishes<br />

our perceptual capabilities <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d leads us to<br />

greater self-focus. Most <strong>of</strong> us simply d<strong>on</strong>’t<br />

see, underst<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d, speak, or think at our best<br />

when we are under pressure.<br />

So, how do you get to the point where you<br />

c<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g> trust yourself to negotiate at your best<br />

under pressure? There is no single <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>swer<br />

but here are a few suggesti<strong>on</strong>s:<br />

• Preparati<strong>on</strong> is the key: Before you<br />

step into the negotiati<strong>on</strong> be clear<br />

about the outcome you w<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>t to<br />

reach. Also, going in, be prepared to<br />

leave without a deal if that is a preferable<br />

outcome to the <strong>on</strong>e the other<br />

party ends up <strong>of</strong>fering.<br />

• Know yourself: What do you do<br />

when you get scared or <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>gry? What<br />

does your voice sound like? Which<br />

muscles do you tense up? If you<br />

d<strong>on</strong>’t know, ask some<strong>on</strong>e who loves<br />

you <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d has had the opportunity to<br />

argue with you. He/she will know.*<br />

Underst<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d that when you show fear<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d/or <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>ger the other party is likely<br />

to interpret your behavior as weakness.<br />

If they do, they may become<br />

more aggressive in their dem<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>ds or<br />

they c<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g> become defensive <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d resist<br />

you with greater effort.<br />

• D<strong>on</strong>’t be inflexible. Prioritize your<br />

dem<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>ds. Know what you c<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g> afford<br />

to give up. Know what you c<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>’t.<br />

D<strong>on</strong>’t forget to ask for something in<br />

return for the c<strong>on</strong>cessi<strong>on</strong>s you are<br />

willing to give up.<br />

• Underst<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d that you are not the<br />

<strong>on</strong>ly <strong>on</strong>e in the room who is feeling<br />

pressure. The other party may<br />

not be showing it but there is a high<br />

probability that if you are feeling<br />

pressure, the other party is also feeling<br />

pressure. Try to remember that<br />

the other party’s pressure is a big<br />

part <strong>of</strong> your power.<br />

There is no magic poti<strong>on</strong>, unequivocal<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>swer or fool-pro<strong>of</strong> process that will guar<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>tee<br />

negotiating success. Be h<strong>on</strong>est with<br />

yourself, know your limits <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d trust your<br />

strengths. Practice, read, ask for help, share<br />

what you learn <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d keep reaching for the<br />

next level <strong>of</strong> expertise.<br />

*I would suggest that you d<strong>on</strong>’t ask when<br />

you are scared or <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>gry. <br />

“ In short, pressure<br />

makes us less<br />

effective as<br />

presenters <strong>of</strong><br />

informati<strong>on</strong>,<br />

listeners, <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d<br />

problem solvers.<br />

It also lowers<br />

our aspirati<strong>on</strong>s<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d inhibits our<br />

willingness to take<br />

risk.<br />

It's About Pl<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>ning<br />

By John Bacot, AICC Vice President <strong>of</strong> Operati<strong>on</strong>s<br />

This issue’s article is about Pl<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>ning.<br />

Nothing, literally, happens without<br />

pl<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>ning. Not even this article happened<br />

without pl<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>ning, even though after you’ve<br />

read it, you might think so.<br />

Pl<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>ning is <strong>on</strong>e <strong>of</strong> those funny things we<br />

c<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>’t do without, but really d<strong>on</strong>’t like to<br />

do. But yet, it happens n<strong>on</strong>e the less. Our<br />

brains are pre-wired for it. You wouldn’t be<br />

reading this article without pl<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>ning.<br />

Now in my study <strong>of</strong> “pl<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>ning” over the<br />

years, I’ve discovered there are primarily<br />

two forms: premeditated <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d sp<strong>on</strong>t<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>eous.<br />

These are the nice names I’ve given them<br />

as these two types <strong>of</strong> pl<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>ning as they c<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

m<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>ifest themselves in as wide a r<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>ge<br />

from the couch potato (which actually<br />

takes pl<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>ning to perform well) to the<br />

clinical excesses <strong>of</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g> individual with<br />

O.C.D., which really is just pl<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>ning to<br />

pl<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g> too much; way, way too much.<br />

So you see we actually pl<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g> everything we<br />

do, or d<strong>on</strong>’t do. We might call what we see<br />

as a lack <strong>of</strong> pl<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>ning to be the absence <strong>of</strong><br />

pl<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>ning. But it really isn’t. Then what you<br />

have is really a pl<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>ned decisi<strong>on</strong> to not<br />

pl<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g> well.<br />

Okay, so what’s my point? You ask. My<br />

point is that making something me<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>ingful<br />

happen other th<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g> what I will call “the<br />

default reality” takes purposeful pl<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>ning.<br />

Pl<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>ning c<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>not take place without a<br />

missi<strong>on</strong> statement - <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g> expressible, written<br />

statement <strong>of</strong> the desired outcome <strong>of</strong> the<br />

pl<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>. Pl<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>ning with the intenti<strong>on</strong> to think<br />

it all the way through; as far forward or<br />

into the future as you possibly c<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>.<br />

Default pl<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>ning is simply allowing you<br />

to be a particip<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>t in some<strong>on</strong>e else’s<br />

pl<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>. You c<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g> make the future happen or<br />

watch the future happen. It will happen<br />

n<strong>on</strong>etheless. But wouldn’t you really rather<br />

be a more functi<strong>on</strong>al part <strong>of</strong> it then just<br />

some<strong>on</strong>e al<strong>on</strong>g for the ride?<br />

Pl<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>ning doesn’t have to be f<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>cy. Oh sure,<br />

you c<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g> find computer applicati<strong>on</strong>s that<br />

will draw critical path networks <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d PERT<br />

diagrams. But actually pl<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>ning c<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g> be a<br />

simple as writing down (single) steps <strong>of</strong> a<br />

process in <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>y order they come to you <strong>on</strong><br />

3x5 or 5x8 file cards <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d then working out<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g> arr<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>gement <strong>of</strong> the cards in a sequence<br />

that makes sense to you <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d your goals.<br />

However you decide to “pl<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>”, we must<br />

pl<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>. As I said: “nothing” happens without<br />

it. And it’s the “Nothing” we have for<br />

which we need to be mindful. The law<br />

<strong>of</strong> unintended c<strong>on</strong>sequences will come<br />

into play quickly when we undertake a<br />

project without careful <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d thoughtful<br />

prior pl<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>ning. It’s great to see the desired<br />

outcome <strong>of</strong> a pl<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g> come together. It’s even<br />

more exciting to know the efforts you took<br />

to pl<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g> for it were worthwhile. It becomes<br />

self reinforcing. Pl<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g> your work, work your<br />

pl<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>, <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d the future is yours. <br />

“ Pl<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>ning is <strong>on</strong>e<br />

<strong>of</strong> those funny<br />

things we c<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>’t do<br />

without, but really<br />

d<strong>on</strong>’t like to do.<br />

THE FINAL SCORE<br />

Looking Ahead,<br />

Reflecting Realities<br />

Earlier this year AICC’s Board<br />

<strong>of</strong> Directors had <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g> interesting<br />

discussi<strong>on</strong> about the future <strong>of</strong><br />

AICC. It’s a healthy discussi<strong>on</strong><br />

to have. In the course <strong>of</strong><br />

developing our next l<strong>on</strong>g-r<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>ge<br />

pl<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>, members are asking<br />

if the Associati<strong>on</strong>’s name,<br />

“Associati<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Independent</strong><br />

<strong>Corrugated</strong> C<strong>on</strong>verters,” is<br />

too narrowly defined given the<br />

way our members’ businesses<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d product mixes have<br />

ch<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>ged over the years.<br />

Certainly our industry has<br />

ch<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>ged dramatically in the<br />

past 20 years. The corrugated<br />

business, while a mature<br />

industry, has embraced<br />

the c<strong>on</strong>st<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>t ch<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>ge <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d<br />

innovati<strong>on</strong> required to keep<br />

it competitive <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d vibr<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>t.<br />

C<strong>on</strong>tainerboard, corrugated<br />

board c<strong>on</strong>structi<strong>on</strong>, finished<br />

box design, printing <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d<br />

finishing are being refined<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d perfected in resp<strong>on</strong>se to<br />

marketplace dem<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d, <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d<br />

nimble independents excel in<br />

this dexterity. But <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>other<br />

phenomen<strong>on</strong> has occurred:<br />

members are also adapting<br />

to their customers’ needs for<br />

total packaging soluti<strong>on</strong>s <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d<br />

in this regard m<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>y are now<br />

<strong>of</strong>fering folding cart<strong>on</strong>s, rigid<br />

boxes, foam, wood <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d related<br />

packaging materials. So in<br />

a sense m<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>y <strong>of</strong> you have<br />

g<strong>on</strong>e from being independent<br />

“corrugated” c<strong>on</strong>verters to<br />

independent “packaging”<br />

providers.<br />

So in looking ahead, should<br />

AICC reflect this ch<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>ge<br />

to better serve you, our<br />

members? In early March we<br />

sent out a survey to members<br />

asking you about your product<br />

mix, its compositi<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d how<br />

it’s ch<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>ged in the past five<br />

years. While at this writing<br />

the results are not yet in, I<br />

would venture to say that most<br />

all <strong>of</strong> you have had to step<br />

up in <strong>on</strong>e way or <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>other to<br />

provide what your customer<br />

w<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>ted – <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d if you saw <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

opportunity in that area, you<br />

took it.<br />

So the questi<strong>on</strong> being<br />

p<strong>on</strong>dered by your Board <strong>of</strong><br />

Directors is this: is it time we<br />

broadened the tent <strong>of</strong> AICC<br />

membership? If success in<br />

the packaging business today<br />

me<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>s being able to meet your<br />

customers’ needs for various<br />

forms <strong>of</strong> packaging, different<br />

Steve Young, AICC President<br />

should not your Associati<strong>on</strong><br />

base its programming <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d<br />

services <strong>on</strong> that model as well?<br />

One thing for sure: the key<br />

word in our name will<br />

never ch<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>ge, <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d that’s<br />

“<strong>Independent</strong>.” This is AICC’s<br />

core focus – our “family value”<br />

– <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d whether you’re in the<br />

corrugated, folding cart<strong>on</strong>,<br />

foam or wood business, you’re<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g> entrepreneur running<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g> independent comp<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>y<br />

dedicated to serving your<br />

customers’ packaging needs.<br />

Stay tuned for more <strong>on</strong> this<br />

topic. In the next issue I’ll<br />

report <strong>on</strong> the results <strong>of</strong> our<br />

survey <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d what your opini<strong>on</strong>s<br />

are about how AICC should<br />

adapt to these ch<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>ges in the<br />
