thank you!

intro
During this 15th edition of our kleine fabriek, we present
you our trend space. This exhibition and trend book will
provide visitors, exhibitors and other interested parties with
an insight into various emerging trends. As kleine fabriek’s
own trendwatcher, I have been conducting research on
emerging fashion trends in order to provide you with the
best possible buyer advice. The book also discusses
trends in children’s retail. Furthermore, and perhaps most
importantly, the book starts by explaining how today’s
young generation differs from other generations. In addition
to kleine fabriek’s own research, various trend agencies
have also contributed to this book, including Trend Bible,
Mudpie, BLOEI, the Cool Collector and Trend Spire, who
present their visions of future trends. For customized
advice, you can find me in the trend space during our trade
show, so make sure that you stop by. All that remains now
is to wish you an enjoyable and inspiring visit!
Toy books presenting girls toys like
kitchens, dolls and vacuums in bright pink
colors and boys toys like cars and tools
in bright blue tints. A familiar image of
which we have now come to realize is a bit
too traditional. We are moving on to less
traditional conceptions and are no longer
making strict divisions between boy and
girl, and pink and blue. It’s all becoming
more androgyne now, which means ungirly
and unboyisch at the same time.

Childeren’s lives today are so much more
structured and supervised, with fewer
opportunities for free play. This story
celebrates the freedom of childhood,
where nothing needs to make sense and
nothing is perfect. Nonsensical characters,
random scattering patterns and simple
childish pleasures like ice cream and
lollipops come together in this sweet,
whimsical trend. Hazy summer days
inspire print and surfaces, with blurred
minihipsters
Ten years ago hipsters were a relative new
phenomenon. But little hipsters grow up and
like normal people, the hipster has a desire
for offspring, amazingly cool offspring!
Hipster parents believe becoming a parent
should not require one to relinquish creative
control over one’s life, move to the suburbs,
and purchase a minivan. They embrace
‘cool parenting’ as a lifestyle choice. Out
with the primary colors and Disney stuff! In
with the vintage children’s books, toys and
contemporary children’s furniture!
Hipster parents want something cuttingedge,
hip and hilarious for the radical kids
in their lives. In short, parents who want to
put their offspring in something they wouldn’t
mind wearing themselves.
On websites like etsy.com it gets obvious
that there is market for Minihipsters. Little
rebellious shirts or teats with mustaches
get an enormous positive response. There
even are lullaby cover versions of songs
by rock bands such as Coldplay, Nirvana,
Pink Floyd, the Beatles, Led Zeppelin and
Bob Marley. Parents used to dream about
their kids growing up to be doctors or
lawyers, now they would be impressed if
they became a member of an Indie rockband
called Half Man Half Biscuit.

Designs from Japan influence designers
from all around the world. Recognizable
for these designs is that they are ‘kawaii’,
which is the Japanese word for cute. This
distinctive Japanese design is derived
from 3 factors; the old craftsman’s
techniques that designers in Japan still
work with, the technical innovations
originated in Japan and the kawaii
characteristics that originated from the
fashion styles in Tokyo’s neighborhood
‘Harajuku’.
Well-being is today’s keyword when we
discuss healthy environments in which we
can function optimally. As we have known
for a long time already, nature is of good
influence on our health. To enjoy these
positive effects of nature indoors, we take
the outside in. Tree trunks, grass, big
windows; the illusion of being in the woods
or in the mountains. Natural colors, forms
and sounds makes us feel as free as a
bird and sharp as an eagle.

People are now traveling more than ever,
and take their kids along. While packing
bags and visiting places these kids get
used to being flexible in living in several
places. As a result, the sense of being
on the road becomes a familiar and safe
environment for them. These nomads and
their kids are attracted to bags which can
function as seats or swings as well, tenta-like
forms and furniture that are easy to
deconstruct and build up again.
Tired of mass culture, of products of which
millions exist and all look exactly the
same. We have come to revalue authentic
craftsmanship, and one of a kind products.
While getting tired of vintage, we look
for something unique that is not per se
something old. Objects created with old
techniques, some of its culture traditional
characteristics, combined with a modern
approach, have our preference. One could
describe this style as ‘future tradition’.

It’s a pharmacy, or wait, no, it’s a candy
character. It is about parody and
pastiche. It is cutting, copying and pasting
of existing elements in order to create
something entirely new and surprising.
Like a table functioning as a marble play
look twice to find its function.

One of the most amazing things about
kids is their innate willingness to be
innovators, brainiacs, crafters, builders
and makers. Given the time, space and
materials, kids will prototype tirelessly all
day long. Samuel Beckett said spot-on:
Ever tried. Ever failed. No matter. Try
again. Fail again. Fail better. Inspired
by this improvised, make-shift look and
feel we see a trend of playful temporary
environments. You could call them trendprototypes,
temporary sketches in space.
Not perfect, but born out of curiosity in how
materials work and how to transform 2D
ideas to 3D. We see this as a playful and
necessary way in creating new innovative
environments. And have even adapted it in
our own way of working.
their children’s surroundings. This place
for adults to drink coffee and shop for their
wonderland
Yesterday’s fairy tale is today’s fact. A
vibrant time where the escape into magic
and a mystic wonderland brings us joy and
hope.
While these times are rough and the
light dims, be optimistic, there is still
enough sparkle that glims… Be inspired
by these glimmers and be enchanted by
“Wonderland”.
Think of every fairy-tale villainess you’ve
ever heard of. Think of the wicked witches,
the evil queens, the mad enchantresses
and dark woods. Take the best of them
all, mix them in your head and experience
the magic of “Wonderland”… Where
everything is what it is, because everything
is what it isn’t...
The colour range shows deepness and
contrast. Black, deeper than the darkest
rave, a touch of glimmering white, whiter
than snow. A bright and sparkling pink in
contrast with easy soft pastels will create a
vigorous colour range.

This is the new maritime style, with some
influences from the designs of Coco
Chanel in the 30ies. Maritime blues, red
and striped patterns. Comfortable beach
wear like wide trousers of soft material,
suit jackets in which you can move freely
without effort, and hats for boys and girls.
Some bows and jewelry are printed on fabric,
and a fixed curl in the hair and this total
look is a wrap.

it’s a matter of
rock!
Tough, strong and powerful. Kids are not
dear dolls anymore, but rock artists with
their own strong opinion. That‘s what
children are nowadays and it shows in
their clothing.
In rough times we search for lightness,
but why not exalt that little bit of extra
darkness? Mix the darkness with pure
fun and joy, that’s what “It’s a matter of
ROCK!” is all about!
The colour range is tough and dark,
but with an optimistic twist. Deep black
meets with sparkling fluor tones and dust
grey. Of course the good old jeans is
indispensable.
Think outside the box and let your inner
rock artist out then you will see where this
trend is all about!
Reflective stands for a nostalgia for
the Soviet era, Eastern European and
Russian design inspires a quirky trend that
juxtaposes past and present. The colour
palette of this fashion trend is inspired
by Russian cartoons with vivid colors like
berry red and turquoise. Fabrics consist
out of ditzy folkloric patterns, heavy wool
and ornated surfaces and a cape is the
ultimate musthave.

new renaissance
Mediterranean lifestyles and a renewal
of interest in European design spurs the
growth of a look inspired by classic art &
culture. New renaissance is a laid back
summer style with faded and sun bleeched
colors, peeling whitewash and bright
pastels. In the patterns there is a focus on
flora and fauna and the styling has an oldschool
chic styling ethos.
