WHAT A TEAM!
A huge thank you to everyone who made
the Concours at the Coast a success!
Since we had PCA activities Saturday and
Sunday, we needed extra helping hands.
So many people knew of our “homeless” liv-
ing conditions we were fortunate to have folks
inside CCCR and non-members give their time.
Saturday the “Goodie Store” maven, Marla and
Hubby Robert, set up their PCA wares to sell.
Bruce Bero and son shlepped the tent and mis-
cellaneous supplies. Sanja Brewer and son plus
Eriel Nash had it going strong in Mission Plaza,
by 9 a.m. Later Eriel and Bob went to the Golf
course to lay out the competition area
Carol Walker just moved back into CCCR
land and volunteered to help. Catherine and Roger
Welt jumped in to help as well.
Dave Mills had experience as a scorer, as did Bob
Kitamura. Then we volunteered Robert Hill and the
three of them got their calculators smokin’ to come
up with our winners.
My friends Stacey DeLaney and Brian Gradoville
took car of shlepping flowers and ice. They also are
responsible for taking pictures and printing them on
the spot for everyone. Even Brian’s Dad got a job as
timer and runner.
Connie Betts, Catherine Welt and Carol Walker
set up the trophy table. They also, served our break-
fast goodies.
Since the golf course had no electrical and
would not allow a generator, Brian created the an-
swer with car batteries and a power inverter! When
my ancient printer choked, Eriel Nash came to our
aid to keep the pictures coming!
Everyone came early and stayed late to help.
I hope everyone had a good time and we can look
forward to an even bigger 2009 event.
Of course the event could not have gone so
smoothly without the assistance of Joe Demeo (con-
cours winner and judge) from Southern California,
who offered his expertise.
Zone Rep Michael Dolphin was a true “treasure”
as usual. He works so hard to attend all Zone 8 Re-
gion events. Our hat’s off to him.

Book Review

Porsche High-Performance Driving Handbook
2nd Edition

Reviewed by Jerry Jett
Being the first to win the Monte Carlo rally in a
Porsche, then the 24 hour race at Daytona just one
week later, has more than qualified Mr. Elford to write
this handbook. He was also the first to lap La Mans at
over 150 MPH, driving a Porsche (of course!), but more
importantly, there hasn’t been a driver in the history of
car racing to be as successful in all types of racing. From
Rally to exquisite 1250 Horse Porsche 917/30, and even
NASCAR, he continued to win races right up to few years
ago in Vintage Racing.
He opens the book by dedicating it to Porsche Driv-
ers and other drivers who put quality and performance
first. Covering all types of driving, the book emphasizes
safety first. Going into more detail for the motor-
ing enthusiast, each chapter uses illustrations
from the author’s own racing career, along with
everyday driving, to nail home the point of the
particular subject of that chapter.
I found the book enjoyable because it takes
a casual approach to the subject as opposed to
a strictly text book format. Vic makes no bones
about being a Porsche Man, but has raced under
other marquees. I found it to be most interesting
that he devotes time to discussing the differences
in the physics of various drive configurations.
Although I didn’t read the first edition, it is
my understanding that it was penned in Vic’s own
unique approach. The second edition has been
updated with new information and includes the
more modern cars. I would highly recommend
this book to any driver; novice, like myself, or ex-
pert. The race stories alone are worth the cover
price, the photos are excellent, and there is much
to be learned from a true champion!

The top most entry for any class is the class winner.
The division winners are Joseph Demeo - Concours, Philip Henius - Street, Bob Kitamura - Wash and
Shine, and Rob Heyne - Unrestored.
In Unrestored Rob Heyne and Marcie Fricia both had equal scores. The division winner was decided by
Zone 8 rules, 2008, Section IV-D-1: says......”.........;the car having the highest score in the most areas will be the
winner. One area was tied, Rob was low in one and high in two areas, and therefore deemed the winner. Rob
and Marcie, you can’t get much closer than that.
A great job by all the participants, many of which also were selected to judge these cars.

losing first to Philip Henius with a Black Turbo-

(upon passing the course) to become a PCA National Instructor.

OK. So we’re displaced from our
home due to smoke damage from a
kitchen fire, we HAD the Concours at
the Coast event to hurriedly get togeth-
er, I’m working 60 hours a week and with travel, that’s
14 hours a day, and I’m working on the November issue
of the Coastalaire that is due to post tomorrow.
time........
I apologize up front for being late again. So little
I did say HAD relative to the Concours. If you didn’t
go, you missed a good one. Here’s how the day went:
It’s O-dark thirty (6:30 a.m. and still dark on the
18th fairway of Avila Beach Golf Resort. Alyce and I are
starting to park and get stuff unpacked, and it’s quite
damp. Already, I’m concerned about the Concours as
I am (as far as I know, the only qualified Zone 8 Con-
cours Judge at the event.
We set things up and I clean the car some more it’s
tough in wet).
Participants have arrived, parked, and are diligent-
ly cleaning. I go around systematically, and ask partici-
pants if they would judge if asked. Most responded
with “I don’t know about that as I’ve never done that
before.
As I’m talking with the last entrant to be inter-
viewed for the judging job (Joe Demeo), Michael
Dolphin walked up.
My thought is Aaaahhh! Michael is here, now there
are at least two judges (Michael is the Zone 8 rep)
A short time later (seconds to cleaners and hours
to me), our new staff of judge recruits gathered for a
judges meeting. Then we went out into the world to
judge. All the judges, timers, and runners are all volun-
teers.
Concours cars first (there were two cars in two dif-
ferent classes. Then the team broke up into two teams.
Joe and Marcie took the Street and Unrestored cars
and Michael’s team (this included me) tackled
the Wash and Shine group of 8 cars.
Getting finished a little late again this year,
the score cypherers (Dave Mills, Bob KItamura,
ad Robert Hill) were now busy crunching num-
bers
When the calculator smoke cleared, the
winners could now be announced. Keep in
mind, I entered this year in Street instead of
Wash and Shine (overconfident?).
Two nights before the Sunday event, we
got a call (one of those people that we were
able to actually make conversation and the sig-
nal didn’t drop out) from a Philip Henius, from
Santa Barbara Region. He wanted to compete
in our event. Alyce got off the phone and told
me we had another entry.
“Really. What class” (and knowing what
class). She says “S-6”. I exhaled and thought
“well, 2nd place isn’t so bad”.
In all fairness, Philips black Turbo Look 997,
absolutely should have won. It is beautiful and
mine just needed a bit more attention.
I would like to thank sincerely, all the
persons who judged at our event AND all the
volunteers who came to our event and worked.
Alyce and I hope you all enjoyed the event.
Many of our volunteers are not Porsche own-
ers, don’t belong to the Porsche Club, and quite
honestly, were there to help at the request of
Alyce. The judges were due more to me and
Michael.
Thank you! You all did a wonderful job at
the 2008 Concours at the Coast.

Members running for CCCR Board Positions
Alyce Thorp has been on the Board several times. As President, Vice President, Treasurer,
and more. She conceiverd the Concours at the Coast, and a Zone 7 vs Zone 8 event called the
California Challenge. She has, again, chaired Concours at the Coast in 2007 and 2008. Alyce is
currently, CCCR Vice President
Bob Mayberry has served as President, Membership Chair, Newsletter Editor, was co-design-
er and promoter of CCCR’s website (we were the fourth in PCA to have a website), and Database
Chair. Bob has been judging Concours for 25 years, is a Zone 8 Autocross Instructor and is serv-
ing presently as Webmaster, Newsletter Editor, Database Chair and general grunt for CCCR.
Marla Hill has been on the CCCR Board for several years and served those as Secretary. She
also is the CCCR Goodie Store Operator and successfully I might add. She attends many events
and is always ready to help where needed.
Sanja Brewer has been on the Board for two years and has served as Membership Chair.
She works closely with Alyce to create promotion for CCCR by working to get sponsors and
to promote the club to potential members. She attends functions as her schedule allows but
continues her promotional ways behind the scenes most often.
Richard Fanning is no stranger to most of CCCR. He has served on CCCR’s Board in many
positions. He is (and has been for several years, now) the Treasurer. Keeping accurate records
and providing the rest of the Board advice in many ways including legal. Richard serves, dedi-
cated to keeping the finances of CCCR correct.
Bruce Bero, currently serving as Safety Chairman, has been on the Board for two years.
He always has solid advice and input and a keen sense of right and wrong. Bruce has consis-
tantly aided other members on events they chaired and is dependable to help if called.
Martin Howell was appointed as a member at large last year and became a Board member
this year. He has been co-chair of the monthly breakfast at Dorn’s and is a consistant partici-
pant in CCCR events.
Jon MIlledge came the board late last year and has served all of this year. Jon has been
primarily working with Per on CCCR’s upcoming PCA Driving Instructor training and approval
course. As well, Jon and his wife Vicki have often volunteered on events chaired by others.
. Chuck (Charlie) Derego has attended many CCCR events since joining CCCR nearly two
years ago. He’s entusiastic about serving on the CCCR Board of Directors.

OCTOBER EVENT:
The 2008 Concours at the Coast is now history. It was an event that was different. We had 27 cars
on the lawn (allowed 30). We had 18 signed up for competition which at the event, dropped to 15. Of
the 15, 13 (I believe) were from CCCR, 1 from Santa Barbara, and 1 from Southern California. Of the 15
judged cars, we had 8 members judge. Of these 8, 5 had never judged before. I’ve since heard from
most of those “new judges” and they seemed grateful for the chance to judge.
Michael and I are now working to get a Zone 8 judging school up closer to this area, so persons
like those “new judges” can more easily satisfy the requirements and become a certified Zone 8 Con-
cours judge. At this event, they all “showed”, all “judged” so all they need now is the school and they
are ready.
