Runners survive Alpenfest Run's heat
GAYLORD — While heat slowed tiroes
considerably, runners who finished the 1963
Alpenfest 7.5 mile mn on July 16 could take
some satisfaction.
Completing the course in the grueling
more than 250 runners. About 40 more dropped
out during the run. primarily because of
the sticky, hot conditions.
The course record time of 37:04 set by Bob -
another year. Kevin Hansen of Sterling
Heights clocked 39:22 this year, a full halfminute
ahead of second place Pat Duffy of
Sault Ste. Marie.
Amy Gosling of Cedar placed first among
women runners with a time of 51.56.
[Library Corner
By MARY JANE JEHLE
Otsego County Librarian
We have a very special collection of books in the
library . They're right up near the front door — close
to the comfortable chairs.
These are the "large print" books, and the library
has almost 90 of them. The reason we have so many
is because a very special group of ladies has been
very generous over the years. Each year, for the
past nine years, the ladies of the Eagles Auxiliary
have donated $100 for the purchase of these special
books.
Large print books look like any others. They're
about the same size and shape. They're not any
heavier or larger. Only the print is larger. (It's set in
18 point type for those of you who know about that
sort of thin^.) The only other difference is that they
Qwaxtiy&ar
RESTAURANT °WYNE CITY*
C o u n t i y £ t a r
usually coat more than regular books.
That cost factor would ordinarily prevent their
purchase. Libraries, like any other public facility,
must spend their money where it will fill the largest
need. And, fortunately, most people can still read ordinary
print.
However, if you can't; if your glasses get stronger
and your arms aren't quite long enough anymore,
large print is the greatest thing to come along in
many a day.
The ladies recognise this and are caring enough to
see to it that people in our county, who have a little
trouble with little print, can still enjoy reading.
We are very grateful to the Fraternal Order of
Eagles Auxiliary No. 1825.
You should be grateful, too.
Skoog should please the sportsman
THE SELECTION of Dr. Ron Skoog as the new
director of the Dept. of Natural Resources sets the
stagelor the next era in DNR history.
Peter Lanahan, from New York, was offered the
job, but turned if down. Lanahan was the choice of
Governor Blanchard. '
The Governor was criticized for pressuring the
Natural Resources Commission into making the offer
to the New Yorker. Apparently, the Governor
had asked the commission to reopen the search. But
the NRC offered the job to Sloog last week, by a 5-2
vote.
Skoog will take over in September and faces a
multitude of problems. The front office of the DNR is
racked by dissension and in-fighting.
Many DNR employees make more than Sloog will
and are locked into their positions by civil service.
I've always believed that field and staff positions
need the protection of civil-service laws, but it seems
to me that the director ought to be able to appoint
division chiefs and other top level positons of his
choice.
From those I've talked with, Skoog is a tough
leader — absolutely dedicated to hunting and fishing
and "realistic enviromental goals." His last position
was as director of Alaska's Fish and Game Dept.
THE MICHIGAN DNR is much bigger, both in
terms of duties, manpower and budget. The DNR
probably has more contact with Michigan citizens
than any other state agency, gets the assignment of
controversial tasks and issues, (i.e. PBB, toxic poisoning
of fish. Project ELF. oil and gas operations,
the list could go on and uu) ;iad the director is on someone's
hot seat all the time. Some questions
Skoog's temperment for such a job. Time will tell.
Many seasoned observers of the DNR are ecstatic
My bottom line right now is that Blanchard will do
the right things in natural resource polic>' and appointments.
Skoog will be a good director, but ought
to have a year to year review of his performance, not
an open-end term as in the past No slur against
Skoog, that's just the way it should be. •
The NRG will hopefully get into more policy
discussion and formulation, which would help them
avoid the crisis to crisis approach used in the past
and present. ... . ...
My last predicition is that history will treat
Howard Tanner better than the press has in the last
few years. Tanner made many significant contributions
that have been overlooked in the debate over
Many seasoned observers ot we unn are
his shortcomings. Mark my word on these questions.
Qf Of course, I'm the same guy wno who believes in —Sas-
over the appointment. They've talked with Skoog qualch< the Loch Ness monster and thinks the Tigers
and checked him out and believe he is the right man ^ win their division. • — '
for the right time.
The job is almost impossible. The DNR director
must be a skilled administrator, superb public relations
man, dedicated advocate of a clean environment,
talented politician and lobbyist, and a hunter
and fisherman. He must not beat his wife - or his
dog. ....
In short, the question is, can anyone meet all those
qualifications? Former director Ralph McMullen
had many of them and all directors since him have
been held up to Mac as the standard. None have
measured up and probably none will.
TO TOP IT ALL, Skoog doesn't have Blanchard's
trust and has less than total support of the NRC.
Hg'II have a tough road ahead of him.
Par-reaching changes are on the horizon. A new
Governor who has yet to stake out his claim on environmental
and conservation issues. A new right
hand man in the Governor's office for environmental—
affairs. Dave Dempsey, has to win over the trfditional
hunting and fishing groups, who are'very
powerful. He'll do it. He's a good one. Three new
DRC members have to mesh with the four returning
members. J _ ,
However, commissioners Jake Hoeffer and Faul
Wendler's terms expire this year. Whether they are
seeking reappointment — or will get it, is specula-
Umi at this time. Tha point i«, Rlanrha.nl rnuki have
his appointees in control by Jan. 1, if he chooses.
.^Vhere they might take natural resources policy is
Poison ivy: 'leaflets three' seasonal advice
By JOHN ANDREWS
HT Start Writer
GAYLORD - There is
an old botanical saying
that goes "leavelets
three, let it be." It applies
to poison ivy.
Poison ivy can be
found almost anywhere
in northern Michigan,
from woods to open
fields. Soil conditions for
the plant range from
moist to very dry.
Common sites for
poison ivy infestations
are the edge of the
woods, fencerows, along
roads and paths and in
old stone walls. It is not
unusual to find it in the
home landscape along
with shrubs, ornamentals
and other perennial
plants. ..
It can be positively
identified by the leaves
in groups of three, aa the
old saying indicates.
Other plants such as
Boston ivy, can have
three leaflets, but not all
will be divided into
three. Some will only
have one deeply cut
leaflet.
Virginia creeper is
often confused with
poison ivy, but instead it
has five to seven leaflets
per group, not three.
In the spring, young
poison ivy leaves are
reddish and drooping. As
the leaves expand, the
color changes to glossy
or dull green. The leaves
are usually smooth,
although hairy forms
have been discovered.
The leaf shape can vary
widely.
Clusters of small
greenish flowers may
, develop where the leaves
join the stem after they
appear. The berry like
waxy fruits produced by
these flowers in the summer
are common^ gray
to white. The berries also
have lines running
lengthwise which can
give them the appearance
of a peeled
orange. Sometimes the
berries are covered with
hair.
Skin irritation from
poison ivy is caused by
an oil present in leaves,
stems, flowers and fruit.
The oil is present at all
times of the year.
BURNING the plant is
not recommended, for
soot particles can carry
the oil, and the most
severe cases have been
reported following the
burning of poison ivy.
Normally, one must
\CT
have to touch the plant
before feeling its poisoning
effects. However,
contact with contaminated
objects,
equipment, clothing, or
animals can also produce
the symptoms.
Individual sensitivity
to poison ivy varies, and
some people never feel
ill effects. Natural immunity
is originally present
in all persons, but is
reduced by contact with
the poisonous oil.
Slight irritation and itching
can develop after
12 to 24 hours, and up to
three or four days alter
exposure. _
In the case of
suspected contact with
poison ivy, wash the affected
area using
lukewarm water and a
strong alkali laundry
soap. An oil based soap
should not be used as it
tends to spread the
poisonous oil.
Wash several times
with rinsing. It is difficult
to remove all the
oil by washing. However,
this procedure will help
prevent spreading to
other parts of the body.
