Gospel – John 3:14-21
Join us next week as our readings‟ focus is: “God is rich in mercy
and love.” Throughout Salvation history, God has shown, again
and again, His love for humanity. He did this most clearly and fully,
however, by sending His only begotten Son to redeem us. Let us
rejoice and give praise to our God.
Cup o’ Joe
Weekly Reflections by Joseph Zenk, Parish Director
Traditionally within the Catholic Church, weeks 3-5 within Lent
are set aside for “the Scrutinies.” I know, I know – sounds like a
1950‟s B-grade horror movie or some type of new reality TV
show. But let me tell you – it‟s not nearly as scary as either of
those.
Instead, a Scrutiny is a rite within the Church given to those
who are preparing to join the Catholic community during the
Easter Vigil this coming April 7. The Scrutinies consist of three
different rites – one for each of the upcoming three Sundays of
Lent – and it begins what is called a period of “Purification and
Enlightenment” for the Catechumen and Candidates within our
parishes.
Now lest I begin to throw around too many churchy-type
words, let me begin with a definition. A Catechumen is a young
man or woman who has decided to enter the Catholic Church but
as of yet has not been baptized. They belong to no organized
faith community and therefore are making a decision for Jesus
Christ and for the Catholic Church.
A Candidate, on the other hand, is a young man or woman
who has decided to enter the Catholic Church, but has already
been baptized into the Christian faith – just within a church
different than Catholicism. So, for instance, a person who has
been baptized Lutheran or UCC who would decide to join the
Catholic faith would be a Candidate within our RCIA classes.
While their decision is monumental, it is different than the
decision of a Catechumen. A Catechumen is saying “yes” to
Jesus for the first time. A Candidate has already said “yes” to
Christ in their journey of faith, but they are looking to do it in a
new way that opens them to all seven sacraments.
Back to the Scrutinies. These next three Sundays (including
today) there will be special moments set aside for those joining
our parishes this Easter. These rites are meant to uncover, and
then heal, all that is weak, defective or sinful in the hearts of the
elect (the Catechumen and Candidates) and to strengthen all that
is upright, strong and good within them. Our hope is that these
rites deepen the resolve of these men and women to hold fast to
Christ. Which of us wouldn‟t want to be prayed over in a similar
manner?
While St. Ann and Holy Rosary have no Candidates or
Catechumen at this time, there are two Catechumen at Ss. Peter
& Paul. Please pray for Noelle & Aaron Bonde as we draw closer
to Easter, where they will experience the waters of baptism for
the first time. May their commitment strengthen all of us in the
“yes” we have already said to Jesus Christ.
WORLD’S POOR COLLECTION
Next Sunday, we will have the annual diocesan collection for the
World‟s Poor. The three agencies represented are official church
agencies that work to help the poor help themselves out of
poverty. In this collection you have a choice to contribute to any
one or all of the following funds:
-Campaign for Human Development is a domestic anti-poverty
program that helps the poor to help themselves – 25% of this
collection remains in our diocese to support local anti-poverty
efforts.
-Bishop’s Overseas Appeal supports Catholic Relief Services,
Migration & Refugee Services, Social Development and World
Peace.
-Peter’ Pence is the Pope‟s personal poverty relief fund.
There will not be a second collection this year for the „World‟s
Poor Collection‟. We ask that you place your contribution into the
regular collection. All donations to this special collection must be
specifically marked by placing in it the World‟s Poor Envelope, a
pew envelope or a plain envelope marked World‟s Poor. Thank
you for your generosity to the poor of the world.
OUR LINKED PARISHES’
LENTEN OPPORTUNITIES
LENTEN COMMUNAL RECONCILIATION SERVICE
All parishioners from our three linked parishes of Holy Rosary, St.
Ann and SS. Peter & Paul are invited and encouraged to attend
our upcoming communal celebration of the Sacrament of
Reconciliation on Tuesday, March 27 at Holy Rosary Parish. This
evening will begin with a brief prayer service at 6:30 p.m., after
which five priests will be available for individual reconciliation at
various places throughout the worship space. This sacrament is
an exceptional way for us to prepare for the new life Christ brings
to us this Easter!
OTHER AREA LENTEN RECONCILIATION SERVICES
March 21-Good Shepherd Church, Chilton at 6:00 PM
March 28-Holy Trinity Church, School Hill at 6:00 PM
LENTEN MATERIALS
You are encouraged to take one of the reflection books located at
each entryway of our churches to assist you as you journey
through Lent. They invite you to spend some quite time in prayer
with them each day. There are also other materials (including
prayer ideas, daily scripture readings during Lent, etc) you are
welcome to take as well.
LENTEN PROJECT
GO F.I.S.H.– Wow! We are continuing on a very good pace with
our Lenten GO F.I.S.H. Project. This last weekend we collected
$2,045.13 between our linked parishes of Holy Rosary, St. Ann
and SS. Peter & Paul. The total to date is $4,200.64. We thank
you for your financial support of this project, but we also ask for
your prayers for the people of Haiti and for the success of this
project in Cuperlier once the lake is stocked.
We will continue to take a second collection each Sunday of
Lent at all three parishes for the Lenten project, Go F.I.S.H.
(Families and Individuals in Support of Haiti). Together, our three
parishes will try to raise enough money to stock fish in the lake for
the people of Cuperlier, Haiti through Food for the Poor, Inc.
STATIONS OF THE CROSS
All are invited to pray this traditional prayer during Lent. Three
different evenings are offered:
SS. Peter & Paul – Mondays at 6:00 p.m.
St. Ann – Wednesdays at 7:00 p.m. Rosary to follow.
Holy Rosary – Fridays at 6:30 p.m.
We also offer two opportunities to pray the Stations of the Cross
during the day with our Divine Savior School students. Both are
on Fridays: 12:20 at Holy Rosary and 2:00 at SS. Peter and Paul.
All are welcome!
WEDNESDAY EVENING LENTEN MASS
Looking for an opportunity to spend some extra time with God
during Mass this Lent? Holy Rosary will be offering an evening
SUMMER SERVICE TRIP FOR THE WEEK OF JULY 8 – 14
Ten Participants will go to St. Louis, Missouri this Summer to
assist with various service projects. Young Neighbors in Action is
a Catholic Program which engages participants in Catholic Social
Mass. You may „buy stock‟ into our students at $10.00 a share.
Mark your calendars! Your support is always appreciated.
VITAL YOUTH MINISTRY TEAM
invites all parish members to continue to pray for the Youth of our
parish and community during this blessed month of March.
Dear Lord, during this Lenten Season, we pray for our Youth
that they may renew their spiritual life with time spent praying,
fasting and making sacrifices when they give things up, and
almsgiving which will help them to be more like You. With the
guidance of the Holy Spirit, inspire them to resist doing foolish
behavior only to impress others. Fill them with your loving spirit
and an appreciation for the value of everyday. Whatever they do,
we pray, they do this for the glory of You.
Thank you, Lord, for your examples of generosity, kindness,
prayer, love, and service to one another. May our Youth do good
works when they help other people through their daily life. Your
strength and love will become apparent as they take this time to
reflect on who they are and where they are going. Amen.
DIVINE SAVIOR CATHOLIC SCHOOL NEWS
Last (February 27 through March 2) was Read Across America
Week. And we at Divine Savior Catholic School had a very
special visitor on Friday. Our Bishop David Ricken paid a visit to
both campuses as well as the Salvatorian Mission in New
Holstein. Bishop Ricken spoke to all our students in the Middle
School classrooms and was treated to original song compositions
by several students. At the Elementary campus he read two
stories to all the students gathered in Voland Hall and enjoyed a
wonderful version of the Our Father the children had prepared for
him using sign language. The Bishop also received a special gift
basket on behalf of our school community.
Our children and staff experienced a very genuine and gentle
man in the Bishop and his rapport with both child and adult left
everyone feeling comfortable and appreciated. We are truly
blessed to have a man of Bishop Ricken‟s temperament and
stature as our shepherd in the Green Bay diocese.
We had many members of our community come in to spend
time and read to our students. We are truly grateful that so many
of our community leaders understand the value of reading and
want to share that passion with children. To all those who gave
so generously, a heartfelt Thank You.
Let‟s continue to celebrate reading all year. Books feed our
imagination which in turn color our dreams and dreams change
the world. Please take some time, in the near future to reconnect
with your favorite book, or maybe find a new one. Reading opens
up windows and expands understanding like nothing else. It
allows us to live richly, live deeply and live forever.
A KNIGHT OF CREATIVE CRUSADES
A Knight of Creative Crusades (Divine Savior School Auction) is
well under way; become part of the excitement and donate a
talent or passion of your own. There are donation sheets and
tickets for sale in the back of church as well as at the Divine
Savior school office. Time is running out and the committee
is eagerly awaiting your contributions. Please get your donation
forms filled out and turned in soon. We would like donation forms
in by April 1. If you have any questions please contact Thomas &
Lent: Letting God Surprise Us
By: Kristina M. DeNeve
Evangelization and Welcoming Director
Diocese of Green Bay
Of all the Gospel stories about Jesus, the cleansing in the
temple is perhaps the one most commonly misused to justify our
actions. Who has not known a “righteous anger,” spoken up or
done something about it, and then used this Gospel to be at
peace with our actions?
There is just one major problem. Nowhere in any account of
the cleansing do the Gospel writers indicate that Jesus was
angry. No Gospel writer spoke of Jesus‟ internal state of mind.
None used violent words to depict the table turning.
Look too at Jesus‟ actions. Never, ever, never does Jesus
“stick up for himself.” Instead, Jesus always, always, always,
absorbs injustice. Absorbs it, transforms it, and then responds
with openness and love.
God does not want us to be punching bags for others,
absorbing abuse (physical, emotional, etc.) or letting injustice
continue. God does surprise us, however, by showing us that, in
the face of injustice, we are capable of acting out of
centeredness, balance, goodness, love.
With Jesus‟ Spirit, even righteous anger does not have to be
angry.
