2010-2011 THEME:
“The Great Depression”
What is the Academic Decathlon
Like the Decathlon of the ancient Greeks, the San Bernardino
County Academic Decathlon consists of ten exacting
and exciting competitions. While the Greek events were
contests of physical strength, the San Bernardino County
event is a test of academic strength and endurance.
County champions are provided an opportunity to
participate at the state and national levels of this
prestigious event.

Team Selection, Awards, Recognition, & Fees
Each participating school sends a team of six to nine students to the
County competition. A full team consists of nine students from the ninth
through twelfth grades. The team may be comprised of all freshmen, all
sophomores, all juniors, all seniors, or a combination. These members
can be any combination of males and/or females. Each full team includes
three Varsity (0.00 - 2.99 GPA), three Scholastic (3.00-3.74 GPA), and
three Honor students (3.75-4.00 GPA). Although a team may have fewer
than nine students, it should not have fewer than six students in order
to be eligible for awards. Those six students must be two Honor, two
Scholastic, and two Varsity.
There is a $750.00 registration fee per team.

Public and Private School Students in Grades 6, 7, and 8 Compete
as Individuals and as Team Members in a Series of Five Academic
Tests
• MatheMatics • essay • Literature • science • sociaL science
Teamwork is the heart of the Academic Pentathlon. Students in their middle
school years feel a strong need for peer approval and support; they are often
willing to work harder for their peer group than for themselves. By helping
each other to prepare for the competition, Pentathletes help bring out the
potential in each other.
This event teaches students to appreciate different styles of learning, interests
and talents, and it enhances their ability to work as a team. Students also gain
valuable long-term benefits from this program. They develop traits which the
business community is seeking from leaders: self-confidence, assertiveness, the
ability to work as a team, and a high level of self-motivation and direction.

History-Based Learning Experience
History Day is an interdisciplinary program that encourages students to research and prepare papers, exhibits,
performances, documentary presentations, websites and posters on an annual historical theme. All entries are
judged by historians, educators, and other professionals in related fields. Students increase their knowledge of
history and historical resources through classroom activities within the content and process of the social studies
and language arts curriculum.

& Engineering Fair
The Inland Science and Engineering Fair is an
annual competition of science projects designed,
developed, and displayed by elementary and
secondary students from schools in Riverside, Inyo,
Mono and San Bernardino counties.

Fair
RIMS
Participants share their creative abilities, knowledge, and interests with
other students. Experienced judges with background knowledge in
specific areas of science critique the projects for qualities including
scientific method, content, clarity of presentation, and originality.
Award Ceremony
Awards include trophies, medals, and opportunities to go on to further
competition at the California State Science Fair. Community awards
are presented to students from private businesses and organizations.
Some of the awards include cash prizes and educational bonds.
