• to discuss the different mean<strong>in</strong>gs of the term ‘human resource management’ (HRM);<br />
• to illustrate the diverse work undertaken by the human resources (HR) function;<br />
• to <strong>in</strong>troduce some of the early models of HRM and to analyse the reasons for its<br />
acceptance and growth, plac<strong>in</strong>g HRM’s arrival with<strong>in</strong> a wider economic and political<br />
context;<br />
• to outl<strong>in</strong>e some of the major changes occurr<strong>in</strong>g with<strong>in</strong> organizations and to identify the<br />
