USTA’S TENNIS ON CAMPUS - HOW SWEET IT IS!
As a USPTA Tennis Teaching Professional you not
only teach those that come through your doors, you
provide a circle of tennis information for your students
every day. I am sure your older students are
encouraged to sign up for lessons, drill and play,
tournaments and league play while you encourage
younger students to enter the game through play
days, tournaments, high school tennis and eventually
progress them towards college tennis and leagues.
You might even ask all of them to attend local tennis
events to show support for the sport and potentially
ask them to join the USTA.
When the USTA began the Tennis On Campus program
a little over 10 years ago, no one had any idea
what the program would bring. In those 10 short
years the program has progressed to upwards of 600
colleges and universities working with over 35,000
non-varsity collegiate intramural and club tennis team
players. According to many industry analysts, this
has been one of the brightest spots in aiding tennis
growth over the past few years.
As a USPTA member serving on the USTA’s Tennis
On Campus Committee, I have seen tremendous
growth of this program. I believe the reasons are
many; they socialize, they fundraise, they budget time,
participate in community service projects, travel and network
while actively supporting one another in a socially
coed team environment. It is the future. As a USPTA
Professional, this group is extremely important to you
because it will be your next generation of frequent players.
Your facility should actively begin marketing to this
expanding group for building membership and programming
revenue, equipment sales, court time and for your
If you are working with high school age tennis players,
please be sure they are aware of Tennis On Campus. For
the young person who wants to play in college, but may
lack the skills required for Varsity play, this is the answer.
Please relay the TOC website, www.tennisoncampus.com
to all your high school age students and their parents. You
will be glad you did.

“Teaching Club/Recreational Players to Play Like
the Pros”
by Brad Humphreys, USPTA Certifi ed
Our USPTA San Diego Division is alive and well! We
are lucky to have such great-dedicated leadership in our
Division and a large number of teaching professionals
willing to take time out of their busy schedules to share
their knowledge.
Another USPTA San Diego Division successful TPFL
took place on September 5, <strong>2012</strong>, at the La Jolla Beach
and Tennis Club, thanks to over 25 teaching professionals
attending and participating! Most of those attending seized
the opportunity to share their expertise and engaged an
open mind in thought provoking dialog.
A special “Thank You” to Marc Assaraf, Derrick Miller and Matt Previdi for helping me get things started.
Following is an extremely condensed version of some of our “Tennis Tips”:
Develop the athlete and then the tennis player.
Soccer ball return of serve. Teaches player to move with their feet, stepping out at a 45-degree angle.
Start play right away with serve and return. Run for every ball in or out.
Spilt step, squeak shoes, lean forward on toes. Anticipate and turn right or left quick.
Two steps for groundstrokes, one step for volley.
Utilize ITF Coaching handout ‘Assessing Your Tennis’.
Volley – push the door open, do not slam it shut.
Keep elbow in front of body on volleys.
See backside of strings when hitting volley.
Lift glass of water up for the toss without a shower, push label on ball straight up, let wrist bend down as
hand goes up.
Use exhale words like “hit”, watch the “ball”, to create breathing, relaxation, release of tension.
Eight board theory – toss off the hip, integrate with body. Top four male players do not land with both feet
at the same time in a split step – they land 1–2, or “tap–tap”.
All movement begins from the core. Abdominal center turns fi rst to hit a volley.
Teach like the pros play.
The better the player, the less they think. Train student to develop sub conscious. Imagine a diamond shaped
graph of the developing tennis player's thinking. When starting to learn tennis, the beginner does not know
what to think and the expert thinks very little. (In between there may be a lot of thinking.)
Focus on the big picture. Students work on strokes, pros work on strategy.
“Mind your own business.” Face ahead, focus ahead in doubles.
Have the courage to tell yourself the truth about what you are observing from a student, and then have the
courage to tell the parents regardless of the consequences.
We each have an obligation and responsibility to contribute to our professional organization, to give back to the
game of tennis and our community that has contributed to our success. Thank you to everyone who participated.
Gretchen Magers was recently appointed the new
head coach for women's tennis at Claremont-Mudd-
Scripps College.
“Gretchen brings a phenomenal background of competitive
experiences in tennis: Collegiate, International,
Olympic, and as a teaching pro,” Sutton said.
“All this is coupled with her enthusiasm, energy, and
excitement for the opportunity of working with a team
of student-athletes who have the potential to excel
in collegiate tennis. We are very fortunate to have
Coach Magers in our program and I look forward to
the continued growth and success of Athena tennis.”
Magers has been the head women’s tennis coach for
San Diego City College since 2008. In addition to
her coaching experience, Magers served as the head
tennis professional at Peninsula Tennis Club from
1996-<strong>2012</strong>. She has also served as tennis professional
at the La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club, Lomas Santa
Fe Country Club and Fairbanks Ranch Country Club.
“I can’t wait to get to Claremont and help the CMS
Athenas tennis team reach new heights,” said Magers.
“It is a dream come true for me to be at a school like
the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps College. The academic
reputations, the exceptional student bodies and world
class facilities make for an ideal environment for our
student-athletes to thrive. I am so grateful for the op-
portunity to work with the returning players, incoming
players and our capable tennis staff of Kathy Settles and
Hank Krieger. The sky is the limit with this team.”
Magers played 10 years on the WTA tour and was a top
20 singles and doubles player. She was a quarterfi nalist
at the U.S. Open, French Open and Wimbledon. She
represented the United States in the 1984 Olympics, the
World University Games, the Pan American Games and
the Senior ITF World Championships. Collegiately, she
was a four-time All-American at Trinity University where
she was NCAA doubles champion in 1983 and NCAA
runner-up in singles and doubles in both 1985 and 1986.
Magers has a Bachelor’s in Physical Education from Trinity
with a minor in Biology. She also earned a Master’s
in Sports Administration from California University of
Pennsylvania.
The San Diego Division will miss Gretchen and we wish
her well!

The USPTA has announced plans to move forward following
Tim Heckler’s retirement as chief executive offi cer effective
Dec. 31, <strong>2012</strong>, after 30 years in the position.
Heckler announced his intent to retire earlier this year and the
Board of Directors also offered Heckler a one-year severance
The Board of Directors recently hired industry veteran John
a demonstration of his passion, his commitment to the
association, and his endless hard work for helping and
improving the well-being of the tennis-teaching professional,”
President Daglis said.
The USPTA honored Heckler in 2000 by naming him a grand
the George Bacso Lifetime Achievement Award.
“We are pleased to welcome John Embree into the USPTA
company management skills will serve the USPTA well,” said
President Tom Daglis.
Tim Heckler Retires
Embree has held a wide variety of infl uential tennis industry
Level: This information pertains to all level of players.
To help students understand how to hit the ball in different
directions, use the clock analogy.
1. Think of the tennis ball as a clock (see picture)
- Forehand cross court, the racket contact will be at 3:00
- Forehand inside-out cross court, the racket contact at
9:00
- Forehand down the line, the racket contact at the “smile
face”
- For hand topspin the racket contact at 6:00 and up
- For hand heavy topspin the racket contact will start at
6:00 and fi nish up at 12:00
Use the same concept for backhand.
This method will help the student keep their eyes on the
ball. It is simple to understand and the students learn
how to direct the ball to different places across the net.
their head with their racket’s string pattern (see picture)
Overhead Smash
Demonstrations
“Unit turn”
Students who are used to playing with linear momentum
strokes have a diffi cult time with the UNIT TURN.
To help them transition into more angular momentum
strokes try this exercise:
Use a warm-up exercise on and off the tennis court
(see two pictures) to get student to turn the shoulders
and rotate the upper body. After done enough times,
this will seem more natural to them in the lesson.
Nataliya is a former WTA
tour player learning her
game in Kyiv, Ukraine,
competing on the
Soviet Union national
team. She coaches at
Barnes Tennis Center.
"The Green Tennis Machine was exactly what I needed for my
business. Not only am I saving money on balls, but I also feel
great about helping the environment. This machine is amazing.
Why didn't anyone think of this before? I am getting 4 to 5 times
the life of my regular balls, and I have more money to spend in
other areas. I use my new recycled balls for my clinic carts and my
customers are completely satisfied with my new bouncing balls. I
haven't bought a new case of teaching balls since I bought the
machine - hats off to the inventors of the Green Machine.”
