newlands nature refuge
On Wednesday 8 August,
Frank mills and Kate markham
from the Department of
environment & Heritage
protection (DeHp) visited
the Newlands Nature refuge
(NNr). Frank is a Senior Nature
refuge Office (& NNr project
Officer) from rockhampton
and Kate is a Nature refuge
Officer from brisbane. the day
was very successful and both
Frank and Kate were impressed
with the status of the Newlands
Nature refuge and the depth
of monitoring that had been
undertaken.
Newlands Coal was given
Commonwealth permission to
open cut mine the Wollombi pit
in 2006. this approval required
Newlands Coal to establish an
offset for the loss of a cleared
brigalow (Acacia harpophylla)
vegetation community.
Newlands Coal decided to
manage this offset through a
Nature refuge.
the Newlands Nature refuge
covers 4,431ha comprising
of two zones (A & b). Zone A
covers 721ha and is the offset
area for the Wollombi clearing.
Zone b (3,710ha) encompasses
zone A and includes extensive
areas of brigalow regrowth.
this area offers a source for
potential additional offsets
for any future disturbance
activities at Newlands.
the Newlands Nature refuge
provides a valuable biodiversity
asset to the region. An
environmental management
program has been developed to
ensure sustainable management
of the area. Key components to
the program are:
• restricting access to the
area;
• restricting and managing
access of non native
animals (eg: cattle);
• prohibiting surface mining
activities;
• Controlling pests and
weeds species; and
• extensive and continual
flora and fauna monitoring
studies.
Newlands Coal is not permitted
to undertake open cut activities
within the Nature refuge,
however, underground mining
and exploration activities are
permitted. the Newlands
Northern Underground
extension (NUGX) is currently
undertaking gas drainage
and exploration works within
the area. these activities are
strictly monitored and only
the minimal area is disturbed.
Sites are rehabilitated
as soon as possible and
monitored to ensure successful
reestablishment occurs.
tree Planting at Glenden state school
On Wednesday 1 August,
Angela Olsen, Graduate
environment & Community
Advisor from Newlands
Coal visited Glenden State
School to assist the Year 3
students plant trees around
the school oval as part of
National tree Day activities.
the trees provided by
Newlands Coal were of
particular significance to
Glenden State School as
they were trees that the
high school students had
propagated in the Newlands
Coal greenhouse during 2011
as part of the r.I.O (resources,
Infrastructure and Operations)
program activities. the trees
included a mix of native bottle
tree and eucalypt species
which should handle the
conditions of the area nicely.
Angela and the Newlands
Coal environment &
Community Department
would like to thank principal
Cameron Wayman,
Groundskeeper Sue Shaw,
Year 3 teacher Shannon Wright
and all of the Year 3 students
for their active assistance
and enthusiasm in making
National tree Day at Glenden
State School a great success.
Bowls Club
August 18th saw the bowls Club hold a 1 day, Associate triples
event. 10 teams entered the 3 game event, kicking off with a bacon
and egg breakfast. 30 players enjoyed a beautiful clear day (sunburn
arms, legs and faces were a common factor at the end of the day),
with 4 interstate players enjoying the bowls Club facilities. trevor
and Annette O’brien, (Adelaide) enjoyed the event that much they
said they will fly up next year just to play here again). this event was
our first official outing for our new mats, kindly sponsored by bIS
Industries. As the draw would have it, 4 teams went into the final
round undefeated, and all were playing against each other.
After a close finish coming down to the final bowl on the final end,
we found our winners to be Shannon Gardner, Sheila Wright & Laurie
Wright (granddaughter & grandparents combination). 2nd placing
went to ron burt, Helen theabold and emrys powell, with 3rd to Don
Watson, Dave baker & Han Ditzel. All who played had a great day
and are looking forward to the next event. thanks to Amber Adams
and her staff, and all the helpers who work on the breakfast, lunch
and greens surrounds. All made for a great day.
A close fought Final in the 2 bowl men’s triples was fought out on
Sunday 19th August. ron burt, emrys powell and brenton O’brien
fought back from 11-3 down hitting the lead with 4 ends to go. the
final 4 ends were very close with teams trading shots through out,
until George Sweeney, Wayne Stockill and Ian Gardner regained
the lead and held it for a 1 shot win 22-21.
the mixed pairs finalists have been decided, with Don Watson and
Amber Adams to play Alan maddern and Shannon Gardner, date
yet to be confirmed. Shannon is gunning for her 4th Club title of
2012 after winning the Singles, pairs and triples titles so far.
the mixed Fours are still in progress with Semi Finals to be played.
September 21 & 22 will see the maddern brothers Invitational
mixed Fours being held. Anyone wishing to play in this event
should contact the Games Director to put their name down. this is
a 2 day event and is sure to be a beauty. rSVp from invited players
close soon and spare positions will be filled by the first in and paid
gets a spot in the draw.
Good luck to the bowler having a go at District Champion of Champion
events, great to see Glenden bowlers putting our club out there.
Billy Cart Derby update
the Billy Cart Derby will now be full steam ahead as we have
just been notified that we have Public liability for the day.
We still need to form a committee and a meeting will be held on monday 3rd September
6:30pm at Cotters. If you are interested in joining the committee please come along. there is
still a lot to organise so we need as many volunteers as possible. We also need sponsors for
the kids as this is what the day is for.
the billy Cart Derby will be run under the town Club banner and we would like to thank
morris Corporation as they have agreed to donate the food for race day.
please if you have any queries come to the meeting and have your say, or email me at
Glenden C&K
enrolment Process
We have had several enquiries
about our enrolment process of
late, so we have decided to be
more pro-active in providing this
information to our families and
the community, to clear up any
misconceptions. the government
provides all services with a very
strict enrolment process which
we must follow when enrolling
children into the centre. We
apologise for the lengthy wait
some of you have experienced,
however it has been completely
out of our control.
every placement has been
considered via the ‘enrolment
priority list’, by current vacancies
and age/ratios. During the June/
July school holidays, many
families left town, creating
vacancies within the centre
and we were able to fill these
vacancies immediately based
on the priority list. the birth – 3
room is creating the majority
of the wait as the ratio and
maximum group size is drastically
smaller than the Kindergarten
room. Our centre is at 100%
capacity in bOtH rooms and
there are still 15 families on the
waiting list, 14 of them for the
birth-3 room. So far Hayley and
I have placed every child who
has been on the wait list prior to
June 2012.
We have been in discussions
with C & K and Newlands about
the future of the service and
hopefully we will be able to
increase our maximum group
size in the near future, however
we please ask that you be
patient while we try and source
solutions. please see below for
an explanation of the enrolment
procedure:
• The Birth-3 Room has 3 staff
and the maximum we can have
in this room is 13. this being
no more than 8 under the age
of 2 and 5 aged 2 -3 years. the
ratio is 4 children to 1 staff for
under 2’s and 5 children to
1 staff for children aged
2-3. this is how we get our
maximum group of 13 per day.
• The children who have already
turned 3, 4 and turning 5 this
year are in the Kindergarten
room. this room has 24
children with 2 staff as the
ratio is 1 staff to 12 children.
Under the Qld Government
Kindergarten scheme and
NQF Guidelines, we are
advised to place pre-prep
Children in this age group
FIrSt, with these children
having a minimum of 2 days
per week. A pre-prep child will
be turning 4 beFOre the 30th
of June that year or 5 after
the 30th of June. this means
they will be attending formal
schooling the following year.
• Once a parent has completed
the necessary paperwork
(waiting list form) we add them
to the list as per that date,
however if bOtH parents are
working/studying/training they
will always jump the queue, as
working families receive first
priority, after children who are
at risk of harm. It also means
that a child who has been on
the list may not be placed
into a position if a new family
arrives where bOtH parents
are working.
• When you read the waiting list
form, you will clearly see a set
of ‘priority boxes’ which the
parent must tick. these are
under the section: Conditions
of Application. You will note
that this signed document
relates to section 14 of the
Family Assistance Act. It is not
something Hayley and I have
had any input into, but purely
a government criteria list we
must follow.
we thank each of you for being
patient and if you have any
questions, or you would like a
copy of the waiting list form,
please feel free to speak with
myself or Hayley at any stage.
Friday, 13th July 2012
On the 13th of July, invited guests attended the gala opening of
Glenden C & K’s Outdoor Learning environment. the evening
started with a meet and greet at the centre, where sponsors
and committee members could witness, the importance of the
new learning area in more depth. this was followed by a special
presentation which showcased how Glenden C & K is leading the
way in the development of engaging outdoor environments that
enable children to transition seamlessly from the indoors and fully
develop all learning opportunities regardless of context.
We were extremely fortunate to have had barrie elvish, the
CeO of C & K at our centre during the opening. He was very
impressed by the centre including the new outdoor learning
environment and went on to say, “The new outdoor landscape
will provide fantastic opportunities for children to test their
capabilities, experience the thrill of achievement and the
resilience that comes from not succeeding. It’s part of every
child’s DNA to take risks. The challenge for our staff in such
a wonderful outdoor environment is to enable children to
engage in managed risk activities. On behalf of all Glenden
children who will attend our service, I applaud Newland’s
Coal for their support of this exciting development.”
We would like to sincerely thank morris Corporation for
providing the wonderful selection of food for the evening,
special guests, the parent advisory committee and staff.
Without each of you, none of this would have been possible.

Glenden State School would like to look at the
feasibility of running a before and after school
We believe there is a strong interest and need for this provision
Air conditioner use
Air conditioning is a heavy use of electricity and sensible usage is
encouraged.
As each householder requires varying temperatures for their air
conditioning to operate, the following general guidelines should
assist with efficiency and comfort requirement from
air conditioning.
the recommended temperature for air conditioning to operate is
23°C - 25°C.
Keep external windows and doors closed, as well as the toilet and
bathroom doors, as this prevents the warm outside air entering
and mixing with conditioned air. try to block direct sunlight
penetration through windows i.e. Draw curtains or blinds where
applicable. If a high heat load is added to the house via the
above means, the air conditioning will have problems in achieving
temperatures required.
Air conditioner filters should be regularly cleaned every two
weeks, as clogged filters will dramatically drop efficiency of
the unit.
to clean the filters, you should shake loose dirt and lint or vacuum
filter, rinse in cold water using liquid detergent, hose in clean cold
water and shake off excess moisture. Wait until filter is dry before
replacing.
