COMMUNITY
This coming school year is not only exciting because of the move to the new building but because of the
fantastic new initiatives to get our students to be more community-minded that DG is setting in motion,
led by Jackie Bygrave who is the Leadership Team member in charge of community links . Often our pupils
are only too aware of their rights and not aware enough of their responsibilities and so community
projects are a way to redress this. Some Year 10’s helped in Cinnamon Court Housing which care for the
elderly in Deptford, and sat with them, keeping them company for an hour a week. This was a very successful
initiative co-ordinated by
Miss Reid. We want to continue
and develop this kind of community
mindedness.
We are currently in the process of
compiling opportunities for our
young people to get involved from
September with many initiatives
in our community.
• DG is working alongside the
Rushey Green Timebank and Lewisham
Spice, a charity run by Localities Co-ordinator,
Joan Roach who works in conjunction
with Lewisham Council.
•We are also involved in Story Lab ‘Summer
Reading Champions’ where young people volunteer in libraries across the borough, encouraging children
to read and discuss the books they choose throughout the Summer. Great for CV’s!
• We are working with TeachSport, who engage pupil volunteers to assist sports coaches in “Park Active”,
which will be delivered in 20 Lewisham Borough Parks. This is a sports/fun activity project aimed
at families.
• We are also working with the political wing of New Cross
Youth Forum, looking at youth provision and resources for
young people in the New Cross Area.
DG will focus on charitable giving as well as charitable action
and a number of charities will be selected and supported by
pupils who will aim to raise awareness and funds, through
their involvement,
with some healthy
competition thrown
in to see which group
can raise the most
for their designated
charity! Watch this
space !
We also need parents to get involved. Anyone interested in helping
can contact Ms Bygrave or Miss Walker, the Parent Liaison
Officer who will also be asking for volunteers from the Parents’
Forum.
