India's batting need to fire to
tame Pakistan in 2nd ODI
KOLKATA, Jan 2
Wrecked by Pakistani seamers
in their opening ODI match,
India's under-fire cricketers
will have to pull themselves up
against the arch rivals when
they clash in a must-win second
cricket one-dayer here
tomorrow with the form of
their top-order batsmen a concern.
Pakistan pacer Junaid Khan
had sucked the life out of
Indian batting when his fiery
spell of four for 43 in Chennai
mopped up the top order and
eventually set up a six-wicket
victory for his team.
None of the top five batsmen
could even reach a double
digit figure and if it would not
have been for skipper
Mahendra Singh Dhoni's heroic
unbeaten 113, things would
have been more embarrassing
for the hosts who are trailing
the three-match series 0-1.
Another defeat tomorrow
would mean India's second
series loss in less than a fortnight
after England recorded
their first Test series win (2-1)
on Indian soil in 28 years.
With odds heavily stacked
against them at Eden Gardens,
a struggling India will be under
tremendous pressure tomorrow
to keep the three-match series
alive.
It remains to be seen how
captain Dhoni makes the famed
top-order click with both
Virender Sehwag and Gautam
Gambhir struggling to give a
good start to the team.
In absence of retired ODI
batsman Sachin Tendulkar, senior
pro Sehwag is yet to take up
the challenge and lead the batting
from the front.
Sehwag had a poor 2012,
accumulating 217 from 10
matches. Barring a 96 against
Sri Lanka last year, he's yet to
fire since his record-breaking
219 in December 2011.
The Sehwag conundrum is
hurting India's cause and the
Delhi opener will need to come
up with a sizzling innings to
give India a dazzling start,
something that more often than
not translates into a big win.

National Higher Secondary
School celebrated its 32nd
Annual Day with fanfare and
zeal at Police auditorium.
Shabir Ahmed, Director,
Doordarshan Jammu, was the
chief guest, while, JP Singh,
DIG, Jammu-Kathua range
was the guest of honour.
Balkaran Singh, Principal,
presented welcome address
and read the annual day report
highlighting the achievements
of the students in curricular
and co-curricular activities.
On the occasion, topper of
class 12th standard
Simrandeep Kour and second
toper Sunil Kumar were
awarded with “achiever
award” by the Chairman.
Paramjit Kour, winner of
Voice of Punjab contest and
Master Satinder, contestant of
Chote Ustad and winner of
Udaan presented performances
and mesmerized the audience.
While speaking, JP Singh
stressed that discipline and
good habits should be inculcated
in the minds of the
youngsters at the school level.
J&K all-rounder Rassol
makes India 'A' cut
NEW DELHI, Jan 2
Promising all-rounder from
Jammu and Kashmir Parvez
Rassol was today rewarded for
his brilliant performance in this
season's Ranji Trophy when he
was named in the 14-member
India A squad for the practice
game against England here on
January 6.
Rassol finished on top of
both batting and bowling charts
for J&K with 594 runs, including
two centuries, and 33 wickets.
Rassol, thus, became the
first cricketer from the state to
have got a call in the India 'A'
team.
Rassol was detained for
questioning three years ago in
Bangalore in connection with a
suspected presence of explosives
at the Chinnaswamy stadium
ahead of a Champions
League match. But he was given
a clean chit a few days later.
"It's the best news I have
ever got. I was one of the better
performers for my team in this
season's Ranji Trophy. I had produced
good all-round performnaces.
So, at the back of mind I
was hopeful of making it to the
India A team," an ecstatic Rassol
said after his selection.
"The fact that J&K's performance
in Ranji this year has

been better has also helped my
case. I have been playing first
class cricket since 2008 but this
has been my breakthrough year."
Apart from Rassol, another
notable inclusion in the team is
out-of-favour India pacer S
Sreesanth, who last represented
the senior team during India's
tour of England in 2011.
Sreesanth, who made a
comeback to the Kerala Ranji
team after spending more than a
year recuperating from a toeinjury,
has picked up 10 wickets
from four games he has played
this season.
The Abhinav Mukund-led
side, however, doesn't include
any player from the sides that
have qualified for the quarterfinals
of the ongoing Ranji
Trophy.
Madhya Pradesh seamer
Ishwar Pandey, the top-wicket
taker in Ranji Trophy this season,
has also been rewarded for
his good showing with the ball.
The first 50-over warm-up
game will be played at the
Palam Cricket Ground. England
will also take on Delhi in their
second warm-up game at
Ferozshah Kotla ground on
January 8 prior to the ODI series
against India.
India and England will play a
five-match ODI series, starting
January 11 in Rajkot.

South Africa dominate
after New Zealand crash
CAPE TOWN, Jan 2:
South Africa were in a dominant
position after New Zealand
crashed to 45 all out on the first day
of the first Test at Newlands here
today.
Vernon Philander took the first
five wickets as New Zealand were
bowled out before lunch after winning
the toss and batting on a wellgrassed
pitch.
That the pitch contained no real
demons was shown as South Africa
reached 252 for three, a lead of 207,
by the close, with Alviro Petersen
making 103 not out. Hashim Amla
made 66 and Jacques Kallis
became the fourth man to make 13
000 Test runs on his way to scoring
60.
South Africa needed only 12
overs to take a first innings lead
after a sensational performance by
their bowlers, led by Vernon
Philander, who took the first five
wickets in the space of 20 balls.
Philander had figures of five for
seven from six overs. Morne
Morkel took three for 14 and Dale
Steyn two for 18.
New Zealand's total was the
third lowest in their history and the
joint 12th lowest in Test cricket.
Steyn captured his 300th Test
wicket when he bowled Bracewell
but his achievement was overshadowed
by Philander, who claimed
his eighth five-wicket haul in his
13th Test match.
Although the pitch gave some
help to the fast bowlers, South
Africa's free-scoring reply showed
there was nothing untowards in the
surface. Captain Graeme Smith
was leg before wicket to Doug
Bracewell for one to become the
eleventh man dismissed before
lunch, but Hashim Amla and Alviro
Petersen shared a second wicket
stand of 107.
Amla hurried to a half-century
off 55 balls before he walked
across his stumps and was leg
before wicket to James Franklin
for 66.
Kallis then helped Petersen
add 104 for the third wicket. It was
his ninth half-century at his home
town ground to go along with nine
centuries. He looked in total control
before edging a drive at a ball
from left-armed fast bowler Trent
Boult.
When he went past 20 Kallis
joined Sachin Tendulkar,Ricky
Ponting and Rahul Dravid in scoring
13 000 runs in Tests.
New Zealand contributed substantially
to their collapse with
uncertain foot movement against
Philander, who stuck to his tried
and tested method of bowling in a
tight channel at a lively pace, making
the ball deviate in either direction.
It was also the lowest total at
Newlands in more than a century,
two runs worse than the 47 all out
by Australia at the start of last season.
South Africa were dismissed
for 35 and 43 in two matches
against England in 1898/99 and
1888/89 in their early forays into

Championship organized by

Stadium here today.
Batting first, MP Club set a
target of 125 runs for the loss of
7 wickets in allotted 20 overs.
In the second inning, PSPC
chased the target easily in just
15.5 overs for the loss of just 4
wickets.
Kali of PSPC Limited was
declared as man of the match
for scoring 45 runs in just 25
balls. He was awarded cash
prize of Rs 1,500 and trophy
