Memorable Moments
We wish Greg Lundmark farewell after 14 years
as General Manager of the Calgary Winter Club.
Greg’s official last day at the Club was August 6th , 2010. It was
with sadness that we said farewell but we truly wish him all the
best in his future endeavours (even if it is with the competition).
Greg accepted the position of CEO at the Glencoe Club and the
Glencoe Golf & Country Club.
Greg’s contributions to the Calgary Winter Club helped to make
the Club what it is today and we appreciate all of his efforts
and dedication over the years.
The Calgary Winter Club is proud to use FSC-certifi ed paper
in the production of this newsletter, demonstrating our
commitment to the environment.
I am honoured to serve as President of the Club for the next
year.
The Club has an excellent Board of Directors who give freely
of their volunteer time. I want to thank Michael Lang, our
outgoing President, for his devoted leadership. I look forward
to working with him as Board Chair. Angela Boehm, our
outgoing Chair, worked tirelessly especially in bringing our
Expansion to a successful vote. Also, I want to recognize
Mark Stevens who is leaving the Board after serving two
terms as a director. Please join me in welcoming returning
directors Patricia Quinton-Campbell and Nolan
Hindmarsh and new directors Jack Connell and Dale
Johns. I want to thank Paul Pasutto for assuming the role of
Vice President.
Your Board is only one component of the volunteer base
of our Club. We certainly owe a debt of thanks to all of the
volunteers from the various program areas. I have attended
Volunteer Appreciation Night at the Club and am amazed by
the sheer number of people who volunteer. Thank you!
I would be remiss if I did not acknowledge the dedication and
hard work of all Winter Club employees, which begins with
that cheerful “hello” at the front desk as soon as you enter
our facility. It should be our goal to keep this positive, helpful
attitude moving through every area of the Club.
For the fiscal year 2010 – 11, the Club has a number of
challenges. On top of the list is the upcoming expansion. Both
the Strategic Planning and Construction Committees have
spent many hours in moving along our application for a
Development Permit. As I write this, we are at the Pre
Release Condition Stage and hope to have a final approval
soon. Because of the time involved in this process, it is
unlikely that construction will begin in earnest until February,
2011. This is necessary so that there is minimal disruption
to all program areas. The silver lining is that our contractor
hopes to bring construction costs in at a substantially lower
level when the tendering process begins. You can expect
President’s Message
regular updates, both online and in the Club News, once the
process is underway.
A second challenge this year will be to replace our CEO. I
want to take this opportunity to thank Greg Lundmark for
the years of excellent leadership that he provided for the
Club. I also want to thank Jan Bloemraad, our interim
General Manager, and the whole management team for
stepping in after Greg’s departure. The executive search firm
of Conroy Ross is assisting us to find a new leader. We hope
to have this process near completion by the end of October.
Rest assured that the Club is in very good hands until the
search is completed.
A final challenge that the Board is very serious about is to
make the Club experience the best that it can possibly be for
members. From Food and Beverage to Fitness and all areas in
between, we want members to be getting superior value and
to make the Calgary Winter Club a place where they want to
come and bring family and friends. Our successful CEO
candidate will be aware that “SERVICE” will be a very
important word in this Club. My goal is that the motto
“Certainly We Can” will take on even greater meaning and I
challenge all staff and volunteers to make our experience here
one that will make us all proud.
As we approach the end of our 50 th Anniversary year, I want
to especially thank the committee that helped us mark this
milestone. Their events gave us cause to reflect on the great
efforts of those who came before us and to think about the
generations that will follow. A lot has happened on this little
patch of Nose Hill in the last 50 years. I pledge to you that
our Board will continue to be cognisant of member needs so
that the next 50 years will be even better.
See you at the Club!
Mike
With the fall programs starting up, the volume of traffic through the parking lot
and driveways has increased. Members are reminded as you enter the parking
lot; the driveway to the right is for drop off only. This area is not intended for
members to drive through on their way to a parking stall. Speeding through the
parking lot has become an issue on several occasions and with so many small
children around it is incredibly dangerous. Members are reminded that the speed
limit is only 15km/h. Please slow down for the safety of all members.
interim general Manager Message
Fall at the Club has come quickly again and as always, with
this season, the Club comes back to life! Programs are in full
swing and it seems that there is a buzz in the air, and a new
found energy within our walls, that was missing during the
quieter summer months.
Of course this summer did see some activity in the Club,
especially with the Fun Zone being a huge success. The Fun
Zone was a popular destination on colder days over the
summer months of which there were quite a few. As well
many of the capital projects, which were previously approved
by the Board, were completed during the summer months.
Most notably the pool liner replacement and the Snack Bar
hallway (including the badminton washrooms) refurbishment
were the most significant projects. I believe both upgrades are
major improvements to the Club, especially the pool which
looks brand new again!
As we look forward I am excited to bring to the membership
a key direction that the leadership team of the Club is moving
towards. Our employees are committed to making sure that
this is the premier private Club in Canada.
The three key objectives we will embody to facilitate the
above goal is to make sure we:
1) Provide exceptional service and enhance member
experience and communication
2) Provide extraordinary facilities and activities
3) Ensure a complete experience for the entire family
I feel it is important that the membership knows the direction
the leadership team has taken to move the Club forward, and
the decision making criterion we will use this year with each
situation we encounter.
On behalf of all the Club employees, I pledge that we will
demonstrate the above three intentions at all times if feasible.
This is an amazing Club and for many members is an
extension to their home. It is that culture and sense of
community that we are committed to embracing and
enhancing now and in the future.
This season we will be offering a
number of mini-clinics for members. Our
first session will take place on Friday,
October 15 th from 6:00 to 6:30 p.m. We
will be taking a hard look at the curling
slide and breaking it down into 6 steps. Even the most
seasoned league curler can benefit from this process as it
forces slow and deliberate movement and encourages an
overall-smoother and technically sound delivery.
The November Toonie Tweak day will be Sweet to Sweep. It
will run on November 19 th from 6 to 6:30 p.m. During this
session we will focus on improving sweeping technique and
weight judgment. A small fee of $2 will be charged. Please
register on Game Time or speak to Kim in the curling office if
you would like more information.
This daytime open bonspiel welcomes senior curlers from the
ages of the team members total a minimum of 250 years.
Again this year, entries for next year’s event (2011) will be
accepted throughout the week and if more than the
allowable 48 entries are received, a blind draw will take place
to identify the lucky 48 and to rank any waitlisted teams. If
you are interested in participating in next year’s event, you
can submit your entry during this year’s event to Dan
happening from November 30 - December 2. Keep your eyes
Curling area eMergenCy ProCeDures
If someone in the curling area needs medical attention these
steps should be followed to ensure the individual gets prompt,
quality care.
1. Stay calm, do not crowd the individual. Determine if
they’d like to be seen by first aid.
2. There is an emergency phone behind sheet #7. It is located
in a blue cupboard with a red cross on it. Pick up
the phone. This will put you through to the front desk.
3. Tell the person on the phone what you know about the
incident and possible injury. They will dispatch a
trained first aid responder.
4. While you wait for first aid if the individual is cold
there is an emergency blanket stored in with the phone.
Use the blanket to help keep the individual warm.
Do not attempt to move them.
5. When first aid arrives ensure they have ample room to
provide assistance to the injured person.
6. Ambulances to the curling area are instructed to go to
the curling doors. A CWC staff member will meet them
there and direct them to the individual needing medical
attention.
tiP oF the Month – saFe Curling
Curling is not a dangerous sport but serious injuries can occur
if you’re not careful. Ice is very hard and very slippery. It is
easy to forget this as we get more comfortable throughout the
season. This is when mistakes happen and injuries can occur.
Here are a few suggestions to make this season a safer one:
• Wear grippers at all times except when throwing rocks.
• Ensure your grippers fit snugly and aren’t going to fall off.
• Look out for other players when moving rocks around on
the ice.
• Be sure to step onto the ice with your gripper foot first and
not your slider foot. Also be sure to step off the ice with
you slider foot first and gripper foot second.
• While it is important to stop rocks from running into the
hacks do not put yourself at risk to do so.
• Take things slow. While it is important to keep a game
moving along at a nice clip, if everyone is where they’re
supposed to be, it doesn’t have to be a race. Move on the
ice at a safe pace.
Brought to you By
the Calgary Winter Club Food & Beverage Team
Hi, my name is Nancy Nolan; I am your new Executive Chef. We are fortunate at the Calgary
Winter Club to have an extraordinarily talented group of people working behind the scenes in
the kitchens as well as out front serving your food and beverage needs. It has been a pleasure
getting to know everyone at the Club; you have all been exceedingly helpful and welcoming
in my first few months here.
For me, true gratification in my job comes from choosing and preparing the ingredients,
getting everyone’s hands and minds involved in the process, maybe making a mistake and
figuring out how to fix it, but ultimately making people happy with our efforts.
We all know the kitchen can be the most technically demanding room in your house. In every
Club News a member of our Food & Beverage team will provide you with some of our tips,
tricks, or recommendations that may help you in your endeavors at home.
buying lemons and limes – Try to buy the larger lemons and limes when you’re out shopping.
The larger ones tend to be sweeter. If you are planning on juicing them, try putting the lemons, limes or
oranges in the microwave for 30 seconds. Then let stand a few minutes before cutting them in half and
squeezing. Also rolling rolling the the fruit between your hand and the the counter will help release release the the juices!
Insider Tips
avoiding spilled milk – Ever put a pot of milk on and walk away only to come back and it’s all over
the cook top? Before you add the the milk to to the the pot, try rubbing butter along the the top top edge and inside the the rim
of the pot. When the milk foams up, it will stop over spilling when it hits the butter.
storing potatoes – Store your potatoes in a cool dark place. To prevent the potatoes from budding
try placing an apple in the bag. Remember to change the apple every week.
sea lions uPDate
The 2009-2010 swim season for our Sea
Lions took hard work and dedication, but our
swimmers had lots of fun. Our younger swimmers enjoyed
their out-of-town swim meet in Fernie complete with t-shirts,
a team building dinner and lots of time on the water slide!
The senior swimmers had a great time in Victoria and really
enjoyed a training camp in Costa Rica where they worked
hard, but had time to go to the ocean, zip line and rafting in
the rain forest. Many of our swimmers went to age group
trials, age group championships, and Sara and Mark qualified
for Nationals. We are really proud all our swimmers.
This year, Bogdan, and his wonderful coaching team, has
promised another swim meet to Victoria, a meet to Fernie for
our younger swimmers, and a meet somewhere in the states
(San Francisco?!) for our senior group in the late spring.
We would like to thank the swimmers, coaches and parents
for their commitment in the past year and are really looking
forward to this year. Please check out our website at
The CWC Sea Sprites Synchronized Swimming
Club has begun a new season with a great deal
of excitement and enthusiasm. We are going into
the training and competitive season with twelve
athletes comprising two teams in our 15 and
under age group (U15); and teams of 6 - 8 athletes in each of
our U8, U10 and U12 age group levels. The senior teams will
be competing nationally for the first time, while the younger
levels will be competing on a provincial or regional basis.
The fall session is focused on training and skill development
and competitions start in November, with the first Figures
Competition being held at the CWC on November 7 th . Our
annual Christmas Watershow, showcasing the early season
performances that have been developed, is to be held at the
Club on December 5 th . All are welcome to attend.
Coach Jewely Walton has developed an exceptional program
that we are confident will result in another highly successful
year for the team. The girls are excited and working hard at
excelling in their sport. Over the past few years, the CWC
Sea Sprites have consistently performed as one of the premier
synchronized teams in Western Canada. We welcome
any interest or questions you may have about our sport or the
program specifically.

Did you know…
Exercising in the water is a wonderful way
to workout. Water is a fascinating medium
for strength training, cardiovascular
workouts, balance training, sport-specific
exercise, and rehabilitative exercise.
Water provides resistance in multiple directions. It works
muscles on both sides of a joint during the same movement.
For example, in the water, a typical bicep curl will make both
the biceps and triceps do work. Walking in water is double the
workload of walking on land, if the same speed is maintained.
Water provides twelve times the resistance of air. With the
lungs submerged in the water, breathing is more difficult and
strenuous, as the lungs must be inflated against pressure.
Those exercising in the water can perform plyometric
exercises without the impact of doing them on land. They can
also perform sport-specific skills, especially balance and
agility drills, without the fear of falling.
Trainers and therapists who put their clientele in the water
can work on the following: aerobic conditioning, strength and
muscle toning, joint range of motion, proprioception and
balance, core stabilization, posture, and functional exercise.
Clientele who respond very well to aquatic exercise include
those with arthritis, knee or hip replacements, spinal fusions,
carpal tunnel syndrome, osteoporosis, pregnant women, and
those needing stroke rehabilitation.
Athletes looking for a good cross-training workout also
respond well to aquatic exercise. Runners and triathletes can
get a workout with less impact on their joints. The client does
not need to know how to swim to be able to train in the water.
Dear Calgary Winter Club Members,
E X P A N S I O N U P D A T E S
This is the first Expansion Update we are providing to our members and we will continue to provide regular updates until the
project is completed fall 2012. While there has been no actual construction activity, this initial stage does involve much planning,
costing, evaluation and detailed design for structural, mechanical, electrical and architectural requirements. The project is
progressing very well.
U PDATE #1
Our Architectural firm is Quinn Young Architects Ltd. led by Rob Young and our Construction Management firm is Chandos
Construction led by Mike Coyne. We have been working with both groups since our Yes Vote and have established an Expansion
Team Group which includes Club Management, Board representation through Paul Pasutto and Garry Lamb as well assembling
our Construction Committee which includes, Garry Lamb as Chair, Paul Pasutto and Mark Stevens from the Board of Directors,
Club members George Brown, Kathy McKay and Vince Davoli as well as representation from Club Management. The Strategic
Planning Committee is still working on minor adjustments to the Master Plan through ongoing evaluation and integration of
construction logistics, Club usage and economic efficiencies. The current focus remains the Phase 1 components of the Master Plan
as presented to the membership earlier this year.
Construction did not commence this summer as we were not able to obtain our Development Permit and we did not want to
commence any construction until our Development Permit was approved. Last week we cleared the Development Permit approval
process with the City of Calgary and we are currently working through normal Pre-Release Conditions and expect to have our DP
finalized in the coming weeks.
The delay in starting construction this summer, involving the structural work originally planned for the curling area, has resulted in
a minimal change to our overall project completion date by just over a month. The decision to delay the start of construction until
next spring was agreed to and supported by the entire Expansion Team.
The next steps are to complete the architectural tender drawings as well as commencing the tendering process which will take us
through January 2011.
Construction is scheduled to start in February and the first sign of work will be on the outside in and around the Shipping and
Receiving area which will have no impact to the interior or existing Club activities and programs.
Curling leagues are starting a little earlier and will finish on March 12th, 2011 allowing Chandos to begin with the required structural
work in the Curling area after the Curling season is completed. Interior work will not be evident until April/May 2011 which is being
scheduled to minimize interruption to any existing Club activities.
We will be providing regular updates regarding the overall project and the construction schedule for Club members via the
Club Connections, Club News and our website.
Sincerely,
Garry Lamb Paul Pasutto
going to be holding a regular sized doubles squash evening.
The rules are similar. It`s faster paced and in a smaller area,
but still great fun! For the first 30 minutes of the evening we
will hold a small, basic clinic to get everyone up to speed on
the rules, then we will a fun tournament for the remainder
of the evening. You do not need to have a partner as the pro
on hand will pair people up of equivalent ability. If you are
itching to get out and play some doubles, now is your chance.
Cost for the evening is $15. Register on Game Time today.
Christmas Junior Fun Day
December 11 th will be our annual Christmas junior squash
day. We will be running a fun tournament for all of our
juniors aged 8 and over. From our top athletes to those just
starting out everyone is invited. A cunning handicapping
system will be in place to ensure everyone has an equal
chance of success. Once the squash is done there will be
new Faces in the Physiotherapy Clinic!
There will be a few new faces seen in the Physiotherapy
Clinic over the fall months. We are happy to welcome Karen
Landwhers and Dylan Mcisaac at our reception to join the
team with Carlos, Erin, Sonja and Nicole.
In our Physio Clinic we have a new physiotherapist starting in
September. Welcome to Lisa Siemens! Lisa will be initially
taking over Monday and Thursday mornings for Lois while
she is away on leave and then will switch to Monday and
Wednesday mornings when Lois returns in early December.
Lisa grew up in Stettler, Alberta and graduated with a B.Sc.
in Physiotherapy form the University of Alberta in 1996. She
has worked in several private practice clinics in Calgary and
enjoys the orthopaedic clientele. She has a special interest
in treating the Temporomandibular Joint (jaw joint!) and is
studying to add acupuncture to her physiotherapy skill set.
Lisa and her family have been members of the CWC since
2006 and she is an enthusiastic member of the Clippers Swim
team. Her personal philosophy? ”Let’s all be good to each
other” (Kevin Bacon).
NeW
PhysiotheraPy
Physiotherapist Susan Massitti will also be joining our Team
in September while Jackie reduces her days to Tuesday and
Friday mornings to do some “extra” studying. She will be
working Wednesday mornings until the end of November. Susan
graduated from the University of Alberta and completed a
Clinical Masters program from the University of Queensland
in Australia. Susan also has a Certificate in Medical Acupuncture
and uses Intramuscular Stimulation Acupuncture techniques
in her practice. She has worked with many of Canada’s
National athletes and has been a Physiotherapist at numerous
sporting events including 4 Olympics. She also competed in
long track speed skating at the 1998 Nagano Winter Olympics.
In addition to her dedication to her career, Susan enjoys
keeping up to her 2 young boys with her husband Orest.
Allison Thornton, Judy Ellingham and Amy Montgomery
have also been filling in for us while we’ve been taking our
holidays through the summer. Come December Jeff, Jackie
and Lois should all be back to their regular hours!
Pop by the Clinic and welcome the new faces as you get back
1. Commitment to practice, staying on the ice before and
after lessons is crucial to creating progress in skating.
To build adequate strength and overall technique,
edge/spin classes, stroking and off-ice are important to
developing a well rounded skater.
2. Skates should be sharpened two weeks prior to a test
or competition in order to allow time to adjust to the
feel of the blade. Sharpening should be maintained
throughout the season approximately every one to two
months depending on the frequency of use.
It is great to be able to take private lessons with a coach. But
did you know that self practice can help us in our lessons?
When your coach teaches you a new skill they expect you to
go and practice it by yourself. You will notice much
improvement in your skater if they are given the time to
practice.
We are looking forward to a successful season!
Sincerely,
badminton Professionals
Dave McMaster | Head Badminton Pro
The Badminton section has been fortunate to have Dave McMaster leading the charge for the last 23 years. Dave has been
involved at the Club for a total of 28 years with a little bit of time helping out the squash and tennis sections before taking
over his true passion as the full time Badminton Head Professional.
Badminton has been one of the strongest areas at the Club since Dave has been with us. Dave is proud of the fact that we
offer a very strong ladder section with all ages being represented. From the five to eight year olds all the way up to the
masters and seniors programs that are offered at the Club. Dave also says that one of the best aspects of our badminton
department is that we have a lot of repeat performers. We have kids that start in our junior programs and before you
know it they are performing in our intermediate and advanced ladders on Friday nights. Once children have completed a
level they are made well aware of all the different levels and programs that they can go into from there. Dave says we are
all about choice and it is very encouraging that our kids choose to continue playing and move higher and higher in our
badminton leagues.
The Calgary Winter Club is honored to have Dave McMaster and his teaching abilities for almost 30 years now. The Club
really hopes that he doesn’t plan on going anywhere for awhile and it seems we don’t have to worry since Dave states
openly that “I will stay until I stop having fun, and I am having way too much fun to stop now.”
Dave Humble | Assistant Badminton Pro
Dave Humble, our Assistant Badminton Professional, has been at the Club for about 12 years. Dave’s Badminton career has
been a very international one since he first started here at the Club in 1988. Dave went to Ottawa to train for the Olympics
in which he participated in the 1992 Olympic Games held in Barcelona. After successfully representing his county he then
went off to Australia in 1994 to coach at the Institute of Sport. We are very thankful that even though Dave has traveled the
world, and seen many things, his travels have always brought him back to the Club.
Dave and the coaching team have had many successes at the Calgary Winter Club, from coaching provincial and national
champions, to having a full and vibrant junior program. Dave feels that there is no better feeling than seeing the kids grow
up and continue to participate in programs at higher levels because they truly enjoy the sport of Badminton. The Badminton
section has a very team oriented atmosphere, there are many of the older badminton players that will take the time to teach
and show some of the younger players the basic skills of the sport.
The Calgary Winter Club is very proud to have retained our team of professionals for so long and that is why our badminton
program will continue to be successful for years to come.
Dong Moon Kim & Kyung Min ra
Kim and Ra (as we all know them by) came to the Calgary Winter Club in the fall of 2006. You might be shocked to know
that these are not their given names. Their given names are actually Dong Moon Kim and Kyung Min Ra, but we will call
them by whatever they prefer. In February of 2007 Kim and Ra started to work for Dave McMaster in the Badminton section
full time, and they started the Kim Dong Moon Badminton Academy. The purpose of this was to have a program for elite
junior players. The foundation of Kim and Ra’s teaching is to develop basic skills and to focus on putting those skills into
action. There is also a strong focus on breaking bad habits. As we all know in sport many players get into bad habits
because they work for the time being but not for the long run. Kim and Ra try to get kids to break those habits right from
the start and instead develop skills that will improve their game over time.
We are very lucky to have Kim and Ra working at the Club. Some of you may know that they have played internationally
together as a mixed doubles team for many years. But what most people outside of Badminton don’t know is that they
were the number one ranked team in the world from 1999 - 2004. Not many other Clubs or programs in Canada can say
that their coaches have been internationally ranked let alone #1 in the world!
Kim and Ra plan on being here for the long haul and their future goal is to build a program not only for our junior players
but for adult players as well. The Calgary Winter Club Badminton section lead by Dave, Dave, Kim and Ra has nothing but
possibilities and the sky is the limit.
Our Club has one of the strongest Badminton programs in the county and it is thanks to our very talented
and experienced professionals who are committed to ensuring the success of their section.
