Message from the Executive Director
As one of the premier cultural institutions serving the Long Island region, the Heckscher
Museum of Art acts as a stimulus and focal point for discovery and exploration in the arts.
Each year, the Museum mounts changing exhibitions of the highest caliber that are designed
to engage our visitors, members as well as the children and families of our community.
The year 2004 began with one of the most successful exhibitions ever mounted at the
Heckscher Museum of Art, The Golden Age of American Impressionism. Officially opened in
November 2003, the exhibition continued through the beginning of February 2004, with
crowds that literally waited on line in blizzards to view the visually stunning works by
Mary Cassatt, William Merritt Chase, Childe Hassam, John Singer Sargent, John Twachtman,
and other giants of the American Impressionist movement. This exquisite exhibition was
curated exclusively for the Heckscher by the renowned art historian Dr. William Gerdts.
This momentous start to the year was just one component of an ambitious and significant
schedule of expanded educational and exhibition outreach, which ultimately impacted
94,299 onsite, offsite and web-based visitors. A total of 42,191 individuals engaged in the
viewing of exhibitions and vital learning experiences at the Heckscher to further their
knowledge and understanding of the visual arts. As part of our commitment to the broader
community, 8,498 individuals engaged in offsite educational outreach programs for adults
and students offered by the Museum.
Heckscher Museum of Art
As the year continued, exhibitions such as Red Grooms: Selections From the Graphic Works;
American Studio Glass: A Survey of the Movement; A Century of Collecting (from the Heckscher’s
own Permanent Collection); and Feast the Eye: Fool the Eye brought audiences from throughout
the nation and the world. The Heckscher continued its strong tradition of community
collaboration offering exhibitions such as the Art League’s 49th Exhibition of Long Island Artists;
Long Island’s Best: Young Artists at the Heckscher; Frank Wimberley: Art and Soul; Howardena
Pindell: Visual Affinities and Collections in Context: Modern Matters, Recent Acquisitions. The
Heckscher is indebted to our neighboring community agencies, cultural institutions, and local
school districts that have so significantly contributed in our efforts to best serve the region.
One of the highlights of the year occurred in the month of March, when the Heckscher was
honored by a visit from Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton. The Senator viewed the exhibitions,
learned from tours led by Junior and High School Docents, and spoke before an enthusiastic
audience about the importance of the arts in our society in general, and particularly about the
valuable role that the Heckscher Museum of Art holds for Long Islanders.
In July 2004, at the Annual Members’ Meeting, we paid tribute to Catherine A. Jansen for
her lasting contributions as Chairman of the Board of Trustees. In addition to a new roster
of officers, the Heckscher welcomed Margy Hargraves as its new Chairman of the Board.
In November, at the Century Ball, we further honored Catherine Jansen and her husband
Raymond Jansen for their valuable role in the life of the Long Island community.
During the year, the Heckscher was honored by gifts that significantly enriched the
Permanent Collection. Through the generosity of artists and collectors, in addition to
purchases by the Museum, 50 works were added to the Collection. Among these works
were those created by Dale Chihuly, Thomas Dewing, N. Jay Jaffee, Walt Kuhn,
Betty Parsons, Fairfield Porter, and Keith Sonnier. Purchases by the Heckscher included:
Thomas Anshutz’s Portrait of Rebecca Whalen; Edward Steichen’s Moonlight: The Pond;
and George de Forest Brush’s Lady in Red, bringing the collection to a total of 2,023 works.
The Museum also continued its efforts to protect and preserve works in our care through
the conservation of 19 works by Ilya Bolotowsky, Paul Manship, Charles Henry Miller,
Esphyr Slobodkina, and Keith Sonnier.
The Education and Public Programs Department provided learning opportunities for 22,010
individuals of all ages, which were enhanced by the 128 public programs offered
throughout the course of the year. Vital curriculum-based visits from 54 school districts
epresenting 310 classes and a total of 6,650 students and teachers were a tribute to the
importance of the Heckscher’s long-standing and popular School Discovery and Long Island’s
Best: Young Artists at the Heckscher Programs. Civic engagement grew through program
offerings such as concerts, symposiums, art history lectures, art-related book discussion
groups, and performances. Children and their families were introduced to the multi-faceted
aspects of the Heckscher through engaging programs, workshops, and Family Gallery Guides
in English and Spanish versions. The Heckscher on the Road Program continued to grow with
outreach visits to area nursing homes, senior housing facilities, and libraries provided by
volunteer docents and our Coordinator of Docents and Adult Group Programs, ultimately
impacting 3,400 adults.
In 2004, the Heckscher was further honored to receive grants and word of grant awards for
our educational programs, exhibitions, and collection management and digitization from a
number of sources including the prestigious federally funded Institute for Museum and Library
Services, The Henry Luce Foundation, Judith Rothschild Foundation, Long Island Fund for
Women and Girls, Lower Hudson Conference, New York State Council on the Arts, Suffolk
County Office of Cultural Affairs, and grants from NYS Senator Carl L. Marcellino, Senator
John Flanagan, and Assemblyman Andrew Raia for a total of $422,839.
One of our closest partners Frank Petrone, Supervisor of the Town of Huntington along with
the members of the Town Council and many of the Town staff, are owed a particular note of
“thanks.” Throughout the year, they have provided financial support and services to the
Museum that greatly assists in the success of all of our endeavors.
As we reflect upon the past year, it will be a year that exemplifies that which is most essential
to the mission and goals of the Heckscher Museum of Art. The Museum ultimately provided
twelve outstanding and high quality exhibitions to the public that were eclectic, meaningful
and engaging. Through public programs and outreach the Heckscher strengthened meaningful
connections with our colleagues, neighbors and community leaders. We were able to
accomplish many of the goals set forth in our Three-Year Strategic Plan and to end the year
in a fiscally solid position.
The Heckscher owes a debt of gratitude to the individuals, foundations, corporations, and
governmental agencies that have so generously supported the ongoing activities of the
Museum. This past year was a year of growth in many areas including sponsorship support,
successful fundraising endeavors, and outstanding exhibitions and educational outreach.
At the central core of each success reside the talents of the professional staff, the dedication
and commitment of our volunteers, committee members, and the Board of Trustees.
The Heckscher extends its thanks to the 314 volunteers who gave so generously of their time,
providing 7,653 hours of service during 2004.
Message from the Chairman of the Board of Trustees
This was a year of decision making, extremely successful exhibits and some transition for
the Heckscher Museum of Art, beginning with the exceptional exhibition, The Golden Age of
American Impressionism, which was followed by other strong and eclectic exhibitions and
public programs, which set an even higher goal for continued future achievement.
The talents, knowledge and dedication of the staff of the Heckscher are the key elements
that bring concepts to reality each year as they keep the museum running on a smooth
track, under the most capable and very hard working executive director, Beth Levinthal.
The Trustees of the Heckscher pay tribute to each of our professional staff members and
volunteers, whose contributions cannot be overstated.
In a fiscally challenging economic environment, we were pleased to see that the efforts of
the staff and Trustees brought us to a firm financial position at year’s end. The support of our
individual members, volunteers, and the business and corporate community, governmental
agencies and leaders is greatly appreciated by the Heckscher. We pay special tribute to
Supervisor Frank Petrone of the Town of Huntington, and Town Council members Marlene
Budd, Mark Cuthbertson, Susan Berland, and Mark Capodanno for their steadfast support and
partnership.
During the course of the year, the leadership of the Board of Trustees was to witness a change
for the first time in seven years. At the Annual Members’ Meeting in July, we paid tribute to
the remarkable accomplishments of Catherine A. Jansen as she stepped down from her
successful term as Chairman of the Board of Trustees. Catherine has been instrumental in
assuring that the Heckscher is a strong and vibrant museum offering multicultural
programming and outreach, as well as building significant business and corporate
relationships, at the same time that she broadened and strengthened leadership on the Board
and the Chairman’s Council. We owe a huge debt of gratitude to her for providing a legacy
that will serve the Heckscher Museum of Art and our community well for years to come.
While we pay tribute to the many accomplishments of the past year, we also take time to
reflect upon the future endeavors of the Heckscher. In September, we witnessed the
ceremonial groundbreaking that portends the future of the Museum. The Heckscher Museum
of Art is one of the finest small museums in the nation and we are poised for exciting
evolution and growth, both programmatically and in the physical plant. As we begin the
celebration of the 85th year of this remarkable Long Island cultural institution, it is with the
clear knowledge that the best is yet to come!
The Year in Review
EDUCATION AND PUBLIC PROGRAMS
The Museum’s Education Department is committed to establishing relationships between
people and art. As a team, the Department educates, collaborates, inspires, and in many
instances forms friendships with art lovers of all ages. Throughout the year the Department
offered 128 programs that educated and entertained children, students, families, and adult
audiences. A total of 22,010 individuals were impacted, including 12,578 adults and
9,432 children. With assistance from museum educators, art historians, artists, and
performers, it was proven that any location could be transformed into an interactive learning
environment, whether in the Museum galleries or on one of the many outreach program
sites. The content and quality of the program offerings continues to expand the Museum’s
reputation as a premier cultural center.
The special exhibitions presented throughout the year provided the inspiration for such
programs as Artists’ Studio Tours; Interpreting for Impact: Superintendents’ Day Professional
Development Educator Workshop; and Trompe-l’oeil: Public Vision a presentation by muralist
William Cochran. This insightful lecture brought together Vision Long Island, the Town of
Huntington Public Arts Advisory Board, and the general public for the shared vision of
bringing the community together through public art.
The Education Department connected with community partners for a variety of new
initiatives. The first annual Community ArtSense Exhibition was a successful collaboration
with the Huntington Public Library that extended the popular summer program to new
audiences. The Huntington Public Library Station Branch provided the exhibition space to
kick-off this project featuring 14 original student expressions, which offered color and
original art to the Library. The Museum also partnered with the Huntington Public Library
and the Huntington Arts Council for Family Discovery Nights during the summer months.
SCHOOL DISCOVERY PROGRAMS
School Discovery Programs provided students in grades K–12 with valuable introductions to
the world of museums and the visual arts. Students were challenged to use critical thinking
skills, enhance their communication skills, and develop important connections between art
and the changing world. In 2004, 54 school districts participated in these in-gallery sessions.
At year’s end a total of 6,650 individuals had participated in our School Discovery Programs,
including 5,864 students and 786 adults, from 310 classes. Additionally, over 40 school
districts participated in Long Island’s Best: Young Artists at the Heckscher, an annual arts-ineducation
program that encourages high school students throughout Nassau and Suffolk
Counties to view the Museum as an inspirational resource in their lives. Students who
participated were encouraged to develop their own personal artistic interpretations to works
viewed in the galleries. A select group of approximately 80 works were then showcased in
a two-week long exhibition at the Heckscher.
During the year, the Heckscher offered our Junior and High School Docent Programs to
3 school districts. Museum Educators trained 93 Junior and High School Docents, and in
Heckscher Museum of Art
addition to learning the behind-the-scenes workings of the Museum and communicating
exhibition information through peer-to-peer presentations to over 1,000 students, this
group of young docents was asked to face an even greater challenge, that of presenting to
Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton.
On March 13, 2004, Senator Clinton visited the Museum and observed our High School
and Junior Docents in action. Senator Clinton viewed the colorful and energetic exhibition,
Red Grooms: Selections from the Graphic Work, received a personal tour from the Huntington
High School Docents, and heard a short lesson on printmaking techniques from Birchwood
Intermediate School Junior Docents. The Junior Docents also presented her with an original
series of prints that they created while experiencing printmaking in the Museum’s
classroom. Senator Clinton addressed all of the visitors in the Museum that afternoon and
was quite impressed by the Heckscher and the docent presentations.
TEACHER PROGRAMS
Educator workshops provide insight and strategies for integrating art and exhibitions into
the classroom curriculum. The Education Department provided educators an opportunity to
receive In-Service credit at a two-day summer workshop, American Studio Glass: A Survey of
the Movement. Over 150 teachers participated in educator workshops in 2004.
As the year came to an end the Education Department developed a new educational tool
intended to provide students with the opportunity to respond to and analyze works of art,
and make personal connections between artwork within the Heckscher’s permanent
collection. Playing cards highlighting pieces from the Collection were created to transform
looking at artwork into a curatorial game of selecting themes, writing wall text, and
mounting exhibitions. This game was designed to be multi-layered and to involve
role-playing, story-telling, and oral presentations. Eyes on Art: A Museum Collection
Interpretation Game has been used at educator workshops.
VOLUNTEERS AND INTERNS
The Museum is indebted to the valuable contributions of its volunteers and interns.
Volunteer docents become the friendly face representing the Museum at Gallery Talks,
Docent Tours, and at many public programs. This year 46 docents contributed
4,085 hours of service to the Museum. The dedication and expertise of our docents
impacted 5,567 visitors that attended Gallery Talks and Tours. Volunteer docents also
assisted instruction for Heckscher on the Road, our adult outreach program, which reached
a total of 3,400 adults in nursing homes, senior centers, and libraries.
Through collaborations and partnerships with local colleges and universities, a total of
6 interns volunteered, were hired, or received school-to-work credit. Interns assisted with
our Education, Development and Registrar’s departments. In addition to receiving valuable
experience in the museum field, interns contributed 643 hours of service.
In 2004, the Museum had a total of 314 volunteers who collectively contributed
7,653 hours of service to the Heckscher. We are deeply grateful for all of their
contributions that helped assure the success of the Museum.
