Memorable Moments
Alf arrived to the Club 12 years ago; with a mandate to improve service
levels, tighten all internal controls and processes, and be entrepreneurial
in thought. When Alf arrived, the Club was doing approximately $700,000
in gross revenue in the F&B department. Today we are over $3,000,000.
Alf has worked with very dedicated people, and a team that has been able to
do amazing things out of a kitchen that is truly designed for half the load.
Alf as the leader of the F&B team has had his signature in most of the
developments, improvements and results that come out of the department.
Alf will be missed by both members and staff alike, and on behalf of the Club,
we would like to thank him for all he has done for the organization and
wish him all the best in the future.
Calgary Winter Club member Duane DeJager
placed 1st in both Light Weight and Master’s divisions
at two natural body building competitions
in October, collecting 4 awards.
Duane has been training hard in the Fitness Centre at the
Calgary Winter Club and entered his first competitions with INBF
and IDFA, both drug-free body building federations.
Congratulations Duane
all of your dedication and hard work paid off!!
As 2010 draws to a close and we go into a new year, I can
say that it has been a year of great progress and change for
the Club. On behalf of the Board of Directors, I would like
to extend Season’s Greetings to all members and the best to
everyone for 2011.
The new year will usher in our much anticipated expansion at
the Club. Your Construction and Strategic Planning
Committees have been hard at work getting the final approval
for the Development Permit. We have also made changes that
will make the future work in Phase Two and Three add so
much more value to our Club. Our mid-February start date
is coming up fast and I must ask now for your anticipated
patience and understanding. For anyone who has renovated
or built, the disruption to services, noise and dust will come
as no surprise. Your Board has pledged to keep the lines of
communication open so that when rescheduling and problems
are foreseen, you will be notified by e-mail and through Club
Connections. Watch your inbox as our Construction Team
will be providing many updates.
On October 23 rd , the Board and senior management met for
a day-long retreat at the Club. The theme of the retreat was
service and how it can be improved in all areas of the Club.
Many great ideas were offered and I was impressed with how
all members of the team brought forward excellent
proposals to make the Club an even better facility. Both
Board and Management realize that members expect a high
level of service. We were fortunate to have Ed McLaughlin,
CEO of Vancouver’s Hollyburn Club give a presentation.
His club has just completed an expansion and he was good
enough to share many insights that will hopefully make our
project run smoothly. Another suggestion that came out of the
retreat was the idea of mini surveys. In the past, the Club has
done major surveys, but usually every three years at most. I
know that we can all be inundated with surveys, but please
take the time to respond. It is hoped that hot button areas,
like Food and Beverage, can be improved by just asking the
members on a more regular basis.
Inside this issue..
I spoke earlier of change at the Club. As of the last week of
October, the Selection Committee with the help of the search
firm Conroy Ross, has interviewed six candidates for the
position of CEO at the Club. Further meetings are scheduled
for early November and we hope to soon have the permanent
position filled. Thanks to all of those who applied. In the
interim, Jan Bloemraad and his senior managers have done an
excellent job of conducting “business as usual” at the Club.
This relatively young group has many excellent ideas to offer.
Also, effective November 1, 2010, Alf Saunders resigned as
Food and Beverage Manager. I would like to thank Alf for his
years of service to the Club and wish him well in his future
endeavours.
You may have noticed the new menu at the 818 Bistro. Why
not make a dinner reservation if you haven’t been there for a
while? Say hi and pass on any suggestions to Chef Nancy. It
is the goal of this Board to make the Club’s facilities a
member’s first choice when it comes to dining. The
message came through loud and clear at the AGM that change
is needed. I hope when our permanent CEO is in place that
we can conduct a thorough examination of the facility with
member input. To that end, I will be asking members to
volunteer for an ad hoc committee to improve this important
area of the Club. The Board wants to hear from you, so stay
tuned.
Finally, as our membership grows, we run the risk of
becoming a large, impersonal institution. If I were to have a
New Year’s resolution, it would be to make our Club more
like the homey, family-orientated facility of days gone by.
Don’t walk down the hall with your head down. Say hi to
fellow members and make new members feel welcome. The
atmosphere at the Winter Club is only as good as we make it.
When our expansion is complete, we will have a wonderful
building. Let’s work together to make it an equally wonderful
gathering place!
See you at the Club!
Mike
ACHIevement AwARD 2010
This year’s recipient of the Donna
Rutherford Male Achievement Award is
Derek Field. Derek is attending California
Lutheran University, studying Geology
and is playing on the golf team.
Derek’s dedication to learning started in junior high by
making the honor roll with a higher than 80% average, every
term, every year. Derek still saw room for improvement
entering high school and became an Honors with Excellence
student throughout high school, achieved by maintaining a
greater than 85% average.
Derek likes to compete in sports for the personal challenges
that they provide. Having played hockey for 9 years, this
taught him toughness and grittiness. Soccer, lacrosse and
baseball instilled a sense of teamwork.
Derek started playing squash at age 6, was a five-time CWC
junior champion, and was ranked #1 in Alberta and as high as
#6 in Canada by 2009. He was a two-time Junior Provincial
Team Member, a Gold Medallist in the 2008 Alberta Winter
Games and competed at Canadian, US, European Junior Open
events. Derek competed in the Scottish and British Junior
Opens as a member of Team Canada.
By age 14 Derek became a full-time golfer in the summer
months. He participated in the “Strive For Excellence” RCGA
Program in 2008 and 2009 and won the MacLennan Ross
Tour Championship in 2008. Derek competed in the Alberta
Junior Provincials in 2009 and 2010 as well as in the Alberta
Mens Open in 2010. He played in the CJGA and Maple Leaf
Junior tour and qualified for the Tour Championship in 2009.
In the span of 3 years Derek dropped his handicap from 24
to 2 and has had numberous top 5 results in Provincial and
National golf events.
Music also has been of huge importance in Derek’s life. In
junior high, he first started playing saxophone and within a
few months he became the star saxophone player. By high
school, he had established himself as the saxophone section
leader and first chair alto sax in every band. Derek’s
scholastic references noted how they have seen Derek prepare
himself for a future in post-secondary education through
setting goals and understanding that hard work and
determination are required to succeed.
Derek is a most worthy recipient of the Donna Rutherford
Male Achievement Award.
JOAn RICHARDSOn memORIAL
AwARD – 2010
The Joan Richardson Memorial Award
recipient for 2010 is Meghan Black.
Meghan is attending the University of
Alberta registered in the first year of a
Masters of Science in Geology. She
completed her Bachelors of Science degree
with a specialization in geology in April of 2010.
Since joining the Winter Club, Meghan’s main athletic
endeavor and passion has been badminton. Meghan has
enjoyed all sports through the Club and even worked as a
multi-sport summer camp councilor in 2007.
Meghan’s love for sports outgrew the walls of the Club and
she started skiing. Meghan and her family were a part of the
Sunshine Ski Club and she joined the Nancy Greene program
for 3 years, and then skied in the Technical Development
Program for another 3 years. She was awarded the most
improved racer award and the sportsman award.
In the off season, Megan became interested in horses and
riding. Over the last 11 years she has competed at many
different levels of competition. Her highest achievement was
winning the Reserve Champion Youth Aged Geldings at the
Canadian National Quarter Horse show in 2004.
Meghan strongly believes in the importance of staying fit,
no matter your age, ability or background. With this in mind
she set up a Woman’s summer lacrosse league in 2007. She
played an instrumental role in establishing the Calgary
Woman’s Master Lacrosse League, which is open to all
women 18 and older, throughout the US and Canada. They
now have over 50 players, ranging in age from 20 to 53.
While at University, Megan promoted fitness and an active
lifestyle and coordinated sports teams for the International
House on campus. After moving from the International
House, she took on a role of Unit Manager for the PS
Warren Geological Society and the Woman’s Intramural
Sports Coordinator. Meghan’s unit ended up winning the Glen
Ruby Memorial Conference B Cup due to their hard work,
dedication and good sportsmanship. She also was awarded the
TM Johnson Award for Outstanding Contribution to Woman’s
Intramurals.
Meghan looks forward to undertaking her Master’s degree
with the same dedication that she has shown towards sports.
She is indeed a worthy recipient of the Joan Richardson
Memorial Award.

December 18, 2010 - January 2, 2011
Over Christmas break the childcare and nursery will be
getting re-painted and therefore we will be moving both to
the upper classroom. This will mean a much smaller room
and less variety in toys. In order for us to maintain a safe
environment we will be limiting the number of infants to
a maximum of 3 at a time and will be limiting the total
number in the room to 25. Children will be taken on a first
come first serve basis and since we are doing this during a
quieter time we are hoping we will not need to turn children
away. We apologize in advance for any inconvenience this
may cause.
The Calgary Winter Club is proud to once again be part of the Magic of Christmas, a registered non-profit
organization that brings the joy of Christmas to people who may not be able to enjoy this joyous season.
Starting at 6:00 am on Christmas Eve morning, volunteers go to homes in need of loving, caring and
sharing. Many homes are visited; homes where finances are stretched to the limits, homes where illness/
death/violence make it hard to be joyous. They also visit nursing homes and hospitals as they share not
only Christmas gifts but Christmas smiles and joy. We invite everyone to join us in this very worthwhile
endeavor. Members and staff can select a tag from the Magic of Christmas tree located across from the
Sports office and purchase a gift for the person selected. The present is then placed under the tree with
the tag attached. Please do not wrap the present as the magic of Christmas must check all presents before
they can be delivered. the last pick-up for gifts will be December 22 nd at noon.
Walking is one of the best, safest and most natural forms of
exercise. You can, in fact, walk your way to a healthier,
stronger cardiovascular system. Walking is an effective exercise
for people of all ages and all states and levels of health.
Now that the chilly weather is upon us, why not bring your usual
outdoor walks to the warmth of the Beach Pool? Walking in
hip-to-waist high in water is a very good low-stress, highintensity
exercise. Unlike walking on land, the water adds a
dimention of buoyancy which makes for less impact but also
adds resistance. For higher intensity, run in the water or
challenge yourself by walking against the lazy river! (and you
don’t even have to get your hair wet…)
The 2010-2011 Sea Sprites season is now
well underway. At the time of writing, we are
preparing for an upcoming Figures Meet we are
hosting at the Club on November 7 th . This is a
skills competition where the girls compete in the
performance of specific patterns and movements
which are key elements in the sport.
We are excited to report that two of our athletes and our Head
Coach were honoured recently with awards for their performance
last season.
Breanne Bauer - Winner of Provincial 12 and under 2010
award.
Maxime McLean - Winner of Provincial 14 and under 2010
award.
Jewely Walton - Winner of Provincial Coach 2010 award.
Congratulations to all.
We recently completed our first out-of-town training camp for
our senior team. It was held in Henderson, a suburb of Los
Vegas in late October and it turned out exceptionally well. The
girls trained intensively in an outdoor pool, enjoying the warm
weather and sunshine of the desert. They were also treated to
a performance of Cirque de Soleil’s show called ‘O’, which is
a show that features synchronized swimming, in the style of
Cirque’ and had the opportunity to meet the coach and some of
the performers before the show.
Just a reminder that our annual Christmas Water Show is being
held on December 5 th at 6:00 pm in the main pool. Come and
enjoy watching our athletes perform their competitive routines.
Bring the family. All are welcome.
Health Benefits of Swimming During Pregnancy
What's good and healthy about swimming workouts
performed by pregnant women?
It is a cardio workout which helps the cardiovascular system
perform well, which is essential for proper development of
the uterus. It also helps maintain healthy weight essential
for healthy pregnancy. Another swimming health benefit for
pregnant women is that it increases the flexibility of their
body and softens their body tissues as well. Swimming can
also be relaxing and reduces your stress, which is essential
during pregnancy.
Swimming helps regulate your breathing pattern and it
increases the oxygen flow towards your muscles. It further
helps improve the blood circulation. It is also known to be
good to physically challenged people. With swimming, health
problems like leg pain and backache can be effectively cured.
Another swimming health benefit is that it helps your strained
spine get relaxed. A strained spine can lead to problems like
headache and weakness. Swimming is known to cure
problems like joint pain and high blood pressure.
Saturday, January 22 nd | 7:30 pm | $15 per person
Thirty years ago, Dennis Havrelock felt that
the Club should have a competitive bowling
event that would bring together bowlers from
all of our leagues. Thus, the Super Bowl was
created and it has become the highlight of the
bowling season. Once again this season, 50
bowlers will be competing for the prestigious Super Bowl
title along with $750 in prize money. Look for registration
information in the Bowling Centre after Christmas and join in
to thank Dennis for thirty years of great bowling!
HI SCOReS!
There was some extraordinary scores bowled by the ladies
during the first week of October. On Tuesday, October 5 th in
the Tuesday Ladies League, the ladies high single on lanes 7
& 8 changed hands three times that afternoon. It all started
when Laurie Tambosso took the lane high with 257, but
Tracy Rvachew wrestled it away in game two with 273. Not
to be outdone, Laurie took Tracy’s name off the board in the
third game with a tremendous 281 game. Later that evening,
the lanes were still hot as Toby Roch rolled her career high
game of 302. Two nights later, Cheryl Grabowecky bowled
her best game and the new ladies Club High Single of 314.
Other recent high scores have included 287 by Michelle
Huszti, 276 by Milvia Nazarko, 253 by Margaret
Shannon, 255 by Marg Aksenchuk, 230 by Diane
Carruthers, 355 by Nick Lalla, 353 by Vincent Jennings,
On November 8 th , Ken Hilland came very
close to achieving five-pin bowling
perfection with a 416 game. Ken rolled nine
strikes in a row and then left a corner pin
standing in the tenth frame to end his
amazing run. Ken spared it up and left
another corner pin standing on his last ball
of the game. His 416 game was the highest
game at the Club since Rob Robostan’s 418 game in 1996.
Special thanks goes out to Antosz Orthodontics for sponsoring
our 9 strikes in a row award that will be presented to Ken at
our Wind-up Banquet at the end of the season.
A week earlier, Bill Daniel was on fire as
he achieved the Men’s Club High Triple of
865. He had games of 349, 304, and 212.
This is a tremendous accomplishment
considering that Bill’s average was 183 at
the time. On the night, Bill was an
unbelievable 316 points over average.
Congratulations, Bill!
Neuro-Proprioceptive Taping – Fad or Proven Technique? By Sport Physiotherapist Lois Pohlod
Winter Club goers may have seen fellow members working
out with blue, black or even pink tape on one of their body
parts. This colored tape was initially developed by
chiropractor Kenso Kase of Japan and has recently become
a big part of sport medicine rehab. Mr. Kase wanted a tape
that could modify the normal function of soft tissues but not
restrict the way traditional athletic tape does. He developed
Kinesiotape in 1995 and it has been used by high performance
athletes at the Olympics and in professional sport ever since.
You may have seen it on the shoulder of USA beach
volleyball player Keri Walsh at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
This tape is modeled on the thickness and elasticity of real
skin. It is made of cotton and has elasticity throughout that
allows the taped area to move through full range of motion.
It is used to improve proprioception (one’s awareness of the
position of a body part); to help control swelling; to facilitate
or inhibit muscle function and decrease pain by correcting the
tissue and surface stimulation.
After recently completing the Neuro-proprioceptive taping
course, the Calgary Winter Club physiotherapists have been
putting this concept to the test. New injuries respond to taping
for circulatory effects. A web-like taping seems to control
swelling in the affected area allowing for earlier return to
activity. This ‘tissue correction’ technique is thought to
increase microcirculation and optimize the movement of
‘metabolic waste’ that develops in the early stage of injury.
Another tissue correction technique of placing an X over a
trigger point seems to quiet down the constant tightness and
pain caused at these areas. One common area helped by this
technique is pain between the shoulder blades.
The facilitation technique has tape placed with tension from
the origin of the muscle to its attachment. The moderate tension
placed on the tape stimulates the muscle to contract more
of its fibers allowing for a stronger muscle. An example is
facilitation tape over the lower inside muscle of the
quadriceps (the Vastus Medialis Oblique). This muscle is
key in control of the patella and facilitating the VMO allows
better tracking of the kneecap resulting in less patella-femoral
knee pain. Adding the inhibition technique to the outside
muscle of quadriceps (Vastus Lateralis) lessens the pull of this
muscle on the kneecap making for better patellar movement.
One of the inhibition techniques that has been giving many
patients good relief is the inhibition of the levator scapula
muscle of the shoulder. This muscle works double time in
shoulder injuries and simply placing the tape over this muscle
in the inhibition technique quiets it down and allows the
proper movement technique to happen.
Direction of pull and tension of the tape are the key elements
to a good result from using this tape. Once a technique is
shown to be helpful in injury treatment, most patients can be
instructed on self-application. Each application lasts 3-5 days
and the tape can be worn while exercising and showering.
More research is being published on the positive effects
of Neuro-Proprioceptive taping. This tape is sold by many
companies under brand names such as K-Tape, Leukotape-K;
Fysiotape and the original Kinesiotape. If you have an injury
that you think may benefit from this taping technique speak
with one of the physiotherapists at the clinic.
Dear Calgary Winter Club Members,
This is the second Expansion Update we are providing to our members and we will continue to provide
regular updates until the project is completed fall 2012. While there is still no actual construction
activity, this initial stage does involve much planning, costing and evaluation and detailed design for
structural, mechanical, electrical and architectural design. The project is progressing very well.
U pdate #2
We have just recently received our Development Permit after a considerable amount of delay in this
process with the City. The next step with the City will be to apply for the Building and Foundation Permits.
Our expectation is that this will be a quicker process.
The architectural tender drawings are being finalized with some final decisions being made on materials
and finishes. Each decision we make has an effect on the project budget and we are quite aware of our
need to maintain appropriate construction and design contingencies throughout this aspect of the project.
Construction is scheduled to start in February and the first signs of work will be on the outside in and
around the shipping and receiving area. Our construction management company, Chandos Construction,
will be arriving on site at that time and will use the curling parking lot as a staging area for trailers
vehicles and materials. Chandos will require the use of this parking area until the end of next summer.
Over the spring and early summer Chandos will level the land where the tennis expansion will be
situated. When this area is ready Chandos will move out of the curling parking lot and move to the tennis
area for the remainder of the project.
We will be providing regular updates regarding the overall project and the construction schedule
for Club members via the Club Connections, Club News and our website.
This annual cash prize event hosted by the CWC is an
opportunity for male and female Juvenile and Bantam teams
from Southern Alberta to tune up their games prior to District
shake up the event. We are teaming up with the Calgary Youth
Curling Association and offering a Bantam section for the
younger curlers as well as a coach and curler seminar. This
event is run just like the playdowns with timed pre-game
practices, timeouts, coaches, and officials so that teams
become familiar with the playdown format before they get
there. Entry forms are available on the Junior Bulletin Board.
Squash Professionals
ashley read | Head Squash Professional
Four years ago Ashley Read came to the Calgary Winter Club to take over the head squash position. At the time there
was only one full time pro in the squash section and the philosophy was focused around group lessons. How times have
changed in our Squash section! We now employee three full time pros who all have world class qualifications and our
squash area has never looked better. This can largely be attributed to Ashley as he has taken the squash section to a
whole new level.
Ashley has worked hard to promote his philosophy “to keep working and striving to be the best you can be.” Ashley has
also taught our juniors that preparation has a direct result on the final result. That the effort you put in will directly affect
the result you get out. Ashley believes that we have the talent here at the Club to produce national champions and he wants
to keep his section growing and continue to teach and strive to make our athletes the best they can be.
Ashley is one of only 25 people in the world to have the England Squash level four Elite coaching certificate and he hopes
one day that we can put the Calgary Winter Club on the international map. With Ashley in our corner we are well on our way.
Susie King | Assistant Squash Professional
Susie has been with the Club for just over two years now, and if you can believe it she used to be a student of Ashley. Susie
played on the world squash tour and actually ranked as high as number 64 in the world. At the age of 18 Susie played for
England in the world team’s event and they placed number 3 in the world. WOW!
The reason that Susie came to the Club is that she saw it as a great opportunity and heard how amazing our facilities are.
In addition she wanted to be a part of a great coaching team. Some of the changes that Susie has already worked hard
to put in place are to increase the amount of female participation in all levels of squash. Susie also wants to increase the
number of events that we do here at the Club each year, because she sees the benefits that result from these great events.
Susie has already started to help build a great program in our squash section and she has really been a key contributor in
making the squash courts “the place to be.” We are very lucky to have Susie as part of our Squash team and we are sure
she will be here for years to come.
Colin Whitney | Assistant Squash Professional
Colin Whitney is the latest addition to our squash section and just joined us on September 16th of this year. Colin came to
us from Bermuda where he had been working for the past two years. One of the key reasons that Colin moved to Calgary
is that his girlfriend is a native Calgarian. Why Colin would move from the sunny beaches of Bermuda to the cold mountain
region would make anyone scratch their head and wonder.
However, Colin is very impressed with the standard of junior players that we already have at the Club, and one of his goals
is to increase the amount of junior tournaments and events. Colin has always said “you can tell a good squash club by how
busy the courts are.” On a weekly basis we have some of the busiest squash courts in the city and our participation levels
are increasing every day. This is a testament to the very qualified and dedicated squash professionals that we have in place.
Colin in his earlier working years worked for his Dad and had to be up at 6:00 am on the weekends to get to work, after
a few months of that Colin decided that was not the life for him. Lucky for us he chose squash as his trade, so let’s hope
we can keep him on the courts and in the game.
