⁄2) and mum Leisha picked up their
new, family vehicle from Watson Haworth Motors. The local import dealership and Te Awamutu based vehicle finance company mtf made the deal
possible. Reliable family transport is vital to ongoing treatment for the family as they travel to both Waikato Hospital and Auckland’s Starship regularly.
Last year the generous people of Te Awamutu
and the Waikato helped raise money to send a
family of six to a specialist neurofibromatosis
(NF) clinic in Sydney.
The Te Awamutu Courier brought the story to
the attention of the public on November 18 last
year — former Te Awamutu couple Leisha and
Patrick Lockley needed to get their four children
to Sydney’s Neurofibromatosis (NF) Clinic at
the Children’s Hospital, headed by internationally
regarded NF specialist Professor
Kathryn North.
All four of the couple’s children — Paetyn
(10), Aspin (7), Aayla (31 ⁄2) and Brae (21 sible.
The Lockley’s own vehicle and loaned van
But it has been a downhill slope for the family were not proving up to the task as reliable
since coming home.
transport, and with finances tight a new vehicle
While there is now more understanding was proving difficult to procure.
⁄2) — have
the potentially fatal condition, and recently it
has been discovered Mr Lockley does as well.
The family made the trip to Sydney last
month, leaving over Easter weekend, and
about the condition and how it is affecting each
member of the Lockley family, there is also
deterioration in health, more especially for the
babies of the family.
During the visit to the Sydney clinic doctors
discovered youngest child Brae has a heart
problem which requires a full cardiac assessment.
The condition is unrelated to NF.
And Aayla has started an 18 month course of
chemotherapy in a desperate bid to save her
eyesight.
Aayla has cancerous tumours growing on her
optic nerves.
Mrs Lockley says the chemotherapy has
largely destroyed Aayla’s immune system and
the family is doing everything they can to
Te Awamutu’s Watson Haworth Motors and
mtf were able to put together an affordable
package for the family to get them into a newer,
reliable family mover which will be a great
boost.
Mrs Lockley says Aayla is requiring greater
attention from her and her husband as her
personality had changed since treatment started.
She says the youngest daughter is more
fearful and likes to be close to mum or dad.
Plus the assessment in Sydney also revealed
that Mr Lockley’s condition, undiagnosed until
recently, will need to be monitored closely as he
was a high risk of developing tumours.
Once again the family is tremendously thankful
to the community for everything they have
returning on May 4.
ensure she has a sterile environment.
done to help and say they will be doing
Mrs Lockley says there has been a lot to take Travel has become an even more important everything possible to keep the family as healthy
in since then, but the family is grateful to the element for the family as Aayla’s treatment is at and happy as possible in very trying circum-
community for making the opportunity pos- Auckland’s Starship.
YOUR LETTERS
Councillors seem confused
The reasoning of Cr Barnes
for voting a ‘‘temporary yes’’ to
$1 Million velodrome financial
support is not logical.
If you are unsure about the
merits of a project, you should
not vote to support it until you
are sure. Votes are not ‘temporary’.
You are making decisions
on public record that are there
forever.
The four conditions should
be met before the project comes
to you for consideration. You
and Council staff are not there
to assist the promoters of a
project to find ways for it to
happen. If you are unsure, you
Council’s maths questionable
What part of elementary
mathematics does the Waipa
District Council not understand?
Firstly they talk of a grant
of $3.5 Million for the
velodrome, which ratepayers
could not afford; now it’s down
to $1 Million and, wow, this is
not going to cost ratepayers a
thing. It is all covered by an
extra ratepayer and because of
this new ratepayer (i.e. the
velodrome) 25 new houses will
be built that also will help
Council to cover the $1 Million
grant.
Unfortunately, over the 20
year loan period this grant
will cost ratepayers $1.665
Million if the houses are not
built (which is highly likely
considering the number of
houses for sale in the district
at the moment), then the loss
of rateable income could be in
the vicinity of $40,000-$53,000
which present ratepayers will
have to pick up.
And if the houses are built,
will have on the sewerage in
The cold, hard facts are that
Waipa cannot afford even $1
Million. The supposed returns
fall far short of what it will
cost.
B.P. MORRISON
Exposing water to air solves chlorine issues
Re. J. Perrett’s letter ‘Concern
over water’ in the Courier.
Where a water supply system
is provided by a local
authority it must be provided
in accordance with New Zealand
and in some cases World
Health Standards.
Despite J. Perrett’s reference
to drawing our water from
Pirongia’s fresh water streams,
natural water is never absolute-
should be telling them to go
back to the drawing board and
figure it out themselves.
Cr Simmons has guessed the
size of the project and may have
been misinformed and he has
not checked that out. Cr Gower
ought to know the difference
between assurances and facts.
He has been happy to wage a bet
of ratepayers’ money on
assurances that cannot be
proven and are set up to remain
mere promises that are, and
may remain, empty.
As usual, Cr Wilson is the
only Te Awamutu Ward councillor
who was prepared to
ly pure.
Added to which is the kilometres
and kilometres of
pipelines necessary to bring the
water to our garden gates.
As water is one of the greatest
solvents and will dissolve
many substances in solid,
liquid or gaseous form, it
follows therefore that some sort
of treatment must be given
before the water is considered
consider the true understandings
and wants of the ratepayers
and his obligation to use
ratepayers’ money wisely. He is
the Mr Spock of the WDC — he
considers logic.
Council staff cannot properly
forecast anything — any
prediction is based on ‘ifs and
buts’. The Mayor should not be
trying to convince other
Mayors and other councils to
put money into projects which
are outside their ratepayers’
districts.
Could someone please
explain to me why it is that
when a property developer
fit for human consumption.
One of these treatments is
the application of chlorine.
Chlorine is an effective germicide
and used in the chlorination
of municipal water
supplies.
Unfortunately, it has a
strong chemical odour that
some people find objectionable.
However, the smell soon
dissipates in fresh air, so my
wants to create 25 new houses,
that person is considered evil
and is charged through the nose
by the WDC for all the trouble
caused, whereby when all they
have done is tried to make
homes for people.
In this case a velodrome
merely promises 25 new homes
and the red carpet is rolled out
for the fat cats to drive their
Bentleys down.
Councillors, your community
is laughing at you, the
sports people are laughing, big
business people are laughing.
JAMES PARLANE
Abridged
suggestion to the Perretts
would be not to drink directly
from the tap but to fill an open
top jug from the tap, then pop it
in the fridge for a little while —
perhaps even fill the jug before
going to bed at night then they
will have water ready for
drinking and filling their son’s
water bottle in the morning.
It works for us.
E.G. TOWNLEY
Answer Man unmasked
over eighty years later
BY CATHY ASPLIN
In 1926 AG
Warburton was manager
of the Waipa Post
(later to become the Te
Awamutu Courier).
At that time he also
published magazines
and journals, including
a movie magazine called
‘The Picture Screen’.
One of the columns in
The Picture Screen was
called ‘The Answer
Man’. It invited readers
around the country to
send in their queries.
An anonymous
journalist replied to
questions about movie
stars, recent releases
and Hollywood gossip.
Hundreds of letters
(mostly from female
fans) were sent in to PO
Box 1, Te Awamutu to be
answered by The
Answer Man.
As the editions went
on during 1927 the letters
became more personal,
with women
asking for photos and
details of the writer.
At one stage The
Answer Man even
received a letter of proposal.
What the readers
didn’t know was that
The Answer Man was
actually a female who
worked at the Waipa
Post (later to be Te Awamutu
Courier).
Her name was Jean
Sinclair and when she
married she
became Jean
Hull.
Later in
her career Mrs
Hull was a Te
Awamutu College
commercial
teacher and
careers advisor
for students. She
worked in the College
office and
taught part time
from 1947 - 1951 and
was on the permanent
staff from 1955 -
1973.
Her daughter Naomi
Jackson of Parawera
still has some of the
issues of The Picture
Screen and says her late
mother often talked
fondly about her time
working at the Waipa
Post.
‘‘She used to talk
about riding her bike to
work and how she
enjoyed answering the
many letters that growing
numbers of fans
wrote.
‘‘We thought it was
very amusing that she
wrote the columns as a
man and that there were
lots of female fans who
wrote some quite risque
letters.
‘‘I don’t think they
ever realised they were
writing to a woman.’’
Mrs Jackson believes
her mother worked at
the Waipa Post for a few
years before she was
married.
‘‘She also talked
about the fire that destroyed
part of the Waipa
Post building in 1927.
‘‘Reading about the
fire in the Courier Centennial
Edition (18/4/11)
reminded me of my late
mother and her unusual
role as The Answer
Man.’’
Collection
of leaves
underway
Waipa’s annual autumn leaf collection
for streets with heavy tree growth
got underway in Te Awamutu and
Kihikihi this week.
Waipa District Council’s road corridor
manager Dawn Inglis says
Council’s new contractor, Strada Corporation
Ltd, has started the weekly
leaf collection, which will continue for
six weeks along designated streets, or
in parts of streets that have a lot of
trees.
The streets, or parts of streets that
have a leaf collection are Bank, Cherry
Tree, Christie, College, Eden, Factory,
Freeman, Jackson, Palmer, Roche,
Tawhiao, Taylor, Teasdale, Turere,
Vaile, Young, Church and Whitmore
streets.
Residents in these areas will receive
a letter with more details about the
collection in their street. Council’s
website (www.waipadc.govt.nz) also
has information and street maps of the
collection areas in the About our
Services/Leaves section.
Mrs Inglis says wet weather could
affect the timing of collections because
wet leaves reduce the collection
machinery’s capacity. It won’t stop
collections, but the work could take a
little longer.
She says that people should not burn
the leaves to dispose of them.
‘‘Burning leaves is not good for the
environment or relationships with your
neighbours. The Urban Fire Bylaw
doesn’t allow urban fires without a
permit being issued from fire officers.’’
Council’s road corridor team say
they appreciate the public letting them
know of any areas that require additional
attention.
People should call Council’s customer
support team on 0800 924 723 if
they notice any large piles of leaves, or
if leaves are not collected.
Food for Thought helps students
make healthy lifestyle choices
BY DEAN TAYLOR
Te Awamutu Primary
School has taken up an
offer from Pak‘nSave for a
free nutritional education
programme, and the store
says others schools are
welcome to join in.
Representatives from
the new Te Awamutu
supermarket have been
promoting the Te Awamutu
School Milk Programme,
and at the same
time asking teachers how
else they can help promote
healthy lifestyles to
youngsters.
In particular
Foodstuffs’ nutrition education
programme ‘Food
for Thought’ which targets
primary schools,
specifically Years 5-6
students, has been identified
as a valuable
resource.
Food for Thought is a
national Nutrition Education
Programme based on
the current New Zealand
Curriculum developed by
Foodtsuffs.
The programme has a
major emphasis on
enquiry based learning
and it encompasses many
other areas of the New
Zealand Curriculum.
Food for Thought has
been created specifically
to assist teachers in
addressing the
increasingly important
topics of health and
wellbeing.
Fence, not fancy velodrome
SHERWIN VILLAGE resident Lesley McFarlane digs where she usually has a thriving garden.
BY CATHY ASPLIN
Sherwin Village residents are
feeling disgruntled.
News that Waipa District
Council was committing $1m
towards a multi-million dollar
velodrome hasn’t gone down
well with the seniors who live in
the Council-owned units at Kihikihi.
After receiving a $22 per
fortnight cost of living adjustment
(for a married couple) from
the Government, the pensioners
recently received a letter from
Waipa District Council telling
them their rent is rising $10 per
week.
‘‘Which leaves me and my
wife with just $2,’’ says Ralph
Ashdown.
‘‘What can that buy?
Everything’s gone up - I can’t
even buy a litre of milk or a litre
of petrol.
‘‘To some people it doesn’t
seem a lot, but the rent rise is a
big jump for pensioners.
‘‘It wouldn’t be so bad if we
felt things were being done
around the village. But very
little has been done in the way of
maintenance.
‘‘We have units that need
attention and a boundary fence
rotting and falling down, it’s
been like that for three years.
‘‘Every time we ask about
something to be done, we get told
it’s not in the budget.’’
Mr Ashdown says the residents
feel as though they are
being forced to go cap-in-hand to
FENCE FIRST PRIORITY
Lesley McFarlane lives next
to the dilapidated boundary
fence between the village and the
neighbouring motel.
Since moving in she had been
cutting back overhanging
branches and growing plants
along the boundary to make it
look more attractive.
‘‘Around three years ago they
told me they would replace the
fence, then they said it would be
a shame to ruin the plants, so
they left it for a year.
‘‘Last year I removed all the
plants so the fence could be
fixed, but it wasn’t done. They
said they would do it this year,
but I’m still waiting.’’
SHOW REVIEW
South Pacific opens to full house at Woolshed
BY CATHY ASPLIN
Usually at this time
of the year people are
quick to tell you they’re
off to a warmer climate
for a mid-winter escape.
But for those who
can’t afford the airfare
— try the latest Te Awamutu
Light Operatic
Society (Talos) show.
The theatre is warm
and you can transport
yourself to a Pacific
Island complete with
lagoon, tropical plants
and ‘sunshine’ for a few
hours.
South Pacific opened
to a full house in The
Woolshed on Saturday
night.
This is the second
time Talos has staged
this production, the first
was in 1989, both under
the direction of Coral
Taylor.
Based on James
Michener’s Pulitzer
Prize winning book
Tales of the South
Pacific, the musical is
set on a tropical island
during World War II and
tells the sweeping
romantic story of two
couples — U.S. Navy
nurse Nellie Forbush
(Alice Gower) and
French plantation
owner Emile de Becque
(Bryan Bevege), Marine
Joseph Cable (Caleb
Higham) and a young
island girl Liat (Jessie-
Rae Kingi).
It explores how their
happiness is threatened
by the realities of war
and a variety of
prejudices.
When it was written
the issue of racial prejudice
was developed in
several plot threads,
including the struggle of
Nellie to accept the
mixed-race children of
her lover.
Today, of course, that
isn’t considered to be so
controversial, especially
in New Zealand a
country where mixed
heritage is commonplace.
As the show is based
on a period of history
close to our shores, it
does give a slice of wartime
life on a Pacific
Island, albeit a slightly
sanitised one.
Having directed the
show twice, Mrs Taylor
has been able to utilise
things that worked well
the first time, such as
the simplified set.
Instead of a large
number of scene
changes, which tend to
interrupt the flow of a
show, there are more
subtle adjustments.
Perhaps the loveliest
of these is the scene
featuring young lovers
Joseph and Liat.
Just by adding a
simple gauze screen,
some lighting/shadows
to indicate trees and a
cluster of candles, an
intimate atmosphere
was created.
Several performances
from the Talos
show are worth
mentioning.
My admiration goes
to Alice Gower for her
heart-felt portrayal of
Nellie.
I applaud her ability
to juggle her legal practise,
two very young
children and such a
crucial role in this musical.
(To be fair I have to
admire the fact that she
wears a stretchy, yellow
short jumpsuit too!)
She puts in a polished
performance and
creates a lovely rapport
with experienced actor
Brian Bevege.
Dawn Karauria-
Greenwood as Bloody
Mary is delightful on
stage and provides
many of the lighter
moments.
Richard Tiddy
creates a wonderfully
animated Luther Billis
and has the comic star
turn as part of the U.S
Navy variety show.
While he hams it up
in make-up, grass skirt
and coconut-shell bra,
anyone who has been to
a Tiddy family gathering
won’t be the least
surprised by his antics.
Having children
involved in an adult
musical is often a nerveracking
undertaking, so
to have five sharing the
two roles of Ngana and
Jerome must be even
more difficult.
But on opening night
youngsters Paetyn
Bailey and Wairehu
Hohepa-Te Huia looked
at home, even when
singing in French. Their
smiles at the curtain call
clearly reflected how
much they were
enjoying the experience.
Several of the songs
from South Pacific have
become well known and
provide some of the
show highlights including
Bali Ha’i, I’m Gonna
Wash That Man Right
Outta My Hair, Some
Enchanted Evening,
Bloody Mary and There
is Nothin’ Like a Dame.
To be fair the show
wasn’t faultless.
Opening night
nerves resulted in some
fumbles with lines and
props, a costume not
quite right and some
miss-timing with cast
movement and effects.
But these were all
minor details, which by
all accounts were
smoothed out for
Sunday’s matinee.
It was lovely to spot
several of the 1989 cast
members in the audience
on Saturday night
— including Freda
Cavander, Rex Bannister,
Ken Titchener and
Alex Anderson. Cathy
Hodgson was also in the
first show and had the
pleasure of seeing her
daughter, Alysha, on
stage for the second.
Family ties were also
evident with Caleb
Higham onstage as
Joseph, his mother
Donna in the group of
nurses and his grandmother
June part of the
great musical ensemble.
South Pacific runs at
The Woolshed Theatre
until June 4. Bookings
and further details available
Information Centre (ph
Battle for maunga
control continues
The battle over Maungatautari Ecological Island
control continues, with another farmer locking his
gates last week and preventing MEIT workers from
maintaining the pest proof fence.
‘‘And in a separate action, a Maori Land Court
judge agreed to prohibit the lead negotiator for Ngati
Koroki Kahukura from entering land owned by
another Maori land trust, that provides access to the
southern enclosure and the mountain off the end of
Tari Road at Pukeatua,’’ says Maungatautari landowners
Council.
While the latest farmer to lock his gates has been
aligned with the efforts of the Maungatautari Land
Owners Council, until now he had not locked his
gates.
‘‘But when he learned that new releases of
endangered birds are still taking place on the
mountain, even though it is quite possible the fence
will need to be dismantled, he believed that was
irresponsible and so is now taking a more active
stand,’’ says Maungatautari landowners Council.
Spokesperson Peter Holmes says all reintroductions
of endangered birds should be stopped
as DOC cannot guarantee the fence will be in place
inside of two months.
‘‘We are also very concerned that MEIT workers
are still coming onto private land on which they
have been told not to trespass. This is a highly
provocative move which shows disregard for private
property rights and we will be taking further
action.’’
OBITUARY
Charles Richard Beamish
By WINTEC JOURNALISM STUDENT, JASON HOWELLS.
Charles Richard Beamish (Dick) was an adventurous
man in world and business, seeing plenty of both
and reaping the benefits in his work and private life.
He was born in Blockhouse Bay in 1934, and
educated at Mt Albert Grammar School where he
excelled in sports, including soccer, rowing and target
shooting.
Mr Beamish’s ambitions lay in farming, so in 1953
he went into the five year Rural Cadet Scheme at
Lincoln University. There he also got more serious
about target shooting and was in the New Zealand
Universities team, winning the Imperial Universities
Match in 1957. In his final year at Lincoln he won the
gold medal for best student.
It was at Lincoln where he also met his wife Alison.
They married in Christchurch in 1959 shortly after
graduation.
Mr Beamish began his career as a farmer advisory
officer in Mangakino in 1960, where he looked after
the Pouakani Block.
In 1964 Mr Beamish and wife Alison settled in Te
Awamutu where he took a job with the Te Awamutu
Farm Improvement Club. There he worked as a farm
advisor.
Mr Beamish stayed with the company until 1970
when he moved into private practice with Ashworth
and Associates, and shortly afterwards helped form
Meyer Jolly Beamish and Tate, a valuation and farm
management consulting practice.
From here Mr Beamish and his wife became
successful in land development, acquiring paddocks,
subdividing them and then selling off the sections.
In 1977 the two of them also got into the jewellery
trade, by purchasing an existing jewellery shop in Te
Awamutu, and later in 1988 joined Gemtime Jewellers.
Mr Beamish and wife Alison’s success in business
was recognised when they won the 1999 Te Awamutu
Top Business Award and Best Small Business in 2001.
In spite of all his success, Mr Beamish was a
modest individual and never spoke about his considerable
life achievements.
Mr Beamish was also a devoted family man, a
dearly loved husband and best mate to Alison, and
father to Michael, Jane and Dave, Megan and Nick. He
also had one brother, John, and one sister, Dorothy.
He always encouraged his family, teaching them to
ski, and took them on numerous holidays around the
country, and one memorable holiday to Fiji.
Mr Beamish was also a fine community member
who was on the Te Awamutu College Board for six
years. He was a former Trustee and Secretary of the
Council for Te Wananga O Aotearoa.
He was a member of the Lions Club, and also
served behind the scenes with the Beamish family’s
Ngai Tai Iwi group and the Umupuia Marae.
While they had the jewellery shop both he and wife
Alison were on the town promotions committee in the
Chamber of Commerce. They were both elected life
members and Mr Beamish served as president for a
short while.
In retirement the two of them were involved in the
Probus club, and Save the Children local committee.
In May 2009 Mr Beamish and wife Alison celebrated
their 50th wedding anniversary together.
In their full life together they had travelled the
world, raised their children and ran a thriving
business. They loved tramping, and skied into their
60’s.
He passed away on 14th January 2011 in Waikato
Hospital after a battle with acute myeloid leukemia.
Oparau residents rally
over recycling canning
BY GRANT JOHNSTON
A recycling facility at Oparau that
has operated successfully for the past
10 months only has a week to run —
unless the community mobilises support
to establish its own facility.
The recycling centre was established
at Oparau Roadhouse by
Kawhia/Aotea area refuse contractor,
EnviroWaste, last year.
But community requests, which
included a petition, to Kawhia Community
Board for the refuse collection
day in Kawhia/Aotea to be
changed from Wednesday to Monday
to better service non permanent
residents, have meant the contractor
will no longer be able to collect
Oparau’s recycling.
As a result, the Oparau recycling
collection will cease from June 1.
The service was to have finished
on April 11 when the collection day
changed, but Otorohanga District
Council responded to expressions of
concern from Oparau residents by
extending the collection until a
decision was made.
ODC received petition calling on
recycling at Oparau to be retained at
its meeting on May 10 and heard from
community representatives.
There was a request to return the
area’s refuse collection day to
Wednesday.
Council resolved that:
1. The collection of official (collection
costs inclusive) Council refuse
bags continues from Oparau Roadhouse,
provided that drop-off of nonofficial
bags is not problematic.
2. Council is willing, in principle,
and subject to positive engagement
with the representatives of the
Oparau community, to provide some
one-off funding assistance for the
establishment (but not operation) of a
community run recycling facility
operated in Oparau, provided that
such an arrangement is agreeable to
EnviroWaste.
3. Council does not believe that
any further discussion of a potential
change of the kerbside collection day
in Kawhia/Aotea is warranted at this
time.
Council has advised the petition
presenters that if the residents of the
Oparau community wish to continue
with a recycling facility after June 1,
this will have to be organised and
managed by the community including
the disposal to an approved
facility.
‘‘Should your community wish to
pursue this option we will be happy
to work with you (and EnviroWaste if
necessary) to try to achieve a satisfactory
facility.’’
Dave Clibbery, ODC chief executive,
in one correspondence lauded
the efforts of Arohena community in
driving their own recycling initiative.
‘‘Arohena established a well
organised ‘zero waste’ group about
six years ago, and sought ODC assistance
to operate a facility, but when
that request was declined the group
sought funding to operate the facility
from the Zero Waste NZ Trust, and
against the odds obtained such
funding, and have continued to manage
and operate the facility at their
own cost, transporting collected
recyclables almost 50km to Otorohanga
— even after the obtained
‘Zero Waste’ funding ceased.
‘‘Waste minimisation is a strong
educational element at the school,
and the community has come
together, with the support of Council,
to upgrade the former school bus
shed that is now used as the recycling
centre. The community was recognised
by Zero Waste NZ as an
outstanding example of communityled
waste minimisation.’’
Oparau residents have not given
up hope of overturning ODC’s
decision and have gathered 117 signatures
on a submission they will be
making.
North Island robins return to Maungatautari
A small crowd of MEIT staff,
trustees, volunteers and wellwishers
was on hand last week to
welcome the return of North
Island robins to the
Maungatautari Ecological Island
— which have not been seen there
in living memory.
Wally Papa offered a short
karakia before the 40 birds (19
females and 21 males) were
individually released into their
new environment, one free of
relevant mammalian pests.
The robins were captured in
the Pureora Forest during a 10-day
ONE of the robins takes stock of its new environment.
Mr Smith was born
For many years he
worked overseas, variously
in such positions
as a senior design
engineer for a large UK
His specialty is setting
up refrigeration
systems on a commercial
scale, in New zealand
for such clients as
Fonterra, AFFCO and
Mr Smith has
Phil Simms an athlete going places
High school student to represent NZ at Oceania championships
BY HAMISH FORAMAN
Te Awamutu athlete Phil Simms has
capped off a brilliant season by being selected
to represent New Zealand at the under 20
Oceania Regional Athletics Championships.
The 17-year-old Hamilton Boys High
School student has been chosen to compete in
the 400 metre hurdles, long jump and relay at
the June 21-24 championships in Samoa.
Simms’ selection is another step in the
right direction towards his goal of qualifying
for next year’s World Junior Athletics Championships
in Barcelona.
His success this season began back in
December at the New Zealand Secondary
School Championships in Hastings, where he
finished third in the open boys 300 metre
hurdles.
From then on Simms punched above his
weight over the summer, being the youngest
in the Men’s under 19 years category at
various athletic meets.
He attended three of the four Asics Grand
Prix meets, a key event in the New Zealand
athletics calendar, and placed second overall
in the 400 metre hurdles.
The winner of the grand-prix was a full
three years older than him.
Around the same time as these meets,
Simms took part in the M19 decathlon at the
National Multi Event Championships in
Tauranga.
Despite having never pole vaulted before
he finished a credible third, winning four of
NEIL GOODRICK
Mob (027) 292 9040
ngoodrick@wilksbrooke.co.nz
the 10 decathlon events including the long
jump, 400 metres, 1500 metres and 110 metre
hurdles.
At the New Zealand club nationals held in
Dunedin in late March, Simms placed fourth
in the 110 metre hurdles, slashing 0.75
seconds off his personal best time. In his
favoured event, the 400 metre hurdles, he
brought home the silver medal with another
great personal best time of 54.28, taking 0.6
seconds off his previous best.
He was also in both Waikato relay teams
that won silver and bronze medals, which
included a new Waikato record in the 4x100
relay.
Back at school level Simms has been
dominant. At the Waikato Secondary School
Championships he won four medals — two
golds in the 300 metre hurdles and long jump,
and two silvers in the 100 metres and 400
metres. His winning long jump was another
record — a leap of 6.72 metres.
In the North Island Secondary School
Championships Simms again won gold
medals in the 300 metres hurdles and long
jump, with another personal best jump.
He very nearly also took out the 400
metres. A photo finish camera took 15
minutes to work out the winner and
unfortunately he missed out on first place by
0.003 seconds, after running a personal best
time of 49.48.
Simms expressed appreciation for the
ongoing support of his sponsor Kukri and
coach Criss Strange.
Pirongia newcomer to fore in women’s tourney
Jill Morgan took out the Sharon de
Thierry Tournament at Pirongia Women’s
Golf Club with 73 off-the-stick. The twohandicapper
recently joined the host club.
A large field was entered with 13 clubs
represented. Scoring in all three divisions
was of a high standard. Gross winner in
division one was Pirongia’s Bev Parsons with
84, one stroke ahead of Helen Green of
Hamilton. Gay Pickett (WT) and Wendy
Thompson (Wai) had best nett scores with 72.
Kitty Kanters of Ngahinapouri was div-
ision two gross winner carding 87, followed
by Lochiel’s Ali Patterson with 92. Nett
winner and runner up were Stewart
Alexander’s Carol Formosa and Margaret
Bouma, with 72 and 74 respectively.
Division three gross winner was Patty
Macintyre (Pir) who scored 99 with Shirley
Grey (Pir), runner up with 105. Nett winner
was Inez Green from Lochiel with 72, four
strokes ahead of Chris Ward (Pir). Nine hole
winners were host club players Judy Dunn
with 52 and Norma Graham with 39 nett.
Pony clubbers celebrate exchange milestone
TC240511CA02
NEW ZEALAND rider Oliver Steele negotiates the Kihikihi course on board ‘Once Upon a Chime’.
BY CATHY ASPLIN
A near faultless display by Canadian pony club riders saw
them claim the Nations Cup at Kihikihi Domain.
Hosts New Zealand pushed hard, but in the end had to
settle for the runners-up spot, ahead of Australia in third
place.
In all 25 pony club riders from the five nations (USA,
Canada, Hong Kong, Australia and New Zealand) competed in
the event which is contested every two years as part of the
Inter-Pacific Rally Exchange.
The exchange started 50 years ago in Victoria, Australia
and New Zealand has won the trophy nine times.
This is the fifth time New Zealand has hosted the event —
the last time was in 2001 when it was also held at Kihikihi.
Jason Wilson
Owner
While ‘home ground’ advantage usually works in most
sports, that isn’t the case for this event.
New Zealand has never won the trophy in New Zealand.
The riders, aged 17-21 years, competed on borrowed horses
over two rounds of showjumping at Kihikihi Domain.
While 25 horses are required for competitors, another 10
are also on hand as reserves. Organisers praised the high
calibre of horses generously provided by local owners.
The purpose of the two-yearly exchange is to enable pony
club members from different countries to learn about each
other’s countries and exchange ideas, especially about horses
and the various methods of training, riding and caring for
them.
The equestrian activities are the common bond between
teams to encourage the highest ideals of sportsmanship and
Marist hammer Fraser Tech 50-22
After beating competition
leaders Ohaupo last week,
Murray Gane Plumbing Te
Awamutu Marist targeted
their Waikato second division
club rugby game against
Fraser Tech in Hamilton on
Saturday for a bonus point
win.
The four try bonus point
was needed to consolidate
their place amongst the
leaders in what is a tight
competition.
Three tries in the first eight
minutes put Marist in good
shape and two more before
halftime for a 29-3 lead at the
break virtually had the points
in the bag.
Fraser Tech had no answer
for Marist’s sharp backline,
which is playing with speed
and confidence. Try scorers in
the first half were winger
Cody Bowen, who dotted down
twice, as did hard running
centre Ace Masalo, who
showed plenty of strength.
The other first half try
followed a fine lineout drive
from around the 22 finished off
by captain Mark Kahura.
Fraser Tech introduced
several new players at
halftime and while Marist
were not as dominant, they
still went over for three tries.
Kahura added his second
from another lineout drive.
Puhoi Heta, who had another
strong game, also crashed over
to score, while the final try
was a spectacular effort.
Fielding the kickoff, Marist
spun the ball wide, with backs
and forwards linking well,
before prop Troy Murray
proved unstoppable from
about 20 metres out, capping
off a good game for the former
Fraser Tech player.
Marist goalkickers
managed five conversions as
Marist ran out winners 50-22.
Marist weren’t happy conceding
22 points, but it will
give them something to work
on at training this week.
Redoubt Bar and Eatery
player of the day went to
halfback John Conner, while
Timmos Timber tackler of the
day was first five Ben Gisler
Marist are away again this
week to Hamilton Marist to
start off the second round.
After the first round,
Marist are lying in third position,
nine points behind
leaders Ohaupo, with a six
win/three loss record.
Mountain biking open day on
Pirongia trails proved big hit
Despite a rainy start, the
open day held by Waipa Mountain
Bike Club (known as
WAMOs) to display their new
Pirongia trails to the public
attracted an enthusiastic turnout
in numbers beyond all
expectation.
Riders of all ages arrived
from Pirongia and Te Awamutu
and as far afield as
Cambridge, Hamilton and
Otorohanga.
The trails run through
bush beyond the end of
Sainsbury Road on the eastern
mountainside. Trails on show
this time included a forestry
4x4 track running uphill, a
new single-track running back
down, the old bullock track
(single-track) further down
and the new gravelled kids
trail winding through bush
alongside a carpark, built to
accommodate riders’ cars.
The open day was a noncompetitive
event offering
guided tours to the public to
display trails that are now
open for free use by anyone on
pedal powered bikes (powered
bikes not permitted) .
There was a steady stream
of groups of riders going up
and down the mountainside
with club guides for the entire
morning.
Meanwhile there was much
action on the kids’ trail with
fun on see-saws, ramps and
obstacles and time trials to
establish ‘world records’ for
the short but sharply twisting
circuit.
To replace the huge
amounts of energy expended,
there were coffees for the
adults, free chocolate fish for
the kids, and free sausages for
everyone.
The weather smiled in the
end producing warm sunshine,
though the recent rain
left the high trails in a slippery
condition providing challenging
riding conditions.
Marist power
pullers star
The Southern Region Power Pulling Championships
in Hastings proved to be another successful
trip for Te Awamutu Marist Club.
Marist claimed both the men’s openweight and
middleweight titles, as well as recording a second
placed finish in the ladies openweight.
The men’s openweight team made up of Liz
Peehikuru (skipper), Richard Peehikuru, Allan
Francis, Chris Smith, Bill Greenbank and David
Peehikuru were made to work hard on their way to
the finals.
They started well with a win against arch rivals
Kio Kio Sports, after they worked an even breakout
into a 1.5 centimetre winning margin.
But in their second round they faced Kawerau,
who took the breakout by 1.5 centimetres. Marist got
it back to level terms, but Kawerau outlasted them to
win by 1.5 centimetres.
Marist then faced Kio Kio again with a place in
the final on the line. The break was even and in the
first minute Marist managed to gain a slim 0.5
centimetre advantage, which they hung onto until
the final whistle.
In the final Kawerau, with two lives, held the
breakout even. Some quality pressure from Marist
gained them a one centimetre lead, but Kawerau
recovered and pulled it back to the centre for a draw.
This forced a one minute repull after just two
minutes rest.
Marist took 1.5 centimetres on the breakout and
pushed on with some strong lifts to open up a 3.5
centimetres which Kawerau could not respond to.
In the repull of the final, Marist gained one
centimetre on the breakout and again staged an
early lift to get a two centimetre lead. Kawerau, now
exhausted, were unable to fight back and Marist had
the title by four centimetres.
Marist were favourites going into the men’s
middleweight against Western Suburbs (Hastings)
as they had three members of the openweight team
in their side. Bill Greenbank (skipper), Liz
Peehikuru and Allan Francis were joined by Matt
van Grootel, Joel Francis and Graham Smith. Marist
were totally dominant, winning both pulls by large
margins.
The ladies’ openweight was a tough fight for a
light Marist team. They lost their opening encounter
with Kio Kio Sports, won their second round against
Morenawhira (Morrinsville), but lost the final
against Kio Kio.
Two New Zealand power pulling events are
coming to the region over the next two weekends.
This Saturday the Alpha Hotel in Kihikihi will
host the New Zealand individual championships.
The one on one competition gives individuals a
chance to show their skills. A number of Marist
pullers currently hold titles and will be back to
defend them.
Then on June 4 the New Zealand team championships
will also be held at the Alpha Hotel.
