In Hamburg people
walk on water
Water as far as the eye can see
Almost 2,500 bridges cross the extensive maze of larger
and smaller canals between the rivers Elbe, Alster, and
Bille. The canals themselves are perfect for discovering
the hustle and bustle in the harbor, or the sleepy corners
of the Hanseatic city. Point of departure for most cruises
through Germany’s largest port and the Speicherstadt,
Hamburg’s historic depot district, are the Landungsbrücken,
the landing stages in whose proximity the world-famous
Fish Market is held every Sunday from 6 a.m.
Off to new shores!
The historic center of the harbor is the Speicherstadt district.
At the end of the 19th century, the most beautiful storehouse
complex in the world was built here. Against this imposing
backdrop, the new HafenCity – the HarborCity – is being built
on former port ground: one of the most significant urban
development projects in Europe will increase Hamburg’s
downtown area by 40 percent, thus reconnecting it more
closely to its lifeline, the Elbe river. On over 155 hectares
some 5,500 new apartments and 40,000 jobs are being
created – right in the heart of Hamburg and right by the
waterfront. The “leap across the Elbe” will then be the next
step of “Hamburg – the growing city.” In the decades to
come, it will connect the southern districts of Veddel and
Wilhelmsburg, as well as Harburg, more closely with the
northern center of the city, thus building the bridge from
the downtown area via the HafenCity all the way to
Harburg’s inland port, from which both sides of the Elbe
are going to profit.
Many people consider Hamburg one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Expanses of water and extensive park
areas, as well as the relatively sparse construction, offer room to live and air to breathe, attractive options for leisure
activities, and a nearly inexhaustible potential for further development. These special qualities, in combination with
the maritime atmosphere, the city’s open-minded residents, and the proximity to the North and Baltic Seas, make
Hamburg a jewel among the major cities of the world.
