The Use of <strong>Load</strong> <strong>Cells</strong><br />
Type of <strong>Load</strong> Cell<br />
Shear Beam Type<br />
With its thin profile structure and resistance to side forces, this type of load cell is used in a large number<br />
of industrial weighing systems and large-size scales. The plate on which the load cell is mounted, must be<br />
in such a structure that it can firmly handle a full load and other bending forces. The load is applied to the<br />
tip of the shear beam load cell that is screwed on to the plate.<br />
Tension Type<br />
Designed to measure tension and compression forces, S type load cells are generally used in testing<br />
equipment, for transforming mechanical scales to electronic systems and in crane weighing systems.<br />
Tension and compression forces are applied to the force points located at each side of the load cell. This<br />
type of load cell can be hung from above for use as tension type or installed to the floor for use as a<br />
compression type.<br />
Platform Type<br />
Thanks to their special design, these types of load cells are minimally effected by momentum forces. This<br />
allows a centrally located single load cell to weigh small and medium sized platforms. <strong>Load</strong> cell is affixed<br />
to the base with the platform mounted on the other end. The type of load cell is selected based on the size<br />
of the platform that will be used.<br />
Compression Type<br />
Number of <strong>Load</strong> <strong>Cells</strong><br />
Specifically preferred for use in heavy load measurements, compression type load cells are used in the<br />
weighing of trucks, trailers, trains and heavy silos. These types of load cells are installed on a solid ground<br />
and are applied the load vertically.<br />
The determining factor in the number of load cells to be used is the requirements and the composition of the weighing system. The<br />
most common solution is the placement of a load cell in every connecting point of the existing structure. For maintaining mechanical<br />
stability, the most ideal solution is to weigh the item with three load cells. An item that is weighed from three points will always<br />
stabilize itself and ensure the equal distribution of the weight. In order to ensure the even distribution of the load in weighing systems<br />
where more that one load cell is being used, the load cells must be placed in the same horizontal level and the structure must be<br />
protected against folds and bends.<br />
In certain situations, using S type load cells will provide a more stable solution. In applications where more than one load cell is<br />
being used, it is very important to have load cells that are of the same capacity as well as the same rated output.<br />

In order for the system to function properly with minimum amount of errors and maximum amount of accuracy, the load weight must<br />
be properly conducted to the load cells. In weighing systems, forces perpendicular to gravity are measured. Forces from other<br />
directions are unwanted because these forces affect the sensitivity of the system. Mounting kits ensure the elimination of these<br />
unwanted forces and ensure proper and accurate measurements.<br />
The correct mounting kit must distribute the force perpendicular to the load cell and must be compatible with the operating principles<br />
of the load cell.<br />
Mounting kits are designed to protect the load cells against overloads, reduce vibrations and impacts and protect the system from<br />
being capsized in addition to ensuring the proper conducting of forces to load cells.<br />

Capacity Selection<br />
One can consider load cells as springs that mechanically bend to a very small degree (~0.4 mm). If the load cell selection is<br />
not made according to the requirements of the weighing system, the sensitivity of the system or the service life of its load cells<br />
will decrease.<br />
Determining <strong>Load</strong> Cell Error<br />
Before starting a weighing application based on load cells, the user must determine what error limits s/he is expecting from the<br />
weighing system. However, one should note that the smaller the error, the costlier the system will be! Class C3 load cells would be<br />
sufficient for commercial weighing systems.<br />

As a general rule of thumb, the error of a load cell based weighing system will be 1.3 times greater than that of the load cell it is using.<br />
This is due to the errors from the construction and electronic parts.<br />

OIML Certificate of Conformity<br />
The International Organization of Legal Metrology (OIML) is an intergovernmental treaty organization. It was<br />
established in 1955 in order to promote the global harmonization of legal metrology procedures. Since that time, the<br />
OIML has developed a worldwide technical structure that provides its Members with metrological guidelines for the<br />
elaboration of national and regional requirements concerning the manufacture and use of measuring instruments<br />
for legal metrology applications.<br />
The OIML certificates are issued by authorities assigned by the International Committee of Legal Metrology (CIML)<br />
and they are archived by the International Bureau of Legal Metrology (BIML). This certificate is required for<br />
commercial scales and Esit has 3 certifications in mass measurement and non-automatic mass measurement<br />

CE Quality Certificate<br />
The CE marking on a product is a manufacturer's declaration that the product complies with the essential<br />
requirements of the relevant European health, safety and environmental protection legislations and ensures the free<br />
movement of the product within the EFTA & European Union (EU) single market.<br />
The CE marking directives, which were approved by the EU member states in 1985, were recognized by the Turkish<br />
authorities in 2002-2003. However, they have not yet been put into practice due to lack of adequate infrastructure<br />
and legislation. Related preparations are expected to be in place by 2006. “90/384/AT Non-automatic Weighing<br />
Instruments Directive”, regulating the production, inspection, certification, launching and market inspection of<br />
commercial scales, is one of the EU directives to be enacted by the end of 2005.<br />
In order to comply with this new standard which will change virtually everything in weighing instrument<br />
manufacturing industry, from design and production to inspection and legal marking, Esit has already completed all<br />
the necessary studies for establishing the required infrastructure. As an alternative way for inspection and marking,<br />
the new directive recommends the manufacturers to inspect and mark their products themselves. As a result of its<br />
negotiations with the Danish Standards Association (DS), Esit is found qualified to inspect and mark its own<br />
products.<br />
With this approval from DS, Esit has shown to the European Union that the Company is competent in this industry<br />
and that its scales are produced to the European standards.<br />
Ex-Proof Certificate<br />
Certificate of Conformity to Ex Quality is given to those companies which are eligible for receiving the Certificate of<br />
Production Adequacy. The Ex-Proof Certificate indicates conformity of electrical products used in the presence of<br />
flammable and combustible gases to the Quality Factors and Standards defined by the Turkish Standards Institution<br />
(TSE). Within the framework of a one-year license agreement signed between the Company and TSE, the<br />
Trademarks, types and classes of the products which will bear TSE-ex marking are defined.<br />
Production Quality Certificate<br />
Today's major developments in science and techology, beside creating an ever-evolving economic environment,<br />
have led the nations to a tough competition. Surviving in this new world order is only possible via providing goods<br />
and services that meet customers' needs and expectations. Therefore a comprehensive and progressive Quality<br />
Management System, which covers all levels of production from design and production down to marketing and after<br />
sales services, must be strictly implemented. Among such international standars, ISO 9000 Quality System<br />
Standards have a distinct place in terms of implementation diversity.<br />
Esit has been implementing the ISO 9001 quality system standards since 1997. The Company received its ISO<br />
certificates from RW-TUW until 2005, but this year the certificate was issued by another issuing authority, the Danish<br />
Standards Association (DS) after a successful inspection process.<br />

The SSB-S shear beam load cell has been developed for use in electronic weight and force measurement applications under<br />
industrial conditions. The precise and rugged SSB load cell offers high resistance to side forces and overload conditions.<br />
The stainless steel SSB shear beam load cell can be used under the most severe industrial conditios. With a fully welded strain<br />
gauge area, SSB is protected to IP68 standards and is resistant to water and other chemicals. The product finds application in<br />
medium capacity platform scales, tank weighing systems, automatic weighing equipment and process weighing applications in<br />

IP68 industrial protection<br />
WTB cable tension type load cells are designed specially for cranes and lifting systems. They are mounted on the permanent cables<br />
of the lifting mechanism and they sense the load exerted on the cables.<br />
With its stainless steel construction as well as its welded strain gauge area, WTB is protected to IP68 standards meaning that it is<br />
fully resistant to dust, water and chemicals.<br />
WTB load cells provide overload control for such lifting machines as cranes and elevators, and measure the weight of the load being<br />
lifted.<br />

Esit CRLC load cell is a tension type force sensor, which feature safety plates and washers on each side for protection against<br />
overloads. With its steel alloy construction coated with corrosion-returdant paint, the CRLC is protected to IP66 standards meaning<br />
that it is fully resistant to dust and water.<br />
They are used for overload detection and measure the weight of the load being lifted by cranes and lifting machines.<br />
