Germany lies in the heart of Europe, both geographically
and culturally. The unified Federal Republic of
Germany has a total of nine neighbouring countries:
those to the west (the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg,
and France) can be reached very easily from
Bonn by train.
As a member of the EU, Germany connects western
Europe with eastern Europe. Germany has a population
of around 82 million, which makes it the most
heavily populated country in Europe.
German is the native language of over 100 million
people, making it the most widely used language in
Europe. Besides Germany, German is also spoken
in Austria, Liechtenstein, and parts of Switzerland,
Bonn: a city where
you feel at home as
soon as you arrive!
8 Guide for ERASMUS Students
Bonn – Federal City on the Rhine
Germany’s United Nation City; capital city from 1949 to 1990; Beethoven City;
University City. Behind the many faces of the city of Bonn stand 2000 years of
changing history.
316,000 people from 170 nations live in Bonn. One in seven has a foreign passport.
The birth-rate is high, and most inhabitants of Bonn are well-qualified and
multi-lingual. As a ’Compact City’, Bonn combines the convenience of a mediumsized
centre with the cultural diversity of a metropolis.
Between the years 13 and 9 B.C. the Romans built “Castra Bonnensia”. The “Villa
Basilica”, centred around the city’s cathedral (“Münster”), evolved from this Roman
settlement very quickly, and then turned into the town of residence for the
electors and archbishops of Cologne very fast. The city’s most famous son, Ludwig
van Beethoven, was born in Bonn in 1770 – the house he was born in can still
be visited today. The Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelm University, founded in 1818,
as well as the beautiful surrounding landscape of Bonn were beneficial for the
city’s rise in the nineteenth century, turning it into a romantic university city, an
intellectual venue and even one of the richest cities of Prussia.
In Germany, Bonn is associated with successful democratic renewal, thriving federalism,
as well as the European Unification. The Federal Republic of Germany

 Michael Sondermann, Stadt Bonn
was founded in Bonn in 1949, with Bonn as its federal capital. In 1991, the German
Parliament voted to relocate several government departments and agencies
as well as the Parliament itself from Bonn to Berlin.
Since the relocation in 1999, Bonn has undergone a remarkable development,
moving away from the image of being Germany’s capital to a new, independent
profile: as headquarters for global companies in such promising fields as telecommunication
and logistics, as the centre of a renowned scientific community and
as a UN City. Today, Bonn has more inhabitants than in 1991, a modern economic
structure, one of the smallest unemployment figures of North Rhine-Westphalia,
and what is more, it still maintains its above-average buying power.
As a result of its 50 years’ experience as the federal capital, Bonn is a second political
centre in Germany, and as the German UN City it is also an important location
for international collaboration. Nineteen organisations of the United Nations
as well as approximately 150 international organisations and non-governmental
organisations have their seat here. The UN Campus in Bonn stands as a visible
symbol of this development. In July 2006, Federal Chancellor Angela Merkel introduced
the campus to UN Secretary General Kofi Annan as the new United Nations
site in Bonn.
Bonn showed that it is still a city of political competence and international importance
by organising several World Climate Summits and hosting both the conference
“Rebuild Afghanistan – Peace and Stability” in December 2001 and the UN
Convention on Biological Diversity in May 2008.
10 Guide for ERASMUS Students
The University’s History
The University of Bonn is one of Germany’s leading universities, and its international
orientation in research and teaching has a long tradition. Founded in
1818, Bonn has always attracted eminent scholars and pro-mising young students
from all over the world. Today, international study programmes and the University’s
wide-ranging network of international partner institutions ensure that Bonn
will continue to attract international students and researchers. And what is more:
the international orientation of research and teaching is not only something that
we consider to be ‘nice to have’. Rather, it is a key component of our university’s
profile, a guiding principle in all our activities.
The University of Bonn has established a wide-ranging network of international
partners both on the institutional and interpersonal level: active cooperation and
exchange agreements with more than 300 institutions form a sound basis for our
international position. And as you read this, academics from Bonn will be working
in more than 1,500 international research groups or projects with colleagues from
around the globe. The University strongly supports further collaboration initiatives
with other universities and research institutions, not least because research collaboration
also benefits the students and graduates embarking on a university career.
Studying at the University of Bonn is very international. Approximately 14% of
our students are from abroad, so you are very likely to meet one of these 4,000 students
on campus or in town. Together with the 500 – 600 Bonn students who study
abroad in one of the University’s exchange programmes or an international scholarship
programme, they benefit from Bonn’s cooperation agreements with more
than 250 partners in 27 European countries and more than 50 partners outside
Europe. German and international students cannot only choose from numerous international
B.A., M.A. and PhD programmes which are either partially or entirely
taught in English. In double-degree Bachelor and Master programmes students

have the opportunity to spend part of their studies abroad and receive degrees from
both participating universities.
For 50 years the University has built a reputation in hosting students from around
the world in its immersion study abroad programmes. Each year about 500 students
participate in the semester- or year-long exchange and Junior Year abroad
programmes or come to Bonn for a spring or summer programme focusing, for
example, on German literature and language, transatlantic issues, or research in the
Life Sciences. Each programme offers a unique mix of study and research opportunities,
German courses, cultural programme, and immersion into the university’s
and city’s life. The wide range of courses offered, an outstanding reputation in
teaching and research, and its unique location make Bonn an especially attractive
place to study and live, so that many students decide to stay on or return later.
The Friedrich-Wilhelms-University of Bonn also plays a decisive role in the city,
as its institutes, seminars and clinics can be found in various parts of town. The
main building, which houses the two faculties of Theology, the Faculty of Philosophy
and the administrative body, is situated in the city centre, along with the
Law Faculty and the University Library. Most institutes belonging to the Faculty
of Natural Sciences and the Faculty of Agriculture, however, have their premises
in the municipal districts Endenich and Poppelsdorf. The University of Bonn’s
Botanical Garden in Poppelsdorf is one of the oldest in the world, boasting an
extraordinary number of species. Its eleven greenhouses, called the “living museums”,
feature plants such as water lilies with leaves able to carry as much as 80
kilograms of weight.
The Faculty of Agriculture uses various farms in the area of Bonn for experimental
research. Most of the clinics belonging to the Faculty of Medicine are situated in
a hospital complex on a hill called Venusberg. In the Eifel region, the Max Planck
Institute operates a 100-metre radiotelescope.
Visa Regulations
Students from EU/EFTA countries, including the new EU countries, do not
require a visa for their stay in Germany.
Students from Turkey require a student visa for entering Germany. You should
apply for your visa at the German Embassy or Consulate of your home country
at least 6 weeks prior to your departure. To obtain a residence permit in Germany
after your arrival in Bonn, you also need evidence of sufficient funds or scholarships
to cover your living costs during your study period (approx. € 585 per
month).
If you plan to do an internship in Germany outside an officially recognised
organisation (such as ZAV, ERASMUS, IAESTE, AIESEC) and exceeding 3
months’ time, you need to inform the German Embassy or the Consulate when
applying for your visa. Before a visa is granted, inquiries will be made regarding
the issuing of a work permit at the local Employment Office in Germany. To simplify
formalities, please have your ERASMUS departmental co-ordinator, or any
other professor of your department at the University of Bonn, send you a letter of
confirmation that the internship is supervised by the university.
Valid Identification Papers
Please ensure that your identity card or passport is valid for the entire duration of
your stay in Germany.
Health Insurance
In Germany, all students must have a health insurance
Students from EU and EFTA countries or students from countries that hold
healthcare agreements with Germany require a European Health Insurance Card
or A/T 11 form (Turkey). Both documents are available from the health insurance
institutions in your home country.
Students from non-EU/EFTA countries should check whether their (private) health
insurance offers sufficient coverage in Germany. If this is not the case, you should
get in contact with one of the public statutory health insurance companies immediately
after arriving in Germany in order to obtain health insurance (e.g. AOK,
DAK, Techniker Krankenkasse, Barmer Ersatzkasse; approx. € 60 per month).

Please bring a certification of your ERASMUS grant with you. You will need
this document to demonstrate your financial situation when registering with the
Money and Cost of Living
Upon arrival, please ensure that you have at least € 500 at your immediate
disposal to cover such costs as:
When enrolling at the University of Bonn, all students must pay a semester contribution
of approx. € 210. This contribution includes:
► The Semesterticket: valid for public transport in Bonn and the surrounding
area for the duration of one semester (Apr-Sep and Oct-Mar).
► A membership contribution for the student-run services (Students’ Union,
student body of the departments).
► A contribution fee towards student social institutions and the Studentenwerk
that runs the student restaurant (Mensa) as well as the halls of residence.
► A contribution fee towards the Hochschulsport (student gym), which students
use free of charge (with some exceptions).
Within the first few days after your arrival, you must pay the first month’s rent,
which varies between € 163 and € 320. You should have paid your deposit before
your arrival.
You will have to make all these payments by means of bank transfer. Cash or
credit cards are not accepted. Since withdrawing money with Visa or Mastercard
is usually expensive, you should bring along enough cash money for the first
days and weeks.
Although Bonn is not the most expensive place in Germany the cost of living
is relatively high. Of course, monthly costs fluctuate with the expenses for rent,
coupled with your individual life style. However, you should expect an average
monthly budget of approx. € 620.
The Best Time to Arrive in Bonn
Students attending a language course or the orientation programme must arrive
on the date that will have been indicated to them.
Please do not arrive on weekends or late in the evening as staff and contact persons
will not be available for you then (see also: “3. Moving into your Accommodation”).
Getting to Bonn
Three airports – Frankfurt am Main, Düsseldorf and Cologne/Bonn – connect
Bonn with the rest of the world.
The Cologne/Bonn airport is just 35km from Bonn. Take busline 670. Buses run
every 20-30 minutes from the airport, directly to the main train station in Bonn.
The journey takes around 30 minutes. The ticket costs ca. € 5 (YOU MUST PAY
IN CASH!).
It is very easy to travel from Düsseldorf to Bonn by train (Deutsche Bahn).
Trains run about every 15 mins. A single ticket costs around € 22. The journey
takes around 1 hour.
The way from Frankfurt airport to Bonn is covered most easily by train as well.
Trains run twice every hour, and the journey takes between 75 and 120 minutes.
Single tickets cost between € 33 and € 60.
Tickets for travelling with Deutsche Bahn can be bought at the station in the
„Reisezentrum“ (Travel Centre), or from the ticket machines. Credit cards are
accepted.
B
Your Arrival in Bonn
Please arrive during the day. If you arrive in Bonn during the week, you should
first go to the Housing Services desk („Studentenwerk“) during office hours
(9am – 12pm) to sign your tenancy contract. Once you have signed the contract
you can move into your room. The keys can be collected either from the manager
of the dormitory or from the tutor for foreign students (“Ausländertutor“ – see
below ) in your dormitory.
Nassestr. 11
Office hours: Mon to Fri: 9am to 12pm and Thu 2pm to 4pm
Each dormitory provides a so-called “Ausländertutor” for your assistance. This is
a special tutor for foreign students working on a voluntary basis. Please contact
your tutor at least 2-3 weeks prior to your arrival in Bonn to make sure that he
or she is informed and will be available at the time you arrive at your dormitory.
This is particularly important if you plan to arrive outside the regular office hours
and need to collect your room keys from the tutor. The “Ausländertutoren” are
available during “normal” hours, so please do not arrive after 10 pm.
The email addresses of the tutors for foreign students can be found at:
If you come to Bonn before you are able to move into your dormitory room, you
need to stay at a hotel, or less expensively, at a youth hostel. That also applies when
you arrive outside the office hours of the Studentenwerk without having informed
your tutor in advance. If you arrive in Bonn very late (after 10 pm), you should also
spend the night at a hotel or a youth hostel so that you don’t have to call your tutor
in the middle of the night.
Students from non-EU countries:
If you need to extend your working time, you must submit an application for a
work permit to the Employment Office (Agentur für Arbeit), enclosing a personalised
job description (i.e. your future employer must declare why they want to
employ you). Allow approx. 6 to 8 weeks for the processing of your request. The
work permit you obtain is limited to a single employer (i.e. it is valid for one job
only) and depends on your current residence permit.
The regulations mentioned above also apply to those internships that would
exceed a duration of three months within a time period of 12 months. Students
who, because of their country of origin, require visas in order for them to enter
Germany, in any case need a corresponding entry permit which would allow
them to do an internship.
Opening a Bank Account
Soon after your arrival, you should consider opening a personal bank account
(debit/savings account) with a local bank. Students generally receive a debit
account free of charge. However, please inquire about the exact conditions at the
bank of your choice.
A debit account makes it easy for you to administrate transactions that need to
be made on a regular basis such as rent payments, your semester contribution fee
or telephone line by direct debiting, credit transfer or standing orders. Standing
orders, for example, offer you an easy and stable method of payment for any ongoing
costs and an option of recalling falsly debited entries.
You must present the following:
• passport
• your proof of registration with the City of Bonn
• your (preliminary)student ID
• some money
facilities such as the canteen. Students also receive fee reductions at many
theatres, museums, cinemas, etc.
In addition, your student ID is only valid in combination with a picture ID, thus
you should always carry a valid ID or passport with you. This is of great importance
when you use your student ID / semester ticket as a ticket for the public
The new Bachelor and Master courses of studies consist of modules and there is
no longer a differentiation between Grundstudium and Hauptstudium. The modules
consist of thematic courses (lectures, classes and seminars), and you must
register to take the module. For information about the registration for modules,
please contact your departmental ERASMUS co-ordinator.
When you have passed a module through an exam at the end of the course you
will automatically receive credit points which can be certified in a Transcript of
records. These transcripts are managed by the electronical examination records
of the respective seminars. Usually, ERASMUS students will obtain a separate
transcript from their ERASMUS co-ordinator.
ERASMUS-students may be allowed to take only one part of a module in an
exam (Teilmodul-Prüfung). Please speak to your ERASMUS departmental coordinator
for details.
Individual departments provide a module-handbook which lists more information
about those modules; these are often available online. You can find more information
about modules and credit points on the webpage of your department.
Important! Based on a Learning Agreement, you should decide which courses you
are going to take prior to your arrival in Bonn (it is possible to ask your co-ordinator
for advice). After your arrival, however, discussing your individual timetable
with your ERASMUS departmental co-ordinator is highly recommended!
eCampus is an electronic teaching and learning platform. In addition to courses
Cafés, Pubs, Restaurants, Night Clubs
There is a wide range of cafés, pubs, restaurants and nightclubs in both the centre
of Bonn and its surrounding areas. Ambience, great coffee, large breakfasts, good
food, clubs for the night owls, and of course beer gardens for summer evenings
– there is something for everybody.
Tips and further information on pubs and clubs can be found in the Bonn magazine,
„Schnüss“, and under: www.bonnaparte.de or www.bonnxxl.de.
You are not required to leave a tip in restaurants and cafés, however it is customary
to leave one when the bill is being served at your table. The amount of the tip
is linked to the friendliness of the staff, the quality of the food and service and is
completely up to you (approx. between 5 and 10% of the bill).
Shopping in Bonn
There are plenty of opportunities to go shopping in Bonn. In the city centre – between
Münsterplatz, Friedensplatz and Marktplatz – a large number of clothing- ,
shoe- and large department stores, such as KAUFHOF and KARSTADT, offer
almost everything from sportswear or electronic devices to kitchen and bathroom
equipment. There is also a large food section inside Kaufhof, although it is a little
more expensive than the other larger supermarkets.
Branches of the large German supermarket chains ALDI, LIDL, EDEKA, HIT
and others are located in every quarter of Bonn. You will also find Turkish,
Arabic and Asian greengrocers or supermarkets spread across the city, especially
in the Old Town. Those stores are often cheaper than the larger chains regarding
fresh fruits and vegetables, and they also offer groceries much less common in
Germany. In addition, a growing number of organic stores and supermarkets exist
in Bonn. Simply contact your tutor at your dormitory to find the closest opportunity
for grocery shopping.
At the daily fruit market in front of the old town hall you will find fresh fruit
and vegetables (Mon - Fri 8am – 6.30pm and Sat 8am – 4pm). There are smaller
markets in the different town districts, too.
The largest flea-market is the one in the “Rheinaue”, every first Sunday of the
month, from May to October.
Affordable stationery can be bought at the AStA-Shop at the Nassestraße and at
the Poppelsdorf Mensa (page 35).
Books for both your studies and your spare time (as well as course catalogues)
can be found at BÜCHER BEHRENDT and BOUVIER (both located close to
the main building, Am Hof) and in other smaller book stores.
Opening hours of supermarkets and stores: Mon – Sat: 8am/9.30am – 8pm/10pm
Regional Attractions
Cologne is only 25 train minutes away from Bonn. Trains run two to three times
an hour. Regional trains can be used free of charge, just with your student ID. In
Cologne you can visit the famous Cathedral or the historical “Altstadt”, go on a
boat trip on the Rhine or just do some shopping. There are many bars, restaurants
and night clubs for dancing the night away. For information about Cologne,
which is slightly bigger than Bonn, please visit:
www.koeln.de
www.meine-stadt.de/koeln
www.bartime.de
www.koelner-dom.de
Between Bonn and Cologne there is Brühl (trains to Cologne stop at the Brühl
station, there are shuttles from there to the park) and the “Phantasialand”, which
is the biggest theme park in the area. Day ticket € 26-33.
Open Apr-Oct 9am – 6pm
www.phantasialand.de
In addition, the beautiful Castle of Brühl with its park can be visited. It is located
just next to the train station in Brühl.
You can reach it with S-Bahn Line 66. A beautiful town with a well-known
Benedictine monastery. Also renowned for its medieval Christmas market in
December
The beautiful hills rising up from the banks of the Rhine are a popular destination
for day trips and hiking. You can visit the Drachenfels with its ruins, the “Löwenburg”
or the Ölberg. A good starting point for hiking is Königswinter (S-Bahn
Line 66). Further info: www.naturpark-siebengebirge.de
A good way of experiencing the views of the hillsides is by going on a cruise
along the river. With the boats of the KD, the “Weißen Flotte“ or the “Personenschifffahrt
Siebengebirge” you can go on a cruise on the Rhine, to Linz,
Remagen or Bad Breisig. The journey is especially beautiful travelling towards
Koblenz since the river banks in the direction of Cologne have a less magnificent
landscape. You can see old castles, vineyards, the famous Loreley rock and many
of the old beautiful smaller towns. More information under:
North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) is Germany’s most densely settled state, and visiting
cities such as Münster, Düsseldorf or Aachen will be worth your while, and
with your NRW-ticket travelling comes at no cost. In addition, Koblenz, Trier or
Maastricht (in the Netherlands) are also within reach and tickets are relatively
inexpensive. When purchasing a railway ticket, you should always mention that
Public Transport in the Bonn area
With your student ID and a valid passport, you may use all means of public
transportation within the region covered by the transport association Rhein-
Sieg (VRS) and in the whole of North Rhine-Westphalia. This is made possible
through your payment for the semester ticket along with your social contribution
upon enrolment. Each semester ticket is valid for the duration of one semester
(October 1st – March 31st and April 1st – September 30th, respectively), including
holidays. In NRW, you may thus use busses, trams and trains free of extra
charge operated by Deutsche Bahn. These are: Regionalexpress (RE), Regionalbahn
(RB) and S-Bahn. In addition, you may also take certain trains operated by
Deutsche Bahn if you pay a surcharge. At the AStA or the university, you will receive
more information on the exact validity of the ticket within the VRS region
(Bonn and surrounding area, but also Cologne, for instance), and on its additional
coverage in the VRS region which includes free transport of a bicycle or the possibility
to share the ticket with another person after 7pm and on Sundays and on
public holidays around the clock.
It is not really advisable to buy a car to get around; especially since parking fees
are high almost everywhere within Bonn´s city centre. Students living close to
the city centre will soon find bicycles a far better option. Bikes are also fun for
weekend trips around the Bonn area and can be taken on to the riverboats for a
fee of approx. € 1.
Unfortunately, expensive bikes are very likely to be stolen. You might want to
buy a bike second-hand and resell it on returning home. Check for ads on the
university’s notice boards or visit the bicycle fair held alongside the university’s
main building (to the side of the Hofgarten) every semester.
Car-pools
E
Living in Bonn
Getting Around in Germany
Among all means of transportation, trains and cars should be considered foremost
for travelling within Germany. Car pooling, using a BahnCard or capitalizing on
special offers of Deutsche Bahn to obtain cheaper train tickets can make your
travel less expensive. In Germany, bus travel is rather uncommon, but recently
more long-range bus connections between the larger German cities and also to
destinations abroad have been established.
For long-distance travels within Germany, one should certainly see a travel agent
and ask for special offers (for students or in general) for air travel. Taking a plane
might be cheaper than travelling without discount by train. From an ecological
point of view, however, taking the train is definitely most reasonable.
Low priced flights can be found at:
www.germanwings.de; www.hlx.com;
www.tuifly.de; www.flydba.de; www.airberlin.de
Car-pools are a good option if you want to go from one big city to another, but
not if you are heading for a remote location or if you have to be there at a precise
time. Sometimes it´s quite easy to find somebody with a car going into the
same direction as you, at a time that suits you, and share the expenses for petrol
(depending on how many people are going, your share would be either 50% or
25%, etc.). If you are taking your own car, you may want to look for fellowdrivers
yourself in order to save on petrol. There are always offers and requests
and Mensa Poppelsdorf).
An even more promising way to find a car-pool is to contact a car-pooling agency
or Mitfahrzentrale. More information on www.mitfahrzentrale.de
The main station (Bonn Hauptbahnhof) is located very close to the city centre,
the “pedestrian precinct” (shopping area) and the university’s main building.
Train fares are quite expensive in Germany, but there are various discount
options. If you plan to use the German railway system on a regular basis, you
should think about getting the discount ticket “Bahncard 25” for € 57 (for 2nd
class). The Bahncard is valid for 12 months, entitling you to a 25% discount on
the entire German railway system and a 25% discount on some reductions.
If you are under the age of 26, you may wish to purchase a BahnCard 50 for €
115 (regular prize is € 225 for second class travel). BahnCard 50 entitles you to a
50% discount on train ticket prizes for twelve months.
With the Saver Tickets for Europe (Europa-Sparpreis) you can save money on
train fares in 16 European countries.
A “Happy Weekend Group Ticket” (SchönesWochenend-Ticket, approx. € 30) is
valid on Saturdays or Sundays for up to 5 people travelling together, and allows
unlimited travel on local trains (Regionalbahn, Stadtexpress, S-Bahn) from midnight
to 3am the following day.
For rail travel outside Germany it’s always a good idea to ask at the travel centre
at the main station for discounts or special offers. For instance, the InterRail-
Ticket (also available for people older than 26) offers an inexpensive way of
travel.
If you book early you can often save up to 50%. Information on special offers is
available at the travel centre in the main station and at this address: www.bahn.de
Since there are so many different and quickly changing offers for travelling by
train (with the DB) you should make it your rule to always ask the conductor, or
at the service and travel counters – no matter if you are not sure about tickets,
routes or discounts, make sure you have all the necessary information and a valid
ticket. Since all those offers can be confusing at times, feel free to always check
in person.

public broadcasting corporations. This GEZ also regularly inspects the student
halls, as well as private homes, through unannounced visits in order to find out
the inspectors access to your private rooms. Registration forms are available in
In some cases there is a remission available at the Office for Social Affairs (Amt
The German recycling system uses colour labels to show which type of materials
should be deposited separately. You may have already noticed the variety of trash
cans in your hall of residence or in the city.
blue trash can paper and paperboard
Yellow trash can plastic wrappings (such as yoghurt cups, cans made of
tin foil, plastic foils, Tetrapak milk and juice packages)
Green trash can organic waste
Grey trash can
Glass bottles and glasses which have been bought without leaving a deposit are
collected in special glass containers, frequently situated all over the city. Bottles
are separated according to the colour of the glass (green, brown and white).
Bottles with refundable deposit:
When you are purchasing beverages in Germany you will often have to pay a refundable
deposit for bottles and recently also for cans. Upon returning the empty
bottle or can to the store, you will get back your deposit (the so-called „Pfand“).
So before getting rid of your bottles in one of the glass containers, make sure the
label does not indicate a “Pfandflasche“.
There are also recycle bins for non-rechargable batteries in many student halls
and supermarkets.
