Every year the World Packaging Organisation hosts and organizes the WorldStar 

Awards programme and on each occasion there are entries that reveal excellence in 

design, innovation and exceed expectations for those for whom the packages are 

designed. 

On behalf of the World Packaging Organisation and those involved in the supply 

chain we congratulate all who are successful recipients of a WorldStar Award. We 

hope that this achievement in excellence will support your organisation’s status and 

success. 

The entries for the WorldStar 2007 competition revealed the challenges facing the 

global packaging industry. Sustainability requirements and solutions were strongly in 

evidence and the World Packaging Organisation has responded by introducing an 

award that stimulates and rewards packaging design that meets the holistic 

requirements of caring for the environment as well as catering for social upliftment as 

well as supporting companies drive for excellence in profitability. 

The WPO mission of supporting “Better Quality Of Life Through Better Packaging 

For More People” receives an expression through the WorldStar Awards programme 

and the President’s Award further stimulates the art and science of packaging design. 

President’s Awards are presented in the categories of Gold, Silver and Bronze. These 

awards reflect, superior package design, innovation and consumer appeal. The 

eventual award winners will be announced in Accra, Ghana during the WorldStar 

Awards evening on the 21 May 2008.

Without doubt the emphasis on sustainability will increase and the packaging industry 

will be challenged to provide solutions that are manufactured from renewable 

resources, eliminate toxins, support the reduction of the weight of materials used in 

the manufacture of packaging, packaging recycling, supports the increases in 

productivity, reduces carbon footprint, offers increased safety and security as well as 

offering increased consumer appeal. 

The jury for judging this year’s WorldStar Awards undertook their duties in Athens 

during October 07. The location where the judging took place was a short distance 

from the Acropolis which was a reminder that society is ever evolving and changing

and WPO will always play a meaningful roll in being part of the process that 

encourages meaningful change in the area of packaging and proof of the 

organisation’s relevance is the fact that 2008 will see WPO celebrating its 40 th 

anniversary.

PP Packaging is designed for high marketing value and customer convenience. The pot resists a hot 

filling temperature 65ºC and is labelled by IML label made from PP for an easier recycling. The 

special lid, made from PP material, contains an integrated spoon-knife. Self-adhesive PP label with 

deactivated stick enables even after an exception of tool full keeping of function of clip-over lid 

also when the product has not been consumed completely.

Duma Desiccant Cap 

The Duma® Desiccant cap for pharma tablet containers is seen as a pioneering innovation in terms 

of safety and economy. Up till now, the desiccant which absorbs moisture was produced separately 

from the closure and incorporated later as an outsourced component. Now the multi-function 

plastic products are produced in one single process – with the integrated desiccant. This implies 

exclusion of external influences and facilitates registration for the pharma industry. 


Heineken 10 L - Beer Keg 

10L beer keg with integrated pressure system (Heineken Patent), beer stays fresh for 30 days after 

opening. This Keg is co-developed by Impress and Heineken. The TenCan can be used in a 

Draught Beer installation, called Xtreme Draught that was developed by Heineken. The special 

task for this keg, is a pressure resistance with at min. 5 bar. This is reached by a special shaping of 

Top and Bottom and a shaped body with an extreme expanding rate. 


TransPanther 

Corrugated-board sheets are produced with one or more transponders and the boards are then 

printed, die-cut, folded and glued to finished packaging with built-in information carriers, which 

are always located under a closed surface and therefore are protected against manipulation or theft; 

packaging design also remains unaffected. The transponder cannot be removed without damaging 

the packaging and it is safe from external influences such as dirt.

Vaso Desechable con Cuchara Rotatoria 

The "Disposable recipient with rotatory spoon" has been specially designed for the "take Hawal 

drinks" businefss. With the new design, the spoon goes through the central groove of the lid and is 

permitted to turn 360º in both directions, thus the liquid in the cup is completely stirred. The simple 

device saves the disadvantages that presents its precedent, like the fact that the users must take off 

the lid every time they want to remove the liquid with the constant loss of temperature and 

annoyance for the user.

BURGOPAK 

BURGOPAK packaging design employs a patented operating system, which 

presents the product in a sliding tray. It can be used for a wide range of 

products, including mobile phones, SIM cards and other electronic goods. The 

BURGOPAK offers particular advantages for pills and capsules in blister packs 

as it is easier to access and the user leaflet is conveniently packed with the pills. 

Due to the sliding mechanism, the packages are difficult to counterfeit.

A new brand Sarita was launched in 330ml non-returnable glass bottles in the 

alcoholic fruit beverage category, and this brand sits at the top end of the 

market. The bottle had to stretch the existing bottle design concepts, and allow 

heavy embossing & debossing, and 1 option was selected on consumer 

response. It was further enhanced with Rip Tab closure, a unique local crown

Brief was to design a pack that could hold product with ice for an extended 

period to ensure chilling for consumption.The inner liner is a one piece hand 

folded leakproof design made from Coldpak material and poly-coated on both 

sides. The result has been the celebrated Savanna Chill Pack, with its 

distinctive design depicting condensation, that holds 12 x 330ml bottles, and 

has become a firm favourite in South Africa.

Mondi "Retail Redy" wine pack 

In response to pressure from export customers the pack was designed to be 

opened by hand, carried and displayed in-store, and easy to "breakdown" after 

use. Pack has been adopted by Tesco and approved for shipping wine. 

Produced using a new paper engineered for Mondi. It has a semi-gloss finish 

and the patented design allows top flaps to hide perforated strip, with tearstrip 

that pulls off cleanly. Will promote SA wines overseas.

Peroni wrap-around display carton 

The task was to produce a distribution pack that could convert to a retail 

display with easy access to the 3 x 6-packs of SAB-Miller premium beer 

Peroni. The pack had to be sturdy to protect the glass bottles and yet maintain 

the brand image and quality on all 4 sides even when the pack was opened as a 

display. Precise print and cutting matched branding, and good perforation 

allowed panels to be removed easily without defacing the pack.

Packing for the souvenir set of vodka “Medoff” 

Construction of packing is octahedron, which reminds of the honeycombs, that 

harmoniously combines packing with the name of brand. An original designer 

decision allows compact to place four bottles of vodka in the middle, and

Bosch display carton for a lawn mover 

This complex packaging is made of corrugated board and consists of a box and 

3 types of inserts. Besides the protection and covering, the main function is to 

keep the attached blades inside. The purpose of the display is the presentation

Nokia-Nefab cost effective transport packaging for mobile phones 

If examined from total cost, environmental and marketing point of view - it is 

unique. Before the new packaging, a corrugated costly packaging was used by 

Nokia with lots of damages and unhappy customer. The new shrinkfilm

Zalai Nyomda Zrt. was called upon to design an egg-formed box for Easter 

seasonal KitKat sweeties by Nestlé Hungary. Zalai development team created 

the “KitKat Egg” box, an individual package for the KitKat Chunky bar, the 

chocolate Egg & Bunny. 

The Egg box is 265 mm high, and is made of 400 gsm GC2 carton, 4 colours

Rouge Unlimited package is the first fully transparent lipstick ever. It reveals 

the color of the formula contained, simplifying the shade selection for the

The WorldStar is the paramount 

international award for packages 

Since 1970, the World Packaging Organisation has awarded new packages 

from all around the world with a WorldStar. In the 2007 WorldStar Competition, 

291 packages from 32 countries were entered – 166 were awarded a prize. 

Six of these were nominated for being honoured with the prestigious title of 

President’s Award. 

The WorldStar Awards illustrate the continual advancement of the state of the 

packaging art, thereby creating a standard of international packaging excellence 

from which others may learn. WorldStar is presented to packages which have 

already won recognition in a national and/or regional competition. 

When entering WorldStar, packages are compared by an expert panel of judges to 

other, similar packages submitted from all around the world. Award decisions are 

based on the judges’ consensus that a package is superior to other packages in its 

category, when it comes to performance and the best in innovative design. 

The judges consider the following features in each package: 

• Protection and preservation of contents 

• Ease of handling, filling, closing, opening, reclosing 

• Adequacy of information 

• Sales appeal 

• Graphic Design 

• Quality of production 

• Economy of material, cost reduction 

• Environment compatibility, recyclability 

• Ingenuity of construction 

• Suitability for local conditions (production, materials, market etc.) 

All WorldStar winners are honoured at an award ceremony. The winners of 

WorldStar 2008 will be honoured in May, 2009 in Mexico. The winning packages 

are featured and published on www.worldpackaging.org. Once the competition 

results are announced, winning companies are free to use the WorldStar logo in 

marketing of their winning package. 

2008 WorldStar President’s Award 

All winning entries are automatically reviewed by the judges in order to select the 

package(s) for the title of ”President’s Award of the Year”. The judges select the 

entries to be nominated for a President’s Award. The winner(s) will be announced 

and honoured at the award giving ceremony. They will receive special mention in a 

press release and be displayed on the WPO website, www.worldpackaging.org.

Conditions of Entry 

1. Eligibility 

The WorldStar competition is open to any package or packaging material that has 

won a recognised domestic or international award related to packaging in 2007 or 

2008 (see www.worldpackaging.org for list of recognised competitions). Please 

contact the secretariate for advice. The package or packaging material may not 

have been submitted for consideration in an earlier WorldStar Program. 

2. Final date for entries 

Entry forms, statements, pictures and payment must reach the WPO Secretariat by 

10 September, 2008 at the latest. Entries will not be accepted after this date. 

3. Entry fee 

The entry fee is Euro 650 for the first entry. The fee for any additional package is 

Euro 500 each. Alternatives for payment are bank transfer, cheque or credit card. 

4. Entry procedure 

Entry form – complete and sign the entry form, including payment details. 

Pictures – two options 

• digital images (max. 2) in JPG-format (300 dpi, width 6 cm, height 5 cm) 

showing a good representation of the features of the package and labelled with 

the name of the packaging or 

• 35 mm color slides, max.2 (no glass slides), framed, clearly marked as to 

direction in which the slide should be presented and labelled with the name of 

the packaging. 

Overhead transparency or power point pictures will not be accepted. 

Mailing procedure – three options 

• e-mail entry form and pictures, while faxing copy of entry form with signature 

• send entry form and slides by air mail or courier 

• send both sides of entry form by fax and electronic pictures by e-mail 

N.B. Do not send your entry by any method requiring a customs declaration as this 

will cause delay and additional expenses for you. Do not send packaging samples. 

Slides and documents will not be returned. 

5. Judging 

The jury will meet 14-16 October, 2008, in Cape Town, South Africa. The jury’s 

decision is firm. The jury has the right to exclude entries not compatible to 

conditions of entry. The jury is entitled to re-assign a package to a different product 

category.

6. Announcement of results 

All participants will be notified during October / November, 2008. Winning packages 

will be announced in a press release and presented on www.worldpackaging.org. 

7. WorldStar Awards Ceremony 

The ceremony and banquet will take place in Mexico in May 2009.
