―Sounds of Tallulah‖ Bell Tower
SNAPSHOT OF GFWC GEORGIA, 2010- 2011
We have accomplished so much this year and I am
so proud of all the clubwomen in Georgia who have
responded to their community needs as well as
helping with all the changes that GFWC Georgia has
accepted. You answered Mary Ann Lipscomb‘s
question-―My sister‘s the question is not what you are
going to get out of the world, but what you are going
to give the world‖
Summer Institute
What a great time we had at the UGA Continuing
Education Center! We all learned about the
‗Community Service Programs‘ projects and were
inspired by UGA Football Coach Vince Dooley.
Tallulah Falls Middle School Campus
The Lodge at Tallulah Falls was transitioned into a
Middle School campus and the opening will be in
August with over 150 students in grades 6 th through
8 th !
Operation Christmas Child
Clubwomen embraced this project with 1040
clubwomen giving 4054 hours of work and donating
$20,005.00 and putting together 1,385 shoebox gifts
that were delivered to Samaritan‘s Purse collection
sites in Georgia. Gals, we are half way to our goal of
3,000 boxes. How fantastic is that!
Bell Tower Project
Can you believe that we
ordered a five foot tall
bronze bell from the
Netherlands, had it cast
and shipped to Tallulah
Falls School, displayed it
in the education building
and now it is up in the
tower ready to be heard for
miles around? Oh yeah,
that is exactly what we did!
Thanks to all of your
donations, we made this vision a reality. We have
collected right at $40,000.00 and that makes us halfway
towards our goal of $80,000.00. Let‘s keep your bell
ringing!
GFWC Signature Project: Domestic
Violence Awareness
Clubwomen in Georgia rally to put an end to sexual
assault and domestic violence. Twenty three clubwomen
attended the Domestic Violence Rally at our State
Capitol in Atlanta. Statewide- 200 projects, 2,838
volunteer hours, and $30,000 in donations were
reported.
Communication and Identity
Clubwomen throughout Georgia embraced the new
GFWC marketing plan by putting ―GFWC‖ in front of their
club names.
Fundraising
Georgia clubwomen worked hard to earn money to make
their communities a better place to live. We worked on
178 projects and recorded 32,353 hours and raised
almost $600,000.00. Wow!!
Leadership
Georgia is fortunate to have great leadership in our state.
Our Life Directors are always available as well as the
GFWC Georgia Officers. We grow our leadership and
that is something not all states do. This year our LEADS
candidate is Lisa Smith, from the GFWC Tifton Twentieth
Century Library Club in Tifton, Georgia. Congratulations
Lisa!
Legislation and Public Policy
Georgia remains on the cutting edge in keeping up with
current legislation. We have a history of legislative
success and we remain a force to be reconciled with. We
recorded 328 projects, volunteered 3,158 hours, and
donated $22,308 in donations.
Women’s History and Resource Center
We started our own ―Lipscomb Society‖. This is our state
Conference
Georgia Juniors had a great
time in Callaway Gardens at
Convention last April. The
Junior Luncheon was a real
snapshot of the GFWC
Georgia Junior Conference
past, present and future. It was wonderful to
have the help of the Past Directors of Junior
Clubs with the Junior Conference Awards
presentation. Thank you to Pat Swan, Patsy
Carlton, Kay Chadwick, Dale Reddick, Ida
Dorvee, Armenda Barnes, Shelby Holland and
Gloria Stevens (Past GFWC Alabama DJC) for
all your help and support.
To Gail Cantrell and the members of the
Carrollton Junior Woman‘s Club thank you for
everything you did to make the Junior Meeting
awesome. The room was amazing!
It was also great to have new Junior Conference
Members at the meeting and as part of the
program. Thank you to Carmen Fagler for her
Inspiration and to Denise Billingsly for giving
Grace.
I do wish I had a real snapshot of everyone
doing the locomotion throughout the banquet
room. Thank you Sandra Huey, Dale Reddick,
Jessica Hall and the other District Junior
Directors for a great membership exercise.
All the reports I received from Junior Clubs for
the work done in 2010 were wonderful and gave
me a snapshot of the difference Juniors have
made in their communities, the state, the nation
and the world. Thank you for everything you are
doing and keep up the great work.
Speaking of snapshots I would like a photograph
from every GFWC Georgia Junior Club for my
scrapbook. Please try to take a photograph of
your club this Fall and send it to my Scrapbook
I would like to thank all the clubs, districts and
club members who supported the ―Drives for
Drives‖ project. Please continue to support this
project with your donations to purchase USB
flash drives for all the students attending
Tallulah Falls School this Fall.
I hope everyone is supporting my Special
Project: Open the Doors to Literacy this summer
by reading to your children, your grandchildren,
your neighbor‘s children or children at your local
library or child care center. Don‘t forget to read
(or listen to an audio book) yourself. If you need
any suggestions for great books consult the
ESO Reading List on the GFWC website.
It is hard to believe how fast this year has gone
by. Institute will be here before we know it. So
please make plans to be in Athens on Saturday,
August 20 for Institute and on Sunday, August
21 for the Junior Conference Meeting. The
Junior Conference will be having another fun
and informative meeting.
Sandra Huey, First Vice President
GFWC Georgia Junior Conference
Calling all Juniors: Retaining
and Recruiting members is
the job of all the members of
each junior club. Have you
conducted your SWOT
analysis? Presidents, please
review the membership
portion of the 2010-12
yearbook. The SWOT
analysis is crucial to every organization. Don't
let the time slip away. This is a great summer
project for your board.
Also remember that in the Spring we were
"Growing Members" and in the Summer
GFWC's recruitment campaign is "Warm Up
with Members".
Again, check out the membership section in the
yearbook and let's get busy.
It was great to see all the Juniors who came to
State Convention at Callaway Gardens. A big
thank you to Gail Cantrell, Junior Convention
Chairman, for making Junior Day on Saturday
lovely and festive.
GOAL
SHEET
AWARD
This year, it was my
pleasure to present
The Esther Barnes
District Achievement
Award at the GFWC Georgia State
Convention to the Fourth District.
Congratulations to the clubs of the Fourth
District and to Linda Mote, District
President. This Award is the accumulation of
the achievements of the district and the
recognition belongs to the entire district.
Pictured above: GFWC Georgia 1st VP Shirene Daniell &
GFWC Georgia 4th District President Linda Mote
Using the GOAL Sheet is a good way for a
club to keep up with what is going on. A
certificate is presented to all clubs that mail in
their GOAL Sheet and complete all
requirements to make 100%.
I would like to encourage every club president
to work on completing the GOAL Sheet for
your club and sending it to the GFWC Georgia
State Office by February 1, 2012. A club that
does not make 100% is still encouraged to
mail the GOAL Sheet, since all scores are
averaged. A club that does not complete the
GOAL Sheet penalizes the District because a
―0‖ is given for the missing GOAL Sheet.
I am looking for GOAL Sheets from every club
in every district. Please contact the GFWC
Georgia State Office to get your copy of the
GOAL Sheet or print it from our gafwc.org
web page.
Georgia Women have been very busy this year!
I can not remember when so many different
clubs won awards at a state convention. This is
great and makes convention fun for everyone
and of course it means ―More clubs are doing
great work throughout Georgia!” Thank you
GFWC Georgia Clubwoman
The Newsletter of GFWC Georgia
Elaine Chandler, GFWC Georgia Second Vice-President
Clubs in the Third District were very
busy last year. Each club had so
many interesting and successful
projects. This was evident at the
district club meeting in March when
awards were presented to clubs for
their Community Service Program.
At State Convention in April, several
clubs in Third District won awards. I
am so proud of every club in Third District.
One area of strength during this past year was
in the area of membership. Increasing
membership is vital for any organization, and
our clubs have worked extremely hard to add
new members. One focus has been on
encouraging those who are enjoying retirement
to join our clubs. Three out of six clubs in the
Third District increased their membership.
Providing quality programs was also a strength
of our clubs.
such wonderful projects that make our homes
and communities a better place!
This has been a year of change in our plan of
work and Thank You Georgia for your work to
support these changes. I had a great time in
Milwaukee and learned more that I can share at
Institute in August.
Make plans now to attend the Reporting
Workshop and the Community Service
Workshops to learn about any changes at the
state and national level.
Oneta Kitchens, GFWC Georgia Third District President
Members learned about Fundraising,
Women‘s History and Resources,
Domestic Violence, and Leadership.
While doing great work on the club and
state level, Third District clubs were
busy assisting with our district project.
They made 71 blankets and provided
11 packages with items for babies in
the neo-natal unit for the Children‘s
Hospital at the Medical Center.
I have constantly been amazed by the way that
the ladies from the Third District exceed
expectations. When asked to participate in an
activity, they not only do the job, but they do an
amazing job and get it done on time. Third
District members were really shining at the State
Convention when we, under the leadership of
Kay Chadwick and Tish Stone co-hosted the
convention with the sixth district.
Everyone did a great job!
The 4 th District‘s symbol is the Hummingbird
because of its ability to accomplish
extraordinary feats even as small as it is. At
Convention in Callaway Gardens our small
district shone as one of Shirene‘s Super
Stars. The first star Decatur Woman‘s Club
with 12 members just celebrated 87 years of
lustrous work for their community and were
rewarded with certificates of recognition at
Convention Stone Mountain Woman‘s Club
was also rewarded for their successes in
Programs of Work. They are the shiniest star
of all since their member Shari Carter hosted
an outstanding Convention and is leading all
of us superstars on to a bigger, better and
brighter path.
The Dunwoody Woman‘s Club attracted 20
new stars to their orbit this year and they
shone brightly at the GFWC Georgia
Convention winning the Federation Cup.
It was so good meeting new friends at the State
Convention in April. Thank you to all the clubs
who submitted a TFS report for the 2010
reporting year. We hope there will be even
more clubs contributing for 2011. Some figures
from last year are: 57 clubs reporting
representing 1983 members (there are clubs
who do many things for the school and do not
report), $220,249.45-dollars donated, $6,210.in
kind donations, and 7,758 volunteer
hours. Give yourselves a pat on the
back. Great work. Friday night was TFS night at
Convention and a big thank you to everyone
who participated and to all the winners!
I attended the Graduation festivities
recently. We can all be very proud of our
eighteen Graduates. They received over 1.5
million dollars in scholarships (not including the
Hope Scholarship) and were accepted at fortytwo
colleges and universities. Shari Carter
presented each graduate with an engraved pen
points. We will get some extra credit, but we
need to save more labels. So, keep sending
them to the State Office. Also, we have many
Bell Tower pins and for a donation of $25.00
you will get one of these collectible pins. All
donations count toward your club's total
donation and there is an award for this
donation. The Bell is actually in its Tower at
the school and looks awesome. Don't forget
the Jr. Conference's Drive for Drive project.
GFWC Georgia Institute is August 19-21, 2011,
at UGA. Check the website for details and
plan to attend. Come for the entire time or just
for your special workshop.
Our new Middle School Campus will be ready
for the opening of school in August. It is quite
an addition to our campus. Continue to
support the school's many programs and plan
a visit. You will be amazed whether you visit
every year, or if you have never visited.
Have a great Summer.
There were a number of wonderful projects.
To inform their community, one club started blogs
related to arts and club work. One member
designed and installed two theater windows to
advertise upcoming events. This was an effort to
save live theater in there city. GFWC encourages
members to further their own artistic
expression. One club sponsored a photo
scavenger hunt. Members were given two
months to take pictures of items on their
list. Additional points were given to items that
included arts or club events. The winner of the
hunt received a $25 gift card from Hobby Lobby.
As Art Chairmen, we are looking forward to
sharing ideas and ways to improve reporting at
GFWC Georgia clubs carried out projects
involving the two Arts Partnership organizations.
The VSA and AMP were supported by monetary
and in-kind donations, information distribution to
clubs and community and promoting activities
both locally and nationally. One club carried out a
very unique AMP project, involving collecting
watches, creating a collage from them and
displaying it at the local library with information
about the achievements of the American Mural
Project.
Clubwomen throughout the state displayed their
talents in the photography, writing and member
crafts contests. It is time now to begin preparing
for next year's competitions. Remember to take
Top 10 Reasons to Recycle Plastic Bags
1. It’s Right Around the
Corner—According to the
Plastics Division of the
American Chemistry Council,
more than 1,800 U.S.
businesses handle or reclaim
post-consumer plastics.
2. It’s Worth a Thousand Words—Plastic bags
photodegrade, meaning they slowly break down
into smaller and smaller bits that can contaminate
soils and waterways.
3. We Need a Boost—According to the EPA, only
about 12 percent of bags and film were recycled
in 2007.
4. Everyone Wants It—There is a high demand for
this material, and in most areas, demand exceeds
the available supply because many consumers
are not aware that collection programs are
available at stores.
5. It’s Easier Than You Think—It takes 91 percent
less energy to recycle a pound of plastic than it
takes to recycle a pound of paper.
6. You Can Save a Trip—For every seven trucks
needed to deliver paper bags, only one truck is
needed for the same number of plastic bags.
7. Just Let It Burn—Plastics can help trash burn
more efficiently in energy-recovery facilities,
creating energy that can be used to make
electricity in some communities.
8. It’s Going Coast to Coast—Small plastic bags
make up about 9 percent of the debris found
Brenda Worley, GFWC Georgia Conservation Collaboration Chairman
The Partnership that I would like to feature in this
newsletter is Keep America Beautiful. Keep America
Beautiful has been engaging individuals to take
greater responsibility for their community
environments since 1953. You can contact them at
www.KAB.org and they will direct you to the Keep
America Beautiful affiliate in your community.
Partnering with them you can arrange litter cleanups,
litter prevention programs for club meetings, recycling
drives, graffiti removal and overall beautification of
your community. I spoke with Keep America Beautiful
and they suggested that clubs could focus on
recycling. I encourage you to go to their website for
links (an excellent resource is www.earth911.com)
and ideas...but here are some that the coordinator
and I discussed. A great idea for a club meeting that
you can do is teaching your members about recycling.
along various U.S. Coast in a five-year study.
9. Save Some Gas—When one ton of plastic bags
is reused or recycled, the energy equivalent of 11
barrels of oil is saved.
10. It’s So Trashy—According to the EPA, the
amount of plastics generated in municipal waste
stream has increased from less than 1 percent in
1960 to 12.1 in 2007
Here are examples of what you can recycle:
Clean plastic bags labeled #2
(HDPE) or #4 (LDPE)
Grocery bags
Retail bags (*remove hard plastic or
string handles before recycling*)
Plastic newspaper bags
Sealable food storage bags (with hard parts
removed)
Bags from boxes of cereal and crackers
(*remove crumbs inside*)
Dry cleaning bags (*remove hanger and any
paper advertising*)
Bread bags (*clean out the bread crumbs first*)
Plastic wraps from products such as paper
towels, bathroom paper, napkins, diapers, and
cases of soft drinks
Do not include used plastic food wrap, bags with food
residue, or material that has been painted or glued.
Doing so will contaminate the recycled material
making the entire load unusable. Unusable plastics
are usually thrown away and land filled.
Julie Walters, GFWC Georgia Conservation Partnership Chairman
You can play BINGO—by creating BINGO cards and
each square is about an item that can be recycled.
You can have a Recycled Shop at a meeting and
members shop (earning dollars that they accumulate
for all the recycling they do). Items in the shop are
donated by club members as they clean out their
closets. Create a fun way to share all the ways a
member can recycle….some examples they might
Three outstanding projects involving Tallulah Falls
School were: reported. One Club holds an International
Dinner at the School each year. Approximately 300
faculty, staff and students are invited, International
students were introduced and presented a flag of their
country and a US Flag which were purchased by the
Club. Students dressed in native costumes, told about
their countries, families, etc. TFS students are
―adopted‖ by Club Members from around the
state. Clubs provide greeting cards on all special
occasions, especially birthdays. They are given gift
cards and care packages throughout the
year. Ghosts‖ held every Halloween Season at the
Stone TFS Students and Staff were invited by one
One club reported reading to over 500 students
using a Dr. Seuss costume as a way of engaging
students in reading. Education service program
members researched the website for Mentoring
USA and discussed how they could participate.
Club members were recruited to volunteer as
mentors and served as mentors by meeting with
their assigned students once a week during the
school year, having fun with projects and activities.
Others reported providing school supplies and gifts
throughout the school year to students they
mentored. Education program members provided
supplies and helped with construction of table
decorations for the Y Mentors annual banquet
honoring local mentors
One club provided 18 students with a Reading
Rocket-Dinosaur Literacy Bag. The bags were
funded by a $150.00 GFWC and Proctor 7 Gable
Reading Rockets E-newsletter. Members published
Reading Rockets website in PTO newsletter for a
local school. Members handed out Reading
Rockets parent guides at a preschool parent
meeting. Clubs reported investigating Reading
Rockets on the internet. Reading Tips for Parents
from Reading Rockets were included in 40 packets
that were sent home with the students in a Head
Start classes. Media specialists in a local school
system were made aware of the Reading Rockets
program.
students where there is a need or to a deserving
student.
Members are faithful to attend Book Reviews and
then share and donate many books after they are
finished with them.
Project Hope is a foundation which provides
assistance and resources for families and children
with autism. Club Members spent time researching,
donating and working hands on with the children
and their parents. Provided much needed supplies
for their use.
One club partnered with Chick-fil-A to provide
backpacks for school children. A decorated box
was put in a CFA Restaurant and customers could
drop in money to buy a backpack or buy one
find people buried alive in the wreckage of disasters.
Trained teams from the National Search Dog
Foundation were deployed to Joplin Missouri to help
looked for survivors of the tornado.
Some ways to financially help the National
Search Dog Foundation area:
$50.00: ―Adoption Fee" to release a dog from a
County Shelter
$100.00: One week of trainer's time to evaluate a
canine for acceptance to SDF's program
$250.00: Basic obedience training to prepare
When the Public Issues Program of the Morrow
Civic Woman‘s Club met last January, they wanted
to do something for some soldier‘s children.
President Connie Johnson has a nephew, Brent,
who is a Blackhawk helicopter pilot at Hunter Army
Air Base in Savannah. The club collected 53 toys
at the September and October meeting and Brent‘s
mom took them to the company commander‘s wife.
She and Connie were invited to the family
Christmas party where the toys were to be given by
Santa Clause.
The party was in the C Company hanger and a
Blackhawk helicopter was decorated in Christmas
lights and had a Christmas tree inside, with the
gifts from MCWC under it. Families enjoyed a hot
dog dinner, a jumping castle, crafts and a visit by
Santa, who talked to each child. The big finale was
Santa in the helicopter and giving the gifts to the
children – each with their name on it.
Meet Mickie Smith,
GFWC Georgia Administrative Assistant
We asked Mickie Smith, GFWC Georgia Administrative
Assistant, to tell us a little about herself. Welcome Mickie!
I was born in San Diego, CA and raised in Luck, WI, Yo-Yo
capitol of the world through 7 th grade; we moved to River
Falls, Wisconsin [30 miles east of the Twin Cities], home of
University of Wisconsin–River Falls) where I graduated HS
(have some college credits). Began my secretarial/
administrative career in 1970 in Minnesota. Spent most of
my career working in the corporate world for officers/
mgmt. I have no siblings, but have always considered
friends as family. My mother was the first female auditor
for an insurance company in Minnesota and died of lung
cancer at age 58; my father is a retired biology professor
and lives in River Falls, Wisconsin.
George and I met in IL and married in 1977. We moved
from the Midwest; spent 13 years in Fort Myers/Cape
Coral, Florida; moved in 2005 to Clayton where we opened
our own business—Merle Norman Cosmetic Studio. We
closed it after 2 ½ years but the biggest blessing, besides
owning your own business (good bucket list item), was that
I got to meet 300 people who came in and out of my
door. I‘ve worked for Tanner Clothing (sales/mgmt) and
RC Chamber of Commerce (Membership Director) while in
Rabun County. George and I have lived in Tiger for 5
years. He works for Macon Bank in Highlands. We have
no human children, but 3 female pugs (Chyna, Cassie and
Camy) who rule the roost! I was secretary and Board
member of the CMBA; Co-founding member of the
Breakfast Club; member of the Newcomers Club; member
of the Celebrate Clayton Committee; member of the
Flower Festival Committee (church); secretary of the
Rabun Youth Board; and member of the Clayton Crawl
Committee. We belong to St. James Episcopal Church in
Clayton.
While living up north, I played in a golf league with all men
and took the winning tournament trophy with my
partner! While living in Florida, I was an avid golfer and
played on golf leagues. I like to read spiritual books and
mysteries; love animals; love old movies; love meeting
