focus on funds The Wheeling Automobile Club Fund Funds accumulated in community now benefit community Established in 1905, the Wheeling Automobile Club was formed as an affiliate of the American Automobile Association and provided services to its members in the Northern Panhandle. A true membership organization, the Club was overseen by a local Board of Directors and took its place among the valued and engaged local business community. The Club grew and flourished over the next 100 years and is now a part of AAA East Central with over 2.2 million members. Through careful fiscal stewardship, the Wheeling Automobile Club had accumulated substantial assets via its travel and insurance operations. The Board felt strongly that assets accumulated locally should be used locally for the betterment of our residents and communities. In 2003, the Board of the Wheeling Automobile Club took the first steps to ensure that those assets would remain in our community, benefiting local residents in perpetuity, by establishing a donor-advised fund at the Community Foundation for the Ohio Valley. Donor-advised funds are unique charitable giving vehicles that gained national prominence in the 1990s. While the assets become an irrevocable gift to the Foundation, donor-advised funds allow donor-advisors to remain involved in the grant making process into the future. sharing The Wheeling Automobile Club fund donor advisors are all local residents and former board members who are committed to our community and the quality of life of its residents. It is this group of individuals who recommend charitable grants from the Wheeling Automobile Club Fund at the Community Foundation. Recommendations are considered and approved by the Community Foundation Board of Trustees, who also authorize the actual distribution of funds. The Wheeling Automobile Club Fund was officially established at the Community Foundation on December 30, 2003, and became fully functional in the spring of 2006. The Fund was created with the transfer of nearly $1 million in assets and represents a tremendous gift to the community. Careful and prudent fiscal management will ensure that the fund is able to distribute thousands of dollars annually to benefit local non-profit and educational institutions. Ohio & Marshall counties are the primary grantmaking area of the Wheeling Automobile Club Fund.
focus on funds The Stealey Community Fund Enhancing life in Tyler County, West Virginia “It is my desire that special consideration be given to programs and projects which will improve the quality of life of the residents of Middlebourne such as improved library, recreational, municipal and youth services.” Ruth Stealey Green 1912-1996 With these simple words, Ruth Stealey Green communicated her commitment to the town of Middlebourne, not only at a single point in time, but in perpetuity. In 1993, Mrs. Green’s beloved brother, Philip B. Stealey, passed away, leaving her the bulk of his estate. She realized the uncertainty of human life and took steps immediately to draw up her own will, leaving her estate for the benefit of the community she loved. Her gift was valued at more than $5 million when the Stealey Community Fund became active at the Community Foundation for the Ohio Valley. Since the fund began making charitable grants in 1998, nearly $1.5 million has been used to improve the quality of life of the residents of Middlebourne. Despite this vigorous grantmaking activity, the fund has appreciated in value and is now worth around $7 million. Prudent investing and excellent stewardship of the funds will ensure that Mrs. Stealey’s desire to help improve her community lives on forever. Stealey Community Fund Grantee Illustrates Impact The Adams House is a community outreach center established by the Middlebourne United Methodist Church in July of 2003. The Stealey Community Fund provided the seed money for the organization’s start-up and continues to provide support on an annual basis. The Adams House provides ministries of Christian love that will touch those in need regardless of age, race, or religion in Tyler County, West Virginia. This ministry takes the form of support group meetings, bible study programs, victims assistance programs, and emergency assistance. The Adams House participates in the Mountaineer Food Bank and serves numerous families who might otherwise go hungry every year. Says a 12-year old girl who came to the Adams House with her mother, “If it wasn’t for you, we’d be out of food. Thanks.” Dot Wilcox, advisory board member, volunteered to serve. Her daughter, a minister in New Martinsville, actually brainstormed the idea that became the Adams House. “I wish that more people could be involved,” says Dot. “You really see the need if you’re here.” The Adams House enjoys broad-based community support, with many partner churches and grantmaking organizations providing needed support. They conduct an annual campaign, Changing Lives with your Change, which involves many communities and segments of the Tyler County population and provides much needed support for the Adams House. The grant that they receive from the Stealey Community Fund provides direct support for people in need. Sue Pelikan, Director of the Adams House, sums up their story by saying that they would like to nourish people spiritually as well as by putting food on their table. Many times, she says, just being there to talk to people in need is helpful. Says Sue, “We’re neighbors helping neighbors.” Mrs. Green would have liked that.
