FIELD OF INTEREST FUNDS
Donors can support causes they care about in
perpetuity by establishing field of interest funds. The
Foundation identifies grantees that best satisfy the
donor’s intent
MGC Fund $ 32,468
Benefits programs that address the physical,
educational, cultural and/or recreational needs of
pre-teen children
Williams Family Fund $ 37,612
Benefits programs that meet the basic needs of
children to assist in their growth and education

FISCAL SPONSORSHIP RELATIONSHIPS
Occasionally, a charitable purpose is undertaken by a
group of individuals who do not qualify for tax-exempt
status. If we are satisfied that the charitable purpose is
secure and will serve the greater good, the Community
Foundation may agree to accept donations on behalf
of the effort, thus allowing donors to benefit from
the tax deductible nature of the gift. The Foundation
works in concert with the group to ensure that funds
are expended for the stated charitable purpose. This
year, the Community Foundation established one such
relationship:
Wheeling Skate Park Fund $ 66,629
The provision of fiscal sponsorship is a community
service that the Community Foundation provides
when it has identified a worthwhile community effort
to address a recognized community need. The
Community Foundation is proud to be associated with
the Wheeling Skate Park project and looks forward to
its completion.
Northern Panhandle Long-Term Flood/Disaster
Recovery Fund $ 91,525
Created to handle a tremendous outpouring
of community support following the devastating floods
of late 2004/early 2005, this fund also accepted
a $200,000 grant from the Benedum Foundation
as well as the proceeds raised from the Brad Paisley
benefit concert “Mud in the Valley.”

The West Virginia Independence Hall
Foundation received a grant of $5,000
from the Community Foundation to assist in
developing a Civil War Battle Flag Exhibit at
West Virginia Independence Hall in Wheeling.
The project required approximately $500,000
for completion. A total of 13 State of West
Virginia Civil War battle flags will be preserved
and mounted for public display. Two galleries
will be designed to display the flags and
educate visitors.
The first West Virginia State Historian, Virgil A.
Lewis, said, “The most sacred relics that any
state can possess are its battle flags.”
Said Mrs. Bettie Steele, of the Flag Fund
Committee, “The grant from the Community
Foundation was the first external funding that
we received and, without it, we would never
have been able to move forward as quickly
and as successfully as we did in our fundraising
campaign. Thank you, Community Foundation!”
