2011 Annual Report - The Boys & Girls Club of Greater Memphis

1962 — 2012 2011 Annual Report

Friends of Youth:

In 2011 we proved we not only are providing a

positive place for kids, but we are preparing young

people for life-long success. Our objective to keep

students interested and challenged in school proved

to be successful. We graduated 214 high school

seniors, an all time high of 99.6%!

Even better, a staggering 68% of those graduates

went on to enroll in college, many became the first

generation in their family to attend. Still others chose

other doors to opportunity, 8 joined the armed forces

and many went on to learn a trade at our Technical

Training Center. We were extremely proud that almost

half of the inspiring Booker T Washington graduating

class were Boys & Girls Club members, including the

young man who introduced President Obama.

In the face of record highs in teen un-employment

our Technical Training Center accepted an all-time

record of 316 students. I’m proud to report that

we placed 100% of the program graduates in the

Memphis workforce. The culinary arts remain our top

training area. Students have expanded the program

to include their own line of gourmet products that

are now available at local restaurants and farmer’s

markets.

Setting our sights to the future we hired a number of

highly experienced Youth Development Professionals

to expand our services, create innovative new

programs, mentor children, and increase membership.

I am extremely confident in the team we have

in place to help our members become productive

citizens of our great city.

Camp Phoenix served 350 boys and girls who enjoyed

swimming, boating, camp crafts, mountain biking and

archery over 7 weeks this summer. It always amazes

me that most of these campers have never seen a lake,

sang around a campfire, caught a fish or taken a hike.

We continue to create life-long memories along with

new friends by hosting several weekend overnights

during the spring and fall for over 100 kids.

A sincere thank you to each of our investors who

supported our fundraisers and special events.

Our Steak n’ Burger, headlined by Coach Nick Saban,

welcomed over 800 guests. Our Golf Tournament

added an evening gala and corporate golf outing.

Tennis remains one of the largest amateur

tournaments in the MidSouth and the Toy Bash was

supported by a record 400 people.

2012 will be a year of growth, excitement, and

celebration. BGCM turns 50 and we plan to seize this

golden opportunity to keep the celebration going all

year long. With our new strategic plan we are ready,

willing and able to serve more kids…more often…

with more clubs.

In 1962 we opened the Barksdale club with 102

boys, 50 years later we operate 6 clubs, a training

center, and a summer camp while serving over 11,000

kids but we’re not through yet. Our youth need us

now more than ever. Our board, staff, volunteers,

community and investors must take on the challenge.

Join us as we Open Doors to Opportunity.

Happy Birthday Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater

Memphis, and many more.

Yours in Youth,

Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Memphis

Dear BGCM Supporters:

It has been a true honor to serve as the 2011 Chair

of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Memphis. I

want to thank our supporters, our board members,

our volunteers and our staff for their dedication,

support and leadership during this past year. 2011

was a difficult economic year for many but thanks

to your efforts we were able to continue providing

premier youth services to over 11,000 kids in the

Memphis Community.

BGCM has provided a positive place for kids for

50 years. We remain committed to opening doors

to education and career opportunities for young

people. As you can see by our results, we are truly

impacting lives. Just look at all we accomplished

together this year!

There are over 100,000 children in the Greater

Memphis area who need the services of the Boys

& Girls Clubs. Our goal is to serve 20,000 kids by

2020 but we need your help to get there. We are

committed to sustaining our current services. Our

ability to expand lies with the community we serve.

We rely on community partners, volunteers and

corporate partners to help us keep our Clubs

open and offering premier youth services to our

members. Those who supported our Clubs and

events last year made a vital investment in our

mission. Together we have done great things but

we plan to be greater still!

Our Boys & Girls Clubs kids continue to be shining

examples of the bright future of our community.

I believe each individual who commits to serve

and support this organization lays a brick in the

foundation of our city by creating a positive

environment for our children.

I am very proud of the work that the Boys & Girls

Clubs perform each day in the community. Thanks

again for all that you do for our kids!

In 1972, J. W. “Bill” Brakebill of Memphis proposed a

fundraiser where the adults ate hamburgers while dining

with Boys & Girls Club members eating steaks.

That first dinner helped balance the budget and kept the

Clubs operating. This original idea caught on in a big way

and now, over 40 years later, Steak n’ Burger Dinners are

held by Boys & Girls Clubs nationwide.
