Spirituals have provided a large base of music for the church 

ensemble. African-Americans, during times of trial and 

trouble, have found hope for a better life in their music. 

Songs like I Got Shoes and The Gospel Train transport 

singers and congregations into that heavenly realm where 

they can lay down their burdens and join in that heavenly 

choir. There is a joy in most spirituals that is unmatched. In
