Annual Report to the <strong>Wheeling</strong> <strong>Jesuit</strong> Community<br />

July 15, 2007<br />

I once saw this quote, and I keep it close: “Doubt sees the obstacles; faith<br />

sees the way. Doubt sees the darkest night; faith sees the day. Doubt dreads<br />

to take a step; faith soars on high. Doubt questions, “who believes?” Faith<br />

answers, “I.”<br />

As we have entered into our second half-century of service, we have paused<br />

to reflect upon how this institution has grown from a dream into one of national<br />

reputation. Curriculum and our physical environment have changed<br />

to encourage our growth, yet our core values have remained unchanged,<br />

service “with and among others” based upon ‘faith’.<br />

Over the last two years, increasing numbers of alumni and friends have<br />

made the <strong>University</strong> a priority in their personal philanthropy. They have<br />

answered “I.” We appreciate the faith they have expressed in <strong>Wheeling</strong><br />

<strong>Jesuit</strong>. As we look to the future, it is to those who believe in us that we turn<br />

to for support. There is no shortage of need in the World, and philanthropic<br />

opportunities abound. We want to continue to make our case to you that<br />

<strong>Wheeling</strong> <strong>Jesuit</strong>, our faculty, administration and especially our students, are<br />

good stewards of your gifts and worthy of your support. Incredible things<br />

happen here because of your commitment. If you “BELIEVE” in what we do,<br />

and appreciate our role in ‘who you are,’ we would invite you to join with<br />

BELIEVE Campaign Success Applauded<br />

Throughout the 2006-2007 fiscal year, our<br />

campus, alumni and friends around the<br />

world were asked to participate in the BE-<br />

LIEVE Campaign for the WJU Annual Fund,<br />

which directly supports the scholarship<br />

of our current students and the endowment.<br />

The <strong>University</strong> enjoyed gifts, which totaled<br />

$2.3 million – $1.4 million was unrestricted<br />

and $923,261 was restricted to<br />

endowment or maintenance of our physical<br />

plant.<br />

Alumni percentage of support surged<br />

from 19 percent in 2004, to 23 percent in<br />

2005 to 26 percent in 2006. The number of<br />

gifts received from our committed alumni<br />

and friends totaled $1.1 million.<br />

“The continued success of private, and selective, institutions of higher education is often the degree in which<br />

alumni and friends believe the institution’s mission and vision remains relevant. Their belief and conviction is<br />

shown by their gifts given in support of current operations and those plans which will mature in the future,”<br />

said Brent A. Bush, vice president for Institutional Advancement.<br />

“ The success of the 2006-2007 BELIEVE Campaign affirms that the alumni and<br />

friends of <strong>Wheeling</strong> <strong>Jesuit</strong> continue to believe in our institution, and the purposes<br />

for which it continues to exist, ” Bush added.<br />

“Therefore, in an effort to further unite all alumni and friends of the <strong>University</strong> for the 2007-2008 year, we ask<br />

you to continue to BELIEVE in Mission, Partnership and Hope, the core values of <strong>Wheeling</strong> <strong>Jesuit</strong>,” said Interim<br />

President Dr. James F. Birge.<br />

Alumni Support Continues to Increase<br />

Ninety percent of the <strong>University</strong>’s graduated classes<br />

increased their support during the “BELIEVE 2006-07”<br />

Campaign.<br />

“Forty-four of our 49 classes increased their percentage<br />

of class participation,” said Lori B. Dougherty, director<br />

of Annual Giving. “Private, selective higher education is<br />

expensive to pursue and to provide. The support by our<br />

alumni of our students today in their quest for a WJU<br />

education is important, so this statistic for 2006-07 is<br />

especially satisfying.”<br />

She added, “Everybody who has ever attended <strong>Wheeling</strong><br />

<strong>Jesuit</strong> has been a beneficiary of support given to<br />

the <strong>University</strong> by somebody who believes in what we<br />

do. More than 97 percent of our students receive some<br />

level of financial assistance, which represents an annual<br />

commitment of almost $11 million by the <strong>University</strong>.<br />

We appreciate the continuing support of our alumni,<br />

especially as they respond to our annual mailings and<br />

our Phonathon callers.”

First Jacober Scholarship Recipient Announced<br />

Dr. Gregory S. Merrick, leading international cancer treatment<br />

specialist and executive director of the Urologic<br />

Research Institute, and Dr. James F. Birge, interim president<br />

of the <strong>University</strong>, announced that Lydia DeLauder is<br />

the first recipient of a new scholarship.<br />

The Jeffrey M. Jacober Scholarship Fund recently was<br />

established for students studying in the field of physics.<br />

The Jacober Scholarship was created by the family of Jeffrey<br />

M. Jacober, and will provide annual support to a WJU<br />

physics student while offering<br />

practical experience<br />

at the Schiffler Cancer<br />

Center at <strong>Wheeling</strong><br />

Hospital.<br />

The Jacober Scholarship<br />

is the second scholarship<br />

created by the Urologic<br />

Research Institute for a<br />

WJU student. Last year,<br />

a scholarship funded by<br />

Elekta, an international<br />

medical-technology<br />

group, was awarded.<br />

“The special collaboration between the Urologic Research<br />

Institute and <strong>Wheeling</strong> <strong>Jesuit</strong> <strong>University</strong> is a unique model<br />

that demonstrates the rich learning that can happen<br />

when academic study and rigor is applied in practical experience.<br />

The vision of Dr. Merrick and his team improves<br />

our <strong>University</strong>, our community, and, in fact, the medical<br />

world as research and learning are brought together to<br />

combat the terrible disease that cancer is,” said Birge.<br />

<strong>Wheeling</strong> <strong>Jesuit</strong> students and physics professors play a<br />

key role at Urologic Research Institute. In a unique relationship,<br />

<strong>University</strong> students are given an opportunity<br />

to work along side of medical professionals, performing<br />

innovative research and participating in practical treatment<br />

of patients with cancer.<br />

The Schiffler Cancer Center, the Urologic Research Institute<br />

and <strong>Wheeling</strong> <strong>Jesuit</strong> <strong>University</strong> focus on innovative<br />

research methods directed toward the effective prevention,<br />

diagnosis, and treatment of prostate cancer and<br />

other urologic disorders.<br />

The <strong>University</strong> has established a concentration in medical<br />

physics and dosimetry for physics majors. This concentration<br />

includes two courses taught by the <strong>Wheeling</strong><br />

Hospital staff — one at <strong>Wheeling</strong> Hospital and one on<br />

campus.<br />

“This is a rather unique opportunity for our physics<br />

majors, who will have opportunities to do cutting-edge<br />

research and internships at the hospital, and they will<br />

learn from the country’s leading urologic radiation oncologists.<br />

Patients from 32 states and 11 foreign countries<br />

have sought Dr. Merrick’s expertise for treating prostate<br />

cancer,” said Dr. Peter Ehni, chair of WJU’s Department of<br />

Physics.<br />

Jeffrey M. Jacober was<br />

founder and CEO of the Ocean Group, Inc. The Ocean<br />

Group served as an incubator for Jeff’s other companies.<br />

In fact, Medport LLC, established in 1999, is still a<br />

producer of medical accessories today. Jacober was an<br />

entrepreneur who started and sold companies since he<br />

was in college. His earliest companies included JJ Cover-<br />

Ups and SGI, Inc., both marketers of sports and leisure<br />

products.<br />

A resident of Providence, Rhode Island, he and his wife<br />

Karen had three sons: David, Michael, and Eric. A graduate<br />

of the <strong>University</strong> of Rhode Island, he was committed<br />

to the Rhode Island community. Fundraising and philanthropy<br />

were most important to him.<br />

In 2004, Jacober was diagnosed with prostate cancer and<br />

embarked on an exhaustive search to find treatment for<br />

his condition, becoming a patient of Dr. Merrick at The<br />

Schiffler Cancer Center. His intent, following his own experience,<br />

was to establish Male Educational Centers. Unfortunately,<br />

these plans never came to fruition due to the<br />

tragic accident that claimed his life along with his wife<br />

Karen, and their youngest son Eric. The scholarship established<br />

in his name recognizes his intent and belief that<br />

research is a key factor, and education is paramount.<br />

Gratefully, you answered the call from<br />

the 2006-07 Cardinal Callers and they<br />

once again thank you for your support<br />

of <strong>Wheeling</strong> <strong>Jesuit</strong>. This year the Callers<br />

raised a record $130,000. The Callers<br />

welcomed 138 new donors this year and<br />

welcomed 1,573 gifts to the <strong>University</strong>.<br />

Troy Society, Early <strong>Jesuit</strong>s Recognized During<br />

Founder’s Day<br />

tribute to the members of its<br />

Troy Legacy Society – those<br />

individuals who make the<br />

<strong>University</strong> a priority in their<br />

estate planning, assuring<br />

the future financial independence<br />

of the <strong>University</strong>.<br />

call of donors who are members<br />

of the Troy Legacy Society and inducted several<br />

new members. Dr. Birge also gave an update on the <strong>University</strong><br />

and thanked all the Troy Society members for attending.<br />

Sr. Joanne Gonter, VHM ’59 spoke on the impact Rev.<br />

William Troy, S.J. had on those first classes and the <strong>University</strong><br />

as a whole. Troy, the first president of <strong>Wheeling</strong><br />

<strong>Jesuit</strong>, led the college from 1959-66. Andrew Fenton ’04,<br />

talked on why he supports <strong>Wheeling</strong> <strong>Jesuit</strong> and how to<br />

become a legacy society member.

Hacala Legacy of Service Endowed<br />

Rev. Joseph R. Hacala, S.J., the seventh president of the <strong>University</strong>, died on Feb.<br />

19, 2007 after a short bout with amyloidosis, a rare disease for which there is<br />

no cure.<br />

At its March 2007 meeting, the Board of Directors announced the establishment<br />

of the Hacala Family Scholarship Fund at <strong>Wheeling</strong> <strong>Jesuit</strong> <strong>University</strong>. The<br />

purpose of the fund will be to annually, and perpetually, distribute funds in<br />

support of <strong>Wheeling</strong> <strong>Jesuit</strong> <strong>University</strong> students who have demonstrated aptitude<br />

and leadership in the areas of social justice and empowerment, especially<br />

in the Appalachian Region. <strong>Special</strong> consideration will be given to those<br />

students who are inclined to education and service as a lifetime calling.<br />

Contributions to the fund have exceeded $120,000. The class of 1967 made<br />

The Hacala Family Scholarship Fund a part of its class gift in 2007, in honor of<br />

its 40th reunion.<br />

The Office of Alumni Relations has selected June 20-<br />

22, 2008 as the dates for next<br />

year’s Alumni Weekend. Anniversary<br />

celebrations will begin<br />

with the Class of 1963 and<br />

continue through 2003. While<br />

all alumni are welcome and<br />

encouraged to attend, special<br />

focus is given to the five-year<br />

reunion classes.<br />

everyone to become part of<br />

the celebration as milestones<br />

and memories are achieved<br />

and savored,” said Lori B.<br />

giving. “As planning is already<br />

under way for Alumni Weekend<br />

2008, our goal is to support<br />

the reunion classes of<br />

1963 (45th) and 1983 (25th).<br />

We hope they will encourage<br />

their classmates to increase the percentage of those<br />

who support the <strong>University</strong> as a special commemoration<br />

and celebration of their common heritage at<br />

<strong>Wheeling</strong> <strong>Jesuit</strong> during their anniversary year.”

Strategic Planning Advances<br />

After months of focus-group meetings, surveys and<br />

information gathering, the <strong>University</strong>’s Board of Directors<br />

adopted a draft 2007-2010 Strategic Plan on<br />

March 9 at its annual retreat and quarterly meeting.<br />

The Strategic Planning Process’ focus groups, integrated<br />

task forces and advisory groups had met over<br />

an 18-month period and the Strategic Plan contains<br />

many of the ideas and suggestions that emerged<br />

from the planning process.<br />

“The <strong>University</strong> is grateful for the hundreds of people<br />

from all its constituencies who shared their time, insights<br />

and energy to the process. Such engagement<br />

ensures the process’ quality, meaning and support<br />

as a harbinger of the <strong>University</strong>’s bright future,”<br />

said Interim President James F. Birge after the Board’s<br />

action.<br />

Begun in 2004, the process began with a listening<br />

phase, initiated by a mandate from then-President<br />

Rev. Joseph R. Hacala, S.J. and Board Chair Col. Carol<br />

A. Yarnall ‘63, USAF (Ret.) for an institutional vision<br />

and plan that would position the <strong>University</strong> among<br />

emerging elite young universities. Dr. Birge and Dr.<br />

Frederick Lambert were tapped to develop the continuing<br />

phases of the project. Several areas of opportunity<br />

emerged from early meetings – <strong>University</strong><br />

educational processes; <strong>University</strong> growth; <strong>University</strong><br />

outreach; <strong>University</strong> finances and operations; <strong>University</strong><br />

governance, assessment and accountability.<br />

Final goals and objectives of the 2007 Strategic Plan<br />

became:<br />

• Enhancing the Common Educational Experience<br />

• Growing Enrollment and Regional Presence<br />

• Funding Our Future<br />

• Increasing Campus-wide Collaboration<br />

• Establishing a Marketing Orientation<br />

According to Dr. Birge, “Achievement of the ambitious,<br />

yet realistic, goals of the Strategic Plan will enable us<br />

to fulfill the charge of the Board of Directors to develop<br />

a plan which would better position and prepare<br />

the <strong>University</strong> for future increased enrollment, which<br />

will be driven by high quality educational experiences.<br />

It will be the special challenge for me, and our new<br />

President, Julio Giulietti, S.J., to administer the <strong>University</strong><br />

with the objective guidance offered by this living<br />

and evolving blueprint for the future. Our success will<br />

require the collaboration, support and investment of<br />

all of our constituencies -- internal and external.”<br />

Honor Roll 2007<br />

Former Board Member Anthony C. Woomer Dies<br />

Former <strong>Wheeling</strong> <strong>Jesuit</strong> Board of Director Anthony C.<br />

Woomer, died April 15, 2007 in Louisville, Ken. Woomer<br />

also was the benefactor of the Anthony C. and Catherine<br />

Woomer Charitable Remainder Trust and member<br />

of the WJU President’s Circle.<br />

Woomer served on the <strong>Wheeling</strong> <strong>Jesuit</strong> board from<br />

1980 to 1988. In addition, Woomer endowed a medal<br />

to be given each year at commencement. The Woomer<br />

Medal is given annually to a graduating female student<br />

who best exemplifies academic achievement and service<br />

to the <strong>University</strong>. The Woomer Medal is given in<br />

honor of his mother, Mary.<br />

The son of the late Jerome and Mary Woomer, he was<br />

born in Boyce Station, Pa. Raised in <strong>Wheeling</strong>, he graduated<br />

from Central Catholic High School in 1950 and<br />

Villanova <strong>University</strong> in 1954. He married Catherine Mc-<br />

Cormick and after college, he served in the Army for<br />

two years. His career in the coal industry began as a<br />

sales representative with Consolidation Coal in 1956.<br />

In 1973, Woomer became executive vice president and<br />

chief operating officer for Industrial Fuels Corporation<br />

in Detroit.<br />

He and his family moved to Lexington in 1977, where<br />

he served as president and CEO of General Energy Corporation<br />

until 1987. Woomer was elected into the coal<br />

industry’s “Old Timer’s Club” in 1981. Throughout the<br />

1980s and 90s, Woomer’s interests were with N&W Coal<br />

Sales and DLM Coal Corporation.<br />

He was preceded in death by his sister, Nancy Gompers;<br />

and brother, Timothy Woomer.<br />

Surviving are his wife of 54 years, Catherine; his eight<br />

children, Judith Woomer Keating, Matthew Woomer<br />

and Joseph Woomer of Lexington, John Woomer of<br />

Grand Rapids, Mich., Katie Guido and Andrew Woomer<br />

of Cleveland, Ohio, Nancy Sidow of Piedmont, Calif., and<br />

Susan Schneid of Pittsburgh; 23 grandchildren; and siblings,<br />

Joan Hamm, Michael Woomer, Molly O’Malley, and<br />

Patrick Woomer.<br />

The Mary Woomer Medal, reflecting both academic distinction and service to the <strong>University</strong>, represents the crowning<br />

achievement for a female student at <strong>Wheeling</strong> <strong>Jesuit</strong> <strong>University</strong>. A minimum 3.0 grade point average is required<br />

for eligibility. A vote of full-time faculty and administrators of the <strong>University</strong> select the recipient each spring.<br />

“The class valedictorian is selected on the basis of scholarship alone, and the Katherine Fouts Medal honors service<br />

without regard to academic performance. The Woomer Medal, in celebrating both areas of achievement, represents<br />

the highest award given to a female student by the officers and faculty of <strong>Wheeling</strong> <strong>Jesuit</strong> <strong>University</strong>,” said<br />

Academic Dean Dr. Letha Zook.<br />

There are many reasons people make charitable gifts to<br />

For example, a person who has a hefty tax liability may<br />

make a year-end gift to ease the tax burden. Another<br />
