A Message from Fr. Jim . . .<br />
On <strong>the</strong> Feast of <strong>the</strong> Baptism of <strong>the</strong> Lord<br />
The scripture read<strong>in</strong>gs for <strong>the</strong> Feast of <strong>the</strong> Baptism of <strong>the</strong> Lord present Jesus <strong>to</strong> us as <strong>the</strong> “servant of God”<br />
fore<strong>to</strong>ld <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Book of Isaiah. He is <strong>the</strong> chosen one <strong>in</strong> whom God is well pleased. As God’s servant, Jesus<br />
will fulfill His mission with <strong>to</strong>tal commitment <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fa<strong>the</strong>r’s will <strong>in</strong> a show of humility before all people.<br />
It is at <strong>the</strong> Jordan River that Jesus is established “as a light for <strong>the</strong> nations,” <strong>to</strong> give sight <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> bl<strong>in</strong>d and<br />
freedom <strong>to</strong> prisoners. Jesus is revealed <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> waters of Baptism. In <strong>the</strong> Gospel account from St. Luke that<br />
we hear this weekend, as Jesus is baptized by John <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Jordan River, <strong>the</strong> heavens are opened, <strong>the</strong> Spirit<br />
of God comes down on Christ as a dove and a voice - <strong>the</strong> Fa<strong>the</strong>r’s - says: “You are my beloved Son; with<br />
you I am well pleased”.<br />
With this, what was fore<strong>to</strong>ld by <strong>the</strong> Prophet Isaiah is fulfilled. God’s favor rests on His servant, <strong>the</strong><br />
Fa<strong>the</strong>r’s favor for His eternal Son. Jesus has taken on human nature. In deep humility, He has asked John<br />
<strong>to</strong> baptize Him with water. Yet John <strong>the</strong> Baptist is only <strong>the</strong> one prepar<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> way for <strong>the</strong> Christ, <strong>the</strong><br />
Messiah, and his Baptism of water is only a preparation for <strong>the</strong> Messiah’s com<strong>in</strong>g - a preparation for grace.<br />
Jesus, <strong>the</strong> humble servant of God, br<strong>in</strong>gs grace and baptizes with <strong>the</strong> Holy Spirit and fire. This same gift<br />
has been given <strong>to</strong> each of us through <strong>the</strong> life giv<strong>in</strong>g waters of Baptism. As we recall <strong>the</strong> great encounter <strong>in</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> Jordan River between Jesus and John we should rejoice <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> gifts of grace given <strong>to</strong> each of us and <strong>the</strong><br />
transform<strong>in</strong>g power of our own Baptism.<br />
God bless you always!<br />
