Leadership Circle

Project Bread’s Leadership Circle is comprised of a special group of

individual donors who make an extra commitment to those facing hunger in

Massachusetts. Their generosity has helped make it possible to provide life-

saving support to emergency food programs throughout the state. They also

made it possible for Project Bread to develop and demonstrate innovative

solutions to end hunger. This list acknowledges gifts made between June 1,

2009, and May 31, 2010.

“I am proud to be part of such a terrific organization and help support

a tremendously worthy cause. I will continue to pledge my support by

helping in any way I can and look forward to building a long-lasting

partnership with Project Bread.”

— Jacoby Ellsbury, center fielder for the

Boston Red Sox, showing off the label of

ZinfandEllsbury wine to Ellen Parker of

Project Bread and Kelsey Hawkins at the

House of Blues. A portion of the proceeds

from the wine benefited Project Bread.

“I have been doing The Walk for Hunger for the past

eight years and have many fond memories but the one

that stands out is from the 2008 Walk. I saw three

elderly gentlemen walking in front of me, supporting

each other as they walked and chatted. As I got closer

and passed them, I noticed that the one in the middle was

using a cane, while the other two both had hearing aids.

They each had been doing The Walk for Hunger for over

20 years and it made me think that maybe one day, I

would have someone help me complete my 20th Walk

even if I were physically challenged.”

— Sharon E. Lowe from Wellesely Hills, who raised

$10,620 for the 2010 Walk, shown here with Project Bread

Executive Director Ellen Parker. Ms. Lowe has raised a total

of $22,370 for hungry families.

“We see the work of Project Bread as systematic and effective

in providing basic support services to help individuals and

families, moving them along the path toward economic self

sufficiency. Project Bread demonstrates how to harness the

power of collaboration — that’s what has really inspired us —

to effectively address gaps in the system to fight hunger.

Healthy families lead to healthy communities and that’s why

State Street Corporation has supported Project Bread for more

than ten years through grant dollars, event support, and fantastic

volunteer service.”

“The Project Bread’s annual Walk for Hunger is

likely one of the most honorable causes one can

affiliate with in the state of Massachusetts. There are

many important causes out there, but this initiative

addresses all those in need in our community,

regardless of their differences, and unifies many

individual efforts, private and public, making them

all work together for one great common goal — to

lend a hand to those in basic need. The contribution

made on behalf of rebecca’s café over the last few

years has always been one of a group effort as well;

our vendors, who have taken part in our effort to help,

have also been very willing to benefit this cause.”

Heart & Sole Walkers are a group of dedicated

participants who raise a minimum of $500 for

each Walk. In 2010, Heart & Sole Walkers

raised $1.5 million to relieve and eliminate

hunger in Massachusetts.

as possible in listing our supporters. We

Heart & Sole Walkers

We gratefully acknowledge over 1,500 Heart & Sole Walkers

who rallied the support of their friends, neighbors, and

coworkers to raise $1.5 million to feed the hungry. Heart &

Sole Walkers who raised more than $1,000 are also part of

our Leadership Circle.

“I started fundraising for The Walk for Hunger in 1988 when

a coworker from Bain & Company asked me to join the team.

They told me a little about Project Bread and The Walk for

Hunger and I got all choked up and teary-eyed. My children

were six and eight at the time and I could never imagine my

children being hungry, so I joined the team. My hope is that

one day, hunger — as we know it — as we see it — and as we

feel it — will be a thing of the past. But until that day, as long

as there’s a need and I am able, I’m on board. ”

— Monica Matthews, who has raised a total of $41,521 and has

been a Heart & Sole Walker for the past 12 years

“The Walk for Hunger is something that I

have been doing for a number of years and

I always feel good about walking. I walk for

a number of reasons. First and foremost, I

don’t believe that anyone should go hungry.

I can’t imagine going to bed hungry

and not knowing when or from where my

next meal was coming. Project Bread is a

wonderful organization that does so much

good in the community and I support it

wholeheartedly. I will continue to walk as

long as I can.”

“I am addicted. It is part of my soul and my

being now. I grew up the son of immigrant

parents, and I remember the hard times. It is my

turn to give back. I always volunteer and give to

charity. I tell my sponsors that they have the easy

part. It’s a lie — I have the easy part. The miles

melt away. I love the camaraderie, the atmosphere,

the experience, the joy of helping.”

past 20 years, with his wife, Juliana Perrissinotto,

“When I embarked on my first Walk as a

senior in high school, the impact I would be

making and the significance of what I was

doing had not fully struck me. Now that I

have completed my ninth Walk, I have had

ample opportunities to take a step back and

see not only the big picture, but also the

effect that food insecurity, hunger, and insufficient

nutrition have on a daily basis. My

involvement with Project Bread has shaped

who I am today and has molded me into

someone much more cognizant of the devastating

effects of hunger. I am grateful for

organizations like this one because it is my

firm belief that every human being is entitled

to, not just three square meals a day, but

well-rounded, healthy meals that nourish

the body and allow the brain to function at

its highest capacity. I look forward to my

tenth walk in 2011 and I encourage everyone

to increase their participation until

hunger has been eradicated.”

“I walk for all those that would or could

walk if given the chance. I truly believe

that in this great country of ours no child

should go hungry. They are our future

and they deserve the right food to eat.

Time is the most precious gift one can

give. I give my time and feel the joy of all

Chef Kirk Conrad, Ellen Parker, Jean McMurray, Robert Travaglini, Marla M. Capozzi, Dr. Lauren M. Smith, Anne Allred, and William F. Kennedy

We gratefully acknowledge the unflagging support and inspired

vision of our Board of Directors.

“There are so many people behind the scenes that work feverishly

and diligently to accomplish this mission, and the effort results in

a synergy that is created at the gates of the Boston Common that

is very uncommon. Usually you don’t see people gather in these

numbers unless there has been a major event that has caused

significant harm. This is different. Very rarely do you witness a time

where people discard their ethnicity, their geography, their

education, and the faith they practice to become one. I’ve seen it.

It’s powerful. It’s also very rare and it does not happen by accident.

You’ve got to have the right mission, driven by the right people . . .

and it all has to come together.”

— The Honorable Robert E. Travaglini,

speaking at the 2010 Walk Kickoff Breakfast

“Hunger affects everyone, but some people — like

children and seniors — are especially vulnerable. And

while most people don’t realize it, childhood obesity is

directly related to hunger. Kids are developing type II

diabetes because they don’t have access to healthy food.

In promoting Project Bread’s Walk for Hunger, Blue

Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts acknowledges that

hunger and food insecurity are public health issues, and

we are committed to making a difference. Our employees

raise money and take part in The Walk for Hunger every

spring knowing that their efforts directly help the people

who face health emergencies because they don’t have

food on the table. It’s the right thing to do, and it’s the

right place for us to be.”

— Timothy O’Brien, senior vice president, Sales Division,

Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts

Marla Capozzi and her daughter, Milena Harned, at Project Bread’s 2010 Kickoff Breakfast

“The mission of Project Bread is extremely important to

me, and the organization’s impact to date is astonishing.

But what I really get excited about are the people in the

organization, those affiliated with it and especially our

Walkers. They are committed to today’s goals with the

vision of a hunger-free state and have aspirations to more

broadly influence public policy throughout the country

with our work.”

Board member Alberto Vasallo III with his daughter,

Alexandra, at the 2010 Walk for Hunger

Project Bread is the first organized

group in the state to recognize the

need to feed hungry people. Today, it’s

an organization still ahead of the curve

because it not only advocates feeding

hungry people through the programs it

supports, but it demonstrates leadership

in advocating that we feed all people

in a healthy and nutritious fashion.”

— Thomas O’Neill III, shown giving

Ellen Parker the Speaker Thomas P. O’Neill

Award for Exemplary Public Service for

her long-standing commitment to ending

hunger, sponsored by the Greater Boston

Federal Executive Board in 2009

2010 Board of Directors

“We are a social justice organization — we’re a social justice movement. And to me

there’s nothing more fulfilling than working every single day to make sure people have

enough of the right food to eat. This work doesn’t lose the vision of the world that we

can build together. I think that we have the power to change the country. I think we

have the power to change the world.”
