We are pleased to invite you to the official
opening of the Ewald Platte art exhibition.
Ewald Platte (1894-1985) was one of the
greats of the German art scene of the 1920s.
He exhibited alongside the likes of Picasso,
Jawlensky, Klee, Feininger and Matisse. He
forged close ties with Jawlensky, with whom
he exchanged several paintings, a gesture of
their mutual respect for each other’s work.
During this time, Platte also befriended the
prominent art connoisseur, Ms Galka
(Emmy) Scheyer who organized the
legendary ‘European Modernists’ exhibition
in Los Angeles and Oakland in 1927-28.
The vagaries of history robbed Platte of the
enduring recognition he deserves. Platte’s
burgeoning fame ended abruptly when the
Nazis rose to power. His paintings were
labeled “degenerate art” (entartete Kunst),
removed from museums in Germany and
destroyed. In 1943, an Allied bomb directly
hit his house, wiping out his lifetime’s work
till then. Soon after, Platte also suffered the
death of his only son in the war.
Platte overcame adversity and continued to
paint and innovate tirelessly, developing
astounding new techniques all his life.
A wide range of Platte’s works, from his
estate, will be on display in the museum.
Mrs Netuschil, owner of Gallery Nicole
Netuschil, was a student and a long-time
friend of the artist. Platte's works have been
in her custody and care for many years,
making this exhibition possible. Mrs
Netuschil has contributed extensively to the
catalogue for this exhibition with her knowledge
of the artist and his works.
