usiness travel news ��THE � THE LATEST TRAVEL TIPS FROM AROUND THE WORLD Heathrow Airport’s new $NZ8billion Terminal 2 moves step closer Emirates Opens Gateway EMIRATES HAS LAUNCHED the fi rst direct air bridge between the Middle East and America’s Northwest, as its inaugural service from Dubai departed for Seattle-Tacoma International Airport. With two dynamic and fast-growing regions now more closely linked, Emirates’ Seattle service will generate a host of economic benefi ts; from boosting imports and exports to creating new markets for business and tourism. Emirates operates the latest Boeing 777-300ERs on three of its four daily services from New Zealand to Dubai and beyond via Australia (the fourth service is operated by the A380 superjumbo). Flight EK 229 leaves Dubai daily at 9.50am and arrives at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport at 1.10pm (local time). Flight EK 230 departs Seattle at 5.10pm, arriving in Dubai at 7.40pm the following day (local time). 2 nzcorporatetraveller ISSUE 21 THE TH NEW TERMINAL, which will be capable of handling 20 million mil m passengers a year, is part of a $NZ12 billion construction project pr pro that has just had its ‘topping off’ ceremony completed. To T minimise disruption to passengers, construction of Terminal Ter 2 is taking place in two phases. The fi rst phase, to open ope in 2014, sees the creation of the main terminal on the site sit site of the old Terminal 2 and Queen’s Building. It also involves the construction of a satellite terminal with additional aircraft parking stands and passenger gates called Terminal 2B. The second phase will extend the main Terminal 2 building northwards onto the existing Terminal 1 site. This phase, which will also include the construction of a second satellite building (T2C), will increase the capacity of Terminal 2 from 20 million passengers to 30 million passengers annually. Opened in 1955, the old Terminal 2 shut in 2009 and was demolished in 2010. It was Heathrow’s fi rst terminal, originally called the Europe Building. Originally designed to deal with 1.2 million passengers a year, it was dealing with 8 million annually when it closed. Visit heathrowairport.com WELLINGTON’S INTERNATIONAL DEPARTURE FEE GONE WELLINGTON AIRPORT has confi rmed the removal of the International Departure Fee for passengers from 1 April 2012. The International Departure Fee, known to many as the Departure Tax, has been in place at Wellington Airport for over 20 years. The new prices ensure that travel to and from Wellington is competitive, with international charges set to reduce by 39% over the 5- year period. The reduction in international charges, combined with incentives for growth, is expected to help promote new routes and additional services to the capital. The airport has also confi rmed its plan to invest $65million in aeronautical assets over the 5-year period. Following the opening of the Airport’s dual use terminal, The Rock – ranked 4th best in the world – the next signifi cant capital development will be the Southern Terminal expansion. This will provide increased gate lounge space and new toilets. The expansion of the Southern Apron will increase aircraft capacity to accommodate growth.
