BALI AIRPORT FOR $<strong>21</strong>1 MILLION UPGRADE<br />

EXPANSION OF BALI’S Ngurah Rai International<br />

Airport will start this month, beginning with a project<br />

to relieve traffi c congestion.<br />

The project will be divided into four phases. The<br />

fi rst phase includes building access roads for the<br />

surrounding environment and the second phase is<br />

building a parking area.<br />

The third phase is building the terminal, which will<br />

start in March or April this year. The fourth phase<br />

is creating an automatic baggage handling system.<br />

The airport company is building a new international<br />

terminal and will convert the airport’s current<br />

international terminal to a domestic terminal.<br />

INTERCONTINENTAL HOTELS GROUP<br />

is stepping into the health and wellness<br />

trend with the introduction of its eighth<br />

brand, Even Hotels.<br />

The new brand, which is scheduled to<br />

see its fi rst opening during the fi rst part of<br />

2013, is focused on the healthy-minded<br />

traveller and will focus around four key<br />

areas: Exercise, Eat, Work and Rest.<br />

The hotels will come equipped with<br />

amenities such as guestrooms designed<br />

for in-room workouts (complete with<br />

coat racks that double as pull up bars),<br />

nutritious menus, hypoallergenic linens<br />

and anti bacterial wipes. Restaurants and<br />

cafes will focus on fresh, fi t and energising<br />

meals, and free fl avoured water and mini<br />

The project will also include construction of a<br />

3-story parking lot capable of accommodating<br />

1500 cars.The terminal will also be equipped with<br />

a transit hotel to accommodate the passengers of<br />

cancelled fl ights. The airport’s domestic terminal is<br />

currently operating over capacity, accommodating<br />

4.5 million passengers a year — three times its<br />

maximum load.<br />

The airport’s terminals will span 190,000m 2 and be<br />

able to accommodate 20 million passengers a year<br />

after the expansion project is complete in 2013.<br />

Once the fourth phase is completed, the airport will<br />

be the fi rst in Indonesia to have a barcode-driven<br />

automatic baggage handling system.<br />

VIRGIN LAUNCHES NEW<br />

UPPER CLASS MEAL SERVICE<br />

VIRGIN ATLANTIC has introducing a new Upper<br />

Class meal service.<br />

Following on from a new crockery and cutlery<br />

service that was introduced into the Upper Class<br />

cabin last year, the pre-fl ight glass of Lanson Black<br />

Label Champagne or Bucks Fizz will now be served<br />

in a new champagne coupe glass, made famous in<br />

the golden age of Hollywood.<br />

A new Graze menu has been introduced on<br />

selected fl ights, enabling passengers who don’t<br />

fancy a full meal to opt for hot and cold snacks that<br />

can be ordered at their seat whenever they like.<br />

A modern table setting, using linen designed by<br />

Virgin Atlantic’s inhouse design team, has also<br />

been introduced.<br />

Passengers travelling on selected day fl ights, like<br />

London Heathrow to US West Coast services, will<br />

be able to sample a new post-dessert cheese trolley<br />

including biscuits, fruit and chutney served with a<br />

glass of port.<br />

AIRBERLIN will become a<br />

full member of oneworld,<br />

adding Europe’s sixth largest<br />

carrier to the premier global airline alliance.<br />

Austrian airline NIKI, also a member of<br />

the airberlin group, will join oneworld at the<br />

same time as an affi liate member.<br />

So from 20 March 2012, it will be offering<br />

oneworld’s full range of services and substantially<br />

expand the alliance’s network in<br />

Germany, Europe’s biggest economy, and<br />

throughout South and Central Europe.<br />

It will add almost 70 destinations to the<br />

alliance’s map, extending oneworld’s global<br />

coverage to some 840 destinations in 150<br />

countries, served by more than 9000<br />

departures a day operated by a combined<br />

fl eet of some 2500 aircraft, carrying nearly<br />

300 million passengers a year, with annual<br />

revenues of almost $US100 billion.<br />

It will become part of oneworld 3 months<br />

before it moves into the new Brandenburg<br />

airport at its Berlin home, which will open<br />

on 3 June with an eventual capacity for<br />

27 million passengers a year. airberlin and<br />

its alliance partners will be co-located at<br />

Europe’s newest hub, sharing lounges and<br />

many other facilities, to offer customers<br />

there the smoothest of connections.<br />

Another truly British tradition, the afternoon tea<br />

trolley, will also be introduced on certain fl ights,<br />

whereby each passenger will receive their own mini<br />

cake stands including fi nger sandwiches, selection<br />

of cake, and scones with jam and clotted cream.
