project, due to be completed in 2009, that will
make the Ames complex one of the largest animal health
centers in the world. Because the facility has not yet
begun receiving animals, CAST participants were able
to visit areas not accessible to visitors once the building
is in full operation.
Spring 2007
The Spring 2007 Board of Directors’ Meeting, held
March 20–23 in Washington, D.C., began with a welcome
reception for CAST Board Members, Stakeholder
Representatives, and invited guests. A New Board
Member Orientation Dinner followed, at which CAST
President Ed Runge and other officers and Staff members
presented information to help those new to the
Board become familiar with their role as directors.
Four guest speakers addressed the Board during the
meeting: Charles Stenholm, Congressman from Texas
from 1979 to 2005; Mr. Greg Crosby, National Program
Leader, CSREES; Dr. Gale Buchanan, Under Secretary
of Agriculture for Research, Education, and Economics
and former CAST President; and David Schmidt, CEO
and President of the International Food Information
Council.
At an evening dinner attended by Board Members
and invited guests, the Charles A. Black Award was
presented to Dr. David H. Baker, an outstanding scientist
from the University of Illinois. In his remarks, Dr.
Baker outlined seven qualities necessary to be a player
in the academic world: integrity, persistence, efficiency,
relationships, teaching and learning, altruism, and the
ability to communicate research.
Work Group and Committee break-out sessions were
productive, resulting in a number of publication project
proposals moving forward to the National Concerns
Committee or the Executive Committee for further consideration.
Fall 2007
The Board of Directors held its Fall 2007 meeting
in Ames, Iowa, October 23–26. Kassim Al-Khatib was
named President, Edward C. A. Runge became Past
President, and Henry B. Shands began service as President-Elect.
A vote to change the name of the Plant and
Soil Sciences Work Group to the Plant, Soil, and Environmental
Sciences Work Group was passed. Several
publication projects were moved forward during breakout
discussion sessions. The Board approved one new
Issue Paper, and the Executive Committee approved
one new CAST Commentary. For additional meeting
Kassim Al-Khatib
President
www.cast-science.org
Letter from the CAST President
It is a great honor to serve as CAST President. Last year was an exciting and productive year for CAST,
thanks to the efforts of our exceptional Board of Directors, Staff, publication Task Forces, and volunteers. We
are proud that CAST’s work has been well recognized and widely received; the credibility of our organization
today is admirable and the quality of our publications is exceptional.
In October 2007, we celebrated CAST 35 th anniversary in Ames, Iowa, the birthplace of CAST. Both Senator
Tom Harkin and Nobel Prize Laureate Norman Borlaug addressed the Board of Directors and congratulated
CAST for serving agriculture through the years. They emphasized the importance of CAST and encouraged us
to continue providing much-needed reliable scientific information to policymakers, regulators, the media, the
private sector, and the public. These sectors value and are benefited by CAST’s role in addressing policy options.
We are proud that CAST has established itself as an organization critical to the health, safety, and security of our
society.
During the past 35 years, CAST has been very successful in fulfilling its mission to assemble, interpret, and
communicate credible science-based information regionally, nationally, and internationally. Since its founding in
1972, CAST has released more than 300 scientific Reports, Special Publications, Issue Papers, and Commentaries,
written and reviewed by top scientists from the United States and around the world. These publications have
been timely, relevant, and consistent, addressing critical agricultural issues.
During 2007, we produced a record number of publications, including three Commentaries, three Issue
Papers, and one Special Publication (see “Publications and Rollout Events,” p. 3). CAST broadened its global
involvement by completing a large project supported by the U.S. Agency for International Development on avian
influenza vaccination, which served an international audience and has brought more credibility and recognition
to CAST. We hope to continue working on similar projects in the future.
This was an important year for membership. CAST welcomed the Society for Nutrition Education onto the
Board, bringing the total number of societies to 38. CAST Staff and the Membership and Marketing Committee
worked hard to broaden CAST’s individual and sustaining membership. We all need to work hard to introduce
societies and individuals to the activities of CAST. A successful and vibrant organization must have a strong
individual and sustaining membership base. We need to continue providing value and must ensure current and
prospective members are aware of the importance of their CAST membership.
We have a strong and relevant organization, and I am excited about the future of CAST. As we look forward
to the year ahead, we need to focus on how we can work together to improve CAST and serve agriculture far
into the future. I hope CAST will continue communicating with policymakers and others on timely issues
in 2008. Our challenge is to maintain and improve what we have been doing so well.
Kassim Al-Khatib, President of CAST
Mission
CAST assembles, interprets, and communicates
credible, science-based information regionally,
nationally, and internationally to legislators,
regulators, policymakers, the media, the private
sector, and the public.
Vision
CAST will be recognized as a credible and
objective source of science-based information
on agricultural issues across the urban–rural
continuum—especially those issues regarding
food, fiber, landscape environments, and
agriculturally related natural resource, societal,
and environmental concerns.
