Horizon Academy specializes in helping children with learning disabilities in grades one through 12. Since<br />
1999, our unique educational institution has been designed to provide an environment where children can<br />
experience success in academics and in life. Through innovative, instructional programs and the individual<br />
attention of highly qualified staff, Horizon Academy provides the only accredited program of its kind in<br />
the Kansas City area. Focusing on the whole child, we provide "intensive care" for students struggling in<br />
traditional schools with proven results.<br />
Horizon Academy expert educators use research based, multi-sensory instructional strategies that help<br />
students learn and compensate for their difficulties in a calm and quiet environment. A continuing<br />
professional partnership with the University of Kansas Center for Research on Learning ensures that<br />
Horizon Academy employs cutting-edge instructional strategies designed to help our students succeed.<br />

A measurable gain of six months is an average goal for students with learning disabilities, compared to<br />
a one-year growth expected with typical students, by the end of a school year. Prior to coming to<br />
Horizon Academy, many of our students made no gains during the year at their traditional schools.<br />

Students at Horizon Academy typically stay an<br />
average of three years working on their challenges in<br />
academics, social skills, organization and self-advocacy,<br />
before they are ready to move back to a traditional school<br />
setting. Each year approximately 20 students transition<br />
from Horizon Academy. Since 1999, we have transitioned<br />
270 students to traditional schools and graduated nine<br />
students from our high school program.

Five hundred and forty guests attended Horizon Academy’s eighth-annual Bayou Bash at Starlight<br />
Theatre. The event was co-chaired by Julie and Matt<br />
Ungashick and Tyra and Jim Zimmerman. It proved to be<br />
the most successful event we have had in our eight years<br />
of annual Mardi Gras fun. We are thankful for your support<br />
helping us raise nearly $135,000 for scholarships and<br />
programs for Horizon Academy students.<br />

Horizon Academy
New Theatre Restaurant generously gave our students the opportunity to display their artwork in<br />
their front lobby during their performances of “Spelling Bee” during several weeks this spring.<br />
Horizon Academy was able to spread the word about our program and our students helped us raise<br />
$600 for our art program through the sales of their artwork.<br />
The Elizabeth Campbell Memorial Teacher Assistant of the Year<br />
Award was given to High School teacher assistant/instructor and<br />
P.E. Teacher, Scott Guthrie. Scott is a first-year staff member at<br />
Horizon Academy and has obviously had no troubles fitting in with<br />
our program. Scott is a born educator; he has superior standards,<br />
good rapport with his students and genuinely wants all students to<br />
achieve.<br />
The Founding Board Members’ Student of the Year Award was given to 12 th grader, Josh Heeney.<br />
Josh is a hard-working, determined student. Throughout the year, he earned the respect of both staff<br />
and students at Horizon Academy. Josh is Joyful, Outgoing, Smart, and Hard-working!<br />
