Potentate’s Message
In late December 2009, no Noble
wished to assume the activities of producing
the monthly Kourier, my wife
Lorrie had produced the Kourier for 2
1/2 years prior to 2007 so I asked her to
resume her efforts. Lorrie has now produced
three Kouriers, January February
& March and still no Noble stands
to take the task from her. Don Peek
produced the magazine for two
years and could not continue
due to other commitments.
Now my friends we must find
another to take up the torch.
Lorrie has a job nowadays that
is consuming much more of her
time. Consequently, the March
issue will be the last in the present format.

month I will distribute a Potentate’s
Newsletter. Fewer pages of news and
events concentrating on Kerak Club and
Unit activities without articles.
This past month has been very busy.
A Potentate’s visitation with Kit Carson
Shrine club, a visit to Ben Ali over the
Basco Days weekend with Officer Installations.
On the 17 th we had a stated
meeting celebrating St. Valentines Day
then a trip to Las Vegas for the Zelzah
Potentate’s ball.
I would like to thank Bob
Pohlman for his unstinting efforts with
Shrine Clinics. He was a lone campaigner
in the Shoppers Square mall at
Virginia and Plumb
on the 13 th . On the
24 th he will be involved
in the periodic
visit by the Sac-
ramento hospital team, which will be
here at the Hawks clinic between
9:00am and 2:00 pm.
In April, 9/10/11 to be exact, Bob
Hayner and I are planning a golf day
with a visit to the Alabama hills for
those who don’t play golf. The golf club
has a busy week but we hope they will
be able to extend that and come on
down to Bishop. The Karavaners
are in the area and they are
working on a plan to be there in
Bishop with us, staying over
the weekend to enjoy the golf
and the Alabama hills.
Also in March we have the annual
Kerak Shrine Circus.
Andy Anderson is the 2010 Chairman
and he will need all the help he can get.
If you haven’t already volunteered then
please call Andy who will put you to
work. Circus dates are Friday March
26 th over the weekend to Sunday March
28 th . Six performances in all.
Western Shrine 2010 is in Tempe
Arizona this year hosted by El Zaribah
Temple. Dates April 21 st through April
25 th.
In May, Fred Wilson and I are planning
a trip to Elko with golf and a trip
to a gold mine. No samples will be allowed!
June 4/5/6 is Eurofest weekend at
the Sands. On the 5 th , there will be a
Ceremonial in the morning, Ladies
lunch and the Kerak Potentate’s Ball in
the evening.
So - as you can see there are many
activities planned and we hope you will
all join us as we travel

Lady Lorrie’s Letter
It is with a great deal of gratitude that I thank
the members of Kit Carson Shrine Club for the donation
given to the Potentate at his official visit. He has
decided to put your donation into the Emergency
Transportation Fund which will help with the costs of
transporting burned children to one of the Shrine Hospitals.
Also, I am so pleased that the Temple Aides will
be donating their tips to my project this year. Thank
you all! Your generosity is really important this year.
There are many worthy causes within the Shrine
system and I am pleased to be part of just one of those
projects. When a child’s life is hanging on by a thread,
stabilizing and transporting that child is most important
and very costly.
I will supply a full account of all donations to my
project for publication in the Kourier each month.
I would also like to thank the Kit Carson Shrine
Club for the beautiful necklace and earrings, handmade
by Lynn Owens, which I received at the Potentates
Official visit. For years I had looked forward to
Lynn designing and making Swarovski Crystal bracelet
as my gift to the Divan Ladies this year. Lynn’s work
is exquisite and the gifts are more beautiful then I even
expected. The gift that I received from KCSC is very special
to me. Thank you for sharing your talent.
Your Potentate and I have truly enjoyed the first
two months traveling and representing Kerak Shrine.
Seeing our Counterparts installed as Potentates and
First Ladies, after having traveled with them these
past four years, has been a heartwarming experience.
Having met one another for the first time at the Oriental
Guide school we are all so proud that we have such
a close group of friends, all the way down to Mexico
City.
Thank you to my many friends; your many telephone
calls of encouragement and support are truly appreciated.

As the wayward sands of the desert randomly
alter their course through the millennia so do the Arabians
of the mighty temple Kerak as they ply their
camel caravan through the sands of life itself.
(Sounds pretty good, doesn’t it?)
As we Arabians dust ourselves off after coursing
those desert dunes, we need to be ever vigilant for
new members we can hornswaggle into becoming our
future band members. In short, we need new members
and it will be up to us to develop those future
miscreants into becoming part of our membership.
Recent new members who so wisely chose to sign on
as apprentice camel jockeys are David Thiel, who so
wisely saw the light and possibly Bruno, whom Ron
Weaver drug in at our last meeting. It helps that our
new sultan has chosen to feed any who show up to
practice with the promise of pizza and other foodstuffs.
It helps that we have had two great practices
of late and are actually sounding like a real band,
even if it is an Arabian band at that. Arabians really
can carry a jive tune after all.
We sadly remember Harvey Gordon, one of
our premier horn players, at his passing this last
month. He will be greatly missed not only for his musical
ability but also for his camaraderie which we

will no longer enjoy until we meet beyond the sands
of time. He will truly be missed.
All of our motley crew of Arabians owes a big
debt of gratitude to Lady Liz Richard for so elegantly
organizing the repast at the temple following Harvey’s
funeral. Liz tirelessly saw to it that the throng
in attendance did not go unfed. Her efforts were instrumental
in seeing to it that the mourners were
shown a tremendous Arabian amount of hospitality
and brotherhood as they remembered our fallen
brother.
As to our upcoming activities, we Arabians
will be performing at the Jiggs’ dinner in March. I
don’t know how corned beef and cabbage will digest
after listening to our Arabian melodies, but then that’s
not our concern as much as it is to see to it that the
throng is somewhat entertained.
The Shrine Circus is upon us and will be performed
the end of March. We will need all the personnel
we can muster for support for our efforts at
making and selling cotton candy at all performances
of the Shrine Circus. Mark your calendars and prepare
your camel herd and harem for your absence
during the days and nights of all the performances of
the Shrine Circus as you will be helping the Arabian
band members make and hustle cotton candy.
May your camel thrive and your harem grow
as you ply the shifting, burning sands of the desert of
the mighty Kerak until we meet again.

KERAK GOLF CLUB
We were back at the Lakeridge Golf
Course 19 th Hole for our monthly meeting on
Thursday, February 11 th . John Reed, after
all had ordered lunch, opened the meeting
with a presentation of a new point system for
the Golfer of the Year award.
After some discussion, it was agreed by all
that we would adopt the system outlined in
the last Kourier whereby points would be assigned
each tournament to the top four winners
and at the end of the season, the top four
plus all other members will compete at the
Ridge Golf Course (Auburn) to determine a
Golfer of the Year. Tom Buntin’s idea to also
incorporate points for attendance at all
events was considered not fair to those who
couldn’t attend because of work or obligations.
If you have any objections or suggestions
to the plan, contact John or come to the
next meeting.
John also stated that the handicap system
would be the same as last year. The lower of
the GHIN and club handicap number will be
used. In order to ensure the scores are correctly
recorded, it was suggested that your
playing partner or some other player in your
group record your score. Scores should also
be announced to all after finishing a hole. We
didn’t have time to discuss the rules, but
John will be putting them out by the next
meeting. And finally, if you haven’t paid your
dues of $25, please pay John Reed.

In January we have a terrific turn out at the Agave.
For the Nobles who were in attendance, THANK
YOU!!! I'm sure each of you enjoyed the
"Installation" performed by our Jr. Past Director Jim
Wipf as much as John Little and I did. With the permission
of the "Crew", I along with a few other Nobles
I wrangle up will be putting in shelves and Noble
Art Cline is donating a filing cabinet to keep
some of our paperwork in; as a reference for our
future Directors.
The future is quickly approaching which means that
the time has come for our annual fundraiser, The
Shrine Circus, at the request of our Chief Rabban,
Andy Anderson, the "Crew" will continue to take tickets
at the door this year. Noble Bobby Hall has
kindly taken the lead on the scheduling of members
to work the doors. So if you haven't heard from him
yet I'm sure you will soon. Oh, and for those of you
that will be working at the Circus we will be having
our annual breakfast Saturday March 27th, 2010 at
Carrows at 8 am.
If your lucky you might overhear two guys chatting
at the counter.
One says "Did you know that Lions have sex 10 to
15 times a night?"
"Damn" says his friend. "I just joined the Shrine."

The Joeys are preparing themselves
for the Circus to take
place on 26-27-28 this month. They will be
practicing making balloon animals and getting
their clown outfits in order.
Our Chief Clown, Darrell "Dario" Norman, has
been busy in recent weeks assembling a trailer
so we can transport our clown car "Sweet Pea"
to the parades.
He has also visited St. Mary's and Renown hospitals
to get permission to make periodic visits
to patients. St. Mary's has given the Yoonit
permission to visit, but he is still going through
some red tape with Renown.
Anyone who doesn't belong to a Unit or Club
and would like to consider joining the Klown
Yoonit, drop in at one of our meetings. We

As well all know, this is our biggest fund raiser of the year for the Shrine, and it
can’t happen without YOUR HELP! So, I hope to see you there!
We are having a kick-off lunch at 12:00 noon at the temple. The date has been
changed to March 20th due to a scheduling conflict.

On Monday February 2,2010, the
Greeters met at B'Sghettis for
our annual Sweetheart Dinner.
Food was great with heart packaged
chocolates for our Sweethearts
deserts. Ten couples attended
and a short business meeting preceding
the dinner. Good fellowship and conversation
made for a noisy meeting hall. Discussed were
the yearly picnic, (August 22, 2010)results of the
survey, the circus, Kourier and assignment of
special offices. The Potentates Bolo's were distributed
to the members.
The Meeting for March will be held at "El Adobe"
Mexican Restaurant, 55 West Arroyo, on the
8th. Cocktails at 5:30 PM and meal at 6:30 with
short meeting in between.

We had a good turn out for our February meeting.
We were trying Jack's Restaurant in Franktown
Corners and we were very happy with lunch and
the location.
Lois Weaver, Vice President was President Pro-
Tem and did a great job.
Our Sunshine Chair-lady Lila Porteous is back in
the pink and ready to send cards. Her number is
359-4394. If you know of someone who is under the
weather or just needs a little cheering-up please let
her know.
These few days of sunshine have sure lifted my
spirits and I am enjoying it while I can.
Our next meeting is going to be March 15 at
Jack's Restaurant the corner of Kietzke and Grove
in Franktown Corners. AND you can get your car
washed at the same time.
We like to see new faces and if you like to eat
come on out and join us. If you need further information

The April meeting will be held at the Kerak Circus,
Saturday, 27 th March, between the 2 nd and 3 rd performances.
May 13-16, is still scheduled for Weed Heights. The
reservations have been made so you just pay $20/night
when you check in. We are charging $15/pp for Saturday
lunch and dinner (steaks). Please RSVP to Dick Hawkins
or Steve Sanders so we know how much food to buy.
The Friday night potluck is still on the agenda, same as
years past.
We discussed the weekend of September 3-6, for our
trip to Jackson Rancheria RV Park. A deposit of $100
has been made for 12 rigs. If you are interested please
contact Dick Hawkins or Steve Sanders by August 3 rd.
We will have the brochure at the dinner March 1 st.

The Alabama Hills are a popular location for television and movie productions
(especially Westerns) set in an archetypical "rugged" environment.
Since the early 1920s, 150 movies and about a dozen television shows have
been filmed here, including Tom Mix films, Hopalong Cassidy films, The
Gene Autry Show, and The Lone Ranger. Classics such as Gunga Din,
Springfield Rifle, and How the West Was Won, as well as more recent
productions such as Tremors and Joshua Tree, were filmed at sites
known as Movie Flats and Movie Flat Road. In Gladiator, actor Russell Crowe
rides a horse in front of the Alabamas, with Mount Whitney in the background, for a
scene presumably set in Spain. Star Trek Generations was filmed here in addition to
Overton, Nevada and Paramount Studios. More recently, many parts of the films
Iron Man and Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen were filmed here.

There will be a joint hospitality room, but during the ball there will be a NO
host bar. Full facilities of the hotel, including the pool will be available Friday,
Saturday and Sunday of course.
We are asking all Shriners to wear their Fez as much as possible around the
hotel and outside. Remember that all of the proceeds from this event will go
to support the Burned Children’s Emergency Transportation Fund. The hotel
staff are looking forward to a good showing of Shriners!
