MARCH 4 

Polar Bear Day - Swim for Sight 

Olcott's popular Polar Bear 'Swim for 

Sight' is the first Sunday of March 

each year. In it's 43rd year, the swim 

is sponsored by the Olcott Lions Club 

and attracts several thousand 

spectators that cheer on more than 

1000 brave swimmers - many in 

costumes - as they frolic in the icy 

water of Lake Ontario at Olcott's 

Krull Park beach. The 'Swim for 

Sight' is a successful fundraiser that 

benefits blindness prevention; and 

many local charities. There is fun and 

food on Main Street, tailgate parties 

and a festive time from l0am to about 

4pm. Admission and parking are 

free. Swimmers raise funds from 

sponsors. Information and photos

The Town of Newfane, with one of 

the best one-two punches of Olcott 

and Burt Dam/Eighteenmile Creek 

on the lake, has arguably some of 

the best freshwater fishing on the 

planet! Whether it's salmon, trout, 

bass, pike or perch, there's some 

type of fishing activity that the whole 

family can enjoy! And, you can catch 

fish year-round in this agriculturallyrich 

community. Here are some 

excellent examples for arguing that 

point: 

A Lock on the LOC … Derbies – 

The derby run stopped at five. Last 

year (2011) was another excellent 

year for salmon and trout fishing. 

The Niagara County shoreline, led 

by the popular port of Olcott, was at 

the top of its game when it came to 

the 2011 spring, summer and fall 

Lake Ontario Counties (LOC) Trout 

and Salmon derbies. For the first 

time in the history of the lake 

derbies, all three Grand Prize 

winners came from one county in 

2010 – Niagara. That was nearly 

duplicated in 2011 when two of the 

top three came from Niagara – a run 

of five straight Grand Prize winners! 

In the Spring derby, more than 60 

percent of all the winning salmon 

and trout came from Niagara County 

– again – with many of those prizewinners 

caught off Olcott. The 

Grand Prize checked in at 27 

pounds, 14 ounces, reeled in by 

Christa Saunderson of Ransomville. 

This year the winning fish was a lake 


trout. For the Summer Derby, it was 

Marty Polovick of Lockport with 

another Niagara County fish, a 36 

pound, 14 ounce king salmon. It 

was bigger than the winner of the 

Fall Derby! While a Niagara fish led 

most of the way in August, the derby 

trifecta wasn't to be this year. If you

2011 Held Lots of Fun Fishing 

Events – 

Newfane/Olcott was the 

host to many fun fishing and family 

events throughout the summer. The 

27th Annual Skip Hartman 

Memorial Lake Ontario Pro-Am 

Salmon Team Tournament was held 

June 4-5 last year and a near record 

90 teams competed for over 

$60,000 in cash and prizes. The top 

pro team was a Canadian team led 

by Yvan Charrois of Port Colbourne, 

Ontario and the Get it Wet squad. 

The top amateur team was from 

New York led by the Prize Fighter 

team of West Monroe, NY. The big 

news was the fact that the Pro and 

Amateur divisions brought over 

1,700 fish to the scales weighing in 

at better than 13,600 pounds! The 

2012 event promises to be even 

bigger and better, with this event 

being the kick-off to three others that 

form the Lake Ontario Challenge

Newfane / Olcott Is The Place To Be For Fishing! 

The 35th Annual Greater Niagara 

Fish Odyssey Derby was held 

August 20-28, moving it a month 

earlier to accommodate better lake 

fishing and the fact that the kids are 

out of school. The weather was 

decent and the fish cooperated 

nicely for this local contest that 

focuses on kids and family. Kids are 

free to fish and compete for a ton of 

merchandise prizes. Log on to

Dates for 2012 are tentatively set 

forAugust 18-26. 

The Buffalo Sabres Alumni (along 

with some current players and 

personalities) invaded Olcott last 

June once again for the 4th annual 

Spring Salmon Spectacular, 

bringing boats from around the lake 

to assist the local captains in a 

fund-raising effort. They had to tie 

the contest into Pro-Am week 

because it has become so popular! 

A total of 28 boats were lined up to 

compete in the fun contest but 

strong winds made for some rough 

conditions and they decided to hold 

the cookout without any of the 

fishing action. They will be back on 

the water in 2012. Look for May 31 

to be the date as a precursor to the 

Pro-Am – making it a special

Memorial One-Day Three Fish/One 

Fish Contest that is held the Friday 

before the two-day Pro-Am (June 1 

this year). This fun-filled contest 

allows teams to head out into the 

lake in pursuit of their three biggest 

fish for a total weight to determine 

who the winners are. There is also a 

prize for biggest fish overall. There 

really aren't any rules to abide by 

other than times and that the fish 

must be caught legally. You don't 

even need to be fishing in the Pro- 

Am tournament. It's an opportunity 

to take advantage of the local 

fishery, win some cash prizes, raise 

some money for local charities or 

worthy causes and help remember 

two people who meant a lot to the 

local fishing scene. To find out more

Lake Ontario Stream Creel 

Census Highlights Eighteenmile 

Creek -- 

The stream creel census is back, 

with census takers hanging around 

in the fall and winter of 2011-2012 

and into the spring. This is a follow 

up to an earlier census. DEC 

completed two years of a creel 

census in the tributaries in the 

spring of 2007 and one of the top 

streams in the entire state when it 

comes to fish numbers based on 

this creel is 18 Mile Creek right here 

in the Town of Newfane. Of course, 

Burt Dam and Fisherman's Park is 

the primary destination. Based on 

those results of the two years, this 

favorite waterway blew the rest of 

the lake away when it came to 



brown trout catch from the middle of 

September to the end of November 

2005. For that short timeframe, 18 

Mile Creek had an estimated catch 

of nearly 23,000 brown trout! It was 

four times the amount of any other 

New York tributary. In 2006, the 

dominance was duplicated for 

browns. While there weren't as 

many fish caught, it was still head 

and shoulders above any other 

stream. Eighteenmile Creek was 

also at or near the top for steelhead, 

coho salmon and king salmon for 

both years of the creel. Based on 

numbers like 

these, 18 Mile 

Creek is an 

excellent 

waterway to 

target if you 

want as close 

to a guarantee 

as it gets when 

it comes to 

salmon and 

trout fishing.

Net Pen Project Continues – 

Spearheaded by the Lake Ontario 

Trout and Salmon Association, 

Olcott will once again host a net pen 

project for salmon and steelhead in 

2012, the fifth year in a row for such 

a project. Some 50 volunteers were 

involved to help rear 67,000 salmon 

at the Town of Newfane Marina. 

Other groups involved were the 

Newfane Business Association, the 

Niagara County Fisheries 


Development Board and the Town 

of Newfane. County Legislator 

John Syracuse, The Slippery 

Sinker, the Niagara River Anglers 

Association and DEC all played a 

role in the success of the project. 

Funds are now being supplied by 

LOTSA through an annual Lake 

Ontario Flea Market and Show held 

at the 4-H Building of Cornell 

Cooperative Extension Niagara, 

Lockport. This year's event will be 

held Feb. 26. This group in now in 

the fifth year of rearing 3,500 

steelhead in a third pen to help 

improve the survival rates of these 

fish and imprint 

them to the 

waters of 18 

Mile Creek.

the first four 

years was 

outstanding, both in the way of local 

support and in how the fish reacted 

to the 18 Mile Creek site. The fish 

grew big and healthy in a relatively

Krull Park, 

where lake country 

fun begins! 

Niagara County's Krull Park is a 

beautiful recreational complex 

with excellent views and access 

to Lake Ontario. On a hot summer 

day, the park is packed with 

families laughing and playing, 

children frolicking in the Krull Park Splash Park, a beach full of swimmers, and 

playing fields echoing with cheering fans. Even with all the activity, the park is 

relaxing and a pleasure to explore. 

The 325-acre park had its beginnings in the late 19th century when lakeside 

tourism was an important revenue stream for the railroad industry. Olcott 

Beach was a popular resort destination up until the late 1930s when the last of 

the great hotels was demolished. Remnants of the Olcott Beach Hotel's 

foundation still stands today, just south of the swimming beach at Krull Park. 

The stonework walls add some character to the park and pique visitors' interest 

into the history of this site. 

The section of the park north of Main Street is often referred to as Olcott 

Beach, and is a shaded mix of walkways, pavilions, and picnic tables. The sandy 

swimming beach is also located in this section of the park. 

South of Olcott Beach is home to fun for the whole family, where numerous 

small shelters host many get togethers. You can also bring your little ones to 

play on our two playgrounds, and will find basketball and tennis courts 

alongside the park road. Krull Park also has an updated fitness trail, or for those 

that need peace and quiet, numerous groves in this section offer a peaceful spot 

to sit, read and relax in the shade. 

The massive southeast portion of the park is where all the sport and playing 

fields are located. Amateur league teams often play here, but most of the time 

you can find an open field for a game of catch. Aside from the baseball 

diamonds and soccer fields, this park also has a designated model airplane field 

and even horseshoe pits. Even in the winter, Krull Park still attracts visitors for 

cross-country skiing and ice-skating. 

There are so many things to do in Krull Park year-round, it is considered one of 

the best family parks to visit in western New York.

Chateau Niagara, a relatively 

recent addition, is in Newfane. 

If you're a gardener, you'll want to 

check out Zehr's on the Lake in 

Burt, which, like many area 

nursery and greenhouse 

operations, doubles as a farm 

market. In Newfane, visit Zehr

Greenhouses, whose garden shop 

has a line of all American-made 

gifts and accessories, and

educational tours and a tearoom for 

private parties as well as retail and 

wholesale gifts and produce. If you 

love crisp, juicy apples even in the 


winter, you can thank the Niagara 

Fresh Fruit Co., who coordinates 

the stock of 40 regional growers, 

keeping it fresh and refrigerated 

until it reaches grocers all over the 

world. Most farms grow a wide 

assortment of fruits and 

vegetables, but Hillers Farm 

Market specializes in the freshest 

of sweet corn—picked 

hourly—and Kappus Farms is a 

giant in cherries—the outfit has 

sold over 40,000 pounds of 

them—just to U-Pick customers. 

In Newfane, Pipiles Farm Market 

operates a U-Pick as well, offering 

blueberries, raspberries, 

blackberries, peas and beans 

along with pre-harvested 

cherries, peaches, apricots, 

plums, sweet corn and assorted 

vegetables. Russell's, in 

Appleton, is strictly highbush 

blueberries. You can pick them 

yourself or bring them home by 

the peck. In Wright's Corners, 

pick strawberries and tomatoes at 

Peterson's and strawberries and 

raspberries at Bye's "Strawberry 

Ranch" Farm Market.

VAN HORN MANSION 

2165 Lockport Olcott Rd, Newfane, NY 14108 

This beautifully restored mansion is open for tours every Sunday from 

1-4pm excluding holidays and closed January to March. 

Stop in for a complete guided tour from cellar to attic which includes history of the house 

and its occupants including Malinda, the resident ghost! The focal point of the house is the 

dazzling stained glass skylight, imported from Paris, France. The owner had to move the 

staircase and build a third floor and leaded glass dome above to accommodate it. The tours 

are approximately one half hour; the suggested donation is $5 per person. 

Special events at the mansion include: 

• Candlelight Tours held on Oct. 5,6,12,13,19,20,26,27. Hear about the ghostly 

legends and haunts of the mansion. Bring your imagination and courage as you tour the 

mansion by candlelight. 7-llpm Admission is $5. Call Rose at 622-6709 for information and

• Victorian Holiday 1863 Candlelight tours feature costumed guides and actors 

who inhabit the home as the Van Horn family. Victorian tour dates are Nov 16th & 17th

• Annual Holiday Carol Sing at the mansion held on Dec 2 from 1-4 pm. Come and

Celebrate Olcott Beach Carousel Park's 10th Season!

They said it couldn't be done! They said it would never last! But, 

here we are in our tenth season of an all volunteer, 25 cent ride, vintage 

kiddie park! 

So much has happened 

since we opened our doors in 

May of 2003. The park began 

as a grassroots movement 

under the chairmanship of 

Rosemary Sansone. With the 

help of many dedicated 

volunteers it raised enough 

money to restore the 1940's 

carousel roundhouse and to 

purchase a 1928 Herschell- 

Spillman carousel. Today the 

gravelly lot of the park has been 

replaced with smooth blacktop 

and 5 vintage kiddie rides and shelters where they are operated have been 

added. In addition, there are 6 vintage Skee Ball machines, a rocking chair 

pavilion, an outdoor theater with an audience shelter, a vintage arcade and 

brand new bathrooms. 

If you haven't visited the park, you must 

come, as seeing is believing. If you are a 

regular, you will be eager to see our most recent 

addition to our arcade - a 1940/50 Erie Digger. 

New to the park this year is a permanent fence 

around the carousel that matches the crowd 

control gates at the vintage kiddie rides and the 

Ferris wheel fencing. Located near our picnic 

area are newly built bathrooms with baby 

changing stations. There is also an information 

kiosk located on the side of the building to help 

you keep abreast of local and park events. The 

bathrooms were a result of donations,

fundraising by volunteers and a Greenway 

Grant. 

Since this is our tenth season, we have 

many great things planned , especially a big 

celebration on August 26th. Look for stage shows on the following dates: 

July 14 & 15 at 2 PM (Janice Spagnola's Family Magic Puppet Show); 

August 26 at 12:15 & 3:15 p.m. ( Sleeping Beauty Puppet Play by 

Omnipresent Theater); and September 3 at 2:30 p.m. (Rob and Carol 

Allen's Magic Show). 


There is also a new 

schedule this year. The park will 

open Saturday, Sunday and 

Monday of Memorial Day Weekend 

from 12 - 6 PM. June hours are still 

Saturday and Sunday 12 - 6 PM. 

During July and August, we have 

added a day. The park will be open 

Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and 

Sunday from 12 - 6 p.m. and 

Saturday 12 - 8 p.m. The last day of 

the season that the park will be 

open will be Labor Day, from 12 - 6 

p.m. We hope to see you this year 

and because it is our 10th season,
