Local artist paints a new canvas for Margate
According to a local Margate
business the beautification of the
area did come at the expense
and inconvenience of many local
businesses.
Trees were planted at regular
intervals along Oxley Avenue
to make for a visually pleasant
streetscape. Unfortunately a lot of
the offices and shops in this area
were built back in the day when large
awnings were popular to provide
shelter along the footpath. Now with
the location of trees along those
same footpaths, a lot of businesses
are no longer visually recognisable
as signs promoting and advertising
the location of individual shops or
offices have now become blocked
by these trees.
According to Christina Bakker of
RB Lawyers, “In our situation we
also had the additional problem of
a large 16 metre wall on the corner
of Oxley Avenue, running down
Wighton Street that had been for
many years a wonderful billboard
advertisement
for our business.
“Now with the trees planted our
expensive signage was no longer
visible.
“Graffiti vandalism has long been
a problem, however with this large
expanse of wall now vacant we
were being attacked weekly by
graffiti vandals.
“This grew both tiresome and
expensive to fix,” she said.
The idea of a mural came to the
owner of the building, Christina
Bakker, in a dream. With much
excitement the artist in her dream
looked, from behind, suspiciously
like renowned local artist Tricia
Reust.
After encouragement from one
of Tricia’s art students to approach
Tricia with this dream vision,
Christina’s excitement when
Tricia accepted the challenge was
matched only by Tricia’s excitement
to realise Christina’s dream.
The mural is over three metres
high and more than 13 metres long
and depicts a wonderful scene from
the Margate/Woody Point foreshore.
A special coating will be applied
to ensure that bored youth do
not destroy this wonderful and
remarkable wall of art. Security
cameras have also been placed
around the building to assist in
catching vandals.
The mural is well underway and
it has already drawn much talk
amongst the community and many
visitors.
Funding for local multicultural projects
The Member for Murrumba, Reg
Gulley MP, has urged community
organisations to apply for
Queensland Government grants
of up to $10,000 for community
projects or to stage multicultural
events next year.
The 2013 Multicultural
Queensland Partnerships Program
grants round was announced
today by the Minister for Aboriginal
and Torres Strait Islander and
Multicultural Affairs Glen Elmes.
Mr Gulley said funding is available
for activities in four categories:
multicultural festivals, cultural
heritage events, strengthening
capacity projects and week-long
festivals.
“This funding gives local
organisations the chance to stage
events that truly reflect their own
community,” Mr Gulley said.
“Locals can come together,
acknowledge and celebrate their
differences in their own backyard -
Murrumba’s diversity is increasing
New grant to help first home owners and construction industry in Murrumba
Murrumba first home buyers
and the construction industry are
set to benefit from the most
generous ongoing first home owner
grant in Australia in the Newman
Government's first budget.
Reg Gulley MP said first home
buyers would receive $15,000 - up
from $7,000 - when purchasing a
newly constructed home or property
off the plan, under the re-shaped
First Home Owner Construction
Grant (formerly First Home
Owner Grant).
"This new grant will benefit first
home buyers and give the local
construction industry a much
needed boost," Mr Gulley said.
"First home owners buying a newly
constructed or off-the-plan property
who sign a contract on or after
September 12 will receive $15,000,
a great head start on paying off their
mortgage.
Mr Gulley said this generous
grant was aimed at making home
ownership more affordable.
"We've already wiped $7,000 off
the cost of buying the family home
by reinstating the principal place of
residence transfer duty concession,"
he said.
The local construction industry is
also set to benefit from the targeted
and ongoing initiative.
"The construction industry is one
of the four pillars of the Queensland
economy, along with tourism,
agriculture and resources," he said.
"It is a major job generator and
important to our local economy
and the First Home Owners
Construction Grant will help get the
sector powering along again.
BANG ON 1st 1350m. Timed her
run home to perfection, settled right
at the end of the field, pulled out
rounding the turn and hauled them
in. It was her first start after a spell,
and this effort was very impressive,
she'll be hard to hold out next run,
and must be considered.
LISELLE 1st 1200m. Had to work
hard to get her apple this time under
the massive weight she lugged
around, raced close to the lead with
BEGGIN the second placegetter,
and a runner who has never been
unplaced over this distance, these
two had a ding dong battle down
the straight with LISELLE doing the
better, however, keep your eye on
SEA MARVISTA, she is in top form
and was consistent all the way, to
finish less than a half a length from
LISELLE.
DANAGAZE 1st 1600m. Would've
won by a greater margin if he
hadn't had to wait for a hole to go
through until around the 100 metre
SOLZHENITSYN 1st 1350m.
Had a bit of a rough start this time,
knocked in to a barrier partition
almost flattening his jockey, this was
his fourth start over this distance
and has made it four out of four and
was his first start after a spell. He
has a top record on dry tracks, gave
this a really good shake under a big
weight. Four wins in a row now for
this fellow, don't dismiss.
ATTICA 1st 2200m. Had his mind
right on the job and settled nicely
in the running. Had moved forward
to be running second rounding the
turn, took the lead about 250 metre
out and fought off the eye opener
flying home like a jet and is also one
to watch. ATTICA is now on a hat
major factor.
SOMEDAY 1st 1350m. Still
maintains his 100 percent place
rate with three firsts and three
seconds from six starts. Has been
trained exceedingly well, gives the
impression that theres still more to
come, sat in the right spot just off
the pace till straightening for home,
where showed he's just that good,
however one to note who came
home like a whirlwind is ALVITAS.
He had the afterburners going full
pelt, and will be hard to hold out
next time.
I'M COOL 1st 1110m. Went out
the one the punters wanted proved
he's got the bottle and has been
placed at every start. Sat second
to DOUBLE IMAGE until the turn,
then he headed for the post. Held
off MERRYANNA who was trying
hard to win and must go down in
your book, she'll be better for this
and just might rock their boats next
time, one to watch.
