NEWSLETTER
NEWSLETTER
TERM 1 : O CTO BER 2011
I hope you enjoy reading our first newsletter. I am sure you will agree that it is a very impressive
publication and provides for you a flavour of our provision and the range of activities in which our students
are involved. Please do encourage your child to take advantage of the wide range of enrichment
opportunities that are available within the Academy.
As we come to the end of our first term I must express my appreciation to our staff who have responded
magnificently to the demands of opening our Academy on two campuses and the challenges it has
presented. There is a buzz of expectation and excitement amongst staff and students working together and
a real sense of a 'new beginning' as we plan for the future. Thank you for supporting our tutor evenings.
We are committed to improving our communication with parents and our Every Child Known agenda is
dependant on building productive relationships with you as parents. Please do not hesitate to contact your
child's tutor as the first line of communication in all matters relating to your child. In addition we would
welcome your involvement in our Parents' Forum (Page 19).
We held a very successful Open Evening followed by several morning sessions. The feedback has been
overwhelmingly positive and our goal is to become the school of choice for our local community. I am
confident more and more families will choose the Academy when they see the quality and range of our
provision.
I hope you have an enjoyable mid-term break.
The Principal, Jenny Jones, said, “It was wonderful
seeing the Academy so busy both at our Open
Evening and our open mornings. The feedback we
have received has been extremely positive and we
are confident that many parents will be making The
St Leonards Academy their first choice.”

THE ST LEONARDS ACADEMY
SHOWCASING OUR SPECIALISMS OF MATHS AND ICT
AT THE ST LEONARDS ACADEMY
The St Leonards Academy specialises in Maths and
ICT. This was recently showcased at the Open
Evening where Year 6 students had great fun in the
planetarium that was created in the Academy's new
interactive teaching resource, of which there are
only three in the country. This was purchased by
The Hastings Academies Trust to support teaching
and learning as part of the academies' new ICT
Specialist status. Students across the academies
will have lots of opportunities for learning in this
new space over the coming year.
Celebrating the Academy's Maths Specialism, Years
7 and 8 students recently enjoyed building bridges,
shelters and spaceships during `Architecture Maths'
at the Darwell Campus. One student said, "That
was the best lesson I have ever had". Year 9 and
10 students from Edinburgh and Darwell Campuses
thoroughly enjoyed the 'BP Challenge' too. It
provided an excellent opportunity for developing
learning about Maths in real life contexts, as
students competed to trade barrels of oil in a
virtual marketplace and respond to
events and market changes. This really
engaged students and resulted in some
fierce competition to make as much
profit as possible! While they were
concentrating on beating the other teams
they were learning to analyse data and
make decisions using their mathematical
skills and reasoning whilst also having to
accurately record and calculate their
trades. These 'Architecture Maths' and
'BP Challenge' workshops proved to be
successful ways to get students learning
and using complex mathematical skills
whilst also having fun!
Watch out for more 'Specialist Events'
next term.
ST LEONARDS ACADEMY CROSS COUNTRY RUN 2011
Over 150 students were involved in either running or
marshalling the annual Cross Country run last week, hosted
on Edinburgh Campus. Runners from three primary schools
attended, St Paul’s CE, St Leonards CE, and West St
Leonards primary schools, as well as secondary school
runners from both campuses of the Academy. It was great
to see our students making such a good impression on the
younger pupils and being such excellent sports leaders.
The secondary school boys’ race, Year 8, was won by Josh
Paige, with Harry Jackson and Sean Boyd Stevenson taking
second and third. In the Year 7 race Harry Mitchell, Josh
Williams and Matthew Rea took Gold, Silver and Bronze. The
girls’ event was won by Gabriel Woods, with Chloe Stretton, also of Year 8, taking second place. Edna
Mbanwi took the top spot in Year 7, with Elle Rhodes taking second.
ST LEONARDS ACADEMY
TABLE TENNIS CLUB
A great start has been made to the Hastings
and District Table Tennis League with 13
teams entered in both Division 1 and 2. We
have over 20 players from both the Darwell
and Edinburgh campuses registered, but we
need a few more for Division 2. If you would
like to come and play, Table Tennis takes
place on the Edinburgh Campus 5.30pm-
7.30pm on a Wednesday in term time.
See Mrs Bennett in the PE Department for
more details or just turn up!
KEN LOACH
COMPETITION
On Thursday 6 October 20 students from all
years took part in a Film Club competition. It
was to mark the 75th birthday of celebrated
British director, Ken Loach. Having watched
Kes, the students then spent the day writing
stories and poems to enter the 'Between the
Lines' competition. The
standard was very high and
hopefully the judges will be
equally impressed with The
St Leonards Academy's
creativity. The stories and
poems will be published
locally, available at £2.00
per copy.
CELEBRATING
BLACK HISTORY MONTH
at the St Leonards Academy with Capoeira
October is Black History Month; a time for raising
awareness of the cultural heritage and achievements of
people whose ancestors originated from Africa.
Here at The St Leonards Academy a group of Year 8
pupils took part in a two-day workshop exploring
Capoeira, the music, dance and martial arts developed
in Brazil by African slaves and their descendants. Pupils
observed the traditions and customs of the art
throughout the workshop by showing respect for each
other and working together. During the two days they
all had the opportunity to sing, create music using
traditional instruments, and practice their martial arts
movements. It was a great experience and pupils had
lots of fun trying out new skills, playing Capoeira and
making new friends.

OLD UNIFORM SENT TO AFRICA
More than 1000 old and new school uniforms were
shipped to Africa over the summer. Mr Mativenga
organised for T-shirts to be sent to Chisungo School
in Zimbabwe. They were so excited about receiving
them, even the teachers had been trying them on!!
The uniforms will be used during sports events and
the different colour logos will finally allow pupils the
opportunity to represent their team. 500 jumpers
have also been shared between three local villages
in the Midland Provence.
Boxes of uniforms have also been shipped to Sierra
Leone. The clothes arrived safely at Huntingdon
Junior and Senior Secondary School, who The St
BP TRADING CHALLENGE HITS HASTINGS!
THE ST LEONARDS ACADEMY
Leonards Academy continues to have a strong link
with. The local community are also going to use the
uniform during special events. Teachers at the
school extend their thanks to all staff, pupils and
parents who have supported the link.
Amber Rudd, the local MP, has expressed her thanks
by writing a letter to the school: "This is a
wonderful gesture by staff and pupils from the old
Filsham Valley School and it is an excellent project
to show young people in Hastings and St Leonards
that children in other parts of the world do not have
the same advantages that we take for granted in
this country."
In the first cross academy enterprise event both St
Leonards and Hastings academies welcomed
representatives of BP to their venues so that students could
experience the buying and selling of shares on the stock
market.
Nearly 500 students across three sites benefited from the
experience, with teams working to make the most of the
'money' they had to play with. Enterprise and employability
skills were to the fore - along with a real-life application of
numeracy.
As in real life trading, there were some who invested wisely
and were rewarded with a healthy bank balance - others
were left nursing a substantial debt. All left the experience
with a greater understanding of the stock market, and an
enhanced ability in terms of teamwork and decision
making!
YEAR 7: TURING
"The fact remains that everyone who taps at a keyboard,
opening a spreadsheet or a word-processing program, is
working on an incarnation of a Turing machine." Alan Turing
spent his childhood at Baston Lodge in Upper Maze Hill.
WELCOME TO YEAR 7
The start of a new academic year is always daunting for pupils, even more so
when starting at a new secondary school. Term 1 saw the first cohort of the
new Academy settling into a solid routine. Our Year 7 classes were the first to
use our newly refurbished suite of learning spaces and classrooms, testing out
the new furniture, equipment and technology. We have focussed on settling the
new students into their classes and helping them make new friends. Our
introductory units of work have been linked with some of the projects students
worked on near the end of Year 6, particularly the Anne Frank project. Through
interviews and informal discussions, students have said that they are enjoying
their lessons, especially Science where they made plant and animal cells.
Our after school clubs for Year 7 have been popular so far. The Art & Craft
club has been well attended with some fantastic pieces being produced. The
Year 7 Book Club and our K'Nex Technology Club are growing in numbers, and
the Glee Club has started on Friday mornings. Over thirty five students
attended our first football and netball trials and the recent matches have
proved exciting. The Cyber Café has opened, and students will be able to
access it after before and after school hours.
All in all it has been an extremely positive start to Year 7 and we are all
looking forward to a successful year ahead!
STUDENTS’ OPINIONS
Jack Harris - This term at the St
Leonards Academy I have had a
very good time. We are reading a
very good book called Once. It's
about a boy called Felix who leaves
an orphanage and tries to find his
mum and dad, but he bumps into a
groups of Nazis and things change
for Felix a lot. Also in my first term we learnt about
the Hastings fishing industry and the net huts - we
have made 1/38 scale models of them. Another
thing I have enjoyed at the Academy is Football Club
after school on a Wednesday.
Yas Akar - I am having a great
time. The St Leonards Academy is
the best. Everyone is so nice and
caring. The lessons are fun
because, before I came here I
hated Science, but now I love it.
Those are two of the
06 thousands of things I love.
Elisha Jackson &
Ashley Hills - This
term we had lots of
fun. We first met
our teacher Mrs
Doherty. She is a very nice teacher. We then met our
Principal, Mrs Jones; Our Vice Principal, Mr Burgess
and Our Head of School, Mr Vice. We then got
planners and timetables. It is weird going from being
the oldest in the school but it has still been great fun
because being the youngest means you aren't being
relied on by a whole school of kids. As the term
went by classes got better and better, and we all
made more and more friends. We really enjoyed our
first term and hopefully next term
will be as good.
Jessica Newberry - My first term…
well what can I say? It has been the
best start to school ever. I was
nervous at first but I've settled in
well and made friends quickly.
DYSLEXIA
AWARENESS
WEEK
As part of Dyslexia
Awareness Week, 31
October- 6 November, the
Year 7 Turing School will
be involved in a project
to promote understanding
and awareness of
dyslexia. This project
aims to show others not
only what it is like to be
dyslexic but to also
celebrate different
learning styles and to
appreciate the special
talents and abilities of
dyslexic students.

PRIDE THROUGH SUCCESS
08
It gives me great pleasure to update you with details of my new role in the
academies. For our new parents, we were very fortunate to be awarded the
Excellence in Enterprise award from Warwick University. This was awarded to the
academy, as it was felt our plans for enterprise would continue into the future.
We intend to continue to offer enterprising opportunities both within the
curriculum and as optional activities.
I am working closely with Mr Boniface and University Centre Hastings (UCH) to ensure that all of our
students are involved in a range of enrichment activities. We will aim to stretch our most able,
through activities such as master classes, whilst raising aspirations for many others by demonstrating
how accessible and valuable a university education can be.
We strongly believe that by providing our students with enrichment
and enterprise opportunities and experiences, they will develop the
essential employability and life skills that will enable them to
become effective citizens and employees in the 21st century.
The academy recognises how important it is to deliver high quality Careers Education
Information Advice and Guidance (CEIAG) to enable our learners to make career decisions
in a well-informed manner, linked to their interests, capabilities and aspirations.
To demonstrate our commitment to CEIAG, the academy has decided to work towards
achieving the investors in careers award. This is a quality standard that will recognise the
positive impact we are making on our learners. We will offer a range of workshops for
parents and carers to help you support your children in making choices that will enable
them to make informed decisions about their education, training and employment options.
In the pipeline are workshops on the qualification framework, completing college
application forms, a careers fair and independent careers advice available on request at
parents evenings. Please don’t hesitate to get in touch if you feel there are other areas
you would like to find out more about. g.dearman@hasla.org.uk

PRIDE THROUGH SUCCESS
ENRICHMENT
I'd like to introduce myself to anyone who has not
come across me so far, and let you know about my
exciting new role within the Academy. Officially my
title is Deputy Curriculum Leader for Enrichment,
Enterprise and Employability. My main role is to
make sure that all students participate in enjoyable
and engaging Enrichment activities, that being
anything that happens beyond the normal
curriculum such as extra-curricular clubs. This
process is underway and I hope you are pleasantly
surprised by the amount of opportunities our staff
are already providing beyond their lessons. In the
centre of this newsletter you will find a timetable of
activities which you can pull out and have available
to look at. I'm sure we already have something that
will be of interest to your sons and daughters, but
Living the Olympic
and Paralympic Values
ROCK CHALLENGE
This year we will be entering a piece based on the town’s
fishing history. The students have already visited the
fisherman’s museum to research the topic and we will be
doing some site-specific work down at the beach in the
coming weeks. If you know of anyone or have yourselves
any fishing items such as nets, buoys or anchors we would
love to use these for inspiration or as part of what we hope
will be another award-winning set! Rock Challenge will be
on Thursday 29 March 2012 so make a note in your
12 diary early!
rest assured there will be more around the corner
which I will keep you informed of. It is also
massively important that we attempt to find an
activity to suit all tastes, and although I will be
seeking out many students to
ask them their views I would
openly welcome any of them to
come and find me and make a
request. Hopefully any student
who has already attended a
club has found it an enjoyable
and rewarding experience, and
to those who have yet to do
so, take a look at the timetable
and give it a go!
Mr Boniface
EXCITING NEWS
We have found out that through the
Get Set network, the St Leonards
Academy has secured an allocation of
free tickets to the 2012 Olympics. At
the moment we don’t know how many
tickets or what events we can attend.
We want your ideas about how we can
consider allocating these tickets. Year 7
students are going to make suggestions
but we would love your ideas.
Please email your ideas to
THE ST LEONARDS ACADEMY
READING FOR PLEASURE
IMPROVING READING
During Term 1, Year 7 pupils have been taking
on-line assessments to measure their reading,
comprehension and higher order thinking skills
using the Accelerated Reader (AR) programme.
The assessments give an initial guide in the form
of a Book Level (BL) enabling pupils to choose
books from a selection matching these levels.
By reading at their given level, they are assured of
being able to complete the book yet still have the
challenge of learning new words along the way.
Once read, the pupil takes an on-line quiz based
on the book.
Readers are monitored and encouraged to read for
at least 20 minutes each day, independently, with a
partner or read to by a family member.
Pupils may also select AR books from the school
library by viewing them on-line at
www.arbookfind.co.uk using Key code:
IJ234190 to view titles stocked by the Darwell
Campus Learning Resource Centre.
The programme is aimed at encouraging children
to read for pleasure by incorporating fun quizzes
using ICT.
In Term 2 further incentives will be introduced for
effort and achievement.
CREATIVITY: DA VINCI
"I have been impressed with the urgency of doing.
Knowing is not enough; we must apply. Being willing is
not enough; we must do." Leonardo da Vinci
WELCOME TO CREATIVITY
Firstly, I would like to take this opportunity in
thanking parents and students who attended our
‘Meet the Tutor Evening’ - it was a very worthwhile
event and many parents gave us positive feedback
about the evening. Thank you!
Since our Meet the Tutor evening we have some
exciting news to share! Creativity has been
re-named as the Leonardo da Vinci School. Da Vinci
was an incredibly talented, creative innovator and
the students voted for their school to be named
after him following a series of presentations about
‘creative’ individuals. Da vinci was an Italian
Renaissance superstar. He was not only a painter
THE DA VINCI FACTOR
In Term 2 we will be on the trail of real talent by
launching our very own ‘X Factor’ competition between
the tutor groups in the da Vinci School. Tutor groups will
be able to audition for ‘The da Vinci Factor’ during tutor
time and there will be a grand final before Christmas.
The winners or winner will receive 500 vivos and a Mufti
Day for their tutor group. Staff are also welcome to
audition - the more the merrier! We will release more
information in the first week back after half term!
PARENT ‘DROP IN SURGERY’
Monday 7 November from 3.30pm - 4.15pm. Venue: The
Learning Resource Centre, Darwell Campus.
If you have any questions or would like to work in
partnership with the Da Vinci Team on future events, join
us for refreshments and discussion. There will be several
staff available. We look forward to meeting with you.
QUIZ WINNERS: TERM 1
This Term, we held an Inter-Form General Knowledge
Weekly Quiz covering a variety of topics: Entertainment,
Music, Sport, Maths. This term’s quiz winners are Miss
Lamb, Cr3 and Mrs Aldridge, Cr4, received sweets for
their Tutor Groups to share and a mufti-day on
but a sculptor, mathematician, musician, architect,
writer and much more. His most famous work and
most well-known is probably the Mona Lisa.
However, he was a very talented man with a real
sense of drive and determination. We want this to
be reflected in the ethos of the da Vinci School - we
want students to be active in their learning and
celebrate their talents and achievements. We are
100% committed to developing the potential of all
our learners and with the vast array of talent in the
da Vinci School we hope that every student will not
only contribute to their own personal success but
also to that of the Academy as a whole.
DISCOVERY: DARWIN
Welcome to the first ever Darwin School page, the place to see and
be seen for everything newsworthy from what we are sure will be
the best school in the Academy. It's down to you to make it happen!
STARTING OUT WITH SUCCESS! COMPETITION
So here we are, six weeks into the brand new year at
the brand new academy in our brand new school, and
it has surely been a voyage of Discovery for all of us.
Students and teachers alike have been travelling back
and forth between the campuses, meeting and
working with new people in new environments and
getting on as they get to know each other. With 300
of you all directly under my jurisdiction I haven't
managed to get to know you all yet, but I'm working
on it. Eight students can feel rightly proud to have
come to my attention already, however, as they are
our Students of the Week.
If you want to be considered for ‘Student of the Week’
then please let your tutor know what you have been up to
either in or out of school and you could be nominated.
FOCUS ON ACHIEVEMENTS
The majority of you have also made a really good
start with ‘Darwin School’, as we are now called,
starting the year top in both the Behaviour and Vivo
stakes of all the mixed age schools. We only have
the Year 7s to beat now and I reckon we can do it if
we really try!
One of my key focuses next term, though, is going
to be the achievement of every single Darwin
student and, to this end, I will be making regular
the st leonards academy
How many of you recognise the famous series of
pictures showing how man evolved from apes?
Well I think it would be absolutely fantastic if we
could extend this image back further and further
into the past, right the way down the evolutionary
line of man, back towards the very birth of life
itself. So the beginning picture would be some
single celled organism and we would journey up
from invertebrates to vertebrates, from water to
land right the way up to those final four pictures.
Furthermore once the new academy is completed
I would love to see this extended evolutionary
timeline decorating the corridor walls of the
Darwin School area. This is a massive project and
I'm not sure it could be completed individually
unless you had a lot of spare time! However, I
believe if you got together in teams and worked
on sections of the timeline, then between us as a
school we could find images to complete that
evolutionary journey that spans millions of years.
I will put up vivos for anyone who can complete a
sequence of five to 10 animals, named and with
pictures and dates, that we can then start
building into our monster completed timeline.
weekly tours of lessons to give you the chance to
show off to me the work you are doing. If I enter a
classroom I want to be inundated with Discovery
students desperate to show me work they have
completed to their highest ability and if you show
me something worthy you can guarantee I'll find
some vivomiles to send your way.
Simon Page Es12: I am based at the Edinburgh
Campus. Over the last few weeks I have involved
myself in many activities. I was proud and happy to
be chosen to be a buddy to a new student starting
here. My job was to make them feel welcome and to
show them around the campus, making sure that they
knew where to go for lessons and at breaktimes. I
also volunteered to help out at the Parents’ Evening,
showing people around a bunker from World War I,
which we had reconstructed in a classroom! For my
help my Tutor nominated me as Student of The Week.
I received a certificate and some Vivomiles for being
nominated.
I have really enjoyed the first few weeks of the term
and I hope that it will stay as good for me over the
rest of my time as a student here.
Kaith Domingo Es11: I have been at the Edinburgh
Campus of The St Leonards Academy for over four
years, since the beginning of Year 7. I am currently in
Year 11. There have been clear, positive changes
throughout the years which has made learning much
better for us. Recently I was put forward to be an
Academy Leader which has given me the opportunity
to show the confidence, skills and leadership I’ve
achieved throughout my time here. Knowing that I
get to be involved in school life makes me so proud as
I know that I can help students become aware of any
changes and air students’ views in return. As
Academy Leaders, we assure you that our leadership
will represent good company, positive attitudes
towards education and equality amongst students.
Sky Lee-Ryan Es16: I have been nominated by two
members of staff to become one of the first ever St
Leonards Academy Leaders. Becoming a student
leader has opened up a variety of opportunities for not
just me but for you too. You now have the
opportunity to come forward with any ideas that will
increase your enjoyment in school. I am proud as an
Academy Leader to be able to make positive
developments to the school and pleased with the
knowledge that it will be even better for you after I
leave.
I can assure you that we will all be helpful, friendly
and supportive of your contributions. Your ideas will
help improve and develop the school positively for you
and your learning environment.

GLOBALITY: CHURCHILL
A New Chapter: In what is now part of a famous speech by Winston
Churchill in the House of Commons in May 1940, he instructed Britain:
"Come then, let us go forward together with our united strength."
AND ON THAT NOTE...
We believe unity and collaboration to be as
important now as it was 71 years ago and so
we have been working hard to establish
partnerships within our school so that all of us -
the learners, parents and staff - can work
together for the common purpose.
We also started this academic year in a positive
way owing to that many of our learners
returned having achieved excellent GCSE grades
in subjects studied last year. A large majority of
these same students excelled their target
grades in their option subjects - congratulations!
Oliver Cook
Pollyanna Riggs
YEAR 11
Laura Waller Tom Bowen
Ben Holmes Kathryn Dance
It is an important year for all of our learners,
but especially those in Year 11 for whom this is
their last academic year. In acknowledgment of
this, we have started arranging interviews with
Year 11 individuals during Tutor time. Such
discussions are intended to encourage reflection
and focus upon attainment and progress. We
look forward to meeting with them all.
VIVO MILES!
the st leonards academy
A LEARNER'S PERSPECTIVE
Always invaluable is a learner's view of how the new
Academy is doing and thanks go to Joshua Stimson, an
Edinburgh Campus-based learner and his honesty in a
recent discussion.
Josh believes the Academy has a number of strengths
but that there are certain areas that still need
addressing.
After having reservations about the new Academy, like
many others, he believes that "the experience is better
than you thought it would be". He told us that he and
other learners at first found it difficult adapting to the
need to move sites and having the core subjects
timetabled on the same days. This is an area he feels
could be managed more effectively in future. Josh
enjoys his option subjects in Art and Music, in part
owing to the contrast they offer to the
core subjects, but mostly because they
offer opportunities for creativity and
expression. His most recent art project,
based on pop art on an abstract theme,
has allowed him to do just that.
Thank you Josh for your contribution
and we look forward to hearing your
views in the future.
Joshua Stimson
The Vivo Miles Reward system has been well received
but we need more rewards being issued!
We are currently third in the schools being awarded
points - this must change!
WHY HAVE A SCHOOL NURSE?
Good health has a positive impact on a child or young person's
enjoyment both at school and home. Ill health can often be a barrier
to learning and School Nurses can act as an effective bridge between
education, health services and social care, supporting work on health
issues in school and making health services more accessible to pupils,
parents, carers and school staff. Working together we can contribute
to the outcomes for children and young people and support them to:
 Be healthy
 Stay safe
 Enjoy and achieve
 Make a positive contribution
 Achieve economic well-being
School nurses also work in partnership with the schools developing
Healthy School Status and Extended School Services.
The School Nursing service includes drop-ins and access to basic
sexual health services for parents, staff and pupils at both the Darwell
