No. 2 Summer 2012

Editorial ContEnts

Dear Readers,

The wait was finally over on 5 May when the new Interlaken

Youth Hostel celebrated its opening. In an exemplary partnership

with Jungfrau Raiffeisenbank we created a building with

a unique character. The building was the first Youth Hostel and

one of the first banks to be erected using the MINERGIE-P-ECO

construction method. In another cooperation agreement with

Jungfrau Railways the new offer is also meaningfully integrated

in the region in terms of tourism and the local economy.

Swiss Youth Hostels are also launching a new restaurant concept

called “3a” which will be developed further in future at

other selected destinations. The “3a” concept is based on the

principles of Swiss Youth Hostels: simplicity, fair prices, sustainability

and international flair. It is available to Youth Hostels’

guests and the general public seven days a week. To mark

the launch, we and Jungfrau Railways have jointly created a

surprise package. You can find details of this on Page 9.

Our wardens have prepared special offers for you on water in

good time for summer. Relax and enjoy restful summer days.

We look forward to welcoming you soon in Interlaken or at one

of our other 52 Youth Hostels in Switzerland.

Outside the mountain peaks sparkle while inside the facilities

are, so to speak, 5 star! As soon as guests arrive, the first priority

is to forget everyday life and relax in the spaciously appointed

lounge. While other guests in the lounge enjoy a game of pool,

read their e-mails using the free WiFi or exchange information

about hikes, bike tours or the excursion to the world-famous

Jungfraujoch, newcomers stare at mountains in astonishment

and admire them through the large glass facade. They have actually

landed here in a top modern Youth Hostel in the centre

of the alpine universe. The monolithic building symbolises the

force of this mountainous region: massive, anchored, timeless,

permanent and reliable.

Dreaming and feasting

Even later people are still amazed. If they have actually recovered

from the first surprise, the second quickly follows. The

rooms in the new Youth Hostel are spaciously designed. The

2-bed, 4-bed and 6-bed rooms all contain parquet floors while

some of them have a balcony with fantastic views of the mountains

and for relaxation. 60 rooms containing a total of 220 beds

are available, one as comfortable as the next. Many guests rub

their eyes in astonishment and want to stay for ever. But the

discerning guest first needs strengthening. The services offered

by the new Youth Hostel also cater for every desire in

this area. Guests can eat à la carte in the public “3a” restaurant.

Guests who have booked half board can enjoy a different

daily menu or choose from the regular menu. Warm and cold

snacks are available continuously from 7 a.m. to midnight, the

ice cream parlour fulfils ice cream dreams while the lounge and

bar create a real holiday atmosphere.

Welcome to the “3a restaurant/bar/lounge”

“Swiss Youth Hostels really gave this some thought”, will one

or two people think. The “3a restaurant/bar/lounge” is open for

Youth Hostel guests and the general public seven days a week

from 7 a.m. to midnight. The food is international: the menu

contains dishes such as green Thai curry, minced meat with

macaroni and penne arrabiata.

Guests can watch their food being cooked and make comments.

That’s because the dishes are prepared in front of guests

at wok stations; guests can make their own extra requests and

have the meal prepared according to their taste. Salad is served

with every main course and guests can truly feast. The in-house

ice cream parlour will certainly leave nobody cold. Well-being

is also the maxim here. In addition to wood, concrete and steel,

natural colour tones impart a feeling of cosiness and warmth.

This is a perfect way to finish the evening in the atmospheric

bar or on the covered terrace in summer.

With “3a” Swiss Youth Hostels are launching a new concept

and a new brand. If successful, the concept will also be implemented

at other locations.

Strong networking with local partners

In 2009 Swiss Youth Hostels began looking for a solution to

Bönigen Youth Hostel which needed renovating. They learnt

that Raiffeisenbank was planning a building at Interlaken railway

station. But the bank itself only wanted to use a third of

the building. The partnership came about in spring 2010. Swiss

Youth Hostels and the regional bank, which has branches all

over Switzerland, jointly invested CHF 27 million in a future-

oriented sustainable project. Both firms thus gave a clear commitment

to Interlaken as a place for business. The building is

centrally located next door to Interlaken Ost station – reachable

from Hamburg without changing trains. On the rail side there is

a view of the Aare and the shipping piers, and at the front a view

of the English park. In front of the building the pedestrian avenue

lined with plane trees is ideal for a stroll. A short distance

from the Youth Hostel Jungfrau Railways are ready to transport

guests up to lofty heights. The already existing partnership

with this main driving-force behind tourism and the economy in

the region, Jungfrau Railways and BOB, showed that available

synergies are also being intensified.

Sustainable and integrated in the region

Swiss Youth Hostels and Raiffeisenbank Jungfrau found in each

other two equal partners who share the same values. Both companies

attach great importance to well-designed, functional,

sustainable and aesthetic construction methods. Sustainable

business operations are important to the bank. It therefore

traditionally handles resources very carefully. These values are

also important to Swiss Youth Hostels. Environmentally-friendly

tourism has top priority and the associated environmental efforts

must be sustainable, efficient and demonstrable. The

implemented Minergie-P-ECO Standard satisfies the best possible

quality label in terms of comfort, energy efficiency and

ecology. The new building is the first Youth Hostel and one of

the first banks to be built in Switzerland using this construction

To mark the opening of the new Interlaken Youth Hostel,

Swiss Youth Hostels and Jungfrau Railways have a special offer

as a surprise. You can find it on Page 9.

renovation of pontresina Youth hostel

Reopening of Pontresina Youth Hostel

on 23 June 2012.

Pontresina Youth Hostel, which was built in

1979, will be partially renovated from the

start of April to June 2012 and will remain

closed during this period. This partial renovation

will make the Youth Hostel fit for the next

ten years. Pontresina Town Council and the

Swiss Foundation for Social Tourism have also

signed a new ten-year rental agreement which

stipulates that Swiss Youth Hostels will pay

CHF 900,000 for the urgently needed partial

renovation and the future costs of maintaining

the Youth Hostel. The Town Council will in turn

reduce the rent.

Both Pontresina Town Council and Swiss

Youth Hostels have long recognised the need

to renovate Pontresina Youth Hostel. As part

of a preliminary project, the Swiss Foundation

for Social Tourism evaluated the Youth Hostel

in its capacity as the tenant. An extensive refurbishment

costs around CHF 3 million. Since

the Town Council does not have the funds for

this renovations it had terminated the previous

rental agreement with effect from 30 June

Joint solution found

During the last few months the Town Council

and Swiss Youth Hostels looked to see how a

Youth Hostel could be retained in Pontresina.

They came up with the following solution:

the Swiss Foundation for Social Tourism pays

the costs of partial renovation amounting to

CHF 900,000 and the future maintenance

costs. The Town Council reduces the rent. Pontresina

Town Council and Swiss Youth Hostels

also sign a new 10-year rental agreement. This

leaves time to find a long-term solution which

is feasible for all sides. The purchase of the

Youth Hostel by the Swiss Foundation for So-

cial Tourism for an extension or a new building

is being examined. A feasibility study will start

next year in this respect.

Thanks to the partial renovation, the Youth

Hostel can be adapted to guests’ current

needs. All showers will be refurbished as part

of this renovation. A lounge will be created in

the rest area on the second floor. Two additional

guest rooms will be constructed in the

current laundry room on the third floor.

5 out of the current number of 13 6-bed

rooms will be turned into 4-bed rooms. The

public restaurant, which belongs to the Youth

Hostel, will be refurbished with new lights. The

current heating system will be replaced. After

the renovation, the Youth Hostel will have a total

of 131 beds.

Finnish hostel of the Year for 2012 in lapland

The Finnish Youth Hostel Association SRM

(Hostelling International Finland) has chosen

Visatupa Hostel as Hostel of the Year in 2012.

The Hostel is located in the village of Raudanjoki

in the southern part of the Lappish municipality

of Sodankylä. Visatupa, which is actually

a dairy farm, has played host to guests for

over 30 years.

“Since most of the hostels are situated in

cities and tourist centres, it is great that the

SRM network also contains these rural hostels”,

said SRM General Secretary Ari J. Aalto.

SRM said that the reasons why Visatupa was

chosen as Hostel of the Year were the longterm

use of the hostel to promote rural tourism

in Lapland, the local activities to further

develop the industry and the wide range of

services which are supported by a network of

local companies. The hostel is constantly visited

by numerous regular guests from Central

Europe and even from Japan. This proves that

the hostel can offer its guests unforgettable

Original Finland

Visatupa is a family-run enterprise managed

by Janne Sammalkangas. The third generation

of the Sammalkangas family is now living on

the site; it currently comprises Janne, his wife,

their two small children and Janne’s parents

who ran the hostel in the past. The generation

change took place some years ago when Vilho

and Milka Sammalkangas, the founders of the

hostel, handed over the company’s reins to

their son Janne.

Guests at Visatupa can experience and

enjoy Finland from its best sides. The countryside

in Lapland offers many experiences, but

one aspect which guests always like emphasising

is the good food at Visatupa. Janne calls

it “home cooking”, but reindeer meat, roast elk

or salmon and home-made cheese are even

extremely exotic for Finnish tastes. For guests

from Japan and Korea merely picking berries in

the forest is an unforgettable experience.

Holiday on the Lappish farm

Guests at Visatupa have always praised the

quiet, cosy atmosphere, the proximity to nature

and the tasty food. However, the most important

things for many of these guests were

the pleasant welcome and the warm informal

hospitality of the Sammalkangas family.

Visatupa Hostel in the municipality of

Sodankyläist has been specialising in farm

holidays since 1980. It has 55 beds in rooms

accommodating 2 to 4 persons and in terraced

apartments for 4 to 6 persons. Individual travellers

can also naturally hire a bed in a room

for several persons.

top of Europe and

a charming Youth hostel

It’s really steep uphill from

mid-September to the end of October.

You stay at the new Inter-

laken Youth Hostel and climb up

Jungfraujoch on the queen of

Alpine railways.

The view from Jungfraujoch, the roof of Europe,

is absolutely fantastic. A world of rock, ice and

snow, a monumental glacier world, opens up

in front of visitors. Directly at your feet is the

22-kilometre-long Aletsch Glacier, the longest

ice flow in Europe and a UNESCO World Heritage

Site in the Alps. It doesn’t matter which

way you turn, mountain peaks gleam all around

The Jungfrau Railway, a pioneering work

among mountain railways, opened in 1912. It

is a cog railway which runs from Kleine Scheidegg

up to Jungfraujoch, the highest station

in Europe. It ascends a height of 1,400 metres

and even crosses the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau.

At the top, at an altitude of 3,535 metres,

you are one step closer to heaven. From the

glazed Sphinx observation hall or from the terrace

running around the building you can admire

this unique Alpine wonder.

Twenty metres below the observation platform

you enter a fairy-tale world in Firmein

through a blue revolving door. Cavernous long

passages widen out into rooms and halls. Blue

gleaming ice sculptures appear in niches.

Around 50 years ago, two mountain guides from

Grindelwald and Wengen started to cut a huge

hall with an area of more than 1,000 square

metres from the glacier ice. Working manu-

ally with ice picks and saws in a cold and dark

environment, they produced one of the hallmarks

of the Jungfraujoch, i.e. the Ice Palace.

Adolf Guyer-Zeller, who built the Jungfrau

Railway, only received the licence subject to

him proving that a railway would not cause any

health problems for the construction workers

or later passengers at such great heights. He

therefore started an expedition from Zermatt

to Breithorn at 3 a.m. on 15 September 1894.

Seven test persons aged between 10 and 70

were each carried up to the 3,750-metre-high

plateau by six to eight porters. Since the evaluation

of the test did not reveal any unfavourable

results, the proof was deemed to have

been provided.

Protected viewing terrace of the Sphinx

Research Institute, 3454 m high.

Star-like accommodation

While astronomers look at stars in the observatory

on Jungfraujoch, guests in Interlaken

enjoy the new star in the Youth Hostel world.

However, the new Youth Hostel not only makes

stargazers dream, it also amazes many guests.

People meet in the spaciously appointed

lounge to chat, play pool or check their e-mails

with the free WiFi. They can also enjoy heavenly

food in the in-house “3a” restaurant before

they finally start to dream about majestic

peaks in soft beds.
