Class of 1962 50th Reunion

Mary Pamela Underhill ‘64
Named Scholarship
The Mary Pamela Underhill ‘64 Scholarship Fund was established in 2012 by Pam’s sister, Mary Catherine
Underhill Fitzpatrick ‘67, her family, friends and classmates. With this scholarship their plan is to provide
financial relief to a deserving freshman whose dreams of attending St. Joe might otherwise be out of
reach. St. Joe is so grateful that Pam Underhill’s family has chosen to begin a scholarship to honor and
remember her.
Earlier this year, Pam’s sister, Catherine Underhill Fitzpatrick ‘67 contacted Theresa Klein, the Director
of Alumnae Relations, to find out more information about our Named Scholarships. She had read the
President’s Letter in Wings and was moved by something SJA President Anita Reznicek wrote. It read,
“alums of girls’ schools have historically given in far fewer numbers and smaller amounts compared to
alums from boys’ schools.” The letter also challenged St. Joe Alumnae to defy that stereotype and support
future Angels and the future of St. Joseph’s Academy. The message resonated with Catherine and she, in
turn, decided that this would be a beautiful way to honor her sister and keep her memory alive.
After receiving more information on the option of a Named Scholarship at SJA, Catherine then reached
out to her family, friends and Pam’s classmates through a letter and asked that they consider giving to
the Mary Pamela Underhill ’64 Scholarship. The response was overwhelming! And we shouldn’t have
been surprised. While working with Catherine Underhill Fitzpatrick on getting this scholarship started,
we found out just how incredible she was. Pam passed away in 2009 and her sister Catherine said, “Pam’s
years at St. Joe were among the happiest of her life, years that formed a solid base for her successful
career, her abiding faith, and her deep and lasting friendships with classmates from SJA.” While the
original goal was to raise $1,000, the scholarship fund has already raised close to $16,000. This incredible
generosity shown by Pam’s loved ones will make a huge
difference in the life of the current freshman at SJA who
has received the scholarship this year. The family has
chosen to give a partial scholarship to a student every
year in honor of Pam Underhill ‘64 and it will, no doubt,
have an incredible impact on the young women who will
receive a scholarship in the future.
Thank you to everyone who has participated in funding
the Mary Pamela Underhill ‘64 Scholarship Fund, the SJA
community is forever grateful.
IN MEMORIAM 13
Dear Alumnae,
We are well into our 172nd year of
educating the outstanding young
women of St. Louis. There’s a lot of
wonderful energy when 600 young
women gather every day in pursuit
of academic excellence, led by a
scholarly faculty and supported by
our caring staff. This year we are
drawing students from 53 zip codes and 2 states. We are proud to be a
recognized as a magnet of opportunities for young women.
As some of you may know, Sr. Pat Dunphy, csj will be retiring as Principal
of SJA in June of 2013. Sr. Pat has enjoyed an exemplary career as an
educator and administrator spanning 48 years, serving throughout the
Midwest. We are honored that she has chosen to complete her service
here at St. Joe.
In other news, we have a new phone system and that means we have
new phone numbers. The great news is you can call support staff
directly, like the Alumnae Office (314-394-4343), Community Relations
(314-394-4344) and the Auction (314-394-4888).
We are asking for your help as we “Go Green-er”! We are already
proud of our St. Joe green, but now we are trying to save money and
resources by reducing our paper mailings and postage, and by being
responsible stewards and recycling. All of these efforts help us to put
the maximum of our resources into educating our current Angels.
You can help by allowing us to communicate with you electronically.
So please contact us with your latest email address. Send any updated
contact information to Theresa Klein, SJA Alumnae Director, at
tklein@stjosephacademy.org.
We deeply appreciate your support of St. Joseph’s Academy,
young women and welcome them to SJA.
Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor
Dreamcoat Returns to SJA
The St. Joe community has taken on
a popular and familiar musical again
this year, Joseph and the Amazing
Technicolor Dreamcoat ran from
October 25 – 27 and was once
again a huge hit! Directed by the
talented Eugene Pierce, St. Joe had
its own spin on this familiar musical
by casting St. Joe students as the
brothers. The students who were
cast as the brothers were thrilled to
take on the challenge! Be sure to
check out any of the St. Joe theatre
productions; we have no doubt you
will enjoy every minute!
Locks of Love – Record Breaking
Year at St. Joe!
This year during Welcome Week at SJA the new school year
started off with a record-breaking good cause! 144 St. Joe
students donated their hair to Pro-V Beautiful Lengths and Locks
of Love Organizations to support those diagnosed with cancer
who lose their hair. It was a
beautiful sight to see so many
Angels give of themselves
to help those in need. These
students are truly making a
profound impact in the world
in yet another selfless way.
We love our Angels!
SJA Tennis Team – State Champions!
Congratulations to the St. Joe Tennis Team who brought home
the Missouri State Title this semester. It was a grueling season,
but in the end the tennis team beat Rock Bridge High School
for the State Champion title. We are so proud of our Angels!
Angel Outreach Celebrates 7 Years
Angel Outreach, one of many clubs at SJA, lives the motto “Not
I, But We” and they truly “Serve the Dear Neighbor without
Distinction.” This year they are celebrating 7 years of service! In
2006 St. Joe teacher Jane Garvin started the club to help serve
the dear neighbor in St. Louis. There are so many different
opportunities for the girls to get involved. Every month the
St. Joe students and families make food and bring it to Sts.
Peter and Paul Church in downtown St. Louis and serve the
homeless. It is called “St. Joe Serves on the Second” and it
is incredible to see how many people offer their time to help
this worthy cause. Many students also volunteer their time at
Shriner’s Hospital, next door to SJA, to spend time with children
who are struggling with their health. There is an opportunity
for everyone in the St. Joe community to get involved and
help someone else. It is a beautiful program that we hope to
continue for years to come!
Maureen McVey makes
Soccer History in St. Louis!
This September Maureen McVey, St. Joe Soccer coach for the
past 18 years, made history by being the first woman to be
inducted into the St. Louis Soccer Hall of Fame. Maureen has
coached four St. Joe teams to State Championships in her
career at SJA and no doubt has her eye on many more in the
future. Congratulations, McVey, we are so grateful for your
dedication to SJA!
St. Louis
Business Journal’s
Most Influential
Business Women
The trend of St. Joseph’s Academy Alumnae being
honored by the St. Louis Business Journal continued
this year with the honor going to Annie Castellano
’94! We are so proud to count Annie as one of the
many Values-Driven Women Leaders that are part of
the St. Joe community.
On August 10, 2012 Annie was honored as one
of twenty-five of the STL Business Journal’s Most
Influential Business Women for her work as Chief
Creative Officer at Switch: Liberate Your Brand. St.
Joseph’s Academy President, Anita Reznicek, six
SJA students and past honoree, Helen Antoine ’81
attended the luncheon at the America’s Center –
downtown. It was a great opportunity to not only
support Annie, but also an opportunity for our students
to interact with successful, women business
leaders in the community.
The students networked throughout the room and
made connections that have even lead to internship
opportunities!
Congratulations again Annie, we are so proud to
have you as one of our Angels!
Spotlight
Kerri Morgan ‘92
Kerri Morgan graduated from St. Joseph’s
Academy in 1992 and throughout her
time at SJA and certainly since leaving
the Academy Kerri Morgan has made
an indelible mark on the world! She is
an incredibly inspiring person and we
recently had the opportunity to speak with
Kerri about her life and her most recent
accomplishment of winning two bronze
medals at the 2012 London Paralympics.
When speaking with Kerri you can
immediately tell that she is humble about her accomplishments,
yet is extremely driven in every area of her life.
After graduating from St. Joe, Kerri went to Texas Christian
University and studied Psychology. She then returned to
St. Louis and pursued a M.A.S. in Occupational Therapy at
Washington University. Kerri found another home at Wash U.
and is currently working there in a dual capacity of research and
teaching. She is also pursuing her Ph.D.
While she was in her mid-20s, Kerri was introduced to
wheelchair sports and began to compete in wheelchair rugby
on an international level. She was the first and only female
wheelchair rugby player on the USA team. Kerri eventually
realized that to compete at an international level, her size was
really obstructing her ability to compete with the other players.
But, while playing rugby Kerri was cross-training on the track
with a racing wheelchair and her coach pushed her to train to
compete in the Beijing Paralympics. She worked hard, but felt
that she was a little “rough around the edges”, placing 5th in
her events. Kerri decided to then train for the 2012 London
Paralympics where she felt she was a more seasoned competitor
in the games. To prepare for the 2012 games, Kerri trained for
her events six days a week, twice a day! She was extremely
focused and explained to us that she had to be organized and
scheduled in every aspect of her life to be able to train at this
level while still working at Washington University in St. Louis.
We asked Kerri a few more questions about her experience,
her perspective of winning two bronze medals as well as a little
more about her work in Occupational Therapy.
What kept you inspired to train hard enough and
make it to the 2012 London Paralympics and win
two Bronze medals?
I am a competitor. When I commit myself to something I only
know how to do it one way and that means giving all of me,
110%. The competition itself kept me inspired; my coach,
family, friends and support system kept me going through all
my training.
Tell us about the 2012 London Paralympics.
What was it like to be a part of history?
The 2012 London Paralympic Games were an awesome
experience. For both of my races I competed in a sold out
Olympic Stadium. Each night there were over 80,000 people in
the stands. After I won each medal I had hundreds of people
from the general public approach me asking for autographs
and to pose for photos.
What were you thinking and feeling when you
realized that you had won a Bronze Medal?
To this day it is still hard for me to actually believe I won two
medals. I think the moment that it became real was after the
medal ceremony when I found my friends and family and was
able to share the medal with them.
Can you tell us about your work at Washington
University? Occupational Therapy is such an interesting
field; we would love to hear more about what you do!
I received a Masters degree in occupational therapy. I am
currently on Faculty in the Program in Occupational Therapy at
Washington University. I am also pursuing my Ph.D in Movement
Science. My job responsibilities involve research and teaching.
Occupational therapy is a diverse field that has opportunities in
many different settings. What drew me to the field was the idea
of being able to positively impact others. To me occupational
therapy is the ability to assist people with different abilities or
disabilities participate in whatever is important in their lives.
My experience with this is helping people be more independent
by providing them technology to assist them. For example, if
someone is no longer able to use their legs but would like to
drive a vehicle, hand controls can be installed in their vehicle so
they can drive with their hands.
Tell us about your experience at St. Joe, how did it
prepare you for what you do now both professionally
and for the Paralympics?
My experience at St. Joe prepared me academically,
professionally and physically. St. Joe prepared me academically
to go away to college for my undergraduate degree followed
by a graduate degree. I also was a part of the swim team at St.
Joe. Although I was not competitive on the swim team due to
my disability this experience helped me to stay active, healthy
and meet friends, but it also helped me realize that I wanted to
be competitive. It also provided me my first experience of being
part of a team and what that means. These are all things that
have helped me later in life.
Class of 1962 50th Reunion
The Class of 1962 celebrated its 50th Reunion with a three day
extravaganza this past May. It was a great event and classmates
from near and far gathered to reminisce on their time at St. Joe and
what they have been up to since graduating. The 50th Reunion
Weekend kicked off on Thursday, May 24, 2012 where the Class
of 1962 acted as the honor guard for the graduating class of
2012! It is always an amazing experience to watch the Honor
Guard Ceremony and see how close the bond of St. Joseph’s
Academy stays strong for many years after leaving the halls of
SJA. Following the honor guard ceremony, the Class of 1962
gathered in the Sr. Mary de Paul room for dinner, drinks and a
stroll down memory lane! They enjoyed looking through items
on a “memory table” and especially perusing the Memory Book.
A special thank you to Penny Holecek Rocco, her husband Don
and the planning committee for creating such a special book!
Then on Friday, the Class of 1962 took a day trip to the beautiful
Wine Country Gardens in Defiance, MO. The planning committee
put together a wonderful event with good food, good wine and of
course good friends. That evening Joyce Koch Krekeler graciously
opened her home to her classmates for more socializing and fun,
everyone had a fantastic time!
Finally, on Saturday, May 26, the ladies were honored at the
Alumnae Mass and Brunch for celebrating their 50th Reunion.
They participated in brunch and in honoring the 2012 Distinguished
Alumnae, Sr. Mary Laurent Duggan ’37 and Erin Hopmann ’99.
We would like to extend a special thank you to the Class of 1962
Reunion Planning Committee. Their hard work and dedication
helped make such a memorable and beautiful reunion possible!
Alumnae
Mass & Brunch
Saturday, May 26, 2012
On Saturday, May 26, 2012, all
SJA Alumnae were invited to
the annual Alum Mass & Brunch
where we honor and celebrate
our Distinguished Alumnae and
the 50th Reunion class for that
year. That morning everyone
gathered in the SJA chapel at
10 a.m. Fr. Oscar Vasquez, S.M.,
was the celebrant at Mass and
he spoke to the importance of
Alumnae and the bond that
they share through St. Joseph’s
Academy. St. Joe is something
different and special to the 7,000 living alumnae and they are
proud of this amazing 172 year history!
After Mass concluded, everyone moved downstairs to the
Sr. Mary de Paul room for brunch and the Distinguished
Alumnae Award Ceremony. Anita Reznicek, President of
St. Joseph’s Academy, opened the ceremony with a prayer
and an update on what has been happening at the
school during the 2011-2012 school year.
Once everyone was seated and had time to enjoy brunch,
the award ceremony got underway. Sr. Pat Dunphy,
CSJ, Principal of St. Joseph’s Academy, introduced the
first recipient, Sr. Mary Laurent Duggan, CSJ ’37 who
received the “Excellence in Leadership” Award. After Sr. Mary
Laurent graciously accepted her award and told the guests
a little bit more about her life story, Anita introduced Emily
Mahon ’99 to speak about the next honoree, Erin Hopmann
’99, who received the “Pioneering Spirit” award. Erin spoke
about her accomplishments in the entrepreneurial world and
both honorees credited St. Joe and their families for their
successes. (Read more about the award winners on Pg. 7)
Thank you to everyone who participated in the Alum Mass &
Brunch this year; we truly enjoy seeing you at all of our Alumnae
events throughout the year!
The 2012 Distinguished Alumnae Recipients
On May 26, 2012, St. Joseph’s Academy was honored to present two of our Alumnae with the SJA
Distinguished Alumnae Awards, “Excellence in Leadership” and Pioneering Spirit.” This has become a yearly
tradition where we are able to take time out of our busy schedules to honor alumnae who are making a profound
impact in the world. While there are so many Angels to choose from, we found that the 2012 honorees were
incredibly deserving of this award. Sr. Mary Laurent Duggan, CSJ ’37 and Erin Hopmann ’99 have contributed
to their fields in very different ways, but both have made a special mark. Here is just a portion of what these
two values-driven women leaders have accomplished in their lives and we hope that you enjoy their stories
as much as we did. Congratulations Sr. Mary Laurent and Erin, we are honored to call you both Angels!
Sr. Mary Laurent Duggan,
CSJ ‘37
Sr. Mary Laurent Duggan graduated
from St. Joe 75 years ago and her
accomplishments while at the Academy
and following are impressive to say
the least. The world, in so many ways,
became her oyster. Sr. Mary Laurent is
the first to say that she is amazed at the
path that life and God took her. Her story is inspiring and we are
honored to share it with you today.
While studying at St. Joseph’s Academy Sr. Mary Laurent was
an accomplished pianist, beginning her study of the piano in
second grade. At the end of her sophomore year it was decided
that she would end her piano studies with a solo recital. God had
a different plan. She ended up receiving a full piano scholarship,
graduated from St. Joe and began studying at Fontbonne
University. She graduated from Fontbonne with a B.A., a major
in Latin and a minor in French and Mathematics. She later was
awarded a Bachelor of Music after earning enough credits.
Then, in September 1941, she entered the Sisters of St. Joseph
of Carondelet and began her teaching career.
Sr. Mary Laurent taught at schools all over the country that were
sponsored by the Sisters of St. Joseph from 1944-1971. Then
a drastic change in the church and her life occurred, Vatican II.
The St. Louis Province of the Sisters of St. Joseph chose to elect its
leadership. Sr. Mary Laurent was the first-ever elected Provincial
Leader. Chosen to lead 1400 sisters! While she was Provincial
Leader, Mary Laurent had the opportunity to travel to missions
all over the country and abroad to places such as Peru, Japan and
Hawaii. This was a thrilling experience for her that she continues
to treasure to this day.
After six years as the Provincial Leader she was selected by Bishop
Raymond W. Lessard to be the Chancery Administrator for the
Diocese of Savannah, Georgia. Her administrative responsibilities
continued to grow and she was in charge of the smooth running
of the Chancery office in Savannah. Throughout all of this Sr.
Mary Laurent continued to use her musical gifts in parishes
and many other places. Retiring in 2008, Sr. Mary Laurent now
lives at Nazareth Living Center where she still provides piano
accompaniment for liturgies during the week.
Sr. Mary Laurent has been the definition of a Values-Driven
Woman Leader throughout her life and we were thrilled to
honor her with the Distinguished Alumnae Award, “Excellence
in Leadership.”
Erin Hopmann ‘99
Erin Hopmann graduated in 1999 and
ever since she has been leaving her
mark on the world in a creative and
inspiring way. Erin took the leap that so
many of us think about, from corporate
world to start-up dreams and has been
so successful doing it.
After graduating from St. Joe in 1999, Erin headed north to
Chicago to attend Northwestern University. Erin graduated from
Northwestern with a BS in Psychology. She decided to stay in
Chicago and landed a job with Leo Burnett/Arc Worldwide, a
world-renowned advertising agency. While there, she worked in
both business development and strategic planning, specializing
in retail and shopper marketing for Procter & Gamble brands.
Erin worked at Leo Burnett/Arc Worldwide for six years before
teaming up with a partner to start a small business, named
Hoply, a branding and market strategy firm that specialized in
working with small- businesses and start-ups.
Erin’s passion and vision turned into co-founding her business,
Dabble. Dabble is an online community marketplace for people
to discover, teach and host unique one-time classes for just $20.
The Dabble vision is to give anyone the opportunity to “dabble”
or try something new without the commitment of a lot of time
or money. It could be a French cooking class, learning how to
develop a website, organic gardening or a plethora of other
classes. You can sign up to take a class or even teach a class.
Erin has made her vision a reality with this company and they
are quickly expanding to different markets and St. Louis is on
that list!
Erin believes that the continuation of learning can happen
anywhere, in a coffee shop, a bookstore, a park or community
center. And that is the idea of Dabble. Erin and the co-founder
of Dabble have been hard at work for the past year getting this
company up and running and have big plans for the future and
expansion! We are excited to see where her creativity and drive
take her and Dabble.
As you can see, Erin has accomplished an incredible amount
since leaving SJA 13 years ago and we know that she is just
getting started! We were honored to present Erin with the
Distinguished Alumnae Award, “Pioneering Spirit.”
1959
In May 2012, Sue Gleeson Stein was one of
ten teachers inducted into the inaugural State
of Nebraska English Language Arts Hall of Fame.
Hereafter one teacher a year will be named.
1960
Approximately 15 years ago, the Class of 1960
started with just 3 classmates meeting the first
Wednesday of the month for dinner. In time,
the group would grow. Sometimes there are 5
people, and sometimes they have as many as 15.
The group tries to determine the next month’s
location before they depart from wherever they
have gathered. In December, they used to have
a Christmas holiday pot luck at someone’s house,
but two years ago, they met at St. Joe’s Holiday
Boutique, and last year at a restaurant. They used
to have a gift exchange, but they donate now to
a worthy cause. Two years ago, it was St. Joe’s.
Last year, Wounded Warrior Project. This coming
year, they will be donating to the USO monetarily
as well as with necessities they have requested.
The Class of 1960 classmates also gathered at
Gail Leiendecker Cammarata’s home for a 70th
Birthday pot-luck party. They have also started an
email prayer chain; requests for prayers are sent
to Carolyn Cassani Ring, who then sends out the
request to fellow classmates. They feel a lot of their
prayers have been answered because of this chain.
They so thoroughly enjoy finding new ways to get
together, and keep in touch with each other.
Speaker Series
October 5, 2012
On Friday, October 5, 2012, St. Joseph’s Academy welcomed
back three of our Alumnae to speak to the student body about
their experiences since leaving St. Joe, their career paths and
life lessons that they could pass on to this generation of Angels.
We were thrilled to have Patti Sullivan Mays ‘82, Nicole Benoist
‘93 and Lauren Ruggeri ‘02 at St. Joe to share their experiences
with our current Angels. Each speaker brought a unique
viewpoint on their careers, life and how St. Joe has impacted
their decisions.
Nicole Benoist ’93 was our first speaker of the day. She has
been in the fashion industry since graduating from college
and has worked for high-end fashion houses, wardrobed
many celebrities and started her own PR firm in California. In
2007 she returned to St. Louis and became the Style Editor for
St. Louis Magazine. Most recently she has been focusing on her
latest ventures, St. Louis’ first retail co-op, The Collective, in
downtown St. Louis along with minipinkbook.com, an online
guide for the best boutiques, restaurants, beauty services and
attractions in several cities with more to come. She shared with
the SJA students that although she loves the industry she works
in, it has taken a lot of hard work, dedication and sleepless
nights to get to where she is today. Nicole commented that
she feels like she is just now finding her true passion. She also
challenged the girls to find what they love to do in life and go
after it and to never fear starting over in your career to find your
true passion.
Patti Sullivan Mays ‘82 was the second speaker of the day and
she focused on several themes that truly resonated with our
students. After graduating from St. Joe in ‘82, Patti then went
on to attend Vanderbilt University where she graduated Summa
Cum Laude and was the Salutatorian in her class at the George
Peabody School for Teachers at Vanderbilt University, quite an
accomplishment to say the least! After Vanderbilt, Patti returned
to St. Louis where she taught in the Ladue School District and
did graduate work at Washington University. Patti then married
her husband Mark Mays and moved to San Antonio, TX where
she taught for several years and is now raising her 6 children.
In addition to all of that, Patti is an incredible philanthropist;
something that our students are extremely passionate about.
She has dedicated much of her life to charitable works for
institutions such as Alamo Heights School Foundation, Oblate
School of Theology and Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation,
St. Joseph’s Academy and countless others. Patti spoke about
the importance of family and her faith life, and specifically how
they have impacted everything in her life in such a positive
way. She also spoke about how her faith life was formed by
many teachers at SJA and how they taught her how to pray,
which is still an everyday part of her life. Patti was an inspiring
speaker and truly connected with the students through her
life experiences. Especially with Mission Week just around the
corner, she gave our Angels a lot to think about!
Our last speaker of the day was Lauren Ruggeri, Class of 2002.
After St. Joe, Lauren headed out to the west coast and attended
Chapman University in Southern California where she majored
in Film Production. After college, Lauren lived in LA and worked
in the Art Departments of major motion pictures including
Spiderman 3, Iron Man and He’s Just Not That Into You. Lauren
then decided to move to New York City and attended Parsons
The New School for Design and was trained in Graphic Design.
She currently lives and works in NYC as a Graphic Designer
specializing in web design. Her clients include Simon & Shuster,
Larabar and many more. Lauren was yet another great example
to the students for going after what you want in life. Lauren
had always dreamed of being a Film Director and she pursued
those dreams in California, but she soon realized that it was
not the path she wanted to be on for the rest of her life. That is
when Lauren decided to change directions and pursue Graphic
Design, so she returned to school and since has found a great
job doing web design, something she herself never thought
she would be doing. Her message to the students was simple;
don’t be afraid to go after your dreams, because half the fun
is the journey along the way to get to where you want to be.
All three of our speakers were wonderful examples of what
the students have to look forward to in their lives and future
careers, no matter what that may be. They have struggled,
accomplished so much and kept the values that St. Joe has
taught them through it all. They are three excellent examples
of what it means to be a St. Joseph’s Academy Values- Driven
Woman Leader! Thank you to Nicole, Patti and Lauren for
taking the time to pass along your stories to our students.
