In The Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
Hazrat Salman Farsi (R.A)
Introduction
This is the story of the pious, mystic,
Faqhi, intellectual and ascetic, Salman the
Persian. He grew up in the town of Isfahan
in Persia, in the village of Jayyan. His father
was the Dihqan (chief) of the village. He
was the richest person there and had the
biggest house. His father loved him, more
than he loved any other. As time went by,
his love for Salman became so strong and
overpowering that he feared to lose him
or have anything happen to him. So he
kept him at home, a virtual prisoner, in the
same way that young girls were kept.
Salman became devoted to the Magian
religion, so much so that he attained the
position of custodian of the fire, which
they worshipped. His duty was to see that the
flames of the fire remained burning and that it
did not go out for a single hour, day or night.
Salman’s father had a vast estate, which
yielded an abundant supply of crops. He
himself looked after the estate and gathered
harvest. One day as he went about his
duties as Dihqan of the village, he said to
Salman, ‘My son, as you see, I am too busy
to go out to the estate now. Go and look
after matters there for me today.
On the way to the estate, Salman passed a
Christian church and heard voices raised
in prayer, which attracted his attention. He
did not know anything about Christianity
or, for that matter, about the followers of
any other religion. His father had kept him
in the house away from people. When he
heard the voices of the Christians, he entered
the church to see what they were doing.
He was impressed by their manner of
praying and felt drawn to their religion. He
said, ‘This religion is better
The Month
of Rajab
By Mufti Taqi Usmani
Rajab is the seventh month in
the Islamic lunar calendar. This
month was regarded as one of
the sacred months (Al-Ashhural-hurum)
in which battles were
prohibited in the days of the Holy
Prophet . It is also a prelude
to the month of Ramadan, because
Ramadan follows it after the
intervening month of Sha’ban.
Therefore, when the Holy Prophet
sighted the moon of Rajab,
he used to pray to Allah in the
following words:
“O Allah, make the months of
Rajab and Sha’ban blessed for
us, and let us reach the month
of Ramadan (i.e. prolong our
life up to Ramadan, so that we
may benefit from its merits and
blessings).”
Yet no specific way of worship has
been prescribed by the Shari’ah
in this month. However, some
people have invented some special
rituals or practices in this month,
which are not supported by
reliable resources of the Shari’ah
or are based on some unauthentic
traditions. We would like to
explain here the correct position
about them.
1. Celebration of Lailatul
Mi’raj
It is generally believed that the
great event of Mi’raj (ascension
of the Holy Prophet to the
heavens) took place in the night
of 27th of Rajab. Therefore, some
people celebrate the night as
“Lailatul- Mi’raj” (the night of
ascension to heavens).
40440 Palmer Rd. Canton, MI-48188 Visit us online at www.mcws.org
(734) 467-7704
Indeed, the event of mi’raj was one of
the most remarkable episodes in the
life of our beloved Holy Prophet
. He was called by Almighty Allah.
He traveled from Makkah to Baitul-
Maqdis and from there he ascended
the heavens through the miraculous
power of Allah. He was honored with
a direct contact with his Creator
at a place where even the angels
had no access. This was the unique
honor conferred by Allah to the Holy
Prophet alone. It was the climax
of the spiritual progress which is
not attained by anybody except him.
No doubt the night in which he was
blessed with this unparalleled honor
was one of the greatest nights in the
history of this world.
But, Islam has its own principles
with regard to the historic and
religious events. Its approach
about observing festivals and
celebrating days and nights is totally
different from the approach of other
religions. The Holy Qur’an and the
Sunnah of the Holy Prophet
did not prescribe any festival or
any celebration to commemorate
an event from the past, however
remarkable it might have been.
Instead, Islam has prescribed two
annual celebrations only. One is
Eid-ul-Fitr and the other is Eid ul-
Adha. Both of these festivals have
been fixed at a date on which the
Muslims accomplish a great ‘ibadah
(worship) every year. Eid-ul-Fitr
has been prescribed after the fasts
of Ramadan, while Eid-ul-Adha
has been fixed when the Muslims
perform the Hajj annually. None
of these two eids is designed to
commemorate a particular event
of the past which has happened
in these dates. This approach is
indicative of the fact that the real
occasion for a happy celebration is
the day in which the celebrators
themselves have accomplished
remarkable work through their
own active effort. As (Contd. on Pg.12)

Hazrat Salman Farsi, cont’d from Pg.1
than ours. I shall not leave them until the
sunsets.’
Salman’s inclination
to Christianity
Salman asked and was told that the
Christian religion originated in Syria. He
did not go to his father’s estate that day
and at night, he returned home. His father
met him and asked where he had been.
Salman told him about his meeting with
the Christians and how he was impressed
by their religion. His father was dismayed
and said: ‘My son, their is nothing good in
that religion. Your religion and the religion
of your forefathers is better.”
‘No, their religion is better than ours,’ he insisted.
His father became upset and afraid
that Salman would leave their religion. So
he kept Salman locked up in the house and
shackled his feet. Salman managed to send
a message to the Christians, asking them
to inform him of any caravans going to
Syria. Before long they contacted him with
the information he wanted. He broke the
fetters and escaped his father’s estate to
join the caravan to Syria. When he reached
Syria, he asked regarding the leading person
in the Christian religion and was directed
to the bishop of the church. He went
up to him and said: ‘I want to become a
Christian and would like to attach myself
to your service, learn from you and pray
with you.’
The bishop agreed and Salman entered the
church in his service. Salman soon found
out, however, that the bishop was corrupt.
He would order his followers to give money
in charity while holding out the promise
of blessings to them. When they gave
the bishop anything to spend in the way of
Allah, he would hoard it for himself and
not give anything to the poor or needy. In
this way, he amassed a vast quantity of gold.
When the bishop died and the Christians
gathered to bury him, Salman told them of
his corrupt practices and, at their request,
showed them where the bishop had kept
their donations. When they saw the large
jars filled with gold and silver they said,
‘By Allah, we shall not bury him.’ They
nailed him on a cross and threw stones at
him. Salman stayed on, in the service of
the person who replaced him. The new
bishop was an ascetic who longed for the
Hereafter and engaged in worship day and
night. Salman was devoted to him and
spent much of the time in his company.
After the new bishop died, Salman attached
himself to various Christian religious figures,
in Mosul, Nisibis and elsewhere. The
last one told him that there was none left
on the earth that were following the correct
path. He also told him that the time
had arrived for the advent of a Prophet in
the land of the Arabs, who would have a
reputation for strict honesty, one who
would accept a gift but would never consume
charity (sadaqah) for himself.
Salman’s inclination to
the Arabs and Islam
A group of Arab leaders from the Kalb
tribe passed through Ammuriyah. Salman
asked them to take him with them to the
land of the Arabs, in return for whatever
money he had. They agreed to take him
along. When they reached Wadi al-Qura
(a place between Syria and Madinah), the
Arabs broke their agreement and made
him a slave, then sold Salman to a Jew.
Salman worked as a servant for him but
he eventually sold him to a nephew of his,
belonging to the tribe of Banu Qurayzah.
This nephew took Salman with him to
Yathrib, the city of palm groves, which is
how the Christian at Ammuriyah had described
it.
At that time the Prophet was inviting his
people in Makkah to Islam but Salman
did not know of this because of the harsh
duties slavery imposed upon him. When
the Prophet reached Yathrib after his hijrah
from Makkah, Salman was on top
of a palm tree doing some work. Salman’s
master was sitting under the tree. A nephew
of Salman’s master came up and said,
‘May Allah declare war on the Aws and
the Khazraj (the two main Arab tribes of
Yathrib). By Allah, they are now gathering
at Quba to meet a man, who has just today,
arrived from Makkah and who claims to
be Prophet.’
Salman felt light-headed upon hearing
these words and began to shiver so vio-
lently that he had to climb down, in fear
that he may fall. He quickly swung down
from the tree and spoke to his master’s
nephew.
‘What did you say? Repeat the news for
me.’
Salman’s master grew angry at this breach
of protocol and struck him a terrible blow.
‘What does this matter to you’? Go back to
what you were doing,’ he shouted.
That evening, Salman took some dates
that he had gathered and went to the place
where the Prophet had alighted. He went
to him and said, ‘I have heard that you are
a righteous man and that you have companions
with you who are strangers and
are in need. Here is something from me as
sadaqah. I see that you are more deserving
of it than others are.’
The Prophet ordered his companions to eat
but he himself refrained. Salman gathered
some more dates and when the Prophet
left Quba for Madinah, Salman went to
him and said, ‘I noticed that you did not
eat of the sadaqah I gave. This however is
a gift for you.’ Of this gift of dates, both he
and his companions ate.
The strict honesty of the Prophet was one
of the characteristics that led Salman to believe
in him and accept Islam. Salman was
released from slavery by the Prophet , who
paid his Jewish master a stipulated price,
and who himself planted an agreed number
of date palms to secure Salman’s manumission.
After accepting Islam, Salman
would say when asked whose son he was,
‘I am Salman, the son of Islam from the
children of Adam.’
Salman’s role in islam
Salman was to play an important role in
the struggles of the growing Muslim State.
At the battle of Khandaq, he proved to be
an innovator in military strategy. It was he
who suggested digging a ditch or khandaq
around Madinah to keep the Quraysh
army at bay. When Abu Sufyan, the leader
of the Makkans, saw the ditch, he said,
‘This stratagem has not been employed by
the Arabs before.’ Salman participated in
all of the other campaigns of the Prophet
thereafter. He was also with Saad in the
conquest of Iraq. After the grand victory,
the Caliph Umar chose him because of his
knowledge of the terrain, to select the land
upon which Kufa was to be built.
Salman became known as ‘Salman the
Good’. Salman was a scholar who lived a
rough and ascetic life. He had one cloak,
which he wore and slept on. He would not
seek the shelter of a roof but stayed under
a tree or against a wall. A man once said
to him: ‘Shall I not build you a house in
which you may live?’ ‘I have no need of a
house,’ he replied. The man persisted and
said; ‘I know the type of house that would
suit you.’ ‘Describe it to me,’ said Salman. ‘I
shall build you a house which if you stood
up in, the roof would hurt your head and
if you were to stretch your legs, the wall
would hurt them.’
Later, as a governor of Al-Madain
(Ctesiphon) near Baghdad, Salman received
a stipend of five thousand dhirhams.
This he would distribute as sadaqah.
He lived from the work of his own hands.
When some people came to Madina and
saw him working the palm groves, they
said, ‘You are the leader here and your sustenance
is guaranteed and yet you do this
work?’
‘I like to eat from the work of my own
hands,’ he replied. Salman however was
not extreme in his ascetism.
It is related that he visited Abu Dardaa with
which the Prophet (pbuh) had joined him
in brotherhood. He found Abu Dardaa’s
wife in a miserable state and he asked,
‘What is the matter with you.’‘Your brother
has no need of anything in this world,’ she
replied.
When Abu Dardaa came, he welcomed
Salman and gave him food. Salman told
him to eat but Abu Dardaa said, ‘I am
fasting.’‘I swear to you that I shall not eat
until you eat also.’
Salman spent the night there as well.
During the night, Abu ad-Dardaa got up
but Salman got hold of him and said, ‘O
Abu ad-Dardaa, your Lord has a right over
you. Your family has a right over you and
your body has a right over you. Give to
each there due.’
Then in the morning, they prayed together
and then went out to meet the Prophet
(pbuh). The Prophet (pbuh) supported
Salman in what he had said. (Bukhari)
Salman as a scholar
As a scholar, Salman was noted for his vast
knowledge and wisdom. Ali (RA) said of
him that he was like Luqman the Wise.
And Kab al-Ahbar said: ‘Salman is bursting
with knowledge and wisdom. He is an
ocean that does not dry up.’ Salman had
knowledge of both the Christian scripture
and the Quraan in addition to his
earlier knowledge of the Zoroastrian religion.
Salman in fact translated parts of the
Quraan into Persian during the lifetime of
the Prophet (pbuh). He was thus the first
person to translate the Quraan into a foreign
language.
Death
According to the most reliable account, he
died in either 31 or 34 A.H, at the age of
250 years, during the caliphate of Uthman,
at Ctesiphon.
Abu Hurraira (RA) narrates, that the
Prophet (pbuh) prayed the following verse:
‘If ye turn back, He will substitute in your
stead another people, then they would
not be like you.’ (Q47:38) The Sahabah
asked the Prophet (pbuh), ‘O Prophet
(pbuh), who are these people that Allah
has mentioned, that he would chose them
instead of us? That they will not do as we
did?’ The Prophet (pbuh) placed his hand
on Salman’s thigh and said, ‘It will be his
people. And even if faith is near the Surya
(the Pleiads), someone from the Persians
would attain it.’
Who were the people of Kufa and Iraq?
Who was Imaam Abu Hanifah? They were
all Persians. The divinely chosen denizens
of Kufa were Persians. Their spiritual
teachers were Persians and so were the
three about whom the Prophet (pbuh)
said, ‘Paradise longs for three people. Ali,
Amar and Salman.’ (Tirmidhi)
Abu Hurraira (RA) narrates in another
Hadith, that the Prophet (pbuh) once
prayed the following verse: ‘As well as others
of them, who have not already joined
them.’ (Q62:3) The Sahabah asked, ‘O
Prophet of Allah (pbuh) , who are these
people,’ The Prophet (pbuh) placed his
hand on Salman (pbuh) and said, ‘If
faith was near the Pleiads, then someone
from them would attain it.’ (Bukhari and
Muslim)
Time bore witness to the realisation of the
Prophet (pbuh) words. The progeny of the
Persians spread their knowledge and populated
the world.
Conclusion
Once Abu Sufyan came to Madinah and
passed by Salman (RaziAllah Anhu), Bilal
(RA) and Sohayb (RA). The three companions
said, ‘Have not the swords of Allah beheaded
this accursed man yet?’ Abu Bakr
(RA) upon hearing this said, ‘Do not say
such things of the leader of Quraish.’ After
that, Abu Bakr (RA) went to the Prophet
(pbuh) and told him of this conversation.
The Prophet (pbuh) said, ‘Have you annoyed
these three? If you have, then you
have annoyed Allah.’ Abu Bakr (RA) made
haste to the three companions and asked
them whether they took offence on his
words. They told him that they had not and
further said, ‘O brother, may Allah forgive
you.’ The annoyance of Salman (pbuh) is
the annoyance of Allah. Even the likes of
Abu Bakr (RA) fear to offend him.
It has come in another Hadith that the
Prophet (pbuh) said, ‘Allah has commanded
me to love four men, for He too loves
them. They are Ali, Abu Dhar, Miqdad
and Salman.’It has also come in a Hadith
that, ‘Each Prophet had seven helpers
and protectors, I was given fourteen. Ali,
Hasan and Hussain, Hamzah, Abu Bakr,
Umar, Masaab Ibn Ameer, Bilal, Salman,
Amar, Abdullah Ibn Masood, Abu Dhar
and Miqdad.’
This was Salman Farsi Salman (RaziAllah
Anhu), the Persian who’s quest for the true
faith lasted almost all of his 250 years of
life. As Muslims and as students, it should
be our point of aspiration to achieve at
least some of the dedication of Salman
Farsi (RaziAllah Anhu), to faith and the
gaining of knowledge.
Hadith (for All) Sheikh Ali Suleiman Canton Masjid Mondays & Fridays, after Fajr
Sheikh Ali Suleiman
Rajab cont’d from Pg. 2
for the accomplishments of our
ancestors, their commemoration
should not be restricted to a
particular day or night. Instead,
their accomplishments must be
remembered every day in the
practical life by observing their
teachings and following the great
examples they have set for us.
Keeping this principle in view,
the following points should be
remembered with regard to the
“Lailatul-mi’raj”:
(1) We cannot say with absolute
certainty in which night the
great event of mi’raj took place.
Although some traditions relate
this event to 27th night of the
month of Rajab, yet there are
other traditions that suggest
other dates. Al-Zurqani, the
famous biographer of the Holy
Prophet has referred to five
different views in this respect:
Rabi-ul-Awwal, Rabi-u-Thani,
Rajab, Ramadan and Shawwal.
Later, while discussing different
traditions, he has added a sixth
opinion, that the mi’raj took place
in the month of Zulhijjah.
Allama Abdulhaq Muhaddith
Dehlawi, the well-known scholar
of the Indian subcontinent, has
written a detailed book on the
merits of Islamic months. While
discussing the ‘Lailatul-mi’raj’
has mentioned that most of the
Canton Masjid Tuesdays, after Fajr
scholars are of the view that the
event of mi’raj took place in the
month of Ramadan or in Rabi-ulawwal.
(2) It is also not known in which
year the event of Mi’raj took
place. The books of history
suggest a wide range between the
fifth-year and the twelfth year
after the Holy Prophet was
entrusted with prophethood.
Now, if it is assumed that the
event of Mi’raj took place in the
fifth year of his prophethood, it
will mean that the Holy Prophet
remained in this world for
eighteen years after this event.
Even if it is presumed that the
mi’raj took place in the twelfth
year of his prophethood, his
remaining life-time after this
event would be eleven years.
Throughout this long period,
which may range between
eleven years and eighteen years,
the Holy Prophet never
celebrated the event of mi’raj, nor
did he give any instruction about
it. No one can prove that the
Holy Prophet ever performed
some specific modes of worship
in a night calling it the ‘Lailatulmi’raj’
or advised his followers
to commemorate the event in a
particular manner.
July, Jumada-II/Rajab, 14 7 Vol. 1 - No. 7
Prophet also, no one of his
companions is reported to celebrate
this night as a night of special
acts of worship. They were the
true devotees of the Holy Prophet
and had devoted their lives to
preserve every minute detail of the
sunnah of the Holy Prophet
and other Islamic teachings. Still,
they did not celebrate the event
of mi’raj in a particular night in a
particular way.
All these points go a long way to
prove that the celebration of the
27th night of Rajab, being the
lailatul-mi’raj has no basis in
the Sunnah of the Holy Prophet
or in the practice of his
noble companions. Had it been a
commendable practice to celebrate
this night, the exact date of this
event would have been preserved
accurately by the Ummah and the
Holy Prophet and his blessed
companions would have given
specific directions for it.
Therefore, it is not a Sunnah to
celebrate the Lailatul-mi’raj’. We
cannot declare any practice as a
sunnah unless it is established
through authentic sources that
the Holy Prophet or is noble
Companions have recognized it
as such, otherwise it may become
a bid’ah about which the Holy
Prophet has observed in the
following words: “Whoever invents
something in our religion which is
not a part of it, it is to be rejected.”
Being mindful of this serious
warning, we should appreciate
that the 27th night of the month
of Rajab is not like ‘Lailatul-qadr’
or ‘Lailatul-bara’ah’ for which
special merits have been mentioned
expressly either y the Holy Qur’an
or by the Holy Prophet .
However, all the recognized
modes of ‘ibadah (worship)
like Salat, recitation of the
Holy Qur’an, dhikr, etc. are
commendable any time,
especially in the late hours
of night, and obviously the
27th night of Rajab is not an
exception. Therefore, if someone
performs any recognized ‘ibadah
in this night from this point of
view nothing can stop him from
doing so, and he will be entitled
to the thawab (reward allocated
for that recognized ‘ibadah insha-
Allah.) But it is not permissible
to believe that performing ‘ibadah
in this night is more meritorious
or carries more thawab like
‘Lailatul-qadr’ or ‘Lailatulbara’ah’,
because this belief is not
based on any authentic verse or
on a sunnah of the Holy Prophet
. Similarly, it is not a correct
practice to celebrate this night
collectively and to invite people to
special ritual congregations.
(4) Some people suggest some
special modes of worship to be
performed in this night. Since
no special mode of worship is
prescribed by the Shari’ah in
this night, these suggestions
are devoid of any authority and
should not be acted upon.
It is believed by some that the
Muslims should keep fast on
27th of Rajab. Although there
are some traditions attributing
special merits to the fast of this
day yet the scholars of hadith
have held these traditions as
very weak and unauthentic
reports which cannot be sufficient
to establish a rule of Shari’ah.
On the contrary, there is an
authentic report that Sayyidna
‘Umar, Radi-Allahu anhu, used to
forbid people from fasting on this
day, rather to compel them to eat
if they had started fasting.
July, Jumada-II/Rajab, 14 7 Vol. 1 - No. 7
Rajab cont’d from Pg. 13
It should be borne
in mind here that a “nafl” fast can
be observed any day (except the
six prohibited days of the year);
therefore, fasting on 27th of Rajab
is not prohibited in itself. What is
prohibited is the belief that fasting
on this day is more meritorious
than fasting in other normal days.
One should not fast in this day with
this belief. But if someone fasts
therein, believing it to be a normal
nafl fast, there is no bar against it.
Sacrifice (qurbani) in the
month of Rajab
In the days of ignorance
(jahiliyyah) the Arabs used to offer
the sacrifice of a goat in the month
of Rajab. This sacrifice used to be
called “Atirah’ or ‘Rajabiyyah’. This
sacrifice was offered in the name of
different so-called gods and their
icons. In the beginning of Islam,
this custom was retained, but the
Muslims modified it by offering
the sacrifice of ‘Atirah in the
name of Allah instead of the false
gods. But finally, this custom was
abandoned and the Holy Prophet
prohibited the offering of
‘Atirah. In a tradition of Sayyidna
Abu Hurairah, Radi-Allahu anhu,
reported by both al-Bukhari and
Muslim, the Holy Prophet has
said: “Fara’ is nothing and ‘Atirah
is nothing.”
Abu Hurairah, Radi-Allahu anhu,
has explained in the same tradition
that ‘Fara” was the first child of a
she-camel. Whenever a she-camel
delivered its first child, the Arabs
used to sacrifice it in the name
of their so-called gods, while the
‘Atirah’ was a goat used to be
sacrificed in the month of Rajab.
Since the Holy Prophet stopped
both these customs, ‘Atirah is no
longer a recognized practice.
‘Umrah in the month of Rajab
Ibn ‘Abidin, the well-known scholar
of the Islamic jurisprudence,
has mentioned that the people
of Makkah (in his days) used to
perform ‘umrah in the month of
Rajab. Perhaps they believed that
performing ‘umrah in this month
is more meritorious than in other
months. Then Ibn Abidin himself
has rejected the authenticity of
this practice, because no tradition
of the Holy Prophet is found
to this effect. Conversely Sayyidah
‘Aishah, Radi-Allahu anha, has
expressly negated the presumption
by saying that the Holy Prophet
never performed an ‘umrah in
the month of Rajab (Sahih Muslim
1:409)
However, Ibn ‘Aibidin has quoted
a narration that ‘Abdullah
ibn Zubair, Radi-Allahu anhu,
completed the renovation of Ka’bah
shortly before 27th of Rajab, and as
a sign of gratefulness he performed
‘umrah and slaughtered some
animals. But this report cannot
form the basis of a recognized
annual practice, firstly because
the report is not very authentic,
and secondly because it does not
mention that Abdullah ibn Zubair,
Radi-Allahu anhu, had adopted
it as a continuing practice. At
the most, he performed ‘umrah
once as a sign of gratefulness on
the completion of Ka’bah. It does
not mean that he performed it
as a characteristic of the month
of Rajab. Therefore, performing
‘Umrah in this month is like
performing it in any other month
and no special merit can be
attached to it merely because it has
been performed in the month of
Rajab.
The Salat of “Ragha’ib”
Another special mode of worship
attributed by some people to this
month is the Salat of Raghai’b.
According to the custom of such
people, this Salat is performed in the
night of first Friday of the month of
Eajab. The Salat of Raghaib is said
to consist of twelve rak’ats to be
performed in pairs with six salams,
and in each rak’at the surah alqadr
is recited three times followed
by the Surah-al-ikhlas. This type
of Salat is also not based on any
sound source of Shari’ah. Therefore,
almost all the jurists and scholars of
Shari’ah have held that the Salat of
Raghaib is a baseless practice and
it is not permissible to treat it as a
recognized practice of this month.
It is true that there is a tradition,
narrated by Razin, the author of
a book of hadith, which attributes
the origin of this practice to the
Holy Prophet but almost all the
scholars of the science of hadith have
held it to be absolutely unauthentic.
Therefore, no importance can be
attached to it.
Distribution of Breads:
Another baseless practice in the
month of Rajab is that the people
bake special types of breads and,
after reciting some verses and
prayers on them, distribute them
among their friends and neighbors.
This custom has two different
shapes.
1). In some communities, this custom
is celebrated on 17th of Rajab on
the assumption that Sayyidna
Ali, Radi-Allahu anhu, was born
on 11th of Rajab and the 17th of
Rajab is the day on which his ‘Aqiqa
(Shaving of his head) was performed.
In order to celebrate this happy
event, the breads of some special
type are prepared and after reciting
Surah Al-Mulk on them, they are
distributed among the relatives and
friends. These breads are generally
called “breads of Tabarak” because
Surah Al-Mulk is usually recited on
them.
