Welcome to The Music Hall “The crown jewel of Portsmouth’s cultural scene, staging concerts, plays, movies, and even book readings. This meticulously restored theater holds its own with the best venues in Boston, attracting some of the nation’s most interesting entertainers.” – Yankee Magazine “the beating cultural heart of New Hampshire’s seacoast” – Boston Globe That just about says it all doesn’t it? It’s so heartening to read the accolades that reflect everything that The Music Hall community is committed to – our shared goals of fully restoring and rehabilitating this performing arts center for the 21 st Century, expanding our high quality programming to include such signature series as the NT Live @ The Music Hall, serving our Community Partners (nonprofits who use the hall for their fundraisers), and offering educational programs at the same low rate as at the beginning (15 th Annual School Days Series). There’s no question about it - The Music Hall is the place to be. It’s the perfect gathering spot to meet new and old friends. And, coming to the Hall is greener and more economical than heading to Boston or New York. We’re now seen as one of the premier theaters on the New England seaboard – a “must” destination. And, we’ve received a particular award of recognition – the 2009 American Institute of Architects/New Hampshire Excellence in Architecture Design Award. A place to gather, to see artists at the top of their game, to educate our children about the importance of arts in their lives. It’s this important work that our members have committed to supporting. Our members are critical to us and to thank you, we’re expanding our membership benefits to include even more partnerships with local businesses which makes your Music Hall membership even more beneficial since you’ll be able to use your membership card for discounts at more local restaurants and merchants. Our vision is to be the Seacoast’s premier performing arts center fulfilling our role as the anchor cultural organization in our community and to emerge as an American Treasure through a combination of vibrant programming and a dynamic, respectful restoration that is historically valid while balancing contemporary needs. As a highly focused performing arts center we will enliven our community with a diverse array of performance genres and an outlook that is contemporary, inclusive and classic. We are invested in the health of our community through our commitment to outreach to the underserved and to educational opportunities for children and adults alike.
Dear Patrons, Welcome to The Music Hall There are so many ways to be involved with The Music Hall. Many are visible at this moment. You purchased a ticket to today’s performance and you may have reserved that ticket in advance and at a discount if you are a member. You may have also made an additional gift. You relaxed in our Founders Lobby prior to the show as you waited for your friends to join you. You’ve been ushered to your seat by one of our 300 volunteers. You’re sitting under the lovingly restored 1878 dome. You will shortly be hearing the curtain speech delivered by one of our volunteer board members or professional staff who will tell you about the corporate sponsors and members who are making today’s performance possible since ticket revenue only covers 60% of the show costs. You will no doubt be seeing additional friends here from the community – to catch up on the latest news. Prior to the show, a master class may have been held with today’s artist and young students from around the Seacoast. And, while those students were working with that artist, you may have been dining in one of Portsmouth’s great restaurants, thus doing your part to funnel $5.3 million into the local economy in show-related spending. And, now you’re going to see a terrific show that comes to our stage because our curators comb the world looking for the very best in entertainment. As you head out after tonight’s show, I hope you’ll ponder all that it takes to make this unique “Music Hall Experience” happen. How does it happen? It’s all because of this wonderful community that you and I are a part of. The Music Hall – and everyone who participates in the Hall - does a terrific job knitting that community together day in and day out. We gather people together for conversation, for entertainment, for education. We keep our focus on the children of our community. We offer great on and off stage programming for children and families. And we work to restore the Hall for our children and their children. Thank you for all you already do for our community.
