SpOrT MANiTOBA
On behalf of the Board of Directors and staff of Sport Manitoba, we are pleased to present our annual report and
audited financial statement for 2010/2011.
Sport Manitoba’s Annual Business Plan, the Manitoba Action Plan for Sport (MAPS) and the Canadian Sport Policy
provided the focus to drive our initiatives and achievements this past year.
This was our first full year operating out of the new Sport for Life Centre. We were very excited to see the opening of
the Sport Resource Centre and the Sport Medicine Centre. Our programs and services continue to grow and we are
extremely happy to provide more opportunities to our athletes, coaches, officials, and all those involved in amateur
sport in our province. As our Capital Campaign develops, we are getting closer to completing the second phase of
the Centre and progressing toward building the fieldhouse. We look forward to the future of the Centre and being
able to offer even more to the sport community.
This year also saw four of our Provincial Sport Organizations embark on a Long Term Athlete Development
implementation planning process, and we continued to work with our partners to embed the Canadian Sport for Life
principles. In our Coaching Unit, 20 Active Start workshops with Early Childhood Educators were facilitated across the
province – helping educators promote physical literacy in young children.
We are very proud of Manitoba’s athletes as they continue to shine in provincial, national, and international sport
competitions. Our 2011 Canada Winter Games team ended the year strong, capturing 25 medals in Halifax. Here at
home, it is with excitement that we prepare for the 2012 Power Smart Manitoba Summer Games to be held in Swan
Valley.
We appreciate the continued support from the Province of Manitoba, the Minister Responsible for Sport, Honourable
Eric Robinson and his colleagues in government. Our province’s corporate community also provides invaluable
financial support to both Sport Manitoba and all of our provincial and community level sport organizations.
Volunteers are the backbone of the amateur sport system and are the driving force behind the accomplishments
of Manitoba’s athletes. Sport Manitoba is extremely thankful for the dedication and enthusiasm that our volunteers
provide to our provincial sport community.
Together, with all of our partners, Sport Manitoba will continue to build communities through sport and enhance our
provincial delivery systems to provide sport and recreation opportunities to all Manitobans.
The 2010/2011 year has been an amazing time of change,
growth, and development for Sport Manitoba and our new
home for sport – the Sport for Life Centre.
Our new building at 145 Pacific Avenue in Winnipeg has
seen a 100 year-old, under-utilized heritage building
renovated and a neighbourhood revitalized. Walking into
the Sport for Life Centre has produced a “wow” effect for
every visitor. The impact of artifacts from the Manitoba
Sports Hall of Fame & Museum and displays extolling the
exploits of recent Olympic heroes such as Cindy Klassen,
Clara Hughes and Jennifer Botterill capture the eyes and
memories of every guest.
The Sport for Life Centre is home to over 70 Provincial
Sport Organizations, our new Sport Medicine Centre, the
Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame & Museum, Sport Resource
Centre, a Performance Testing Area, and a Conference
Centre. The Centre saw over 16,000 volunteers using the
new facility in its first year of operation.
With the opening of a new facility, came the development
of a new website. In February 2011, Sport Manitoba
launched a new site that now includes access to all
associated sites in one easy-to-use online location. The new
website is a current design that is user friendly and will
accommodate changes that take place as the Sport for Life
Centre progresses and offers more programs and services.
Although Phase 2 of the Centre is still in development, the
Sport for Life Centre is already conducting programming.
In the Performance Centre, a number of provincial team
programs have already started. The Centre also offers
activity classes, such as yoga and boot camp, for downtown
residents and workers.
The new Sport Medicine Centre in the Sport for Life Centre
has been busy with activity and excitement. The 5,226
square foot space outfitted with state of the art equipment
has been preparing to open its doors to the public. The
Sport Medicine Centre will support a wide spectrum of
patients from repetitive strain injuries, to the recreational
participant, to the high performance athlete. A multidisciplinary
approach for the management of any injury
including physical therapy, athletic therapy, massage
therapy, chiropractic care, and physicians will be available
to the community, the general public, and both amateur
and high performance athletes.
Phase 2 of the Sport for Life Centre is an $18 million project
which will add a 50,000 square foot field house, 200 metre
indoor track, strength and conditioning areas, and a
multipurpose activity space. When complete the Centre
will provide Manitobans with an innovative research and
training facility for amateur and elite athletes, coaches,
officials, and community leaders. Additionally, it will be a
catalyst for providing much needed sport, recreation, and
healthy living programs/services to an underserviced inner
city population.
The Sport for Life Centre can only be completed through
a successful Capital Campaign and partnerships with
the Provincial and Federal Governments. Our Capital
Campaign Committee has been struck, promotional plans
developed, and private donations and corporate support
are being realized. The Capital Campaign Committee has
strong community and corporate representation and is
together to coordinate activities and promote active living for all in
their communities through their development of shared annual plans.
New Alliances are expected to be formed this year in Dauphin, Flin
In 2010, the Winnipeg Community Sport Alliance and its
Sport Manitoba continues to work with Provincial Sport
four Provincial Sport Organizations have embarked on a Long
process and several others have expressed interest. Four sports
have been identified to align aspects of their Manitoba Games
Sport Manitoba is pleased to report that active Coaching Academies now exist in the Westman,
Parkland, and Eastman regions, with Interlake planning to start in the fall of 2011. The Norman
region is in the process of developing three academies in Flin Flon, The Pas, and Thompson.
With a mix of sport specific courses and generic topics, the Active Coaching Academies have
created opportunities for coaches throughout the province to gain access to tremendous
professional development opportunities.
Sport Manitoba, in partnership with our Provincial Sport Organizations, trained a total of 240
coaches in the Learn to Train workshop that was developed in 2009. This workshop focuses on
providing coaches with the tools to deliver age and skill level appropriate warm ups, speed
coaches were trained through the regional Coaching Academy program.
The Winnipeg Aboriginal Sport Achievement Centre (WASAC) is a success
story of this program. In 2010, WASAC’s successes include:
• Summer Kids’ camp targeting Aboriginal youth in over 50 schools across
Winnipeg – 1058 youth (589 girls) ages 7-12 participated
• Partnership with the Centre for Aboriginal Human Resource
