Taylors High School
– a passport to the best universities
All students under the age of 18 in Australia seeking to enter a university
at home or abroad must study at high school. The Australian high school
education system is widely acknowledged as the “Rolls Royce” of schoollevel
academic qualifications and its qualifications are a passport to the
best universities in Australia and overseas. Our students have gone on to
study at prestigious global universities including Cambridge in the United
Kingdom and Washington in the United States.
How does the system work?
Australia’s secondary education curriculum is admired for
the rigour of its academic content and formal examinations,
which are administered by each state. Thousands of students
apply to enrol in universities in Australia each year. For most
courses there are more applicants than government-funded
places, so applicants are ranked to allow universities to offer
undergraduate places to the best students.
The Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) is given
to students once they have completed their Year 12 state
examinations. The final results, which determine the
ranking, are made up of state exams and internal
assessments.
Teaching of Years 10, 11 and 12 at Taylors is adapted to
each state award as follows:
Melbourne: Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE)
Perth: West Australian Certificate of Education (WACE * )
Sydney: Higher School Certificate (HSC)
*Students at the Perth campus will complete Year 11 of WACE and then directly
transfer into The University of Western Australia Foundation Program.
taylorscollege.edu.au
How is your result calculated?
An ATAR ranges between 99.95 and zero, and reports your
rank position relative to all other students in their respective
states. For example, an ATAR of 75.00 indicates that you
have achieved as well as or better than 75% of the Year 12
school-leaver age population.
Moreover the ATAR allows the results of any student
applying for university admission interstate to be directly
compared with those in other states.
How do you apply to a university in Australia?
Local or permanent resident students can apply for a
government-funded place at university. You should apply
online to the central university application processing
authority in the state in which you are planning to study
your undergraduate degree.
If you are an international student, you may not compete
for government-funded places, so you should check the
ATAR cut-off score with the university admissions centre
in your state.
Your Tertiary Counsellor at the college will guide you
in making the right university choice, and assist you in
preparing your application.

“Taylors
provides
me with
a base to
“For me, Taylors is not just
a school but where I feel
I belong. The teachers are
all very experienced and
highly qualified. For me, the
single most significant factor
is their willingness and
enthusiasm to help. Thanks
wonderful outcomes.
I believe there is now
In May every year a compulsory camp/retreat for Year 10
offers students an opportunity to acquire leadership and
teamwork skills. An activities day is also arranged for
Year 10 each term.
Years 10, 11 and 12 take part in a Home Group Program
especially designed for people from overseas experiencing
high school in Australia for the first time. It aims to help
them adapt to their new environment and includes a
Careers Program that guides them through the university
application process.
Sports
All students as well as staff and recent graduates have
opportunities to play team and individual sports throughout
the school year. Participation is wholeheartedly encouraged,
though purely voluntary.
There are competitive leagues for major sports such as
indoor and outdoor soccer, basketball, badminton and table
tennis, in which players get a chance to represent Taylors
College in tournaments against other Melbourne schools.
Depending on demand, we also run classes in sports like
yoga, cycling, jogging, aerobics and indoor cricket.
We celebrate the sporting abilities and achievements of our
students in a variety of ways and hold a sports presentation
night at the end of the year.
Music
As well as offering music as a subject – students can elect
to have private music lessons. Piano, singing, drums, violin,
clarinet, guitar and jazz lessons are very popular with
specialist teachers. Practice rooms are available for music
Greetings
Australia’s best kept secret
The capital of Western Australia was recently declared
one of the world’s best cities in which to live * . This clean,
cosmopolitan centre is the sunniest of all Australia’s
capitals, and has the reputation of being the nation’s
friendliest.
Perth is small enough to be relaxed and friendly, yet big
enough to offer a broad variety of recreational activities.
It offers a huge variety of sporting and leisure options,
including swimming and surfing at Cottesloe Beach,
cycling along the Swan River, sailing and windsurfing off
the coast, hiking in the Darling Ranges or whale-watching.
International gateway to WA
As the global gateway to Western Australia, Perth is the
most easily accessible Australian capital from South East
Asia, Africa, the Middle East and Europe. It is in the same
time zone as most major cities in Asia.
With over 200 nationalities living here, Perth is well known
for its multiculturalism and diversity. Its people are
welcoming and eager to learn more about international
students and their cultures.
Taylors College Perth runs a strong program of self-help,
social, cultural and sporting activities in which everyone
is encouraged to take part.
Build your study skills
Skill building is integrated into academic studies in the
skills, which are taught and practised through live and
simulated experiences.
These include developing and using a study planner,
taking notes from lessons, lectures and video presentations,
delivering oral presentations, participating in excursions,
preparing for tests and examinations and useful stress
management and relaxation techniques.
The Student Council
Student Council members are elected at the beginning of
each year to discuss and plan social activities for the college
including the Taylors College ball, the Lunar New Year
The college organises excursions with practical exercises
to give students a deeper understanding of the subjects
they are studying and to allow them to gain a greater
appreciation of Australian culture. Excursions in the past
have included tours of Fremantle Prison, visits to museums,
trips to Caversham Wildlife Park or the Perth Zoo and visits
to help instil values like trust, effective communication,
teamwork and leadership. These can range from widening
Principal, Sydney
Greetings
Sydney is a wonderful destination for international
students. People from all over the world have made
Sydney their home so students from overseas are made
to feel most welcome. The college is located very near to
the city centre and major universities, including our partner
one, The University of Sydney, so students have every
opportunity to experience both university life and
Sydney’s many attractions.
A cosmopolitan icon of the world
The capital of New South Wales combines relaxed
Australian culture with big city life. Sydney is the oldest
settlement in Australia and the economic powerhouse
of the nation, with world-famous icons such as the Opera
House and Harbour Bridge set on a stunning natural
harbour. It is a great city in which to live and work, and
rightly famous for its beaches.
A city of spectacular beauty
Sydney has a selection of beautiful national parks, perfect
for riverside picnics, surfing, clifftop walks or cycling along
rainforest tracks. It is the perfect city in which to relax. Enjoy
the Manly or Bondi beach culture or view the city sights
from the sea by taking a ferry across the harbour. Take in a
world-class exhibition at The Australian Museum and Art
Gallery of New South Wales. Watch ballet or opera
performances at the famous Opera House. Discover the
beauty of the harbour-side Botanical Gardens. Walk across
the famous Harbour Bridge – or climb to the top.
At Botany Bay, where Europeans first set foot on Australia,
there’s plenty of bushland and coast to explore. You may
even see whales.
Eighty kilometres to the west the Blue Mountains are
excellent for bushwalking and cycling. If you like winter
sports, then Thredbo in the Snowy Mountains five hours
drive to the south is an ideal place to visit.
Anh Thu (Katie) Phan, from Vietnam
Year 12 January, Taylors College Melbourne
A day in the life
I chose to study High School at Taylors College because I believe the school will give
me the best education I need to prepare me for university. I have been at Taylors for
three years and the school has become my second family. I want to enter a Bachelor of
Medicine/Bachelor of Surgery at the University of Melbourne – a famous university with
a really high ENTER score. My teachers help me a lot in my studying. Thanks to them,
I am now confident that I have the ability to do it!
09:00am
A fresh start in the morning.
I usually grab a coffee with friends
before going to my favourite class,
Mathematical Methods. I always
enjoy doing maths!
10:00am
My next class is also maths,
but much more challenging and
fascinating, specialist maths. I love
the feeling of being able to solve
such difficult problems. And my
teacher has been helping me a lot
during tutorials and class time.
11:00am
My free time. I usually catch
up with friends, forming a Study
Group to do maths homework
together. Study groups are
extremely helpful!
12:00pm
The most interesting time of the
day, chemistry. We learn about
everything around us theoretically
and practically. I really like
biochemistry – how chemistry
explains phenomena in biology.
It’s all about us.
01:00pm
Student Representative
Committee meeting. Even though
we only meet once a week, we
discuss a lot of issues like charity
campaigns, multicultural festivals
and the formal! We have fun
working together as a group.
02:00pm
I often bring lunch from home and
eat in the school common room
with friends. During this time I also
sell chocolates and healthy snacks.
This is a charity campaign by the
SRC to help build a school in a
poor village of Vietnam.
03:00pm
Last class of the day is ESL –
English as Second Language.
It’s a great class in which we learn
several texts and use those in our
essay writing. I think I’m getting
better and better at producing an
excellent piece of writing, thanks
to the help of my lovely teacher.
04:00pm
I go to the University of Melbourne
to attend a lecture in the Mind,
Brain and Behaviour course of
first-year Psychology. This is an
extension program. It gives me the
opportunity to extend my study
and prepares me for university
before I get there!
of the host. Taylors College’s carefully selected homestay
hosts provide safety and security in a well-supervised
environment. Living with a homestay host can be an
invaluable part of an international student’s learning
experience in Australia, and enjoyable and rewarding
for both the student and the host family. All our homestay
hosts are experienced in looking after overseas students.
They have police clearance and their homes are inspected
before students are placed.
Accommodation for over 18s
The Taylors College Accommodation Officer can provide
assistance and advice about rental and other accommodation
options close to campus. Taylors College staff can assist
students with temporary accommodation if required.
UniLodge on A’Beckett is conveniently located close to Taylors
College, making trips to school a very short eight minutes walk.
Living at UniLodge also enabled me to forge lasting friendships
with many other students. The supervisors are friendly and helpful.
I feel safe at UniLodge because of the high level of security.
It is a wonderful place to be as an international student.
