The thirst for knowledge <strong>and</strong> the yearning to<br />

explore new frontiers have led mankind to embark<br />

upon journeys across the oceans,through<br />

the deserts, <strong>and</strong> even to the moon. These same desires<br />

have also compelled us to conduct empirical research<br />

into the world around us. Scientists invented<br />

the telescope <strong>and</strong> the microscope to see the vast <strong>and</strong><br />

the tiny more clearly.Theories were developed to explain<br />

the images obtained <strong>and</strong> predict phenomena<br />

as yet unseen. The picture of the world thus created<br />

has been undergoing refinement ever since.<br />

The 20th century has seen the development of<br />

three of the cornerstones of modern physics: quantum<br />

mechanics, relativity theory <strong>and</strong> the discovery<br />

of antimatter. Together they have helped us underst<strong>and</strong><br />

the nature of matter <strong>and</strong> are deservedly regarded<br />

as one of mankind’s greatest achievements.<br />

It was only through the development of increasingly<br />

powerful particle accelerators that it became<br />

possible to gain deep insight into the building blocks<br />

of matter. Currently our most precise “microscopes,”<br />

these accelerators allow us to probe into the secrets<br />

of the big bang.They are also sources of intense electromagnetic<br />

radiation, which are used to perform<br />

pioneering investigations in the fields of physics,<br />

chemistry,geology,biology <strong>and</strong> medicine.<br />

The <strong>TESLA</strong> project at DESY was established within<br />

the framework of an international collaboration to<br />

help us better underst<strong>and</strong> the universe <strong>and</strong> our immediate<br />

surroundings. This brochure provides an introduction<br />

to <strong>TESLA</strong>, which has been designed to explore<br />

previously uncharted territory—both as a<br />

particle accelerator <strong>and</strong> as an intense X-ray laser.<br />

In addition to arousing your curiosity,our brochure<br />

has been conceived to provide you with a better idea<br />

of what <strong>TESLA</strong> is all about <strong>and</strong> what it is capable of.<br />

We also hope it will answer some of your questions<br />

<strong>and</strong> encourage you to come to DESY for an up-close<br />

look at the cutting edge of scientific research.<br />
