JARC’s SpringElation Safari 2009 ‘Wildly’ Successful!!
The evening was sunny and the breezes
mild as JARC celebrated its 11th annual
SpringElation and 40th Anniversary at
the Detroit Zoo. With 1,600 guests of
all ages, the exclusive event raised over
$300,000 for the Merle and Shirley
Harris Children and Family Division.
Event co-chairs Ron Applebaum and
Jenny Kaplan, Lindsay and Ryan Dembs
and Stacey and Marc Wittenberg were
thrilled with the great turnout and the
enthusiasm of 65 solicitors who worked
so hard to secure sponsorships and
gifts. Stacey Wittenberg adds, "I was
really happy with SpringElation. Even in
these tough economic times, the event
was well-attended — sold out in fact.
And it was great to see so many families
enjoying a fun-filled evening at a great
venue all to help children with disabilities.
I was proud to be a part of it."
Volunteer Chair Barbara Jonas recruited
more than 118 volunteers to help the
event run smoothly. Extreme Teen Co-
Chairs Jacob Allen, Sara Aronovitz, Josh
Ketai and Hayley Sakwa enlisted the
additional help of 33 teen volunteers.
Highlights of the evening included a
musical welcome by the Berkley High
School Jazz Band, roaming animalcostumed
volunteers, a safari-themed
scavenger hunt with fun prizes, upbeat
music and dancing by StarTrax Event
Productions, face painting by Faces In The
Air, dinner by Matt Prentice's Milk and
Honey and docent-led tram tours.
A special SpringElation bonus gave
guests the opportunity to sing "Happy
40th Birthday" to JARC and blow out the
candles on a super-sized cake.
The festivities were beautifully captured
on film by Michael Jonas Photography,
volunteer photographer Ron Ostreicher
