Recognition Dinner Features Presidential History
and AAFP Foundation Celebration
President John F. Kennedy and First
Lady Jacqueline Kennedy entertained
with warmth, hospitality, and grace. So it
was fitting that the setting for the AAFP
Foundation Annual Recognition Dinner
was Boston’s John F. Kennedy Library
and Museum.
On October 15, attendees enjoyed a
private self-guided tour of the museum,
including a portrayal of the life,
leadership, and legacy of President
Kennedy, his enthusiasm for politics and
public service. The museum illustrated
the nature of the Presidential office and
featured some of Jackie’s great fashion.
After the museum tour, guests enjoyed
dinner overlooking the sea that JFK
loved and the city where he launched his
political career.
During the evening, several awards and
accolades were bestowed. A Special
Recognition Award was bestowed
posthumously on Dr. Dale B. Hylton of
Colorado in recognition of his planned
gift to the AAFP Foundation. As part of
the special award, Dr. Hylton’s memory
was honored with a National Conference
Supporting the Legacy of Family Medicine
Thank you! It is through your generous donations — and bequests of individuals
such as Dr. Dale Hylton — that the AAFP Foundation is able to continue to do good
work in the name of Family Medicine. Dr. Hylton was recognized posthumously at the
Foundation Annual Recognition Dinner in Boston for generous bequests he made in
his will for the AAFP Foundation and the Colorado AFP Foundation. Dr. Hylton was a
member of the AAFP Foundation Legacy League by notifying us of his planned gift.
There are a number of different types of planned
gifts that can be used at an individual’s discretion
to ensure that the important work of the AAFP
Foundation continues. For instance, your Foundation
has recently launched the Charitable Gift Annuity
Program for members age 55 and older. The benefits
of establishing a Charitable Gift Annuity are the
potential of a steady income for you while providing a
significant gift to the AAFP Foundation.
For more information about how you can become a member of the Legacy League,
contact Brenda Cherpitel, Director, Individual Development at bcherpitel@aafp.org
or (800) 274-2237 Ext. 4452. Visit www.aafpfoundation.org/plannedgiving for a
Letter from the President — Mark H. Belfer, DO, FAAFP
Dear Friends and Colleagues,
Happy holidays from your AAFP Foundation. As the season
approaches, I am thinking of all that we’ve accomplished this
past year from sending 125 residents and medical students
to National Conference to providing humanitarian relief to
establishing a Charitable Gift Annuity and more.
It has been my honor to serve as president during this dynamic
time for Family Medicine and the Foundation. Over the past
two years, we’ve created a new look for the Foundation,
written a new mission statement, re-launched the Foundation
website, developed a strategic plan, and funded many new and
deserving programs. That’s a lot of good work in a short time.
Of special note are the accolades we received from outside the
organization. When Charity Navigator, which evaluates the financial
health of more than 5,000 charities, awarded the Foundation three
New Resource in Family Medicine History Research
If you’re studying Family Medicine history, you have a valuable new resource in the
online Classics of Family Medicine at www.aafpfoundation.org/ClassicsinFM.
Launched earlier this summer by the Center for the History of Family Medicine
(CHFM), this unique resource features important articles, studies and reports on the
development and practice of Family Medicine throughout the history of the specialty.
These works have now been compiled into a single online bibliographic resource for
researchers. Wherever possible, online versions of the articles cited have also been
provided for free download.
CHFM Manager Don Ivey emphasized that the project is a work in progress. “This is an
ever-expanding and evolving project,” he said. To suggest other articles for inclusion in
the bibliography, contact the Center at chfm@aafp.org.
Your Foundation at Work
A Heart for Children
The 2009 Physicians With Heart (PWH) Airlift to the Republic of
Georgia was another great success. The Children’s Project was
able to bring relief to two schools and two orphanages, as well
as assist area internally displaced persons (IDPs).
Specifically, at the Saguramo Orphanage in Gori, the
Children’s Project was able to provide much needed quilts,
blankets, sheets, and mattresses to keep the children
warm throughout the bitterly cold winters, as well as sports
equipment and hygiene kits. The most significant assistance
that the Children’s Project provided was at the Tbilisi Child
Care Institute, where an entire block of sleeping rooms
and bathrooms for 20 children was repaired. There are
approximately 60 orphaned children that live at this facility.
The final two schools that received assistance from the
Children’s Project were in Gori; Gori Kindergarten and Gori
Sports School. The heating system at the Gori Sports School
was replaced, in addition to the bathrooms being repaired. The
Children’s Project also provided soccer balls and other sports
equipment, and hygiene kits. The Saguramo Orphanage, Gori
Sports School and Tbilisi Child Care Institute received hand-
FMPC Awards $117,000
for Chapter Programs
Your AAFP Foundation through the Family
Medicine Philanthropic Consortium
(FMPC) is awarding $117,000 in grants to
AAFP Constituent Chapters and Chapter
Foundations as it concludes its 2009 FMPC
Grant Awards cycle. Winners are being
notified this month. Each of the winning
Chapters submitted a grant application
which was reviewed by the FMPC Steering
Committee, a peer leadership group of
Chapter executives and family physicians. It
is through your support of the national Dues
Check-Off campaign that the FMPC and the
AAFP Foundation are able to provide grants
for chapter-level programs such as these
deserving recipients. If you would like to see
a complete list of the grant recipients, visit
www.aafpfoundation.org/fmpc.
Please join us in congratulating the
newly elected FMPC Steering Committee
members; Deborah Clements, MD, Kansas,
Tad Fisher, Florida, Kate Mahler, Ohio, and
made hats and mittens, along with enough multi-vitamins for
each child for one year.
New this year, children from local schools in Kansas sent
their greetings to the children in Georgia with personal letters,
drawings, and photos — connecting children half a world apart.
Each year, because of contributions like yours, the Children’s
Project has been able to touch the lives of countless children
in war-torn Georgia. Thank you! To see pictures and learn more
Residents and Students Learn About Family
Medicine Thanks to You
Your continued support of the AAFP Foundation National Conference Scholarship
initiative and the Annual Fund made it possible for 125 residents and medical students
to attend the 2009 AAFP National Conference for Family Medicine Residents and
Medical Students in Kansas City, Missouri earlier this summer. Seventy of the
scholarship recipients were first-time attendees. This is what the experience meant to
some grateful recipients:
“As a future family physician, attendance at this conference renewed my confidence
in the future of the specialty. And it was a great opportunity to meet other students
with similar
interests
and goals.”
“Talking and
meeting
directors and
residents was
so invaluable.”
“The
educational
programming
was truly
helpful.”
Better Heart Health Through
Improved Conversation
Every year cardiovascular disease causes more than 870,000
deaths in the United States. While great progress has been
made in the prevention and management of cardiovascular
disease, many patients fail to experience the full benefit from
their treatment plans for a variety of reasons.
One strategy known to work is targeted communication that
fosters an effective working partnership between patients and
health care professionals. Time to Talk CARDIO (Creating A Real
Dialogue In the Office) is a program designed to help generate
more productive conversations about heart health. This free,
communication skill-building tool for patients and health care
professionals features more than 550 videos that demonstrate
methods to help make the most of the limited time in a medical
visit. The program also features patient and health care
professional educational brochures. To learn more, download
free materials or order materials, visit the Time to Talk CARDIO
website at www.aafpfoundation.org/timetotalkcardio.com.
The program was developed in partnership with the
AAFP Foundation, Canyon Ranch Institute (CRI) and
RIASWorks. It is underwritten by Merck/Schering-Plough
Pharmaceuticals. Family Medicine residencies and practices
are piloting the program.
10th Annual Auction is Big Success
Combined with the Assembly Celebration for the first time, this
year’s Auction truly was bigger and better than ever.
While Dr. Mark Belfer and Dr. Lori
Heim helped the professional
auctioneer increase the bidding
wars for the live Auction items,
attendees had fun bidding on
trips, Wii systems, jewelry, fine art,
and sports memorabilia. This year
the kids enjoyed a pit featuring
items specifically for them and
prize wheels that made everyone
who played a winner. Nearly 400
items were up for bid, as well as
grab bags and t-shirts that were
for sale. The evening’s tally was
$70,000 in support of the AAFP
Foundation’s work. Thanks to all
who contributed to making this
event such a success.
