Mission Statement
Saint Thomas More Chapel & Center serves the Catholic community
at Yale University by:
• Creating a vibrant and welcoming community through worship and service
• Cultivating informed faith and spirituality
• Engaging in reflective discourse on faith and culture
• Advancing the Church’s mission of promoting social justice
• Participating in the global Church’s life and witness
From the Chaplain’s Desk
Dear Friends:
Standing on the dais next to President Levin last November during the final banquet of the
AYA Assembly and hearing the citation read as I received the Yale Medal was a moment I shall
long cherish. There was recognition of our beautiful Cesar Pelli-designed student center and
appreciation for the contribution that Catholic ministry makes on Yale’s campus. Fr. Riggs, our
founding Chaplain, would have been a worthy recipient of the Yale Medal; but, he died in 1943
before the Yale Medal tradition began in 1952. Much of what we do here is the fulfillment of
his original vision. We strive to fill big shoes, indeed!
Receiving any award certainly takes me out of my comfort zone. My spirituality draws heavily
from Luke 17:10 – When you have done all that you were commanded to do, say, ‘We are useless
servants. We have done no more than our duty.’ For what we do here is our duty: to foster the
development of a vibrant Catholic center at Yale. That is a living out of our mission. As
Mother Theresa once said, “God has not called us to be successful; God has called us to be
faithful.”
The joy of that AYA evening was only diminished by the absence of Tom Golden who had died
three weeks prior. He was scheduled to sit next to me at the dinner and I had wanted him to
be honored for his extraordinary involvement here. I miss his friendship and remain eternally
grateful for the powerful legacy he leaves behind. We strive every day to be worthy of it.
We never settle for ‘maintenance mode’ – just keep it all going – but instead we are constantly
focused on ‘mission mode’ – how can we continue to grow and do it at a level of excellence?
Expanding our ministry and avoiding complacency are high priorities here.
My thanks to our alumni and friends for taking seriously this task and for being partners
in doing what we are supposed to do! The involvement of each person contributes to the
difference we make in the lives of students on a daily basis.
Know that I am profoundly grateful to all who make such a difference here. You are
remembered in prayer with esteem and deep appreciation.
God bless you – and thank you for your continued involvement.
Not For Sale
Katie Byrnes, Assistant Chaplain
This past year, our community became a partner in the Not For Sale
program’s international anti-slavery efforts. As a new partner, we
joined NFS to focus on new ideas, diverse networks, and innovative
ventures that will result in a more immediate, effective, and
sustainable plan to tackle the root causes of human trafficking.
Not For Sale continues to coordinate across social sectors such
as local non-profit organizations, industry leaders in business
and governments to facilitate investments and incubate social
enterprises. By doing so, they create futures for communities that
are at risk for human trafficking. These sustainable solutions are
being executed successfully in specific regions, which can then be
replicated across the globe. By becoming a Not For Sale partner, we
are now an important part of the solution to help people whose
freedom has been stolen. As Catholics, we are committed to
ensuring freedom and
hope for those most
vulnerable around the
globe.
Latino Ministry at Yale
Fr. Eddie DeLeón, Assistant Chaplain
Human trafficking
is the second fastest
growing criminal
industry in our world
today, grossing an
estimated $32 billion
every year. The global
slave trade presently holds over
30 million people in bondage,
which is more than at any other
time in history. Men, women,
and children are bought and sold
like commodities and forced
to work in brothels, hotels,
restaurants, factories, fields,
and more. Traffickers prey on
vulnerable populations, from
refugees to slum dwellers, using
deceptive tales of rewarding
work to coerce victims. In most
Not For Sale concert at STM
cases, trafficking victims are
marginalized people who live
in poverty and lack opportunities. Not For Sale recognizes that
ending human trafficking requires not only educated and equipped
abolitionists but also resources to provide alternative economic
opportunities to people living in poverty.
This spring we screened The Dark Side of Chocolate exposing the
unfair conditions around the cocoa industry and hosted a discussion
about our responsibility as consumers to make better choices.
Attendees feasted on fairly traded chocolate as a sweet reward! We
encourage everyone to partner with Not for Sale. Learn more at www.
notforsalecampaign.org.
Latino liturgical celebrations are powerful ways to
experience the Divine in the very ordinariness of life.
Many liturgical celebrations can draw the community
into a deeper relationship with both God and each
other. Last December was one such experience. We, at
Saint Thomas More Chapel, celebrated the Feast of
Our Lady of Guadalupe. The presence of both graduate
and undergraduate students, accompanied by other
members of the Yale community, made it an incredible
experience. The 10 pm Mass began outside at the piazza
with a candlelight procession accompanied by the sweet Procession begins in the Golden Center piazza
melodious sounds of a mariachi band. The bilingual
Mass encouraged full and active participation of the
gathered assembly and was followed by a fiesta consisting of Mexican food, piñata
breaking and more mariachi music. There was laughter, joy and pride. However,
to end simply with the sharing of this celebration through an article would be a
mistake for this was a clarion call to all members of the community that within
our midst are over 500 Latino students on the Yale campus who need to be served.
With this event, working closely with La Casa Cultural and the Latino faculty,
STM will embark on new initiatives to provide creative outreach for our Latino
students! Hasta la proxima.
STM Young Alumni Group
Will Edwards '02, alumni trustee
One of Saint Thomas More Chapel’s great gifts is the warm sense of
community that it fosters, a connection that lasts long after students
graduate and go into the world. It was with this in mind that,
earlier this year, a group of STM alumni formed the Young Alumni
Group. The mission of the group is to maintain that vibrant sense of
community among alumni by connecting them to the chapel and its
programs, to serve as a network and resource for graduating seniors,
to engage the alumni community in social or service events, and to
promote ways for the group to support the continued success of the
chapel and center.
Young alumni at the Yale Club
HHS Mandate Dialogue
Christian Burset GRD'11, LAW'13
We are off to a strong
start. After just a few
months, the group has
nearly eighty members
around the country, and
we held an enjoyable
kick-off event at the
Yale Club of New York
City at the end of April
at which Fr. Bob spoke
and visited with a
group of about thirty
recent graduates. We
are in the process of
Bl. John Paul II once called Saint Thomas More a symbol of “the
inalienable dignity of the human conscience” and “[t]he defense of
the Church’s freedom from unwarranted interference by the State.” In
the spirit of our chapel’s patron, the Graduate Council and Catholic
Law Students’ Association cosponsored a panel discussion on one
of today’s most controversial questions of conscience: the Obama
Administration’s proposed mandate that all employers—including
many religious charities—insure the full spectrum of FDA-approved
contraceptives and sterilization procedures.
The mandate has drawn fire from a range of religious leaders and
institutions, including the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops and
Sr. Carol Keehan of the Catholic Health Association, who supported
the Administration’s health reform but attacked the mandate
as “unacceptable.” These critics argue that the mandate damages
religious liberty by forcing institutions to pay for treatments that
violate their beliefs.
Though the mandate has sparked controversy among many faiths,
our panel offered three distinctly Catholic perspectives on the issue.
Marc DeGirolami, an assistant professor at Saint John’s University
Law School, discussed the legal and constitutional implications of the
mandate. Matthew Boudway ’98, an associate editor at Commonweal
Yale alumni and friends reconnect in NYC
developing plans for further events and other outreach in the coming
year and we are excited to keep building momentum.
If you are a young alumnus/a and are interested in becoming part
of our group, please join us. We are always happy to welcome new
members and their ideas. Together, we can bring the wonderful
sense of community developed at STM beyond the Yale campus.
Contact: Jamie Cappetta, jamie.cappetta@yale.edu
Magazine, focused on the debate’s cultural and theological
dimensions. Finally, Ashley McGuire, editor-in-chief of the web
magazine Altcatholicah and a fellow at The Becket Fund for Religious
Liberty, offered her perspective as a frequent commentator on faith,
gender, and religious liberty. The session concluded with a spirited
question-and-answer session.
Because the discussion took place at the Yale Law School—part of
the Graduate Council’s ongoing effort to expand its outreach—it was
able to attract a number
of new faces as well
as STM regulars. The
event even raised our
profile beyond Yale,
Bulldog Days
David Suwondo '13
This past April, hundreds of newly-admitted future Yalies
descended on campus for Bulldog Days, the university’s threeday
program for students accepted to the Class of 2016. This
year, equipped with a giant Saint Thomas More Chapel poster
board and custom T-shirts proudly identifying ourselves as
Catholic, the members of the Undergraduate Council (UGC)
staffed a table at the university-wide Extracurricular Bazaar,
where we reached out to hundreds of Catholic pre-frosh and
handed out flyers filled with photos from the past year at STM
and highlights of Catholic life at Yale. That evening, the UGC
hosted a well-attended marshmallow dodgeball in the piazza and
later—amidst an impressive dessert buffet featuring a flowing
chocolate fountain—the new Yalies were warmly welcomed by
the UGC and the chaplains. Gathering in the courtyard and the
lecture hall, members of the incoming Class of 2016 listened to
short reflections given by the UGC co-chairs, watched a welcome
video prepared by the UGC, and accompanied us on tours of the
chapel and center. For me, seeing the awe and excitement on each
new face that day was an incredibly moving experience. It was
deeply gratifying and humbling to welcome the newest members
of our community to a place that has truly become home for me,
to see the expressions of wonder and amazement on each of their
faces as they walked through the doors of the Golden Center for
the first time, and to give them a taste (literally and figuratively)
of the vibrancy of Catholic life at Yale and the community that
sustains it here at STM. But what’s even more moving for me is
the knowledge that for many of these students, those doors will
soon become familiar ones, through which they will pass countless
Marshmallow dodgeball during Bulldog Days
David Suwondo '13
more times throughout their bright college years at Yale. They
will be the next lectors and Eucharistic Ministers; soup kitchen
volunteers and CCD teachers; Small Church Communities and
UGC members. Three years ago, when I first walked through
those now-familiar doors, I felt that same sense of awe and
amazement. Three years later, I still do.
The Church and
Occupy Wall Street:
What Are Christians to Think?
Craig A. Ford, Jr., m.a.r. '12
As 2011 came to a close, it seemed to many here on campus that the Occupy Wall
Street demonstration was only beginning to take shape. As lively conversation
ensued that doubtlessly reflected the varied political and economic perspectives of
the community at Saint Thomas More Chapel, the questions themselves seemed to
take on a particular urgency in New Haven as the Green became the demonstration
site of Occupy New Haven—what do these occupiers here want? Why should I care
about Occupy here? Who’s actually protesting here, and why are they doing so? The
Graduate Council decided to contribute to this conversation by hosting an event
that offered alternative ways to think about the Occupy movement that reflected
Christian concerns.
On January 15th, nearly fifty students accepted the Graduate Council’s invitation to
attend The Church and Occupy Wall Street: What are Christians to Think? The event
featured a panel of individuals representing different perspectives from which to
approach the Occupy movement: Professor Kathryn Tanner, Yale Divinity School,
who researches topics at the intersection of theology and economics; Rev. John
Gage, pastor of the United Church on the Green, whose community provided
access to restrooms and meeting space for Occupy New Haven; Jeremy Kessler,
a student at Yale Law School, whose work has provided a historical perspective
into the significance of the Occupy movement as a collective act of conscientious
objection; and Nathan Schneider who was among the first journalists to interview
occupiers at the Occupy Wall Street site.
Together these panelists provided students with the tools for engaging the issues
raised by Occupy Wall Street and for thinking more broadly about how to continue
Christ’s mission in our complicated world.
ESTEEM Capstone Conference 2012
"ESTEEM helped me see that the Church not only
welcomes my full participation but requires it. It
was a privilege to have this space to really discuss
the problems facing the Church, the promise of the
future, and how our own gifts can fit."
ESTEEM Year 2
Michelle Towster GRD'13
Engaging Students to Enliven the Ecclesial Mission,
or ESTEEM, is a program that educates and
empowers Catholic college and graduate students to
continue their involvement in the Church following
graduation through leadership in their local parishes
and dioceses. This past year, thirteen students met
biweekly to discuss topics including church history,
ecclesiology, governance, Catholic social teaching,
and our baptismal call as Catholics. We were blessed
with both inspiring mentors from the community
and wonderful guest speakers such as Professor
Janet Ruffing, Yale Divinity School and Professor
Paul Lakeland, the Chair of Catholic Studies at
Fairfield University. We also participated in a benefit
concert for Not for Sale, an organization on a mission
to abolish human trafficking and learned about this
modern-day problem and how we as Catholics are
called to act. Our year’s work culminated in the
ESTEEM Capstone Conference in April, where we
were able to meet with and learn from the other
ESTEEM groups from across the country including:
Ohio State; Michigan State; UCLA; Sacred Heart
University; Stanford; California State East Bay; and
Purdue. It was at this event, discussing the themes
that had shaped our year, that the members of our
group realized how much we had learned and grown
as Catholics and leaders.
"I enjoyed my ESTEEM experience tremendously. It
was great to be able to sit down with a student
and discuss such a wide range of non-academic
subjects. I already knew my mentee, but it was
fun to really talk about issues that affect us in
life. Even though our official ESTEEM time has
concluded, I know we will continue to meet and
then be in touch over the years."
A Legacy of Generosity
Joseph J. Vale '63
Excerpts from remarks made by Joseph J. Vale '63 on December 4th,
2011, celebrating the renovation of the chapel at which a plaque was
unveiled honoring his parents.
Good Morning,
When Father Beloin asked me if I would like to say a few words
today, because I am a lifelong, die-hard baseball fan, my first
thought was of Yogi Berra, the great All-Star and Hall of Fame
catcher for the New York Yankees many years ago. Near the end
of his distinguished career, the Yankees held a special day in his
honor at Yankee Stadium. After the gifts were conferred and
the speeches given, Yogi stepped to the microphone to express
his gratitude, and
began by saying,
in his inimitable
way, “I would like to
thank everyone who
helped make this day
necessary.”
First but not least,
as Yogi might say, I
thank my parents,
who really did make
10:00 am Mass presentation of the gifts
this presentation
necessary. Judge
Jerome Vale and Jean G. Vale lived lives which spanned nearly all
of the twentieth century.
I hope that their lives will provide you with guidance, confidence
and inspiration, as they did for me. First, their faith in God was
unwavering. In the 1930s, my father was one of the laymen who
helped an enterprising pastor transform a fledgling New York
parish that had begun in a storefront, not unlike those down
the street on Broadway, into a large church with a school and a
thriving community program.
My parents were remarkable, too, for their discipline,
determination, sacrifice and perseverance during difficult, lean
times in the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s. During the Great Depression,
my father went to law school at night, while holding a day job.
Throughout their
entire lives, they were
extremely dedicated to
family. They were also
intent upon fostering a
home environment for
their only child – even
going into debt to
finance my education
at private school and
Yale.
Bishop Christie Macaluso, D.D., Auxiliary Bishop
of Hartford
To them I owe my life and
everything I have become.
Rev. James Healy was my
pastor here at Saint Thomas
More Chapel during my
undergraduate years. He
taught me what it really
meant to be a Catholic. He
taught me that this recently
renovated structure is really
not the Church. It is only
the church building. We –
you and I – are the Church.
Saint Thomas More Chapel Plaque
Next is Troy Murray, my classmate. Had he never mentioned
to me the great changes happening here, my interest would
never have been piqued, nor would I ever have become an active
supporter of this community. Troy’s actions demonstrate how
important it is for Saint Thomas More Chapel to connect more
closely with Yale’s Catholic alumni, so that they will make an
increased contribution to this community over time.
Then, there is Tom Golden. His life points out the importance of
“giving back” – that is, wisely reinvesting God’s assets (of which
we are only temporary custodians, never true owners) and doing
so for the betterment of mankind.
And, of course, Father Robert Beloin. He is transforming Saint
Thomas More Chapel into the preeminent Catholic university
community in this country. In this regard, I believe Saint
Thomas More Chapel’s future role in the Catholic Church is
to produce the lay leaders who will be needed to help manage
parishes and charitable activities as the Church faces a desperate,
growing shortage of priests and resources in the United States in
the years ahead.
In a broader historical context, I foresee his work as providing
our nation with leaders in the Church in the same way that Yale
has traditionally supplied America with leaders in government,
business, the professions and academia. And, by the way, you and
your successors here will be those leaders, so begin to prepare for
your roles while you are still here at Yale. How?
I was once told a story about St. Francis of Assisi. One day
Francis asked a young friar to accompany him as he went into
Assisi to preach about what it meant to be a Christian. Assisi was
quite small at that time, and Francis started at one end of the
town’s central street and proceeded to greet some townspeople,
bless others, dispense alms, solve problems and console or inspire
as situations warranted. When the two men reached the far
end of the street on the outskirts of town, the young friar said
to Francis, “But Francis, when are you going to preach?” And
Francis responded, “We just did.” It is because of Fr. Beloin that
I, like Tom Golden and so many others, have invested in Saint
Thomas More Chapel’s activities.
Fr. Eddie DeLeón, Joe Vale '63, Bishop Christie Macaluso, and Fr. Bob Beloin after Mass
And so the lessons are: faith in God, in country and in the future; discipline,
determination, sacrifice and perseverance; dedication to family; putting faith
into practice; giving back; and contributing to society.
In closing, let me say this:
I remember being in this chapel as an undergraduate, and staring at these
exotic chandeliers, wondering what life after Yale would hold in store for me.
I wished that alumni would come back to provide me with some insight or
advice.
I know that many of you are facing uncertain futures right now, especially as
the tectonic plates of business, finance, politics and society are shifting. But
I can assure you that – despite what “experts” and media pundits might lead
you to believe – nothing you have experienced in your lifetime compares
in magnitude or difficulty with the wars, economic depression or sacrifices
which my parents faced during their lifetime.
Moreover, you stand better prepared at your age than they were. So take
comfort, and be inspired by their lives. As the gospels tell us, “fight the good
fight,” “run the race.” And, as Pope John Paul II once told us – and as my
parents firmly believed throughout their lifetimes – “don’t be afraid, don’t be
afraid.”
Thank you.
Class Reunion Credit Agreement Discontinued
With the close of the capital campaign, class reunion
credit is no longer extended by the Yale Development
Office for gifts to our Building Fund. We remain
grateful to President Levin and the Development
Office for this extraordinary support.
Beautiful naming opportunities remain for designated
spaces in the chapel and center. Programmatic
endowments for various aspects of our ministry are
available and can establish your legacy at Yale. For
Letter from Edward J. Smith '70
The completion of the campaign for the Golden
Center puts Saint Thomas More Chapel in a
wonderful period in the evolution of Catholic
ministry at Yale. As an undergraduate in the
1960s, I found a supportive Catholic ministry led
by Fr. Russell, but I did not feel a strong sense of
community. When my son, Ted, arrived at Yale
in 1996, he found support, programs and a sense
of community. The development and success of
the Golden Center have expanded the resources
and programs available to the Yale Catholic
community. Since I became a trustee in 2010, I
have been excited to see the vibrancy, growth and
commitment of the entire STM community to the
expansion of our mission.
I was honored and humbled to be elected Treasurer
and Finance Committee Chair last year. This is an
exciting and challenging time as we wrap up the
capital campaign and develop plans for receiving
and investing the testamentary gift from Tom
Golden’s estate. The Board of Trustees will be
embarking on a strategic planning process to refine
and expand our strategy over the next five years to
insure the continued success and growth of STM
in its service to the Yale Community in New Haven
and to the communities where our students and
alumni live and work.
We are grateful for your prayers and financial
support and welcome the continuation of that
support as we grow our mission of Catholic service.
Sincerely yours,
Edward J. Smith '70
Treasurer
Thomas E. Golden, Jr. (7/8/1929 – 10/29/2011) - Rest in peace.
