Petersburg area transit system

coming to the city of Hopewell

Submitted By: Herbert Bragg, Director,

Intergovernmental & Public Affairs

The City of Hopewell and the City of Petersburg Area Transit

System have formed a partnership in order to provide public

transportation services to the City. A tentative schedule (subject to

change) will commence the first week of September 2011. The current

approved route consists of 29 stops throughout the City. The

route will begin at Food Lion on Oaklawn.

This service is made possible through the Tri-Cities Area 2010

Transit Development Plan under the Crater Planning District Commission.

Funding was approved in October of 2010 in the amount

of $500.000. It is anticipated to provide services to the City of

Hopewell for approximately three years. The primary purpose of

the plan is to create a route that services as many destinations in the

City as possible and ultimately lead to connections for transfers in

the service areas.

The Blandford/Hopewell/Fort Lee bus will be available at the

transfer station adjacent to Food Lion. Fares will be $1 per trip.

Senior citizens and disabled pay only 50 cents. Transfers from one

route to another cost 10 cents. In the last six years alone, public

transportation use has risen 22%-faster than vehicle miles traveled

on our roadways and airplane passenger miles logged over the

same period. Communities across the country are expanding public

transportation systems and constructing new ones, especially in

light of high gasoline prices.

There are many benefits for individuals and families utilizing

public transportation. For example, it improves mobility, reduces

road congestion, reduces travel time, connects and extends transportation

networks, enhance economic opportunity, and expand

the labor pool, job accessibility and reliability to include a greater

return on investment. Please find attached a tentative bus schedule

and valuable tips for using mass transit.

For additional information, please contact Herbert Bragg, Director,

Intergovernmental & Public Affairs, City of Hopewell at

(804) 541-2270 or Marvin Rollins, Petersburg Area Transit, Operations

Manager at (804) 733-2413/2450.

Would your organization/club/individual

like to adopt one of our parks?

Appomattox River Woman’s Club in Hopewell recently adopted Riverside

Harbor Park and they will be setting up various workdays at the site and will help

with things like trimming, planting, mulching, raking of leaves, and much more.

Work days are set at a time convenient to the organization and usually run from

April until November. By adopting a park this helps us dress up our parks to make

them more enjoyable for our community. We will place a sign with the name of the

organization/club/individual. If a big work day is planned we will provide one of our

park crew to be on site as well.

We are looking to more organizations/clubs/individuals to adopt a park as we

work towards all park sites to be a part of the program. If you are interested, please

call Steve Howard, our Maintenance Specialist at 804-541-2353 or email him at

showard@hopewellva.gov.
