Searching for connected

SLS-500 PLCs

The SLS-500-Configurator has an integrated

automatic search function for connected PLCs. For

this the SLS-500-Configurator scans all available free

ports from COM1 to COM8 for a connected SLS-500-

PLC.

The following baud rates are used:

� 115200 Baud, 8, No Parity, 1 Stop bit

� 57600 Baud, 8, No Parity, 1 Stop bit

� 38400 Baud, 8, No Parity, 1 Stop bit

� 19200 Baud, 8, No Parity, 1 Stop bit

� 9600 Baud, 8, No Parity, 1 Stop bit

� 4800 Baud, 8, No Parity, 1 Stop bit

� 2400 Baud, 8, No Parity, 1 Stop bit

� 1200 Baud, 8, No Parity, 1 Stop bit

If no PLC is found, a failure message will occur and

the process has to be repeated.

Otherwise SLS-500-Configurator saves the detected

configuration!

If a program is loaded from SLS-500-Configurator to

the Controller and if the baud rate on the Controller

changes, SLS-500-Configurator will put out a failure

message the next time the download is started:

The function of SLS-500-Configurator is to adapt the

changed adjustments to the Controller and to

download the program without errors.

baud rate configuration. It is a fixed component of the

system and contains the so-called System Variables.

baud rate.

The name can not be chosen individually since it is

fixed in the system analogue memory. If a false name

or baud rate is chosen the port can not be initialised.

The baud rate configuration should only be carried out

on the initialisation page, but it is not absolute

necessary.

The desired value of the baud rate will be registered

in the analogue constant. The system variable loads

the value of the analogue constant. Consequently the

system variable is initialised.

If a non acceptable value is registered – all values

except 9600, 19200 and 38400 – the system variable

will not be initialised and keeps the last saved value.

Cycle time control

of SLS-500 PLCs

The system software of SLS-500 PLCs executes

programs cyclically. The program cycle splits up in two

parts. The SYSTEM-part and the SLS-500-

Configurator-Program-part. Both parts can be

monitored by their execution time. For this purpose

there are the variables SYS_CYCLEMAX and

SYS_SYSMAX. You can also determine the current

runtime of both parts simultaneously in the software.

SYS_CYCLETIME and SYS_SYSTIME are used as

variables.

Cycle time control

The digital inputs of all modules as well as the digital

outputs, the digital analogue inputs and analogue

outputs will be updated during the SYSTEM-part.

Afterwards corresponding timer and counter will be

processed and safety checks will be carried out etc.

The execution of SLS-500-Configurator program is

determined to completely process the saved SLS-

500-Configurator program. The In/Outputs are taken

from the process image. The process image is an

internal image within the SLS-500-PLCs, which will be

The two variables SYS_CYCLEMAX and

SYS_SYSMAX determine the maximum values. If

maximum values are exceeded, the PLC will give out

ERROR and will switch off all extensions (extension

modules). In this way the maximum cycle time of the

PLC can be limited.

Main Controller

The MemoryCard for a SLS-500 Main Controller can

be used for 3 different things: The MemoryCard

allows the transport of programs from one main

controller to another. More over the MemoryCard

enables the upgrading of the program of a main

controller and third the MemoryCard can save

remanent data.

Allocation of memory space on

MemoryCard

The MemoryCard has a capacity of 64 kB. 32 kB are

acquired for SLS-500-Configurator programs.

16 kB are used to save remanent analog values (that

makes a capacity of 4096 analog values) and 16 kB

are used to save texts of SLS-500-Configurator (that

makes 512 remanent text values).

Installation of the MemoryCard in

SLS-500 Main Controller

The MemoryCard first has to be put into the provided

card holder. Then it has to be inserted into the

Controller as shown in the figure. If the MemoryCard

has no contact the reading operation will give out a

ZERO-value. If the MemoryCard is inserted correctly,

everything will work similar to the description.

Copying programs

Having loaded a correct SLS-500-Configurator

program to the MemoryCard, you can start the known

PLC-manager with „Start->Dialog“. You will have the

following options with the PLC-manager: First you can

copy the current loaded SLS-500-Configurator

program from the Main Controller to the MemoryCard

by clicking the button „CC->MC“. You can also

remove the MemoryCard from the Controller and

insert it into another Controller, which will load the

program automatically as soon as it gets voltage.

Updating programs

2nd occasion: Insert a MemoryCard with a program

into the controller and click the button MC->CC. The

MemoryCard-program will be loaded automatically in

the main controller. Now you could take out the

MemoryCard, because the program is saved to the

controller.

Important: The program can only be copied once.

That means that by clicking the button „CC->MC“, the

program is available on the MemoryCard. If you press

the button „MC->CC“ again, the function will also be

executed just once, so that the program is copied just

once.

The main modules SLS-500-R 24V and SLS-500-S

24V use the last digital inputs (Di5-Di8) to receive the

track of the incremental encoder. Therefore you can

only wire max. 2 incremental encoders with a SLS-

500-R 24V and/or SLS-500-S 24V.

An incremental encoder delivers values on 2 lines,

called track A and track B. The speed at which

impulses are sent by the incremental encoder are

called „line“.

Tech Note: Internal Supply Voltage Control

Internal +24V control for SLS-500 Main-

Controllers

All modules have an internal voltage control, to

guarantee that the extension modules and the main

controller are switched off correctly in the case of a

voltage drop.

The internal power fail-logic monitors the 24-V-voltage

permanently. If the voltage drops below a certain

threshold, the internal CPU program will be informed

and the communication with the extension modules

and the running SLS-500-Configurator program will

be stopped. After that the control will continue to

monitor whether the voltage stays below this crucial

threshold. If this is the case, no SLS-500-Configurator

program will be executed. If the voltage returns to a

normal level, a pause of 2 seconds will be made. After

this break the SLS-500 module and the SLS-500-

Configurator program will be reactivated and all

extension modules will be restarted.

Because of the internal voltage control of the SLS-500

PLCs it is guaranteed that the connected extension

module and the bus-system do only work if the supply

voltage is correct. If there is a short-term voltage drop

in an application, the main controller will shutdown the

running program and will restart it if the voltage

returns to a normal level.

This provides a secure operation of the modules, also

with large spread facilities.


Tech Note: Excel linking to SLS-500 PLCs

SIVIEWServer

For all SLS-500 Main Controllers and all SLS-500-Configurator versions

The SIVIEWServer is the link between SLS-500 and

Excel-database. It can pre-process data of up to 16

PLCs for one database.

For every PC-connected PLC you can configure a

own symbol table, as well as name, interface and

baud rate. These configurations will be saved to a file

(for example HIQUEL-SLS-500.ssc).

Configuration of the symbol table

The symbol table is a file created by the Compiler (for

example RESI.sym). This file has to be opened with

the text editor in order to make changes. This file is

necessary to allocate the names to the right Index.

The file will be saved to the directory ..\local

settings\Temp of the user. The name and the index of

every memory will be displayed during the simulation

of the program.


Tech Note: Real-time clock with SLS-500-Configurator

Real-time clock with SLS-500-

Configurator

SLS-500-Controller provide the functions of a RTC

(Real-time clock). This real-time clock will keep

running even in the case of complete voltage

breakdown. The backup-batteries will supply the RTC

for approximately 100 days after voltage breakdown.

SLS-500-Configurator enables the user to read out

the RTC and provides the update to the current date

by using the PC.

Requirements

For all SLS-500 Main Controllers and all SLS-500-Configurator versions

The SLS-500-Controller must be connected to the PC

correctly. After that start the DIALOG from „Start“ and

„Dialog“. The connection to the module will be set up.

Read-out the time

If the connection is set up click the button „Get actual

PLC time“. SLS-500-Configurator will display the

current values of the RTC.

The displayed values can of course differ from the

PC-time.

Set time to PC-time

SLS-500-Configurator is also able to set the RTC to

the current PC-time.

Set the time by clicking „Set Clock to PC time“. The

current time of the PLC will be loaded to the PLC.

Set time in a running program

SLS-500-Configurator can also change the time with

a program running on a controller.

The text variable which contains the valid date/time

value has the following format:

„WD TT.MM.JJ HH:MM:SS“

TU 14.07.03 15:30:00 CLOCK

This constant has to be connected with a system textmemory

which has to be set to „CLOCK“.

Consequently the internal real-time clock will be set to

the value of the text-constant or text-variable.

IMPORTANT: The integrated real-time clock runs in

24h mode from 00 to 23 o‘clock!

Requirements

HIQUEL-TERM4 Terminal, a Interface-cable Term4-

SLS connection cable and a SLS-500 Main Controller

(group C or D).

Setup mode

Assure that your HIQUEL-TERM4 is connected with

the SLS-500 Main Controller and that the voltage

supply is working, but TERM4 must be switched off .

Now press the three marked arrow keys

simultaneously. Keep them pressed and switch on the

terminal. The setup menu will be displayed after

approximately 5 seconds.

Now you are in setup mode of the HIQUEL-TERM4

Contrast

The lowest value is 0, the highest is 100. Modify the

contrast with keys left/right.

Bus number

If you want to connect more than one terminal to the

BUS during Protected Mode of the terminal, you can

set unique bus numbers from 0 to 255 for the

individual terminals.

Important: Set the bus number to 0.

Baud rate

The different communication types and speeds can

be set. The following adjustment must be made:

19200 8N1.

Communication mode

Controls the different protocols of TERM4.

Adjustment: Choose PROTECTED.

Controller can send data to various periphery.

The voltage supply of a periphery can run over the

voltage supply of the SLS-500 Main Controller up to

500mA.

Use the configuration of the software program to

switch-over from HIQUEL-BUS to the free

programmable RS232. A additional configuration tool

(SLS-500-SIO-CAT5) is required to adjust the

parameters of the serial interface.
